Ok, at risk of invoking the rage of catholics everywhere, in my own little world I am dumping St Valentine and putting St. Quirinus, patron saint against obsession in his place.
No more will we have to put up with listening to the slurpy slurpy suck suck noises of couples who are too old to blame it on their hormones!
No longer will we watch agast as the commercial world leaps onto the bandwagon in an attempt to suck even more money out of our pockets in the name of the twee and the offensively cheap looking!
no longer will we rage in vain when our favorite returants become booked out by couples guilt tripped into showing each other a bit of affection!
Ney!
Ok, so this is brought to you by the fact that I have had to extremely crap trips into work this weekend. And today it was made even worse by the fact that I had to sit and grin and bear it whilst a couple sat and...well, i'm not sure what they were dooing, from the angles I'd say he was sucking her nose and she was vigourously licking his chin - take all sorts I suppose...
Even the bloody pigeons are at it! Mind you... the pigeons are always at it.
I even went bast a Law firm that had paper hearts and little cupids in their window. Lawyers? with hearts? Has the world gone mad?!?!?!
Any way, I'm re-arranging the catholic calendar to suit my self (its not a new idea trust me) And installing St Quirinus as a possible stop cap against the tacky hallmark barrage.
And to celebrate (and because we've all been a bit listless of late) I propose a game...
OF CALVINBALL!!!

ooops!
I don't beleive anyone should need a excuse to share candy, flowers and gifts with their counterpart. However I do approve of the Spanish holiday: books and lovers day. Couples exchange books and roses, the literature is often tastefully erotic. It's a bit more grown up than Valentines day and at least in my neck of the woods has yet to be discovered for commercial exploitation.
As always I will have to sit out this round of Calvinball as local strategic arms limitation treaties dissalow the use of flash-bang grenades and I'm fresh out of Mexican dynamite.

I have to say I kinda like the idea of books and lovers day, even if the idea of someone giving me a naughty (even tastefully naughty) book slightly mortifying.
Is it a sign of my total dorkdom that when you said books and lovers I immedietly thought of Shepard Book and thought 'ooo er'?

But I've come through
We are the champions - my friends
And we'll keep on fighting - till the end -
We are the champions -
We are the champions
No time for losers
'Cause we are the champions - of the world -
I've taken my bows

You brought me fame and fortuen and everything that goes with it

I thank you all -
But it's been no bed of roses
No pleasure cruise -
I consider it a challenge before the whole human race -

I'm sorry to say this but that reminds me so much of a converstion betwwen Mr Collins and Mr Bennet in Pride and Predjudice, Bennet and Lizzie are prodding Collins and trying not to laugh out loud (or in Lizzies case spit her soup all over the table cloth) when he tells them that he sits at home composing compliments for whenever he should happen meet his most condescending benefactor, Lady Catherine De Burg...
I suppose you'd have to be a hardened Austen devotee and used to quoting both her and Firefly at unsuspecting people, to get how they are both extremely funny, but...
Is it crazy that I want to compare Whedon to Austen? In that they are both absolute adepts at using seemingly throwaway dialogue and actions to convey character?

I know EXACTLY what you mean.
I love how Mr Bennett asks Mr Collins if he composes these compliments ahead of the time or makes them up on the spot and Mr Collins says he amuses himself by arranging little compliments that would be appropriate for any situation but he likes to give them "as unrehearsed an air as possible."
Man I LOVE Jane Austin.
You can definitely compare Whedon and Austin. Both with the witty word play.

hmmm.... what would Mal do?
Well for starter he probably wouldn't wear his corset so tight.
He'd employ Zoe to work on the court case, she'd get results in less than no time, especially if she had Jayne behind her to grunt meaningfully at people (I'd bet even in breeches the man could intimidate anyone)
He'd let Kaylee take a brush to parts of the house to make it a little less bleak.
and then it would be pretty much solid quippage...

St. Dympha can be the patron saint of going crazy and falling asleep.
And I think it's entirely possible to find a Firefly quote to fit every occasion. It is something I strive to do myself.

Hey Jadehand. I liked the Blue Sun manufactured Baby 3000 too!
I think Serenity hit on a good idea by saying that it was connected to scarman on Boros. I'm thinking I'm gonna run with that.
Seryn, sorry to hear you're under the weather. I like hot apple cider with cinnamon when I'm sick. Don't know if it helps, but it sure is good.
Go easy on Valentines day. I'm a diehard romantic. That said, I don't buy into the cheese factor. If there is no thought behind the gift, don't bother. I don't care how expensive it is.

There's this fruit juice blend that's really really good, can't rememeber right now what all's in it but it's mostly orange juice and I know it's got some pineapple and banana as well. Loads of vitamin C and tastes wonderful and I'm drinking as much of it as I can. Soon as the meds kick in and this cough subsides enough I'm gonna fire up Firefly Talk in my iPod and curl up under the comforter for a nap. This mess has had me for over two weeks now, it's about worn out its welcome.

Oh hey Spinland, Sorry I didn't read far enough back to see you were sick as well.
I recommend the hot apple cider to you too. Lean over the mug and breathe the vapours. Has helped me in the past.

MMmm hot cider. That's nice. I like the cinnamon. And I do the same thing: lean over the mug and breathe in the vapors.
But I also like juice. I love pineapple juice when I'm sick. And orange and pomegranate and cranberry and combinations of those and others. I like juice.
And tea. Nice hot tea with a touch of honey. Don't like the lemon so much, but I'll drink it if I have a sore throat.
And gingerale when I'm sick is nice, too.
I'm just fond of beverages in general. Always, but especially when I'm sick.
Now, all you ill people, feel better soon!!

Pad thai is low fat. And veery tasty.
The stupid diet book I'm supposed to be following has all these recipies in the back that are all so bland and tasteless so I rewrote half of them, adding spices and whatnot to give them flavour. You can eat healthy and still eat tasty all the same.
And why are you eating turkey? You don't like turkey.

SAFE! News flash!: terrible-desparate situation on Boros coming to a head!
Seryn: Don't forget SR's chinese cold remedy. Kung Poa ______, (blank to be filled with your choice of chicken, pork, beef, shrimp, veggies, or tofu), rice or noodles, and hot tea. Ask the cook to go heavy on the POA! The chiles will pummel your sinuses into a state of submission only found in third world torture chambers. Any soy sauce used in the recipe will help return sodium to your system. (It's essential electrolyte.) The Rice or noodles are easy to digest carbs for fuel for any fever. The hot tea will keep you warm, steamy, hydrated, and will help you sweat the toxins out of your system.
Have a orange for desert.

I'm ok, i had pasta (someone said carbs were good) with pesto sauce (olive oil to soothe my throat) and tea has stopped making me dizzy, so i'm feeling better about the universe.
My neice was here tonight and she always makes me feel better. We covered a paperplate with glitter and paint and stuck doily wings and a feather tail on it and called in Flower the Bird, so how can my day have been bad?
Its good to see that what they thik you have is one of those things that go away, at least theres an end in sight. And in the meantime theres massages. (can't say i'm a massage person myself, personally they don't appeal at all, and my mothers a qualified masseuse and relflexologist, so its not lack of exposure, just for some reason the only thing I can cope with is her - and her alone - rubbing my thumb to blunt a headache. Everyone reckons my commitment phobia, my paranoia, my personal space issues and my superiority complex are all very closely linked. They also say I should be in therapy, but hey, at the moment I know my issues, what would happen if I got rid of them? a whole new crop of wild cards would grow in their place!)
EDIT: Ok, i'm also drugged up to the eyeballs with night nurse, it apparently makes you talk alot about things that are best left secret!

Actually, I am better than ninety five percent of people.
Um, how was it worded? er... Higher the 95% of her peer group in.... my dyslexia test, in things like vocabulary, spatial recognition (probably not spelling though) information retention etc etc blah blah blah, it was top five of my age group, another set of tests it was higher than 86%.
(EDIT: hang on, wait, have I gone on about this before?)
then of course, with the dyslexia it was more like 56% and 48%. Which I suppose is good is, but its still like being the kid who has to wear waterwings.
I wasn't kidding about being able to take over the world if I wasn't dyslexic, hell if I wasn't I could probably understand what Citizen was saying in those converstions about space travel.
As it is, I think I get it... then its gone
