Who among you watched Firefly when it originally aired?

I did, and I have to say although Fox screwed up and cancelled the show, they gave me the best 10 weeks of TV viewing I have ever had. At the time I was working 3rd shift in retail, along with my best friend. I taped the episode Ariel, and brought it into work that very night. My friend(also big into Firefly) and I watched it on our lunch hour at 3 in the morning. When it was finished, there was a short silence, I asked him if he had seen anything better, movies or otherwise throughout the entire year. He said nothing came close to the entertainment of this show. Share your fondest memory of watching Firefly. Good times.

I saw the ads and knew I would like the show. But I went head over heels in love with the show and Cpt. Reynolds when he kicked Crow into the engine. Hubby and I just about fell out of our chairs laughing.

I was in boot camp at the time /sigh. Although, after watching the complete series on DVD, I am kinda glad I didn't get to watch it on tv. It seems like the commercial breaks where at very suspensful times, and I would have wound up throwing a shoe through the TV.

It's funny, I had so many oppertuinities to, but never did.

I remember hearing the show was on, thought ti sounded cool. Then I was working 3rd shift so i always had nothing to do before work at 11:00 so I cought the end of three episodes.

Years later I saw the movie and didn't make any distinction that serenity was firefly untill my brother showed me an episode and WHAM obsession city. population: me

I watched it when it originally aired. And I didn't get to watch all of them, but the two that left a mark on me were Shindig and Ariel. I know I watched most of the ones that aired, but I vividly remember watching Shindig and Ariel. I had become totally obsessed with the River-Alliance subplot and I spent all my time thinking about where it was heading. God I was so excited back then to find out what would happen to River and Simon!!!!!! Oh man I was truly heartbroken when they cancelled it.

Funny you should say that. I watched every episode of Firefly as they aired on Fox, but there was one episode that I missed a bit of because of technical difficulties. It was Shindig. Mal got into that swordfight and was put to the ground with a sword waving in front of him. Then a commerical break for added suspense. Then the screen goes black. I'm sitting there, waiting for it to come back. When it finally does come back, Mal is standing as the victor with the other guy on the ground. Doh! I had completely missed how that fight turned around and ended. I was just like, "AAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!" But there was one thing I told myself to make me feel better: "I'll just catch it in a repeat." Soon I would learn that I wouldn't catch it in a repeat....or any new episode at all.

Thank God for the DVD set. I finally got to see what happened.

I did! I was almost turned off by all those promotional ads showing this naked girl in a box--I couldn't figure out why I would want to see that. However, I knew it was from Joss Whedon and it was sci-fi, so I decided to give it a try anyway. (Usually I watch the pilot of almost any new show anyway, just in case it turns out to be another "Northern Exposure" or "The X-Files." I don't remember the ads for those before they aired, but I can't imagine that they did justice to the shows.)

I'm so glad I gave it a try! I loved the show from the first episode I saw (The Train Job): great action, great effects, fantastic characters. I couldn't believe it when they cancelled the show. There is no justice in this world.

I was there for the first episode, and it was definately my new favorite show. I was crushed and when it got cancelled. After a while I forgot about the show, until Sci-Fi began showing reruns to advertise for the movie, and I got all excited again, like a 5 year old at Christmas. Now I am more hooked on it than I was when it was actually on TV.

I had to frequently sit up late to wait until after the game was over to get 'Firefly' taped...
but it was always worth it.
After 'Jaynestown' I was blown away by the metaphor & humor & excitement of this great show...
I went to water aerobics to tell my friends about it and I was really happy to hear that they were all watching it too
(they would miss episodes that were on too late, but I would let them watch my video tape)

It is so sad that we only got a half season

Oooooo, oooooo, me, me I was in from Day 1. They had me from minute 1 but I was really hooked with the Chain of Command line. I fell on the floor laughing so hard I missed the rest of where Jayne "goes crazy". My little VCR was doing its duty taping, so I had almost commercial free Firefly.

Sigh...

I had the Region 1 Firefly box on my shelf for MONTHS. A friend of mine lent it to me and said, "Watch this, it's cool.".
I just sort of didn't.
(In retrospective, I don't know how my friend could watch Friefly and just go "It's cool.". Even has Serenity on his shelf and hasn't watched it yet. Strange.)
So the Firefly box collected dust on my shelf (don't worry, my friend's cool with that, but I think that's not why you're cringing), and I saw some trailers for Serenity on TV. I sort of didn't care. Wasn't in the mood for Joss. Blasphemy, I know.
Then another friend of mine comes back from his holidays in Thailand and gives me a Serenity DVD as a present. For some reason DVDs seem to be really cheap in Thailand.
And I go, "Oh, well, don't really wanna watch the series, I'll check out the movie.". (Which is so not typical for me, but as you might have noticed by now, my story is a strange one.).
So I started watching the movie and I was hooked from the start (and immediately fell in love with Summer. ). It took me 20 minutes to FORCE myself to stop watching, and slam in the first FIREFLY DVD, because after just those 20 minutes I was so f*cking hooked like you wouldn't believe.
Well, maybe you would.
Sorry for swearing, btw, but there is just no other way to put my sensation into words. I've been a fan of a great many series, but never did I fall in LOVE with one. I got tears in my eyes as I write this, which should say it all.
Then (after watching EVERYTHING in order, yay!) I checked out all the extras, all the commentaries, and watched everything over and over again, to the point where I felt uneasy when I had neither FIREFLY nor SERENITY at home with me. I'm a Firefly addict, and I never want to be cured.

I very quickly found my way here.

...and found out I had missed all the fun. Then I found out I had only missed half of it.

I am absolutely fascinated (in the truest sense) by the on- and especially off-screen relationship between our BDHs, and the fans, and the BDMs AND the fans! I don't know why, but it fills me with a sort of joy to have found something beautiful that is truely the product of a love shared and sherished by everyone involved (well, except the ones responsible for it's cancellation). I've seen similar "phenomena" before, but never like this.

I got very sentimental there, but I guess y'all will find it in your hearts to forgive me.

My memories are bittersweet.

Saw "Train Job" and loved it. Saw "Bushwhacked" and loved it more.

But what I remember more is tuning in for subsequent appointments with Mal and Co. and finding... ball games. Reruns of stupid movies. I remember thinking, "They couldn't have canceled it, not yet!"

When it didn't show up for two or three weeks in a row, I figured it was gone for good, and sort of gave up on it. Then, after I missed a couple, I stumbled on it again... "Ariel" this time. Woohoo!

Except, then it was gone again, and finally I found out it really was canceled.

I'm rather ashamed to say I didn't find the online Firefly community until much later, so I didn't do much to hold the line when it counted most. Only after the DVD set came out did I begin making converts.

Oh, what I'd give to be able to make those weekly Firefly appointments again!

I did, but only after seeing Serenity and buying the DVD set is when I truley became a Browncoat. The few moments which I remember from first watching the show were when Mal pushes the assasin dude into the turbine, and when River says "We're going to freeze to death first." Oh and also most of Mal's and Wash's awesome lines.

I watched it the first day it was on FOX and fell in love with it from the moment I saw the belly dancer! then I saw our crew, and I was sold on watching it for the other nine weeks, They were the best ten weeks of my LIFE!

I watched it from start to the hide-and-seek end. I knew it was coming, months before it aired as I was a Buffy and Angel fan. And then there were all the nice articles in the SF magazines (Starlog, Starburst, et al.) I fell in love with it when Simon drugged Jayne, and when Mal punted the flunky into the engine. I had a wonderful time watching it and bibbling online with some friends right afterword.
*sigh*
Nothin' on worth that now. Dumb FOX. Maybe we should pitch in and get a steel clue stick to whap them with. Or better yet, send them their very own Reavers.

I watched it and I thought it was okay the first few episodes but it wasn't until Out of Gas that I really fell in love with Firefly. I think if FOX had allowed it to continue for perhaps another year then I think it would still be on TV today. But they give very few shows that chance.

I've been there since "Train Job" aired. I downloaded the bootleg pilot that week and totally fell in love. I should be clear this makes me far cooler and of much more rarified taste and discretion than the rest of you latecomers. That's just the way it is.

Seriously though, I can't really express how heartbreaking it was for all of us here on the sight as we watched everything fall apart. It was really unbelievable to see. the disillusionment was profound. How could something so goddamned moving and soulful be tossed aside like just another failed sitcom??? Firefly was the first television show I'd liked in ten years and the last one I will ever watch. If this is the way the entertainment industry treats dramatic perfection, then I have no interest in the entertainment industry. Fuck them, fuck them all to hell.

Unfortunately, I was living overseas when it came out. I remember seeing a picture of the cast and recognizing only Adam Baldwin (which would have ensured that I'd watch it), but I remember thinking what a strange name for a sci-fi show. Anyway, I remember it getting a good write up. Unhappily the only overseas television I saw in English were 2 year old Oprah shows, Due South (which I loved) and Falcon Crest (yes, can you believe it?) reruns.

When my family and I moved back to the US, the DVD had just come out and my brother suggested that I get it from Netflix. After watching the pilot, I couldn't get the disks fast enough. My breath would hitch every time the music started.

I like to think, that if I'd been around, I would have been part of that first wave. As it is, I'll enjoy all your stories of discovery...just glad to have finally made it!

I watched it when it came out but don't know how many episodes I actually saw. Some I remember some I don't and parts of others I do. Probably because it kept changing I missed it more than got to see it. But I was in love the first night and upset when it disappeared. If I had found this place back then I would have been one of those trying to save it. But at the same time I had just got engaged and was planning a wedding so that took a ton of my time. Happy to be here now and that it's still got such a following.

And that Serenity day is coming.

Right here. Had never seen an ep of BUFFY or ANGEL and was wondering why so many people revere Joss like he's God on Earth (which I now realize is an oxymoron considering Joss is an atheist). I grew up with farmervision, so I never had access to the WB. So when I heard that he had a show on one of the networks I actually got, I tuned in to see what was the big deal. And I have to admit that when the Blue Handed men were intorduced, I was sold.

So I watched it, but when it went off the air I didn't think too much of it at the time. I was really into the superb season, or "Day" 2 of 24, plus BOOMTOWN was another groundbreaking show that was on at the same time that I was getting into. So I just chalked it up as another "unjustly screwed over show". But when I heard in 04 that they were actually making SERENITY, I re-watched it and fell in love with it all over again.

So for me it was never "How did you get introduced to it." It was more like "How did it get re-introduced to you."

A little off topic here, does anyone here remember BOOMTOWN? I thought it was such a great antidote to the regular cop show with it's really complex characters and the multiple P.O.V's. And I think David McNorris could give Mal a run for his money in the "tortured character" department.

"Damn, I missed the 2hr premiere...must of been on last Sunday...". Only after I poked around online did I learn how messed up F*X was treating the show.

I had the same experience in that the promos Fox aired for Firefly never sold me on the show. Well, the naked girl in the box thing got me to at least check it out, but let's just say that I so fell in love with Firefly from the first episode, I didn't realize that there was no naked girl in a box. Not until Fox aired the pilot anyway. LOL

In 2002 I was flipping through channels and I saw about 3 minutes of "Out of Gas" but it was in the middle of an episode so I really didn't understand what I was seeing and changed.

It wasn't until the movie came out (and I then bought the DVD because seeing the film made me interested in seeing to source matiral) that I ever saw another episode of the show again

I had a weird experience while watching Firefly on FOX... one night it starred Adam Sandler and he was playing golf...

seriously, the promos for the show had me so confused... they trivialized the show's plot to the point of mockery... "A space ship, a cosmic hooker and a girl in a box!" ... I recorded the first episode... not knowing that it was the second episode... I didn't want to watch it... the previews were so bad and the "oh no, what are we going to do? who's flying this thing?" was in every promo to the point that I was getting sick of it... so I had the tape for about a week... the next Friday, while the next episode was being taped... my friend asked me if I'd seen the first episode and I explained that I can't bring myself to watch it... I know it's Joss Whedon but the promos look so cheesy... he said "no, the real first episode" ... he had downloaded Serenity from the internet and the quality was bad but I was so engrossed... I came home and eagerly watched the first two episodes from my tapes...

so, just to be clear:
on September 27th...
I watched Serenity that my friend had downloaded
On September 28th...
I watched The Train Job and Bushwhacked that I had time-recorded...

I watched from Bushwacked on. I saw the ads, visted the offical site with Kelly doing interviews and such and had to work the night of Train Job.

Was hooked from the moment I realized there was no sound in space. That was what grabbed me. I liked the song, too.

Then FOX (Spit!) stuck it to me every chance it got. Put episodes here and there, trying to fit new shows around baseball, what the hell were they thinking?

I got wind of cancellation and freaked the hell out. They didnt even give it a chance! And was really upset when they started airing "Who wants to marry a midget Millionaire?" that millions of folks wanted to watch that go se instead of quality stuff.

Originality doesn't have to mean shocking. You can have origianl material that isn't intended to abhor. Its just that the shocking crap gets the attention. Where the hell do they go from here? Live sex shows featuring mutilated monkeys?

Being a Buffy fan, I was there for Firefly from the beginning. Shindig was the episode that definitely hooked me.

But mostly I remember seeing the episode "Serenity" and thinking, "Well, it's obvious who the mole is--he's the guy who's not on all the other episodes!"

My husband and I were there for "Train Job"

Rob had seen an add first and brought it to my attention. T.V. isn't a big thing for him and I was taken back by how excited he was. He depends on me to find it and remember when it is on. I, like many here, was hooked when Crow was kicked into the intake. One of the first things we thought, was that we somehow missed the pilot. Since it was my job to keep track, this was, of course, my fault. (kidding)

I'm so glad I found this community.
I just don't know how I would be getting through the lack of shiny goodness without the news and discussions here.

I was there from day one. Fox's mishandling of the show left me confused at times, but I loved the show when it aired & I would not even move from in front of the tv from 7:30 until after the show went off. I knew it was something special.

I watched a couple when it was on air. I love the blip ad for it. It was all prettya nd blue. Granted it didn't fit the lineup, it was hella cool none the less. I'm shocked nobody screencapped it for everybody's enjoyment.

Well my wife got me into Firefly, always been an avid fan of most sci-fi, liked Buffy and Angel ( prefered Angel to be honest). Came home from work one Monday evening sat eating my tea and the lovely lady says theres a new programme on tonight about 9 on Sci-Fi I think you will ilke it.

I hadn't heard of it myself, anyway we sat down to watch, I couldn't understand why she wanted to watch to be honest or why I had been told it was on, then I saw Jayne and realised. Trouble is, it's the first Sci-Fi show that she has ever liked (not just for Jayne) and the buggers cancel it. I wasn't popular when I had to mention it was cancelled.

It was first aired in the UK on a Monday evening if anyone is wondering why a Monday and not a Friday is mentioned above. Also it was after the show appeared in the US by a good couple of months so technically I was there in the begining (Uk time)more by luck than judgement, but I believe they did show it on the correct order.

The only thing I find completely strange is the fact that the show has such a good following and the muppets (fool's) at the studio who canned it originally can't admit they were wrong and just bring it back to life.

PS Chuffed to bits today tho, the double disk edition of Serenity from Auz has arrived got new stuff to watch

I watched it here in the UK when it origianlly aired, bringing with it two UK exclusive episodes never before seen in its native country.

I watched because;
1. It was a whedon brainchild
2. It was a space opera/comedy/drama/action rolled into one, and i like.
3. It was cancelled for being good.
4. When i used to post on Trekbbs.com, every one was raving about it and how it got cancelled early.

Now im glad i watched it, cos its come back as a movie that shouldnt exist, and thats summit special.

I am glad I didn't see them until the BDM. I would have been mourning a lot longer!

I was there from day 1. I thought the promos were funny, but I admit, I was confused by them. Probably why I decided to give the show a chance. I was not/am not a fan of Buffy and Angel (Just not my cup of tea) so I had no idea about Joss Whedon or anything. I was coming in cold.

I saw the "first" episode and was instantly confused. I kept waiting for the stuff I'd seen in the ads, but they never appeared! I had no idea about the fact that things were shown out of order until after the show was off the air!

It was when they showed Serenity at the end that, somehow, I found out that the show was on the chopping block and signed up on the offical board and then found this site and joined up -- glad to find others who were just as upset as I was about the cancellation.

It's been a bittersweet ride. Cancellation, then the Movie. Now it's all about seeing how this story continues. I have a feeling it will in SOME form. I don't think Joss is done with it yet.

Been a fan since the beginning. My husband had to drag me kicking and screaming to watch the first episode. I didn't know Joss Whedon from George Lucas, and the ads were AWFUL.

I was interested enough to watch the whole thing, only getting up during the commercials. (I can wander in and out during Stargate and don't feel as if I have missed anything.) We decided it was good enough to watch more of. I was actually angry when it was preempted for baseball and stupid movies, which is weird because I can usually take or leave TV shows, even the ones I really like.

By "Jaynestown" I was no longer getting up during the commericals because I was afraid I'd miss something. "Out of Gas" aired and I was in love. We don't have cable, but if the show had moved to a cable channel I would have signed up right then and there. By "War Stories" I was no longer blinking much, lest I miss something. By "Objects in Space" I found myself holding my breath. I was in tears at the end of the pilot/finale.

I only caught one episode of Firefly when it was aired. (I work 3rd shift and always have trouble remembering to tape my shows.) I remember being fairly excited about it, thinking Whedon would have an interesting take on the genre. Caught "Bushwhacked," and knew I was missing out on at least an episode or two. Still, I remember thinking Kaylee was rather cute, and planned on catching up with the series during the off-season repeats (which I was horribly, horribly wrong in assuming was going to happen :)

Didn't turn Browncoat until I saw Serenity, though. I'd half forgot about the show by then, and lived through Fox cancelling a bunch more of my favorite shows :(

First time through the BDM though, and I knew I was hooked. Bought both DVD sets pretty much the very next day, and haven't been able to get it out of my head since :)

I watched an episode on tv, but can't for the life of me tell you which one... my schedule didn't permit regular viewing until the show was already off.

When I heard about the BDM, I was stunned... could this be the same little show that I saw and liked that one time?

Then I found you guys and knew I was not alone. I told my husband about this all and he was skeptical. But... he's now a proud Browncoat!!!

It was shown on Sci Fi channel UK, available on some freeview packs and Satelite, so you may have missed it if you have terestrial.

As the guys at Sci Fi are fanboys like us, they were raving about and a full evening screening the first two episodes, Serenity (As one whole chunk as it were a TV movie) and The Train Job. 3 1/2 hours of the thing. It was good, i loved it from the start. and i set a programme reminders, calendar dates etc to catch each one.

It was a helluva night with interviews and behind scenes stuff intertwined.

And when you get to love the characters over the 13 episodes and features on discs, and joss plucks up the courage for the "Im a leaf on the wind... Watch how i so...

" scene.

Sorry you missed it.

I had decided to watch it based on the write-ups for the new fall season. We got back a little late that night so I missed the first ten minutes or so of The Train Job. I felt like I had miss a helluva lot more than ten minutes! (Imagine that.) I, too figured that I had messed up and missed the pilot.

Anyway, Crow goes through the engine and I knew this show was going to be different, and I was going to be watching. I tracked down every episode when it aired - taped a couple of baseball games in there, but always managed to find the show when it finally aired.

I was very confused when I watched the "Special Two-Hour Firefly Event", and couldn't figure out why they didn't show that first, muchless why they showed it last.

I complained to everyone I knew about them cancelling my show. I loved it like I had loved no other. But it didn't occur to me to come online and do anything about it.

I found out about the upcoming DVD release from a TV Guide blurb. I was elated. I remember lying in bed the night before we were going to pick the DVDs up, recounting all of the episodes in my head. I'm kind of surprised by how well I could recount them, having only seen most of them once.

I have to admit, when I first put in the DVD, I was startled by the menu screen music. I was expecting something much more along the lines of the closing credits music, and for a moment I thought I had the wrong show.

I sadly wasnt part of the firefly scene when it first aired. i still watched that 70's show on 43. I surely wish i had been on board on the pilot episode for the show. I started watching it when it came on the scifi channel awhile back before the movie came out.

I absolutely watched it when it aired. Everyone would come over to my house (the meeting place when we went out for drinks and pool) and I refused to leave or let anyone talk until the show was over.

I kept trying to convince others to watch it, but I think Fox showing it out of order made it difficult for people to get into it.

I must say too, I think the Universal Marketing Department should all be beheaded or castrated or something for how poorly they advertised Serenity. You can't just rely on the fan base, you have to get other people in the theaters too.

I did. I remember falling in love with the theme song the first time I heard it. I remember frantically getting my chores and homework done (I was still in high school) so that my world would come to a screeching halt for the next hour. And I remember my abject horror several weeks in a row where I would tune in to watch, and I would be greeted with a baseball game. *Sigh* You know, Back In The Day.

I transferred my old Firefly tapes to dvd about a month ago, but not the complete episodes. I just copied the Fox Friday promos, the Book/Mal narration intros, the previews for the next episode at the end of the show, and the little promo that played about halfway through each episode. It's good to have all the little knick knacks that go along with Firefly. So now when I get real sentimental, I can pretend it's 2002 all over again.

By the way, does anyone remember when Fox played Serenity last? The show was officialy cancelled at that point, but the week before they aired Serenity they plugged the hell out of it. all ten weeks, no plugs, it gets cancelled, and Every other commercial on Fox was about "the 2 hour Firefly event". Was Fox just spitting in our faces or is their logic just reversed?

I can't beleve I'm still mad at Fox after all these years. I want a season 2 Dammit!

Yup. I remember. I remember watching every episode and being in awe the entire time. And than I remember coming up on the last few weeks of the show. All the cries of the fans. All the sweat that went into trying to save the show. I will never forget it. But I'm happy that I got to see it when it was born. I loved every minute of it.

Flipping through the channels and stopped on Mal and the crew heading out of Serenity in the pilot.

Literally thinking "what is this crap" after the ninja dudes and others. I knew nothing of Firefly coming out or that Joss had anything to do with it.

When the meeting with Badger happened I was hooked. ...and after it was over I remember thinking this is how Sci-fi should be. Then I got all excited about it, only to find out it was not coming back. I thought it was a mini-series or something.

Forgot about it over the years until the movie hype. Then found this site around the movie DVD release.

I was there for "Train Job", recording Firefly and John Doe every Friday night (that they were on! Stupid baseball!!)

But on week, my son wanted to take me out for my birthday (him being 9 meant McDonalds, but I can handle that). I set the VCR and went out for a night on the town. Came home, rewound the tape, and realized that I had set the VCR wrong! It didn't tape. And suddenly, I was dizzy and could barely breathe. That's the moment I realized how much I loved the show. I calmed myself down, and told myself I'd have to look out for that episode on re-runs. Then, again suddenly, I was fighting back tears. Because I KNEW, down in my bones, that there would be no re-runs.

I watched those tapes through all the episodes at least once a month.

But I never did see "Ariel" until the DVDs came out.

Okay, so I watched it from the beginning (had never heard of Joss Whedon, I know, I know, don't kill me; and I thought the name was a weird choice for a sci-fi show, but the commercials looked good, so...). First episode, like others I thought I'd somehow missed the pilot. Watched every episode aired, then it was gone. I didn't think much more about it except that it was too bad.

Then, about a year ago, I was thinking how so many shows were coming out on DVD and I wondered if there was any chance that little show I used to like would be out. I figured there was no way (I mean a cancelled show!). I had no idea of the internet presence of the fan base. I just randomly did an internet search. First site was Amazon with the DVD (I ordered it immediately). Then another site said something about a movie, but it was dated '04, so I thought there's no way. They don't make movies about cancelled tv shows. Another site confirmed it and I found this community and others. I couldn't believe it. I've since been through the addiction stage to the obsessed stage and here we are today.

Whew! Sorry that was so long, guess I've been wanting to share that for a while.

I caught half of an episode of "Our Mrs Reynolds" when it first aired. Since I didn't see the whole episode, I didn't get it.

Over that time, I kept seeing glowing mentions of it at various computer gaming discussion forums... so in preparation for the movie, I started watching it fridays on Scifi. It took a few episodes but then I got hooked.

I'm going to say I did, even though it didn't air here in Tasmania until early-2005.

I was a huge Buffy and Angel fan, and it was through lurking on those fansites that I'd heard of the show. There was no promotion for it here. It just started airing one Tuesday night at about 12:30pm. It just so happened that I spotted the name in the TV Guide and recognized it. I taped them all. They showed every episode, too, and almost in the correct order - starting with The Train Job and then Serenity 1 & 2.

It was only when promotion started for the BDM that I purchased the DVDs and fell into full-blown Browncoathood.
