Jimmy Buffet was the first thing that popped into my mind. and i could see him singing to Paveratti. although i'm picturing him having fun with singing to it rather than being something he deeply enjoys.

i could also picture him listening to some fun stuff like Gogol Bordello or Flogging Molly.

In THE SERENITY GIG as well as BLUE HAND BLUES, I allude to Wash's speculative musical tastes. I always thought he'd be into a lot of classic rock (The Beatles, The Stones, The Who, Pink Floyd, The Band, Led Zeppelin, you name it), but he'd also dig Tenacious D, Barenaked Ladies and any bands that have a sense of humor to their songs.

And ironically, he's be more into dance floor songs than Zoe, even though like all white guys, he cannot dance.

That was back in the 80s when it was ok to think Tom Cruise was hot and Kenny Loggins was cool.

LOL regarding Wash as a sensitive boy...I was seeing him sing to Chicago's "If you leave me now" but wasn't certain if Chicago would be melodramatic enough for him. I had forgotten about his "sensitive" side, so Chicago and perhaps the Bee Gees would be appropriate as well.

"Ride of the Valkyries" is a piece from WAGNER (and NOT ...(oh gawd)... NOT... by MISTER Johann Sebastian (the imMORtal) Bach - it's specifically from, the 2nd portion of Wagner's "Ring of the Nibelungen" opera cycle, namely, "Die Walküre." Already been done in a movie, however, and... specifically... probably never will be a better usage of it (or, perhaps, any other piece of classical music, for that matter) than the air-mobile cavalry attack scene in Francis Ford Coppola's "Apocalypse Now." "Can you say, 'I love the smell of napalm in the morning,' kids? ...I knew you could." Yup, only on fireflyfans.com can one find a quote of Mr. Rogers (allegedly) quoting Robert Duvall in a Francis Ford Coppola movie.

Now... you were warmer on "Night on Bald Mountain." That piece was by Modest Moussorsky, which Stokowski conducted a very, very famous recording of, namely, the usage of the piece at the end of Disney's original "Fantasia." There, it brilliantly (deLICIOUSLY) segued into Schubert's transcendant choral work, "Ave Maria."

Now, the next - "In the Hall of the Mountain King." This is by Edvard Grieg, Norway's greatest composer (see http://www.mnc.net/norway/EHG.htm) and... again, not Bach. Mind you, not to detract from Bach - I mean, I'm glad that the Wash-music-day made you investigate all this fabulous music - I mean... (check it out) Look What You Found(!!) that you'd never heard before (I'll wager)... I figger you won SOME kind of contest, eh? Are any of the folks on this forum aware that there are people on this page - or even alive in the 'Verse - who are Every Bit As (Absurdly) Passionate About ...Classical - and Jazz - and African - and Celtic music... as they are about all things Firefly/Serenity? ...'Course, I was THRILLED that I encountered someone on this site who knew who th'hell (the late, great and Immortal) Vivian Stanshall was. Anyway... "Mountain King" ...is from Grieg's 'Peer Gynt'... originally a ballet but mostly heard as an orchestral suite. Also on this ballet - just as highly recommended - one of history's most troublingly familiar melodic memories... an "ohrwürm," as the German's so charmingly call it... is another piece called "Anitra's Dance." Check it out... see if you can get it out of your head any better than ..."Froo-ty Oaty Bars, make a man out of a mouse"...

Now, I like how your suggestions are significantly cinematic - like the "Ride of the Valkyries," for example. Your next - again not by Bach - is "Also Sprach Zarathustra," the introduction to a tone-poem by Richard (NOT Johann, "The Waltz King") Strauss that, eventually, evolves into an achingly, heart-renchingly, beautiful piece for solo violin and orchestra... in fact, I'm reminded of Greg Edmondsen's painful violin piece for "The Funeral" episode of "Firefly," that he specifically wrote commemorating the death of "Firefly," because it had just been cancelled. Anyway... there probably is no more iconic a piece of music than "Also Sprach Zarathustra" so far as movies go, it being the principal theme to Stanley Kubrick's "2001: A Space Odyssey," a movie which, if it had never been made... well... without "2001," there would have been no "Star Wars," nor its progeny such as... dare I say it(?)... "Serenity"... (??)

Lastly... just to mention... I totally agree with all these suggestions (although i think my suggestion for The Beatles' "Cry, Baby, Cry" is the only one on this forum I've heard that actually references a dialog quote directly from Joss Whedon, namely the original pilot of the "Firefly" TV series: ..."Cry baby cry," says Mal; "Make your mother sig

Well, since he wears those Hawaii shirts and is a rather funny and relaxed guy mostly, he would definitly love Jack Johnson. He might also like Ben Harper. Neil Young could be his style, too. And he would love Edible Rock. All very relaxed music, with a lot of great guitar playing, cool lyrics and even though some things are criticized with the overall notion that the 'verse is a wonderful place and life is very well worse it.
