So, what is your favourite historical or war film?

Movies/programs to consider:

Movie: probably Gladiator
TV Show: Battlefields, I believe that it used to be on PBS but I've seen it on Military Channel as well.

The Great Escape (overly Hollywoodized but still good)
Playing for Time
Danger: UXB
30 Seconds Over Tokyo
Midway (would be a lot higher on the list if it didn't have the silly romantic sub plot about Chuck Heston's son)

I'm certainly forgetting many good ones...

Gladiator, definitely. I love that stuff. I love that era in history. Wish I was there.

Also Saving Private Ryan. I can't see this one enough.

My fave war show is 'Band of Brothers'. My fave war movie is 'The Longest Day (B&W version)'. Private Ryan and Black Hawk are a close 2nd.

I'm not sure if I'd call some of those movies "films"... Gladiator? really? Man, I thought that was awful. Braveheart was much better, in my opinion. Patton was good too. Apacolypse Now. yeah.

I love Gladiator, and I'd call it a film, although I don't really differentiate between film and movie anyway. I have a thing for sword'n'sandal epics like Ben Hur and Spartacus. I also love Deadwood.

I've just watched the first season on dvd and it's brilliant, very reminiscent of Firefly, some of the episodes even had David Boyd as DP. It's beautifully shot. One character even uses the word 'shiny' and my ears pricked up, so you've got to love it for that alone. The characters are brilliantly written and acted. Rome is another great historical TV Show that HBO did. I look forward to the next season when it finally gets here.

Gone with the Wind is a classic too. The Thin Red Line is another beautifully shot film, very visually memorable. Full Metal Jacket - starring a young Adam Baldwin, is a great war film too.

Thats all I can think of at the moment.

Wow, this is a pretty broad category! War AND historical movies, film AND TV. That covers a lot of ground.

Limiting this to war only, for TV I'll take:

Apocalypse Now
The Big Red One
The Bridge On The River Kwai
The Sand Pebbles
The Killing Fields

The first one is on my list of all-time best movies, period. Simply stunning. It's not a war film, but it is simply one of the best historical films I've ever seen.

Another film that shouldn't be left out:

The Battle Of Britain

You can even see a young Ian McShane in it, if you're a Deadwood fan. :) And what could be better than skies full of Spitfires and Hurricanes?

Last of the Mohicans, easily. It has been my favorite movie since I was like 7 (about 13 years ago...ack!).

I also grew up as a big fan of Gettysburg and Dances With Wolves. And I remember loving Midway...although I'm fairly certain I had no idea what was going on other than "cool planes!" I had strange taste in movies for a little girl...

I love a lot of newer movies like Gladiator, but you just can't replace the emotional attachment of growing up with a movie. Last of the Mohicans is MY movie:)

That was what I thought too, until I saw 'Rome'. After that I thought that living in that era maybe wouldn't be so much fun after all, and that watching Firefly while in my comfy chair is much better amusement than watching people killing each other in an arena. It's still a fascinating part of human history, and I really did enjoy Gladiator (although not necessarily for its historical content, which I remember thinking was very wrong in some places).

Other people can occasionally be useful, especially as minions. I want lots of minions.

There are so many good ones. Rome was my favorite show for the duration that it was on. I’m hoping they come out with a second season, though I suspect they will not, sadly.

I liked Gladiator as well, and it has some very authentic stuff in it, but I’ve never considered it a historical film. It’s purely fictional. I loved the first part of Gladiator. The beginning scenes where the Roman Legion fought the Marcomanni is very well presented, but the tactics, I wonder about.

Does Monty Python's "Holy Grail" count? If so, I liked that one.

Seriously though, lots of well done films in this genre.

I really didn't expect to like Black Hawk Down, but I was quite surprised. Saving Private Ryan--again very compelling regarding some of the horrors of war. Shindler's List--again compelling and important for people to always remember.

The Killing Fields
Good Night and Good Luck (very important history IMHO)

I like the series "American Experiences" on PBS as well.

Edit: I don't have cable, but I do live in South Dakota. Deadwood just received several feet of snow this week. A previous post mentioned liking sword and sandle movies and liking Deadwood. I couldn't help but picture no sandals in Deadwood this week, and shovels, not swords, will be in hand.

They are making a 2nd season of it, it's just that it takes a long time to shoot, understandably. They shoot it in Rome actually, or at least outside the city proper. Here's a news story about the 2nd season

Oh and I definitley count both The Holy Grail and Life of Brian as historical films, albeit satires. They're hilarious.
I forgot Lawrence of Arabia, that's a brilliant film too, one of my all-time favourites.

Ps I didnt mean to confuse Deadwood with sword'n'sandals epics, there's defintely none of those in Deadwood. I'm waiting anxiously for the 2nd season to arrive in the post.... Any day now:)

HBO also has plans on making Rome into a full blown television series (albiet only 10 to 12 episodes per season) that chronicles the rise, decline and fall of the western Roman empire.

If it goes on long enough, they plan on taking it all the way to when Odoacer overthrew the "last" Roman emperor Romulus Augustulus in A.D. 476. That is going to be sweet .

Oh yes... for the sandal set, there's the amazing "I, Claudius" series. I'd say that's my fave from that historical era.

Plus one that hasn't been mentioned. When I was a teenager PBS showed an excellent multipart documentary by the BBC on WWII called "World at War".

What made it so good was the use of many of the actual participants. One of the most earie was an interview with Hitler's secretary and her account of what happened in the bunker when he killed himself.
