Lines that Choke You Up

There's other threads that outline the hilairty in the series, but there's a ton of emotion there. Some of these lines/scenes STILL choke me up after dozens of viewings:

From Out of Gas, at the very end when Mal is starting to doze off from the medicing, and he jerks up and says, "You guys be here when I wake up?" Chokes me up every time.

From the BDM, when Mal tells them, "You hold! Hold till I get back!" I get watery eyed and short of breath.

Last, though it's not from the film or the series, is the one that puts me over the edge. In the special features for the film, Joss's intro to the screenings, at the end when he says, "We have done the impossible, and that makes us mighty." Just writing it makes my throat tight. The idea that the little people finally won one against the big meanies that took our show away, just gets me to the core.

On a completely unrelated note, though this is about our favorite emotional lines, I am watching Our Mrs. Reynolds as I type, and I just passed the part where they find Mal and they're trying to piece together what happened. Suddenly Inara says "I only fell is all" in her slurred speech. That's hilarious. One of my new favorite funnies.

Simon's speech about River from the pilot always gets me...

I am very smart. I went to the best Medacad in Osiris, top three percent of my class, finished my internship in eight months. "Gifted" is the term. So when I tell you that my little sister makes me look like an idiot child, I want you to understand my full meaning.

River was more than gifted. She...she was a gift. Everything she did, music, math, theoretical physics --even-even dance -- there was nothing that didn't come as naturally to her as breathing does to us. She could be a real... brat about it, too. I mean, she used to --

There was a... a school... a, uh, a government-sponsored academy, we had never even heard of it but it had the most exciting program, the most challenging. We could have sent her anywhere, we had the money, but she wanted to go. She wanted to learn. She was fourteen.

I got a few letters at first, and then I didn't hear for months. Finally I got a letter that made no sense. She-she talked about things that never happened, jokes we never... it was code. It just said..."They're hurting us. Get me out."

Summers acting in this scene, along with the idea that even though she's been traumatized, and is still not "safe", she has the strength to reach out and express regret for someone elses suffering just plain old kills me.

This isn't a line, or well it sort of is. But at the end of Out of Gas when the salesman is talking to Mal and he is just staring off at Serenity not listening to a word he says always makes me remember everything i love about this show. It's my favorite episode, so maybe I'm biased. But the first time I watched it I thought Mal had been totally duped by the salesman and that he was conned into buying Serenity. But then the very last scene shatters that preconception. I love it so much.

From Firefly:

*Anything Simon has to say or speak in an endearing tone toward River.
I find him literally putting his life on the line for his sister insanely touching. Hell just thinking about it gets me started.

*"Safe"-look at first explanation.
*Jaynestown"- Book and River having a talk about religion..."River. You can't change religion. It changes you"
Mal and Jayne talk about why they still thought he was a hero after all he's done.
*"Out of Gas"- When Mal first sees Serenity. "Will you guys be here when I wake up?" part.
*"Ariel"- Jayne: "What are you going to tell them when they find out I'm gone?" Mal: "I dunno" Jayne: "Don't tell them what I did. Make somethin' up"

*If I don't brace myself..."Message"-The end of the show where it recaps Tracy's message and Mal looking at the camera.
*"Objects In Space"-River's speech about not belonging on Serenity and have to leave. Starting from Mal allowing River back on Serenity to the end of the show.

I'm not sure where this belongs but at the end of one episode, River taking Jayne's roll and he curses and gets a new one. It makes me tearful a bit every time.

Serenity:
*After Simon loosens River's restrains, he asks if she's ok.
*Serenity's intro...damn music lol
*(If I'm really into the story) Miranda's message
*Book's death scene.
*Mal's sppeech to the crew about spreading the message.
*Kaylee asking where Wash's at.
*Mr. Universe's message for Mal.
*Simon getting shot to River giving the crew Simon's bag.
*River's fight till the end of the movie.

You're right RolandReynolds, they're are a lot of really good lines and that exchange between Book and Mal is definitely a tear-jerker.

The line that pulls at my heart strings the most, with the one in my signature coming in second or third maybe, has got to be at the end of Out of Gas, when Mal asks,

"Ya'll gonna be here when I wake up?"

Doesn't it just make you so happy to see the old cap't crack and show how much he cares...makes you wanna hug some buddy....man I wish my roommate didn't smell so bad...

Jayne: "Don't tell 'em what I did. Make somthin' up." (Ariel)

Wash: "How bad? It's bad, my wife may be dying here." And then the look on Mal's face when he has to drag him away from her. Sweet jesus that man is an emoting god. (Out of Gas)

From the movie:
Book: "I'm not on your crew."
Mal: "Yes you are."

Kaylee: "Wash. Wait, where's Wash?"

Mal: "Love keeps her in the air when she oughta fall down, tells ya she's hurtin' 'fore she keens. Makes her home."

And finally, it's not really a line but, once again, Mal's expression (emoting god) when he's listening to Mr. Universe's recording. How he touches his shoulder, and it's clear that while Mal was kind of unsure of him earlier, he just dragged himself across the floor to (pretty much) save the 'verse and that makes him Mal's comrade-in-arms.

Any dialogue between the Tams always get to me, whether or not River was lucid. I'm quite partial to Simon's lines in Serenity when he got shot.

Simon: River? I'm sorry. I hate to leave.

And in the episode "Safe," after River said that Simon had found her broken, to which he replies--

Simon: Everything I have is right here.

While I feel every charchter has said something poingnant that has teared me up a bit, two of River's are coming to mind right now:

War Stories - when Simon asks River how she is doing,
"(smiles) Played with Kaylee. The sun came out, and… I walked on my feet, and… heard with my ears. (more raggedly) I ate the bits. The bits did stay down. And I work. I… function like I'm a girl. (sobbing) I hate it because I know it'll go away. The sun… goes dark, and chaos is come again. Bits… fluids! What am I?!"

*I think it's just the concept that she is trying medication and WANTS to get better so badly, but no matter what she does, everything just keeps coming back. Just gets me.
And my favorite, from the BDM:

Merciful God please take me away
Make them stop.
They're everywhere.
Every city, every...
Every house, every room,
they're all inside me.
I can hear them all,
and they're saying nothing!

Get up.
Please get up.

Two Simon moments have the biggest impact on me. The first is in 'Safe' when he embraces River when she's tied to the stake, closes his eyes and tells them to "Light it."

The second is in 'Objects in Space', when the others are arguing over River and he says, so soft and bewildered, "She's just a kid. She just wants to be a normal kid." The way the mood changes in the room is palpable.

I of course have to agree with everyone for just about every line that comes out of someone's mouth at the end of the BDM. Gauranteed tear-jerker, every time :)

I've always found that Nathan is really good when there's a catch in his throat. Moves me every time. In particular, there's the scene from the pilot where he's visiting Kaylee in the infirmary, trying to tell her he's a "mean old man." Then of course the part in "Objects" where River walks by Mal and Inara, and Mal says "None of it means a damn thing."

For a first pick, though, and it's biased 'cause I just watched "War Stories" today, but it's at the end of the ep when Mal gets up and bitch-slaps Niska. "You wanna meet the real me now?!" I like in the commentary Nathan mentions he wishes he could do that line over again, and I don't see how he could nail it any better ;p

In "Serenity" - Simon's line:
"They're hurting us. Get me out."
It totally made me cry the first time I saw it. Sean carries that whole speech off with such love and pride, and then that last line is so... I don't know how to describe it. It's powerful.

In "Out of gas" - Mal:
"You guys'll be here when I wake up?"
Definitely teary. He's been through so much, and all he cares is that his friends are there when he wakes up. Like they'd really leave him. So sweet.

In "The Message" - not actually a line, just that music that plays when they're taking Tracey's body to his parents. It's the most beautiful piece of music I know, and it makes me cry every time.

In the movie - Book's death scene:
Book: "I'm not one of your crew."
Mal: "Yes you are."
*cries* Yes, he is!!

- both times Wash says:
"I'm a leaf on the wind. Watch how I soar."
It didn't make me cry originally, but now I just think that he's gonna *choke* die saying it. It makes me tear up.

- when Simon's been shot and he's talking to River. I'm crying almost as much as Summer is; Sean is so good. This and his speech in the pilot are two of the best delivered pieces I've ever seen.

The first time Tracey did his speach in "The Message" didn't get me, and neither when Zoe finished it off, but the third time you hear it got me...I think cus it's combined with that music and the snow. Hell, even Jayne looked sad. That was probably the least funny episode.

And Simon guarding River when they're about to be burned alive! I knew they were gonna be saved, obviously, but the fact he protected her like that...

First time I watched Serenity, I hadn't seen any episode of Firefly, so Wash's death didn't mean too much to me, but when I watched it after I'd seen the series, I couldn't eat for the rest of the day...

Edit: Forgot one; The entire "Out of Gas" episode...It's my favourite episode cus I get so involved every time. Even when I know what happens, I still say: "Damnit, Mal, get up!" and shout obsenities when that guy shoots him...And Jayne's little silent goodbye almost brings tears...

I never really thought of the significance of that gesture mongoose, but you're right it is very meaningful, and Mr. Universe really was more than a hungry, angry baby.

LoL, looking at this thread maybe you should say, "Edit: Forgot the whole series and movie..." Seriously, looking at all these heart-wrenching, tear-jerking moments...how many programs spawn that kind of emotional involvement? And still manage to be believable, funny, and action-packed???

You know, there's an old saying, and I believe I have heard Joss paraphrase this; making people cry is easy. What's hard is making them laugh.

Some of Firefly/Serenity's laughing moments are just as good, just as defining to their characters as the dramatic moments.

The bit that sucked my girlfriend in, and she HATES science fiction was at the end of War Stories:

Zoe: Holding back Wash and Jayne as Mal wrestles with the interrogator on the edge of the big drop on Niska's station; "This is something the captain has to do for himself."

Mal: "No it isn't!"

Deep funny.

Ah, but you missed the real tear jerker there... There is a warmth to what she says, because it looks like she's getting better, like she's coming to terms with reality. There is a definate hope, and then... "Daddy will come and take us home." That part gets me everytime, especially looking at it from Simon's perspective.

Not exactly sad, and not exactly a line, but everyone's got the good ones already.

Rescuing Mal from Niska.

Zoe: We're gonna go get the Captain.
Kaylee: Oh. Good! ..........can they do that?

Jayne: "No" (The amount of scorn he fitted into that word.)

Then there he was, up on the gantry, tooled up and ready to bring the Word (which would be "Eat hot leaden death, suckers!",* I'm guessing) to them as needs it.

Not that anyone ever had the slightest doubt.

I suppose from Simon's perspective its a sad line because he think she is still bonkers but it shouldn't be sad at all from our point of view. Taken literally you'd think that she is still seriously disconnected from reality and holding on to a false hope of family, but as we know that she understands things very differently and is "deeply intuitive" to qoute Simon, I think its a powerful line that shows how the crew of Serenity is starting to become a family and that River sees that. "Daddy will come and take us Home" is imediately followed by Mal and showing up with the ship. The ship that Simon says in Objects in Space is becoming her home ("she loves this ship") and that Mal at the end of Serenity says is made a home by the love of the people in it for the her and each other.

So the line may be a tear jerker, but not because its sad that she doesn't get things, but because she sees the situation so much clearer than everyone else and for one of the first times in the series, the love and family of the Serenity crew is expressed.

I don't know about choking me up, but here's one that I always thought was really good.

In Serenity after Mal "rescues" Inara and they're alone in the hallway:

"You spin me about, you always have. I wish to God you were somewhere else..."
"I was."

It sort of summarizes their whole relationship from the show, and that it has caused so much trouble, but we (the audience) still believe it would be great if they could stop being silly and get together. I guess, as a guy, it's cool to see Mal share his feelings verbally like that, because he's finally admitting he has feelings for her.

Inara: You don't have to die alone!

Mal: Everyone dies alone.

Nathan doesn't say it with spite or even resignation, twovery possible ways to say the line. Instead, he just states it as a sad, simple fact, explaining this fact to Inara. So... 'awesome' is the only word I can think of.

And in "Safe"

Simon: Captain, why'd you come back for us?

Mal: You're on my crew.

Simon: Yeah, but you don't even like me. Why'd you come back?

Mal: You're on my crew. Why are we still talking about this?

For all the gray areas that Mal and the crew live in, it's a strange (but oddly obvious) thing to see that loyalty to his crew (and therefore, family) couldn't be any more black-and-white. As opposed to Simon's family, who, despite "knowing" for sure what is good and evil, will turn away from helping their own son or daughter. "Why are we still talking about this?" is what cemented Mal's character for me.

That's actually the line from the pilot (Serenity, not The Train Job) that caught my ear and had me hooked.

Reading everyone's choices has left me in a quandry as to which episode I'll watch next...I love everyone's choices and reading them brings back all the emotion of the episode/scene...

Wow, you have all listed the ones I love also. Though, not so much a line as it is a moment that just gets me is at the end of "The Message" when they are all coming off the ship to deliver Tracey's body to his family. It's snowing and everyone looks very somber. It is a beautiful scene. Joss really did a wonderful job with it.

Also, I really love where they are all working on putting the ship back together at the end of the movie. I love where Inara is painting the Serenity symbol back on.

Well, a lot of the ones that get me EVERY TIME have already been mentioned so I'll try to pick a couple that haven't been mentioned as much.

Simon in Safe: "Light it."
Oh. My. God. Can love be any more pure and dedicated than that?

And this isn't actually in the series or movie, but since someone already mentioned a line from the pre-screening preview done by Joss: The very last line where he says, "Welcome to Serenity." The look on his face was one of pure joy. I was crying before the movie even started...

The one line that comes immediately to mind when you mention 'tearjerker' is a line from Ariel:

Simon: You know what that means, right?
River: Time to go to sleep again...
Simon: No mei-mei... It's time to wake up.

Ohh man. I get sentimental just typing that out. I always loved the relationship between Simon and River. So heartwarming, yet so relateable.

River: I threw up on your bed
Simon: Yep... Definitely my sister

Hmmm I don't know about that. Certainly, from Simon's perspective it's sad as hell. Remember the flashbacks, the falling out with his dad. "I won't come for you." He's probably put it all out of his mind, given up any hope of returning home. Add to that, he's seeing his sister start to come around, and then bam! she lays down that line.

From our perspective? The metaphor you give makes perfect sense, and maybe thats what was intended, but I don't think so. I think if anything she'd be feeding off of Simon's emotions, and he'd feel pretty betrayed by the Mal and the entire crew. Only five episodes into it, I don't think we've developed her that far. Somewhere between there and when Kaylee chases her for stealing the apple.

Summers acting in this scene, along with the idea that even though she's been traumatized, and is still not "safe", she has the strength to reach out and express regret for someone elses suffering just plain old kills me.

I suppose from Simon's perspective its a sad line because he think she is still bonkers but it shouldn't be sad at all from our point of view. Taken literally you'd think that she is still seriously disconnected from reality and holding on to a false hope of family, but as we know that she understands things very differently and is "deeply intuitive" to qoute Simon, I think its a powerful line that shows how the crew of Serenity is starting to become a family and that River sees that. "Daddy will come and take us Home" is imediately followed by Mal and showing up with the ship. The ship that Simon says in Objects in Space is becoming her home ("she loves this ship") and that Mal at the end of Serenity says is made a home by the love of the people in it for the her and each other.

So the line may be a tear jerker, but not because its sad that she doesn't get things, but because she sees the situation so much clearer than everyone else and for one of the first times in the series, the love and family of the Serenity crew is expressed.

I really enjoyed reading all of the posts on this subject. It's amazing how such a short run project can have such heart breaking lines. I totally agree with all of your choices. Myself, it was not a line that choked me up but the music at the end of The Message that got to me. It was even more heart wrenching when you watch the extras and hear the composer talk about how he made it that way to say goodbye to Firefly.

I would have to say that one line that always gets me is from "Out of Gas," when Mal has decided he's going to stay with Serenity while the others escape. Inara begs him to come, saying "You don't have to die alone..." and with no dramatics and no flair, he says, in an almost empty voice, "Eveybody dies alone."

Hi, I'm new here, I was just so thrilled to see that so many peoples favorite line is my favorite line. I had watched Firefly, and really liked it, but in Out of Gas when Mal shook himself back to awareness and asked them if they were going to be there when he woke up, I choked, and started crying. That is the moment I fell in love with the crew. Just amazing.

Finally, the moment in which I knew I was hooked on Firefly was when I first watched OoG and saw Mal collapse onto the deck. Seeing him in so much pain and seeing Serenity so empty and lonely made me realize how much I had come to care about the characters.

The individual lines have been mentioned already but reading this thread I'm particularly struck by the way the Simon/River moments develop over the course of the series and movie.

Boy that is a good one. It's a real credit to Sean too, that it doesn't come off pouty. It has more of a disappointed tone, disappointed that the moment for all of them was ruined, as opposed to disappointed that his special moment was over.

Thanks everyone, now I'm sitting at my desk crying like an idiot!! (hopefully no one will come in any time soon.)

My biggest sob moment from the series is in Heart of Gold when Wash and Zoe are talking about having a baby. Zoe says "I aint so afraid of loosing something that I ain't gonna try to have it" (or something close to that). It makes me think of the child she will never have and that she must feel the same way about having Wash in her life.

I also wail like a baby at the end of Out of Gas when they pan to Serenity. Gets me every time.

I wail for the last half hour of the movie (every darn time) but definitely the whole sequence where they are repairing the ship kills me and the very end when Mal and River are talking.

I find the more I watch Firefly and the BDM, the more sentimental I get about it. I'm sure you all understand.

yes i completely understand, im so thankful for this thread. i love the funny lines i really do, but the lines that get you , that make you well up.

the entire last half an hour of the film like you said is just so emotional, i havent watched it yet without tears, the music that starts at the funeral scene and carries right on til mal and river are talking is just so beautiful

I love all of the tear jerkers mentioned. What a series.

Actually, if you consider angst, I like the Inara bits in "Our Mrs. Reynolds", when she's so bent out of shape about Mal being "married". She snaps at him, more severely than normal. It's one of the few times she loses her cool, especially when Mal asks if she can picture him with a bunch of kids.

Later, as was already mentioned, when Inara tries to hide the fact that she kissed Mal when he was unconcious, that was priceless.

Also, at the end of that episode, when Joss teases us with Mal approaching Inara, and telling her not to kid around. She's completely defenseless at that point, and you just *know* some truth is about to be spoken about their feelings for each other. Then Mal is a typical guy, and says "I knew you kissed her!". Idiot! I loved it!

Not sure whether it was mentioned before in this particular thread, but there's one in HoG that got me -- more the first time I saw it than on subsequent viewings, because it was so totally unexpected.

When Inara scolds Mal about not being prudish, telling him she's glad he slept with Nandi, I totally bought it, just as Mal did. So when we see her in the next scene crying her pretty little eyes out... wham. Lost it.
