We've got some talented writers.

I've done audio production for around 15 years; spent most my life in radio. I love radio dramas. Lots of anime and some brit scifi fans make fanfic audio dramas; I've voiced som Doctor Who and some crap anime ones.

Would anyone think the idea ludicrous if we considered putting together some of our own fanfic eps of Firefly? I've got the studio. I can track down sfx and music.

Where would you broadcast it? Who would you get to play all the characters? How would you get all the voice talents to record their voices for your "radio" show? Who would write the scripts?
Just curious.

I kind of love this idea but kind of fear it. I was just reading an article about the new Star Wars: Clone Wars cartoons coming to Cartoon Network and how, except for Anthony Daniels, no actors are available for their voice roles. The idea of "scab" voices bothers me, especially with the beloved crew of Serenity.

But...Ohh... Firefly radio shows.

There would need to be a narrator, of course. How do we keep this from sounding like The Dukes of Hazard?

I've done quite a bit of drama. Would so love to see this take place and to be involved. Why not just put them together and mix them into audio files. They would take a lot less space than the videos. Though I must say I've seen some excellent fan vides from Star Wars fans. The HO brothers (AWESOME STUFF)

Anyway it could be done as a group setting in a studio and then remixed or even have a "cast" record seperate audio tracks and then have them produced and mixed together. I would so love to be a part of this shiny project. I am limited as far as equipment or software, but I consider my self dramatically talented, not to mention I taught drama for 5 years. and very enthusiastic. Oh, let's make this thing fly. We would have to get some fanfic authors permission, but I am sure these could be done with no red tape. This is so Ultra-shiny!!! We could do some type of tryouts via audio casette or submitted wav files.

I know it may not be the same as done by Joss & crew, but hey. It would sure keep Serenity flying. (e-mail me if you'd like)

Besides I've never watched any of the fanfics on the screen, but I've seen every one I've read. (think on that)

The way most of these work is that fans do the voicing...and I admit I've got some problems with that too.

They don't get broadcast (unless you can afford timebuys and legal issues with Fox and Mutant Enemy...), but they get posted on the net just like written fanfic.

Check out www.floorten.com for some Doctor Who examples. For Who the idea eventually grew into professional shows hiring the real actors and selling cd's. that would be at www.doctorwho.co.uk. The fans took over he show when the BBC abandoned it, started series of books and kept things going.

So, do we contact authors of the best fanfics and ask if we can use their work, or do we let the authors come forward and write brand new stuff, or do we contact the authors of the best fanfics and ask them if they would like to produce a new script for the show? I'm kinda liking this idea. It sounded crazy, at first. Now it sounds like it really has some potential!

OK, here's what I see we need to do to proceed:

1: keep talking. Here and on email. I'm at dugwho@excite.com.

2: decide how we want to do a script. Adapt/ write from scratch? I think our first try should be fairly short; 10-15 minutes.

3: Auditions to see if we's got people who can sound like REAL people. Audio shows work best if we focus on about 4-5 characters at a time (things get confusing with more), so we may be able to have multiple "episodes" for different character groups? Like Mal/ Zoe/ Jayne/ Wash and Inara/ Book/ Simon/ River.

And on my end, I need to get copies of all the episodes so I can pull sfx and music. Damned dialup; too slow to download. Suggestions?

Just a rather random thought here for the process, but perhaps for this radio show thought, we create a new crew, perhaps another ship out there, and do a lot of Firefly ties ins..

(spin off, I know.. but this way people don't feel bad when someone does a bad impersonation, and new characters can be created without Fox saying we violated them somehow...

As far as voices I could do a decent mal or simon. Really wanna do wash. Ain't quite got the depth for book. So any young ladies out there who like to mumble unintelligible phrases, we need a river.
I have to say this whole idea is really sounding good. We should start with a shorter simple fan fic. Something strongly character based, not requiring too much in the way of FX. That one called A little R&R would be shiny. Not to mention we have to come up with some villians, and they can sound any way they want to. Here's the link for the R&R fanfics.

The spin-off crew sounds interesting. But man I love the original characters so much.

We're not making money off of it. It's a labor of love, so fox can pound sand. It's just like any other fanfic, with the right disclaimers I think we might be alright. Consider it "a fanfic for the visually impaired."

Also, we should see who volunteers for voices before we discount their abilities. We may be surprised.

I could probably do a pretty good Kaylee. I mean I am female and her age and all. I may be able to do River...I think.

So how are auditions working and when? Are we talking posting or emailing some wav/mp3 files somewhere or what?

As far as recording goes, I see you have a studio and all, but I liked that idea of separate files per cast. I have a ton of audio equiptment because we have a studio to record music for our band. (which reminds me, if you need an extra music, I have a band and we have a violin player).

If there's going to be only a few characters per cast, you could work on more than one ep at a time.

This will be fun.

I'm not sure of how much of an accent but I'm no actor or some such either. never learned anything about speaking and never tried it. I'm not even sure my voice would fit anyone. but that's just because I don't really know how to judge that.

but I'm sure there are native speaking women out there willing to do it. aren't there?

These are great ideas, tho I haven't seen anything as to how anyone is actually going to do it.

So, for what it's worth, and because I have seen the idea advanced elsewhere: I write fanfic. I have done a teensy amount of voiceover. I have access to hardware and software with which to record and edit.

If folks dig it, I could try recording the first Browncoat Chronicles story (When Firefly Fans Attack: The Search for LifeofWily) as a pilot of sorts.

If folks can't dig it, no harm no foul.

One thing I am noticing looking at the current existing fan fics is that few of them are in a "scripted format" We would have to either request th ok of the authors to alter the format (which i ain't certainly comftorable with, I mean for some folks that's their art) or request permission to do the altering ourselves (which might be even more unsettling). Of course the idea is we like what they wrote so much we want to put it to life. Some of the fanfics are great at setting & narration, though theses have greater tedency to drag in an audio format. In that setting people are looking for characters & voices. Hmmmmmm. How to work around that. Unless, we just write the scripts ourselves. ugh, rock & hard place.

I think Sarahetc hit on the right idea. Unless we are willing (which I doubt) to have a different browncoat in a different area of the country perform each different voice of the cast, then send those pieces to one person, so they could be put together, we will have to use another method. We wil need a narrator. Someone to tie it all together. Someone to do most of the voices, perhaps getting people near them to come in and do a few voices. It seems only natural that the author also be the narrator - to retain the trueness of the script.
Of course, there is no reason that multiple projects can't go on. Let's see which format we like best. Maybe we can get a whole, great-big, Firefly-radio-drama library. Shiny.

Great-big Firefly-radio-drama library, hehe!

I think in all fairness to people who live far apart from each other and since so many people want to be involved, that one person does one character, but obviously it doesn't have to go that way. Look at the Simpsons, but you know, since so many people...

I'm a writer. I write constantly. Firefly is my favorite TV show in the whole wide world. It only seems natural that I would jump on this opportunity to help write a script...except I'm a bit afraid to. I'm afraid it will flop. I've tried a FF fanfic once...it was dumb, but then again, it was a picture book, so whatever. I guess I don't feel I am worthy enough to tamper with such a masterpiece and can't get my brain to take free range of the territory. The boarders of the plot and characters nag at me. Anyway, I will think about it and see if I can come to grips with reality.

Thanks.

Ok, I was telling my dad about this thing and before I could even finish my sentence he goes "OOO!" You see, he's always wanted to be one of those "radio voice" people because he can make all different sort of voices. So I asked him if he wanted to tryout or whatever and he said he would try if I showed him the characters. So I put in "War Stories" and he was listening to the voices, studying them real hard. He said Book has a very laid back voice and that Simon is "windy". He said that no one really has a very distinctive voice and that he would prefer to do a non-main character b/c they are more interesting. As it turns out he can do a pretty good Niska. I put in Shindig and had him listen to Badger's British w/ hint of american southern-ish accent and all and he said Badger has the most distinctive and interesting voice and that he would like to do him. So if anyone can write a Badger part, that'd be shiny. He said leave the main characters to the true die hard fans (aka you guys, not him). So yeah, that's it.

It's called Behind the Wall and it should be about 12 minutes long. It wrote it in radio-screen-play format so it's in play format but it doesn't describe visuals or anything, but nothing is lost without them, you see? If you want to use it you can. I do have one small point and it's just a feeling and a personal opinion. one character didn't sound too right to me: Inara. but I can't pin it down really. she just didn't sound too much like herself. the other's were fine though and the story was entertaining. maybe it's a bit problematic to establish a faster than light drive that actually works. would maybe have been better to have it not work. but then again it may opens up a lot of other doors to explore in the future and so comes out as a good thing in the end?

let's just do it and look were it takes us.

how was it planned to 'audition' the roles? I'd think it would be best if someone provided a few sample lines for each major character (soundfiles form the EPs and the script for it) and make them available for interested people and they try to get these lines down as good as they can and send their audios back to the jury or whatever. so someone who is not sure about his/her own voice could do more than one character and the jury decides which character fits which 'actor' best. or something like that. we aren't hollywood superstars here (and there's no money involved whatsoever) so I think the bitching about who gets which role could be kept at a minimum.

what do you say?

That audition format is the one I've seen used the most often. I like it, so let's do it.

I like the script. Let's do this thing.

J. Leigh, could you email me about it at dugwho@excite.com? I want to make sure I understand how you want some sections to sound.

I'm going to disappear for a few days. My wife and I are heading out of town for the weekend, we'll be back monday night but I don't know when I'll get a chance to hit the computer. Don't everybody freak out if you email me and get no responses.

We got a show to do. Shiny.

I'll finish up the script that I'm working on and post it to the Blue Sun Room just the same. If it doesn't make it to "sequel" status, then I think that it may be a cool fanfic, just the same.

I would suggest that instead of implying one central production doing "Firefly" as in the characters of the series . . . that you create a clearing house sort of rotating series along the lines of the http://www.ladyxfilms.com film project or even something a bit more loose where groups from around the globe can create their own fanfics set in The Verse . . . orginal characters and plotlines set within the world/background of The Verse but which may or may not have small cameo appearances by characters from the series.

This would allow for more variety in material as well as flexible actors - folks basically write material appropriate to the people they have available to work with.

Well, glad people like my story. I based it off of a story I wrote like three years ago. At least the plot and concept. The weird thing is that in the original story, the pilot (Izzy) sounded just like Wash, all funny and scaredy-cat and I used to draw pictures of all my characters and Izzy looked like a young Wash with the yellow vest and spiky blond hair. It's weird.

ANYWAY, back to this thing here. When we get this thing off the ground, I can make a little weppage thingy for it for cast and crew to see updates and all. Post the scripts or whatever, if you want me to. I probably don't have the harddrive to post the final products themselves, but I can link to who ever is posting that. I don't know, it was just an idea. I won't do it if you don't want me to.

Dug, I e-mailed you. My address is wrong on here because I forgot the "@yahoo.com" part. So if anyone needs me, I'm at no1getzs0da@yahoo.com . Speaking of which, how do those little message thingies work on this site. I've never understood it. I see how you can send messages to other people, but how do you know if you recieve one? Just curious.

Back to the story, the fact that the Light Drive worked probably isn't too important. Maybe it didn't work. The point is they were being paid to test it whether it worked or not. Since they survived, they get paid. Maybe it didn't actually go faster than light, but I suppose it's irrelevent. Sorry if Inara didn't sound like Inara. She was based off a character from the original story. I tried to get her saying what she needed to say in an Inara-sortof-way.

Thanks.

I liked it. I love the stories that they never have to leave the ship or have some outside source; the ones that focus on the characters, like this one. It seemed to me that Jayne was a bit emotional, but I suppose that's okay. He's done that before. I really like the ending too. Very true to the characters and good dialogue.

I wrote another one, though maybe this is just a fanfic and that's all. Again, based on something I wrote long ago, but changed quite a bit to fit. It's basically a River story, though Simon and Mal are in it a bit too.

http://www.fireflyfans.net/sunroomitem.asp?i=269

Be honest. I can take it. I don't really have a lot of experience in creative writing beyond the one class I took, so it is impossible for me to say whether this is excellent or crapolla. Since there is no way for me to get my voice from point A to point B via the computer. This is my contribution to Dug's plan. Bon appetite.

(Now I will take the time to read the other fan-fics that this thread generated.)

The whole idea about new groups of ppl in stories works, I was bored last year in my lunch period, so I started writing this Fanfic, It involed none of the main characters and was about theese two browncoats who destroy an alliance inspection ship becouse they had illigal goods but end up with one of thm stowed away on their ship on accedent. I hadent gotten far, but new crews can be so much more fun! I mean, its fun writing about our motly group, but they cant do every thing. Heck, oyu could make a mudfarmer story just for a change .

"Oh, yeah. Let's all here it for the good Alliance."

Killer! I like the premise. True to the characters. Excellent vocab. I like Jayne and Kaylee fighting. I can so see that. Can't wait to see what happens.

http://www.fireflyfans.net/sunroomitem.asp?i=277

If Dug thinks my work is worthy, I would be honored if it made it to production, depending on how many eps Dug was fixing to do. If it's crap, at least I can look at myself in the mirror and say that I did my part to help a good idea. As always, be brutally honest. We don't learn from our successes half as much as from our failures.

p.s. Has anyone heard from Dug yet?

Check out the website I'm putting together: www.fireflydramas.bravehost.com.

they will block postings of MP3's, but we will work around that somehow. It gives us a base to get moving from.

I just emailed about the script; we'll start moving fast.
