For all those out there who are feeling a bit intro and retrospective, I'm curious. You're walking down the street, watching tv or surfing the internet. You stumble across info or something about blank, and suddenly, your hit with this notion that you're getting old. By that, I mean you're hit with the notion of how much time has passed between when your first saw that or experienced it and when you're reminded of it again.

For me, oddly enough, it's cartoons. I'm an animation fan, and I love Looney Tunes and all that, but I don't feel old when I'm watching Looney Tunes. Like I suppose I'm a third or fourth generation of fan, and over the holidays I watched some of them with my four or five year old cousin, so I felt like I was passing the torch.

But when I hear about a syndicated cartoon from the late 80's or early 90's coming to DVD, I'm suddenly hit with this sense of tangent time. Of the fact that fifteen or so years has passed between then and now and that I'm not longer the little boy who loved these shows as a kid. Mostly the Disney and Warner Bros shows, like DUCK TALES, TAIL SPIN, DARKWING DUCK, CHIP AND DALE RESCUE RANGERS, BONKERS, GOOF TROOP, the various spin offs of the early 90's Disney movies, ANIMANIACS, PINKY AND THE BRAIN, FREAKAZOID and the best of them all, BATMAN: THE ANIMATED SERIES. I have all four volumes of BATMAN: TAS, and maybe I'll get either ANIMANIACS or PINKY AND THE BRAIN. But it's so weird that the shows I used to watch as a kid are now relics of a long ago time. It's those I remember the most more than primetime tv, fashions, music or movies of the time.

So how about you? What broadsides you and makes you feel all nostalgic and retrospective?

You must be about the same age as me, cuz all those cartoons you listed I can remember watching as a kid. Loved 'em all, too. Old movies, TV shows and music do contribute to making me feel old, but not that badly.

It's mostly the people I know that make me feel old. I have five cousins who are younger than me, and the third oldest is graduating from high school this year. That just makes me feel old cuz I'm like, it's been such a long time now since I was in high school and I don't even know anybody there anymore. Well, except for my few remaining cousins.

I also worked with a guy a couple years back who was about 26, 27 who freaked out one day cuz he heard "Enter the Sandman" on the classic rock station. He remembered listening to it in high school, and he was all, "How old must I be if they're playing music I listened to in high school on the classic rock station?" I had to spend the next hour calming him down. So that's my take anyway.

By the way, on a totally unrelated topic, you're from Regina, Saskatchewan right?

People who don't remember (or worse--weren't born yet!) when "Star Wars" came out, or "Battlestar Galactica" in its 1970's incarnation.

Or that "Buffy The Vampire Slayer" was a movie first.

Or rushing in from the school bus to watch "Dark Shadows"!!! Oh, that Barnabus!

Actually, all I need to feel old is to realize that I have two kids...that will make you feel old...

but what made me feel really old recently was commercial jingles...

I have gone back to school later in life so the folks I am in school with are all in their early 20s (22-25...well I was talking to them after we went to the grocery store and none of them knew...

The Oreo Jingle (Oh, oh, oh, Ice cold milk and an oreo cookie, they forever go together..etc etc.)

The Bologna song...(My bologna has a first name, its O-S-C-A-R, etc etc...

or the Hot Dog song...(I wish I was an Oscar Meyer weiner, cause that is what I'd really like to be...)

i just told them to go away so i could tell "Back in my day" stories to my sons...

Recalling comics used to be a dime each, and they were thick, and had brilliant color, and interesting, thought-provoking stories, and they were called Walt Disney's Comics and Stories, and some of the best were of Donald Duck and the kids.

It hit me just the other day at work, when I was on my lunch break, trying to squeeze in some reading for one of my classes, which brought back memories of grade school and high school, when I would do the same thing (I am a big nerd, I know). And I just realized that it had been 15 years since the last time I did that.
And then it just kinda seemed pointless. What have been doing with the last 15 years of my life?
Boy, that was a crappy feeling.

What made me feel old last year was going and seeing Revenge of the Sith. I remember standing in line, in the rain for hours waiting to see the 1st Star Wars movie back in 1977. It wasnt called the New Hope, Just Star Wars. It was the Summer of my 9th grade year in high school.

Another thing that makes me feel old is the way young women dress these days. There were no tatoos, no nose/lip/tongue/bellybutton rings. There were no hip-hugger pants, and everyone wore sensible shoes. I also don't remember seeing men wearing earrings until the last part of the 80s.

Things have seriously changed. I'm like 40+ years old now!

OMG! Where did the time go? I'm so old!

I loved Barnabas. I'd watch hurry home to watch Dark Shadows after school and run screaming out of the den conviced a vampire was after me.

And yes, I remember Mannix-do you remember Have Gun Will Travel(starring Richard Boone, my Dad's favorite show), Wanted Dead or Alive (starring Steve McQueen-Zoe uses a sawed off shotgun like his) or Rawhide with a very young Clint Eastwood? I saw most of these in reruns but they were still very popular.

But what really makes me feel really old is that my daughter will be able to vote in the next Presidential election.

Watching the Kids at School or at the discotheque makes me feel old, though i´m not (hey, 22 isn´t THAT old...). The slang, the Body language, the clothing... much changed. But - some things never change. There was a quote... let me see if i get it right:

I cheered on the Big Red Machine, and was proud that I was from Cincinnati.

The classic Chuck Jones Looney Toons? The original Star Trek (you know, with Kirk and Spock)? Saw the first run of those.

Who remembers Gunsmoke? Combat?

But anyway, here is what makes me feel OLD:

I feel old when I realize that a woman that I am strongly attracted to is actually young enough to be my daughter… AND she is still old enough that I could legally date her!

I remember all of those shows, and yes, I watched the moon landing live. I was only 6 Earth years old, but I was caught up in the excitment of the adults.

25th anniversary of Raiders? That definitely makes me feel old. That plus the fact that my students were all born a decade after the first Star Wars trilogy was released in the theater. (Remember when movies showed forever at the theater and you had to go back over and over to see it because it wasn't coming out on DVD or HBO the following year?)

I do. Burt Reynolds got his start as a blacksmith there. My friend Arvo Ojala outdrew Jim Arness at the start of every "Gunsmoke" episode. I watched Milton Berle live on TV. We got our first TV in 1948. It had an 8" screen. That TV is still in the family, along with the Philco radio around which the family used to gather on Sunday night for Jack Benny, followed by Phil Harris and Alice Faye. ("That's What I Like About the South!")

The Lone Ranger was on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday nights at 7:30 p.m.

And he wasn't gay.

Great! Just when I thought today was actually going to be a good day! So much for the positive mood that I worked so hard to obtain.

I guess it all depended on what city or state you lived in back in the 70s in order to be able to say that, so drop the "Insert loud buzzer here" stuff. No fashion is evenly distributed around the world, starting and finishing at the same time.

From the sounds of it, it looks like the city you lived in was way into dressing like cheap whores long before my city got into it. I personally never liked the styles and fashions back then because I came from a pretty conservative city.

I visited friends in England in 1969, from my home in Michigan, and attended Royal Albert Hall to see Led Zeppelin. I also went to many concerts in and around the Detroit area, Rolling Stones, more Led Zep, Cream, etc., and was vitally interested in observing fashion, because it was part of my job. So when I said hip huggers were the fashion rage at that time, that is exactly what I meant.

Next time it won't be a loud buzzer, it'll be the hook to drag you off stage for running your lip.

And no, I'm not very nice, not when someone contradicts me without any FACTS.

Not to mention the things that happens on TV and stuff...videos including. I don't know what the trends are and etc and when I see or hear younger kids, I roll my eyes and say, "You damn kid, you don't know a darn thing"

LOTS of things make me feel old. I certainly remember all of the aforementioned cartoons (I burned a theme song cd just for the cartoons of the 80's and early 90's...because everyone should have a copy of the Heathcliff theme song, etc. LOL).

- Remembering a time before cds...when you would hold a boom box up to the radio to record a song.

- Remembering when Atari was the hottest video game system around and the Apple II was revolutionary.

- Remembering when My Little Ponies, Care Bears, and Strawberry Shortcake had their first run...not this new crap. When do Jem and She-Ra come back???

- Saying things like "...and knowing is half the battle", and getting strange looks because of it.

- Sarah Michelle Gellar and Michelle Trachtenberg
on All My Children in 1993, before they were Whedon girls

- Lastly, I know it's not as awe-inspiring as it could be, but the #1 thing that makes me feel old is that my 10 year high school reunion is this year. When did I get old enough to be 27?!?

pinky and the brain! animaniacs! i used to watch "twin peaks" and "dark shadows" too...
i was born the year star wars came out but i grew up watching it... i remember thinking "enter the sandman" was so awesome. and i remember the *moment* nine inch nails' "pretty hate machine" hit mtv. i went to see trent for the first time in concert this last year and i felt old. i'm not even thirty yet. don't you think that living in a youth-obsessed culture where actresses have a shelf-life of 15 - 30 has something to do with this too?
i feel old, but i know i'm not. but i feel it, especially when i go see movies at the theatre by my house. i know i wore more clothes than that when i was 13, dammit.

My ego is not involved here, but it appears yours is, so I will indulge you. You actually sound like you are gonna cry all over this! LOL!

I was born in 1962, and about time 1969 rolled around I was 7 Earth years old. At seven, I was very much aware of what the fashion was...seeing that it was pushed in my face by everyone and television. You may have been a silly bunny at seven years old, but not myself. I remember what people wore.

I'm GLAD I wasnt 18 during the 60s...the 70s was my decade and it was a stupid one at that, but at least it got us some distance away from the 60s, AND the only good thing about the 70s was Led Zepplin, so through all your whining, I'll agree with that, but the Rolling Stones? You need some serious help.

People in my area were dressed sensibly and the true fashions of the decadent world didnt really show up in our prefect community until around 1972, which by the way I was fully self-aware, and also whoring myself up in the latest fashions like everyone else, but hip-huggers was not around very much if not at all.

The hip-huggers that did exist look nothing like what is being passed for hip-huggers today, even you should know that. but overall, my perfect little Donna Reed community wouldnt go for anything too outlandish.

My point to all of this is that a lot of the styles now are very much different than what I was brought up with. I didnt have to privilge like you of growing up in a dirty, socially-engineered, drug and crime infested city like yourself, so I guess you got to see more styles and fashion earlier than myself....lucky you, but I still to this day think earrings on a guy looks stupid.

So you did all this flying around in the 60s huh? Finally I can call someone "Old Fart" and get away with it.

I'm happy that I failed your test, but you have to remember, we were all having a jolly good time telling people what made us feel old, and then you hopped in and pulled that tuff-guy act about facts and hip-huggers, therefore, you Mr man are the wet towel in this topic!

I wrote that under the assumption that you could tell it was complete sarcasm, but it appears you took some of it seriously...did someone forget their medication today?

Actually, most of the time I add a lot to discussions, but also there are threads where I toss a dart or two out there, which I see most people doing from time to time.

This will seem kinda odd. I know the music I listened to in my heyday is now 20 odd years old and that doesn't bother me, I kind of feel that it was "of that time."

What surprises me is hitting iTunes for a song that I thought was just a couple of years old and discovering that it was a hit 10 or 15 years ago.

I was never a big fan of "House" music for example but there was a catchy tune that I found myself humming all one summer, suddenly I discover that it's 13 years old --- how did that happen?

Looking at all the Hollywood remakes/parodies of my favourite television shows when I was a kid and thinking, for God's sake WHY?

I remember the original Starsky and Hutch, the original Dukes of Hazzard, Bewitched, The Brady Bunch, et. al., with great fondness. These new versions are just crap. It makes me wonder how they get the go-ahead for these things, and yet Firefly/Serenity has to struggle. Then I remember that the world pretty much sucks, and THEN I feel old. ;P

OK, cult TV time. Anyone remember a Japanese puppet series called 'Star Fleet'?

I used to watch it when I was a nipper (I'm talking early '80s here, I'm not so creakin' as some of you folks!), but thinking back now, a few of its plot details seem a little familiar...

Large, long-necked ship? Check. Disparate crew of scientists and mercenaries? Check. Enemy called the Alliance? Check. Young girl aboard with mysterious past, who may or may not have special psychic powers? Check.

No wonder I remember it so fondly...

Aren't we all supposed to be Browncoats together? Talking about different types of fashions that were cool at different times?

By the way, platform shoes were the height of fashion for men in previous centuries in Europe, and I don't think guys with earrings look stupid---after all, even SHAKESPEARE wore one!

In previous centuries, men wore lace and silks and brocaded frockcoats, buckled shoes and stockings, wigs, earrings & perfume, and no one questioned their masculinity, or they would run you through with a sword! It was only the Victorians who decided that men should all dress in black suits and never be allowed to wear fun clothes, and it was only the hippies of the 60's and 70's who rebelled against the Victorian ideas. Their rebellion was crushed, and men were forced back into their only permitted colours (beige, black, dark blue, dark green, and grey) acting as a dull background to us women in all our colourful glory. What makes me feel old -- aside from the fact that I remember everything which everyone else here says they can remember?

BTW, how far back one's memory goes varies from person to person. I can remember things back to when I was 13 months old (they've been confirmed by people who were there). Granted, I don't have typical day-to-day memories prior to 3 (and many of my earliest memories are no longer as crisp as they used to be).

Many of the people I know have trouble remembering things earlier than 5, and to me, that seems ridiculous, particularly as my memory goes back so much further. (I distinctly remember the birth of my sister when I was 2, and even recall exactly what I said, who was there, and where everyone was standing when they brought her in through the door of our house.)

All of my grandparents (now long deceased) and my Dad (also deceased) could remember things as a small children, but my Mom claims to remember virtually nothing from her childhood (including much of school). Weird.

Regarding the person who said 13 channels -- my earliest memory of TV was of only having 3 channels (and all of them on UHF) -- just the local affiliates for CBS, ABC & NBC.

I remember seeing a poster for "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" at the local cinema and thinking that Bond didn't look the same.

I watched either the first or second episode of "Star Trek" with my Dad, (I think it was "The Corbomite Manuever")and thought it was stupid (never got into it until a decade later, with the reruns).

By the time "Star Wars" was out, I was already driving.

I actually feel much older than I am, but still don't look my age.

The other day, I was bored, sitting around nothing much to do (sad life indeed). I usually pull out one of the ole Firefly DVDs or Serenity and pop it in. However, since my daughter and wife are not nearly as obsessive about the 'verse as I, I decided to take pity on them.

I pulled out an "old" VHS tape and popped it in. It was the last VHS that my wife and I purchased and I frankly forgot we owned it. I pressed the [PLAY] button and settled in to watch my re-found movie. As the soft sounds of the flute played through my speakers, I suddenly had an attack of age perception.

I grabbed the VHS box and stared at the date printed on it. For some reason it only seemed like yesturday, but I was just floored by the fact that "Titanic" was released almost 9 years ago.

Time flies when you're having fun I guess

While my daughter will always be my little baby, every now-and-then I look at her and marvel at how much she's changed over the years and wonder where I was when it happened.

Along those lines, about 10 years ago I used to drive a van for senior citizens (most of them near 90, and most of them female). They used to get a kick out of it when they'd complain about an ache or something, and I'd tell them, "If you think it's bad now, wait until your MY age." Granted, I could've been the grandson of any of them, but they would laugh and enjoy it just the same.

And I was never so embarrassed as one hot summer day I was driving an elderly woman who was wearing a heavy winter coat. I was in short sleeves and shorts, and dying from the heat, and I looked at her and said, "Mrs. So and So, you're making me hot just looking at you in that coat."

Well, she took that she was making me "hot" not in the way I'd intended it, and everyone around had a good laugh.

Yes, I remember Dark Shadows-used to run home from school to watch it only to run out of the TV room (yes, we called it that back then) screaming and laughing with fright and thrills.

I remember Mike Conners as Mannix, too-ultra cool guy and standing in a long line at the movie theater to see Jaws and looking at every wave at the beach that summer to see if a shark was there.

BTW what really made me feel old was the mail this week. My daughter got her invitation to the Senior Breakfast the first day of school to kick off her senior year in high school. She can also vote in the next election for President so I'm feeling ultra old right now.

I do, on occasion, feel old (yes, I know I'm only twenty). It usually happens when I think of the younger celebrities that are currently popular. Hillary Duff? Lindsay Lohan? Rihanna? All younger than me. When I think about the fact that they're all busy being big stars and I'm sitting here working a desk job, it not only makes me feel old, but is also a little depressing. But then again, I don't think I'd enjoy the celebrity life. Getting chased by paparazzi? Where does that get fun?

Oh how I miss watching girls in tube tops! Especially the terrycloth ones. Just something about them that made me... well, you get the picture.

For the record, I visited the Smithsonian last month and was wandering around their "History of Computers" exhibit. Along with a big old main-frame computer, they had a huge deck of punched cards and a textbook on FORTRAN on diplay.

Yep, it was the same textbook I used in college.

I felt old yesterday when a new coworker said she was interested in photography, she used her dad's antique camera, her dad bought the camera right before she was born, in 1981!
I graduated from high school in 1984!

And I work at a university, every year the incoming students seem younger and younger.

My sister had a computer course in high school...Yeah the ones with the punch cards. She broke it. She typed in that it's mother wore combat boots. I kid you not.

I took programming courses in BASIC in the early 80's.

When my kids (students, I'm a teacher) act superised that I play video games and then look at me quizzically(sp?) when I tell them that I started out with a pong machine, an IBM PC Jr., and an Atari 2600. The usual response I get is "What's Atari?"

Hey I know who Bobby Sherman is and I am 33( well just barely)...also I know all the words to Bobby Darrin's songs and I kknow most of the Kingston Trio and the Brothers Four....Ok so this is because my dad loves them and I adore my dad and sat and listened with him and ate homemade popcorn ( this is an activity he called imprinting) so now whenever I hear one of those sogs I smile and think of my dad:)

Saw Raiders in the theater. Had no clue it was that long ago.

Loved watching Hart to Hart, Rockford files, Bonanza, Little House, Have gun Will Travel. Though mostly in reruns, They still looked good to me.

Eighties music on oldies station. Talk about BS.

Can't stand the fact all these retard little kids think that cars weren't fast before The Fast And the Furious. They never rode in a car that didn't come from the factory with seat belts, air bags, and a radio and could easily push 140 without a bottle.
