I know that this is supposed to be relating to Firefly, but everybody on these boards seem very nice and pretty cool so I would just like to get a bigger picture of you guys. So what is your favorite band? And I'm talking favorite, not the band that you're into right now, or that you were into 6 months ago or any of that crap. And if it does tie into Firefly then even better! My favorite band is Led Zeppelin!!!!!! Jimmy Page is so freaking awesome. Feel free to explain why or list songs or whatever you want.

Funeral for a Friend.

They're a punkish-metalish-sometimes-acoustic rock band from Britain.

The song "Juneau" actually hurts to listen to. It's so heartfelt, yet still really rockin.

Check em out. Their first album, "Casually Dressed and Deep in Conversation" is great. Highly recommended.

LOL! I know what you mean about accents though. The British accent itself doesn't grab me, but I'm an absolute sucker for a Scottish accent. Seriously. Best accent in the world. I even find myself weirdly attracted to groundskeeper Willie from The Simpsons.

Sorry. Been to Yorkshire, and the accent just didn't have the same effect.

Mind you, I was at a convention for science fiction and fantasy writing earlier this month, and it turned out to be the same weekend Ireland was playing Scotland in the Six Nations. So there were lots of fit men wearing kilts in Dublin. Shiny :)

Alabama 3 (or A3, to you people driving on the wrong side of the road) - Country Acid House Gospel

Area 54 - Metal. Really good. Bangtastic drumming and bass is awesome, and the twin lead guitars are totally shattering.

Robert Gordon

John Cale. It was he who sang Hallelujah on the soundtrack (not the CD) of Shrek, and although it's been sung by everyone and their dog, his incredibly sparse version is the best, and most overlooked. I don't like the Jeff Buckley wesion everyone raves about. It just bothers me.

Roxy Music - Rowdy early stuff. Not the bland later pap.

Eno - again early loud stuff. Get 801 Live. Bill McCormack's bass even (and this is not meant to detract) exceeds Laura's work in Area 54.

Rufus Wainwright, I'd literally kill to see a recording of a gig he did in Sydney. Chris Spedding was playing the guitar. Can't get better than that.

Roy Harper - HQ. More rocky than his usual folky stuff, which is every bit as good. The Band list is slightly awe-inspiring, with the likes of John Paul Jones, Bill Bruford, Dave Gilmour.

"...Dave couldn't nail down The Game's frenzied final section. After two or three shots, Gilmour gave up" Harper says, "...Spedding arrived in a white suit, a red carnation in his lapel, shades and carrying a tiny amp. So we played the tape, he says, 'Okay, play it again.' I started to laugh halfway through, because he completely understood the spirit, the whole thing. Within 20 minutes, he was packing up and walking out again..."

Northern Soul.

Benny Goodman.

The Black Dyke Mills Band.

The Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra doing anything whatsoever.

Anything else really. Probably easier if I say what I don't like. Doodly self-absorbed jazz. Anything dull, gloomy or otherwise not fun.

Modern R'n'B. Nyyaheeeahya-ya-ya-hooo-yeaahhh. Good grief. I know the effect you're aiming for, but go and listen to Otis Redding again and sort yourselves out.

Dance music. I don't get that at all. Noisy repetitive crap. I refer m'learned friends to A3 at the top. They do Dance Music, and it is absolutely wondrous.

Girl Bands. Usually terrible. Boy Bands. Not the sort of work a bloke should be doing, especially if the choreography is more complex than the song.

Singers without any kind of distictive sound to their voices. Blondie, you knew who it was, now you can't tell them apart, except by the song itself.

1. Silverchair (My favorite. A great Aussie band. They started out as grunge but grew up and now their stuff is amazing. Best albums: 'Neon Ballroom' and 'Diorama')

2. Stabbing Westward (Now broken up. A great industrial rock/metal band. Like Nine Inch Nails but heavier. Best albums: 'Wither Blister Burn & Peel' and 'Darkest Days' <- my favorite of theirs)

3. Nine Inch Nails (Releases an album only every 5 years but ends up being worth the wait. Best albums: 'The Fragile' and 'With Teeth'.

4. System of a Down (Need I say more?)

5. AFI (A great goth/rock/punk band. Their earlier stuff is too punky but their album 'Sing the Sorrow' is a masterpiece. My Chemical Romance is just copying them.)

6. Evanescence (Some great songs. They don't perform well live. Amy Lee is gorgeous.)

I also like a lot of 80's stuff but there's so many good bands and songs that I can't pick a favorite. For the most part I hate today's music. Most everything lacks originality.

Led Zeppelin, hands down. No one matched Page on guitar -- no one.

And, it was the Beatles who got me into contemporary music (I played bass in a band in the late 70's/early 80's, and now play at church -- as well as an occasional party with my old rock jamming friends). No one wrote songs like Lennon & McCartney.

I also thoroughly enjoyed The Who, The Yardbirds, and (the very early) Rolling Stones.

But as far as rock goes, no one can stand on the same stage with Led Zeppelin (at least from 1968 through the mid-1970's). (When I saw Page on TV in the early 80's playing at some benefit concert, he was horrible. But in his prime, no one could touch him -- even Hendrix.)(And as a bassist, I can't ignore John Paul Jones, either. Any group with a single guitar player has to have a killer bassist, and Jones was certainly one of those.)

I've been a Genesis fan since about 1984 when I got into music. What appealed were the long epic tracks that were journeys in music, typical of prog-rock. Unless the track was longer than 5 minutes it didn't count! I'm just miffed that I never got to see a live gig!

Only one band earns the title of THE Band, and that, of course is, The Band. Levon Helms and Robbie Robertson. What else needs to be said.

Beyond that, I've always been partial to Procol Harum. The classical influence in Repent Walpurgis is outstanding with Gary Brooker on piano and Matthew Fisher on organ.

I saw Procol Harum live in Toronto in '68, I believe, and it was the most amazing concert I'd ever seen. It was outdoors, Beggars Banquet, and the audience was totally silent for their entire set. After the first number Brooker looked up, heard nothing, shrugged and continued the concert. At the end of the set they were half way off the stage when the audience erupted. Their music was that entrancing. You felt it to your core. They then went into their encores, and the concert had to be eventually called because it was now about 2:00 am on a Sunday morning in a fairly residential area.

Even Douglas Adams (HHGttG) played in concert with them once.

i'm 18 but i'm way into classic rock from the 60s and 70s. the only modern bands i like are weezer, nirvana, and system of a down. flywithmecaptain and cartoon rock. hells yes led zeppelin is by far the best rock and roll band of all time. everyone in the band showcased their talents, even John Bonham on drums with those BADASS drum solos on Moby Dick. man what an awesome band. everyone says the beatles are the best band ever, but zeppelin is better. way better.

The Beatles wrote more great songs than anyone, and their vocals were second to none. Also, if not for the Beatles, there probably wouldn't have been any of the rock bands which followed -- including Led Zeppelin.

That being said, the Beatles could not match (or come close to) Led Zeppelin in instrumentation or stage presence.

While I believe that the Beatles were the greatest overall, Led Zeppelin is still my overall favorite. Page was incredible, and Jones was no slouch at his instrument either. Awesome band. (I had tickets to see them in Philadelphia in 1980. Unfortunately, Bonham died and the tour was canceled.

My cousin got to see them at the Garden in the early 70's though.)

Every once in a while I love to get the Led out! *smackin high five*

That being said, they aren't my favorite. That would be U2, the world's greatest band. I have hours and hours of U2 music, much of it legally obtained, much of it, ahem, obtained by love. They're the tops. Also love Coldplay.

My other two faves are a bit under the radar:
King's X- a power trio from Houston. Trust me, King's X is probably your favorite band's favorite band. I know that's true for Pearl Jam. If you're interested in progressive rock you should check out their albums Gretchen Goes to Nebraska and Dogman. Feel free to write for more suggestions.

Stavesacre- been with them since day one. If you ever have extra cash to spend on a CD, please buy Speakeasy. Probably their best effort to date.

For the record, any accent from the Isles is sexy. There's an Irish girl who reads essays and whatnot on the Firefly Talk Podcast. I could listen to her all day. drooooolll.....

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. I love the songs except Free Falling which, for me, is his only song that didn't hold up to repeated airings.
My favorite album is "Damn the Torpedoes." He's wonderful to see live (when he and the HB's backed Bob Dlyan, more people in the audience enjoyed their set than Dylan's...and most were there to see Dylan!) and has always kept his fans in mind, especially those who were not exactly flush with money. For you young'uns, he actually took his record label (MCA) to court to stop them from raising the price of his next album by $3.00, and won! (This was back in like, 1980 or 1981...the album was "Hard Promises.")
He does always seem to be at his best when something got up his nose. The last cd, "The last DJ," is superb, and it is mainly ripping up at the music industry (labels and radio) for homogenizing the industry to the point where anyone who truly has a new and innovative sound, style, what have you, can't get anywhere and if they do get it made on a small label, none of the radio stations will play it because the Big Boys are dictating what gets run and what doesn't. This cd makes me think of us browncoats...a lot.
And...as another favorite...The Traveling Wilburys, who have a little bit of it all...Tom Petty, Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Roy Orbison and Jeff Lynne. Definitely, quite the line-up and a couple wonderful cds. Catch 'em if ya can.

I have to say TOOL, but then there are so many other great bands... such as SOAD, APC, MUSE, Mogwai, Butterfly Effect, Dave Weckl Band, Weather Report, Gong, and the list goes on... but one can not go past the vocal talent of Maynard, or the chops of Carey... all in all they are the best band, alhough a bit out there for some tastes (any one for psychadelic math alternative?)

My favorite band (well, bands, since I can't have just one)?

My hands-down favorite is Soundgarden. BadMotorFinger and SuperUnknown are two of the greatest hard rock albums ever made.

Then there's Faith No More. Mike Patton is a genius singer, and the VERY eclectic albums the band has put out are a testement to the fact that this band could do anything. Some songs to consider: "From Out of Nowhere", "The Perfect Crime", and "The Gentle Art of Making Enemies".

And the bronze medal goes to the Foo Fighters. Dave Grohl is a much better musician than Kurt Cobain ever was, and in this band, it shows.

I think I'd have to go with Led Zeppelin as my favorite band. However, my favorite band that is still touring/recording would have to be U2 hands down (as if my sig didn't tell you that). I find I like U2 more and more, especially now that I'm really getting into the Zooropa/Pop era U2 (I never really enjoyed it that much before).

Sister Hazel (other favorite is the Beatles)

Why is Sister Hazel cool?
their song "Firefly" is a good reason to start... :-)

Also I love their music--the first time I heard their song "Change your mind" on the radio I cried. I've found many of their songs to relate to my experience, both happy and heartbreaking and everything in between. Also they ditched their big company deal to go back to being an Indie band (how cool is that?). Lots a talent. Great music.

1) Disturbed; I think "Overburdened" is an excellent song for the Operative(post-Miranda), while "Down With the Sickness" is the most Reaver-ish song I've ever heard.

2) Seether; "Plastic Man" is a good one for River or Mal. "Diseased" is all River though.

3) System of a Down; "Soldier Side" is a great one for Mal or Zoe.

4) Fear Factory; "New Promise" is fitting for Simon.

5) Nirvana; For sheer, random funnyness, "Lithium" is Wash's song! And "Pennyroyal Tea" is definitely for Jayne.

6) Social Distortion; "I Was Wrong", "Through These Eyes", and "Crown of Thorns" are all good ones for Mal.

I'd have to say Manic Street Preachers, hands down. The Holy Bible has got to be one of the most intense albums ever made, it's just brutal.

I also love Radiohead, the Beatles, U2 (especially their early stuff, pre-Joshua Tree) and David Bowie.

LittleAlbatross - you need to hunt down and talk to a guy on this site called Jadehand (try talk story) To say he's a bit fan of Marrilion is like saying we all think Firefly is kinda ok.

Huge. Big. Grande fan of Marrillion. From what I've heard they are very cool.

My own favorite band, oh gods, pain! can't... choose... just... one... ...ok. er.... Tori Amos.

Any album whatsoever, just pick up and immerse thyself. She's incredible, every song, even the more outlandish one such as 'Proffesional Widow' is just an incredible ride. Favorites include 'Tear in your Hand' 'Sleeps with Butterflys' 'Putting the Damage On' 'Honey''Space Dog'''Talula' 'Sweet the Sting' General Joy' oh hell, now i'm just listing the songs. I like her.

If you've not heard her stuff and want to, try Little Earthquakes and Scarlets Walk or the latest one, they're the somoothest intros.

Jeeze even her remixes are good.

Others are Kate Bush, NIN, Fleetwood Mac (early stuff, pre stevie-whatsername) Elton John (seventies stuff) Smashing Pumpkins,Killers Kaiser Cheifs, Pearl Jam, Led Zep, the Who, the Monkees, Placebo, Garbage, Damian Rice, Queens of the Stonage, Foo Fighters, Roxy Music, RHCP, Dave Matthews Band, the Eels, Goldfrapp, Maximo Park,Fairport Convention, Nirvana, The divine Comedy, Bjork, Counting Crows, Soundgarden, Sneakerpimps, and so very many more.

People that need a mention, but i've only managed to hear one of two of their songs - The Shins, Frou Frou, Arcade Fire, Sunna, A (did a song called 'nothing' a while ago which I play almost everyday but never heard anything else)Jose Gonzelez (the 'Heartbeats' song from the ad with all the little coloured balls)All American Rejects, Zero7 and Nick Drake.

Funnily the only band in the world that i'm totally ambivilant to (don't hate, but could happily go the rest of my life not missing) is the Beatles. I dunno.

Overall, no one old or earth shattering but 3 doors down. Some of their music was my high school experience, and some pretty cool things happened to me while their tunes blasted over head, so them because fo their talent and sentimental value. But third eye blind saved me a few times "Hows it Gonna Be" became a weapon i used to keep my sister safe from my dad. it made him think about loss so he would stop yelling. sad huh? but such is life. On the up side everything rocks now that i don't see him any more. neither does my sister and so i love both bands because they helped me some in a figurative way, some in actual life-like ways. The universe if funny in that way. But now i have a semi-chamred life. The key hard work!!!! Have fun every one! Sorry short adn choppy sleepy work night have to up in day to pay bills!!!! Hehehe

Hey flywithme, Marillion is certainly worth a listen. Just make sure you get some of their later music. I don't at all care for their early stuff, but that's just me. Find JadeHand, he'll be able to recommend their best.

As for me, my favorite band of all time has to be Rush. Thinking person's rock and roll. And Neil Peart is one of the few Percussionists (as opposed to Drummers) working in rock today. Not to mention the lyrics he writes. I've been lucky enough to see them twice, including seeing them perform 2112 in its' entirety!

Next, I'd have to say Genesis, especially with Peter Gabriel. I saw them in late '81. Still one of my favorite concerts ever.

Even though I pogo'd to the Pistols as a lad, had hair halfway down my back and headbanged in my 20s, and have been brought near to tears by a truly sublime live performance of Haydn by the Toledo Symphony, I....... listen to synthpop.

I blame Gary Numan, who I also still listen to. Then along came Men Without Hats, who I also love. And lately, I've been listening to Freezepop. There's just something about a bouncy, frothy pop song carried by a synthesizer that makes me smile. You won't tell, will you?

nah, as long as you tell no-one about my eighties obsession, I love almost all of it, good and bad, but especially Adam and the Ants Cyndi Lauper, and The Cure, love the Cure, can't believe I left them out the first time.

But the biggest shamefull confession I have, is that I kinda like the Black Eyed Peas.

I know I know, its not like i'd ever buy their albums, not even the first one (remember when they were a protest group?) But with the exception of that humpy one, I listen to their songs when they come on the radio.

That and I prefer the covers of 'How Soon is Now' to the origional Smiths version, which to many I've spoken to is sacrelige(sp?) but hey, I can't stand theat Morrisey guy (is that the right one?) his voice just makes me want to thump him. Really hard.
