I'm on the verge of selling a ton of comics, and was planning on getting Voyager seasons 4 - 7 (Which I don't remember all that well, except for the eps on the recently released 'Collectives' that I got), but the more I think about it, the more I wonder if I might like Buffy 6 & 7 (Which I haven't seen at all yet) more (Plus, it would be cheaper, I could sell the Buffy I already own and order the Chosen Collection).
Any opinions on which would be more desireable to posess?

I would recommend getting Season Six and Seven of Buffy. Although some people have complained about a drop in quality over the last two seasons of the show, that opinion is by no means universal and you can't really know where you'd stand on the debate until you watch 'em, now can you?
And no matter one's stance on the last few seasons, it has to be said that they contain some of the best "Buffy" episodes of the series. "Once More With Feeling" is really a must-see for any "Buffy" fan and is one of Joss' finest achievements. Another pair of episodes that come immediately to mind are "Conversations With Dead People" (which won a Hugo award, and also features Jonathon Woodward--Tracy--in another fantastic role) and "Chosen" (the series finale, which I feel is really the best way to end the series). There are plenty of other good episodes as well, just can't name them off the top of my head (wait, here's some more: "Tabula Rasa," "Lessons," "Selfless," "Lies My Parents Told Me").
So, I really recommend getting the next two seasons. It would be worth it even just for "Once More With Feeling" and "Chosen" alone. I don't think you'll be disappointed if go through with it.

So, forget Voyager? Are you saying that Treknobabble isn't as good as Caleb and Faith duking it out?
Are you saying the level of writing is better on the last two seasons of Buffy than the last four of Voyager??!!
...I could see that bein' the case...
Does Xander really get fat Chrisisall

As a huge fan of everything Joss Whedon (***especially*** Buffy), I would have to say with a resounding no to seasons 6 & 7. They were less than stellar, boring, and totally forgettable. Go for Angel seasons 1-3 (plus 4 & 5, but the first 3 were the best) if you don't already own them.
The only bright spots in Buffy seasons 6 & 7 are Spike and Caleb (played by Nathan Fillion). But if you were going to buy the Chosen Collection, I would say go for it, as it is the same price as 4 separate seasons, and you instead get all 7 (plus a bonus disc).

IMO, season 6 is about 50/50. So, if you don't might 50% suck...
IMO, seaons 7 has only 1 good episode. So...
I would recommend, season 6 with season 7 optional.
That being said, if you're like me and what to have the whole series, getting these two seasons is not optional.

P.S., TAPE? Oh yeah, last century stuff. I got a few in my closet, I think...
NOTIFY: Y | REPLY | REPLY WITH QUOTE | PERMALINK | TOP | HOME
Well Buffy > Voyager, but I'm not one for buying dvd sets I won't watch. I got stuck on Buffy. I've got 1, 2 & 3 but I don't like 4 and going out of order seems weird...so I just haven't bought anymore.
I'm one of those who thinks the quality dropped off during 6 & 7. I'm also one of the ones who liked season 5. Anyway there are still a few great episodes in there, but are a few great episodes enough? That's a question only you can answer.
NOTIFY: N | REPLY | REPLY WITH QUOTE | PERMALINK | TOP | HOME
I really, really like seasons 6 and 7. They are very different, even from each other, but I think they are definitely worth owning. I understand how some people might not like the changes in Buffy, especially in the 6th season, but personally I think the darkness of the 6th season made for good drama and some excellent episodes. Season 7 was also difficult with so many new characters, but I think it all paid off splendidly in the final episode. I don't think you could have asked for a better ending.
A couple great character moments from seasons 6 and 7:
Select to view spoiler:
Willow's darkness and Xander's love, the humanizing of both Anya and Spike, Andrew's transformation (and his friendship with Anya), Faith's return. Really, though, I think the best character arc would be Spike, and he's not anywhere near my favorite character!
So yes, get seasons 6 and 7! If you don't like them, you can always sell them on ebay or something....

Unfortunately, I can only say that season 7 definitely suck and season 6 is hit and miss (IMO of course).
But, it depends on how much you like Sci-Fi.
From what I hear, Joss wrote the end of Season 5 to be the end. Then F*X ordered more. So, season 6 is the last bit of the good ideas, and season 7...
Perhaps, snag season 6 and the next season of Voyager you want and make a further decision then. Or you could "try before you buy" if you know what I mean. There's also renting them as well.
Beyond that, I can't exactly say anything else. To do so would stretch my poor memory and likely result in mis-information.

Ok fine, but certainly he hasn't lived under a rock for the past 4 years? I knew practically everything that happened in the entire Buffy arc (seasons 1-7) before I watched a single episode! Also, he alludes to Caleb and Faith, so he at least already knows SOMETHING of the plot.

Anyway Chris, if I spoiled you, I'm sorry, but I didn't really say much at all, considering how much DOES happen in seasons 6 and 7. Buy them, and I hope you like them!

you need to have season 6
it has a lot of interesting & surprising developments,
but the thing you own (and rewatch many times)
is the amazing musical episode...
Joss wrote the music to fit the abilities of each of his actors,
with lyrics which really specifically tell their secrets and advance the season's arc
it is an amazing episode, and the commentary is great AND there is a 'making of' special which is wonderful....
then in another year or so I'll advise you that you should also own Season 7, just to have the whole set....
(BTW did you love S4 as much as I did?)

yeah, I think the worst of Buffy holds up to repeated viewings (I know people who think 'Beer Bad' is one of the all time worst episodes, but it definitely had some amazing moments (I like it better now than when I first saw it).
I wasn't crazy about season 5 either...because I didn't get into Glory,
but there were amazing individual episodes: The Body being one of the all time best. Did you listen to the commentary? Joss was really sharing a lot of his personal pain in that one.
I really do want you to watch Season 6 soon, and tell us what you think... I think you'll feel that it is worth the angst.

I bought The Chosen Collection to save money. I got hooked after renting the first two seasons. Also, I had to buy my own set because I couldn't stand the skips and scratches on the rentals.
I'm up to Season 4. But, I have a thing about completeness. If I don't have the whole picture, I feel like I don't have the whole vision of the writers/cast/crew.

Chris, I honestly couldn't tell you which one to buy. I know I would buy Buffy, but that is only due to the fact that i have not seen a single Voyager episode and that Star Trek has never piqued my interest.
My opinion on 6 and 7 is "changeable but intense" (quoting Anya from season 7). Sometimes I love these two seasons and other times i'm not that into them. 6 is really dark and deals with addictions and abusive relationships. 7 is lighter and deals with power- "those that have it and those that know how to use it."

OMG, are people actually comparing Voyager of all things to Buffy? What are you guys on over here? I saw the entire series of Voyager (to my retrospective embarassment) and can only say that I was stunned by how consistently mediocre it was. Only a small handful of standout episodes in the whole series, and when put up against Star Trek: The Next Generation, a complete failure.
Anyway, I'm always in a way hurt by the amount of online hate towards S6 and S7. I suppose that's why I decided to start up my own in-depth Buffy review site, so I can make a (likely feeble) attempt and showing how awesome S6 is (it's quite possibly my *favorite* season), and how decent S7 is (not the best *Buffy* season, but still incredible with a ton of stand-out episodes).
Please ignore everyone who tells you it sucks -- opinions widely vary on this issue and you HAVE to decide for yourself.

I would say Buffy S7 is comparable to Voyager in that most of the eps produce an emotional response equivalent to 'meh'. Buffy S6 on the other hand makes me want to scratch my own eyes out.
If you *must* choose between these two (and I think there are tons of other dvds you could be watching...) then probably Buffy, since you might enjoy the last two seasons as some crazy folk tend to ;)
Side note: Was the OMWF individual dvd released in the US?
NOTIFY: N | REPLY | REPLY WITH QUOTE | PERMALINK | TOP | HOME
As a fan of both I would easily recommend you own Voyager 4 - 7 but as a new Buffy fan you must own 6 and 7. Season 6 is my second favorite season. The Trio are a sci-fi geek's dream come true villans. Joss and the writers had fun using every Star Wars, Star Trek, Potter, ect.... reference they could.
I own the Chosen Collection and I love it.

In terms of TV shows, I suppose it depends what you've seen already/what you like besides Trek, Buffy and Dark Angel. Off the top of my head: Miracles, Wonderfalls, Harsh Realm, Lone Gunmen (all cancelled :( ), Millennium, The 4400, The Dead Zone, Lost, Battlestar Galactica, Sliders (early seasons), Quantum Leap, The Invisible Man (R2 only I believe).

Well, I haven't seen season six of Buffy recently, but over winter break this year I watched the entire seventh season, and every episode, except for maybe three of them, had me teary-eyed/actually crying by the end. Its seriously powerful stuff. Definately worth owning. I would chose Buffy over Voyager in a second (and I did; I own the Chosen collection, but no voyager at all -- and I fraking *heart* voyager).
If you do get voyager, tell me if they have any good special features or anything.

However, if you haven't seen Angel I'd reccommend getting that instead. Each season just gets better and better. On the whole tho, it's better watching than Buffy.

I'd personally go with Voyager. Not just because I am a Trek fan, I am also a big Buffy fan - but in my opinion season 6 of Buffy was directionless and poorly put together, and you can buy 'Once More With Feeling' as a separate DVD if you want it. I certainly felt let down by season 6 of Buffy, so much so my DVD collection stops at season 5.
But this is just my humble opinion and I know there are those that loved season 6, and they have every right to their opinion too. So I guess the only decision you have to make is what your feelings are now that you've heard from those that loved it and those that didn't.

Personally I never bonded w/Reilly, so I didn't mind when he left (it isn't like I ever expected to see Buffy HAPPY, after all...she isn't likely to be allowed to get married and have many fat babies)
And everyone finds Dawn annoying, the poor thing, that is her only purpose in life: to be a burden for Buffy....
Joss never did believe in telling the boring tales of happy people... he always has to keep Buffy just as miserable as possible.
I'll be interested in your comments on Season 6!

Well, the only full season I own is 3, and getting the Chosen collection would give me them all, so even if I don't like 6 or 7, I'll still have 2 thru 4 (my faves) in full.

It occurrs to me that the opinions on Buffy's last two seasons are about as polarized as the level of acceptance over a certain character's demise in Serenity...

One last Voyager note: When I got the Borg collection, I was thrilled to see Voyager after so long, and what great eps they included! But then I researched a little, and started to remember that most eps were not of that calibur. I feel like I may be wasting my time (and money) purchasing so many episodes, with only a small portion being good enough to be re-watched. In effect, I'd be buying close to 100 episodes, and only about thirty would ever be watched more than once...
But even Beer Bad is good enough for a second go.
At least, that's how I see it Chrisisall
Edit: Logic dictates that the need of the many Buffy eps outweighs the need of the few Voyager's.
Plus; I already own 1/3 of those thirty episodes on the Collections

LOL
you should have heard the bitterness in fandom about whether Buffy should 'be with' Angel or Spike...
A lot of Angel fans stopped watching Buffy after season 4 because they just couldn't stand it that Spike had moved to Sunnydale (even though Angel got his own show out of the deal... and it isn't like Buffy was ever going to have a happy fulfilling relationship with anyone).
You don't know...it has been too long. But the bitterness was mind boggling, there were ads in the paper, letters written to the sponsors (in addition to the exprected ones to Joss & the network).
Of course most guys wanted Buffy to be with Xander or Reilly (they were never going to get any joy... but then none of us were).
I should probably mention that this is why I'm convinced that the SECOND Mal hooks up with Inara, she is doomed to a painful horrible death.
just sayin'

Quote:Around that time, and I wasn't watching it btw, the big thing I remember is hearing Howard Stern drone on and on about how great the series was while hearing his show at work, and how cool, effed up things happened on it. Sad to say, I took this to mean it wasn't great

*gleefull with antici....pation*
Well, I sold my X-Men comics and got the dough. The Chosen Collection is in my hot little hands!
Time to complete the Sunnydale adventure....
Of note: the box is packed tight, and does not allow instant access to the disks, I guess they're intended to be spread out on a bookshelf- I may need to get thin cases (like for Firefly) to permantly store them in...I like artistic challenge
. But the glossy booklet outlining the episodes is cool.
Reviews to follow in the coming days.

I'd say so, if only to finish up the series. Also, in my opinion there where more than a few episodes in each season worth watching more often than on TV.

I'm so jealous!
I got each season as they came out in DVD...

you have a wealth of fun to last you for months!

Not exactly, Em, the disks are the same ones you get in the seperate sets, but there's one bonus disk in a (rather inexpensive-looking) cardboard sleeve that has new interviews and featurettes.
Last I saw, Buffy died. Can't wait to see the look on her face when she comes back...

Quote:Little did I know back in the early eighties that the X-Men comics I was buying would turn into seven seasons of vampire slaying, and now Joss has written for that same team in those comics, too.

Re-watched The Gift for a refresher, this time allowing the full effect to hit me; many tissues were necessary.
Bargaining 1 & 2...what can I say? It's gonna be a bumpy ride, looks like. Seein' the Buffster all corpseafied was eerie and disturbing- the whole thing was like a nightmare.
Being dead also gave her hair a reddish tinge...
And Xander must have been eating to forget.

What I found about Buffy S6 & S7 that I wasn't crazy about was that they were a bit of a letdown - but only when compared with Seasons 2 thru 4! Put S6 or 7 up against 99% of the tripe that's on the telly, and it looks pretty freaking good in comparison. If it doesn't feel quite AS good as some of the best of Buffy, it's still pretty damned special.
Reilly's leaving didn't bother me, because (like many others) he just never seemed "right" for Buffy. Probably because he wasn't all fangy and, y'know... "Grrrr". Dawn bugged me to no end, but I must say that, upon repeat viewings of all seven seasons, Dawn *does* get better. Or at least less annoying. And I learned to give her the benefit of the doubt; Joss was writing a 15-year-old girl, and they really CAN be that annoying.
Like I said, even if 6 & 7 aren't the greatest Buffy seasons, they're still a damn sight better than most other shows you'll see. And there are some episodes that are simply *amazing*. Your jaw will drop, more than once. You'll be stunned. I've watched the entire series, start to finish, twice now. There are other episodes that I'll just pop in to watch on their own, several of which are in S6 & S7 ("Once More With Feeling", "Conversations With Dead People", "Lies My Parents Told Me", and "Chosen" among them). Not EVERY episode in those seasons was great, but the best of them were as good as anything I've seen on TV, ever.
"Once More With Feeling" has to be my all-time favorite Buffy episode - and I *hate* musicals! If you were a casual observer, or had never seen the show, it would just seem silly; over-the-top kitsch, a ridiculous parody of Broadway musicals. But for us, we who have watched and followed the entire series and invested so much in these characters, it becomes something else entirely. Just seeing how much effort Joss put into crafting every line and every word in every song, so that it fit perfectly with the person singing it... it still gives me goosebumps. My reaction after watching it a second time (immediately after seeing it the first time) was, "Joss should write this damn thing for Broadway. Not this episode - the whole damn series. Condense it down to a 2.5- to 3-hour musical, and let it rip the throat out of conventional musicals." And I'm convinced that he could do it, and that it would run longer than "Cats". Put it this way: *I'D* pay to go see it. (Did I mention that I hate musicals?) ;)
And the series finale is the PERFECT way for the show to end. The only series finale I've seen that compares to it in how good it was, was the finale for Angel.
I've never really considered myself a huge fan of buying DVD sets of TV series. After discovering Buffy, I bought all 7 seasons of it, all 5 seasons of Angel, and the Firefly set. I've watched them all at least twice, start to finish, and I've never regretted for a minute buying any of them.

Sorry a little late on the reply. Didn't you see the episode where Joss explains that? Her problem was Ben. Her human side was the part making her hold back. She said if it weren't for Ben she probably would have killed Buffy and her friends long ago.

Bit lame don't you think? The whole Ben/Glory thing was never really explained properly.

I find myself in a far more forgiving mood now than when I last bought Buffy S5; I'm ready to be entertained w/out getting all Star Trek about the 'splaining of everything. If I can accept Dawn, I guess I can accept Ben/Glory...sort of.
Chrisisall, still on S6 ep 4
