Browncoats! There is an alternative to the controversial situation we all find ourselves in re: Serenity Day and Serenity/Now and Equality/Now
I say we put this to a vote. One vote per post, and be brief with your ideas about which day is the best. It's time this got out into conversation with all Browncoats and that way we all get heard. And let's all be civilized about this. Our future is riding on this.
There is a list of good reasons to move this campaign to September 30th that have been suggested by others:
Quote:
I think we should gear this towards donating extra copies you purchase to a public or university library or to the troops.
Seeing one email or one poster is not enough to convince your average person. We need tens of thousands of participants (Browncoats and new fans alike) and it will take a lot of time for our numbers to grow.
Waiting allows us to stagger our advertising campaign. We start with Browncoats, then reach out to borderline fans and genre/comic fans and finally push to get the general public's involvement. The more time there is, the more people that will be participating. Remember, every time a new fan is made we gain that person AND also the people that the new fan can recruit... friends, family, co-workers, etc. Allowing more time for the promotion adds much more weight, and people, to the momentum. One fan who buys a DVD on June 23rd, could have become 10 times (or many more) people by September 30th. Word of mouth needs time to really get going...it's a math thing.
The Sci-Fi conventions are a GREAT opportunity to promote Firefly/Serenity...the attendees are our target audience! Browncoats always have a fan table presence at the cons which attract lots of people. It's a great way to reach beyond the people that frequent message boards. We really should not miss out on this resource. There are lots of fans who attend conventions who would have never seen promotions on message boards.
From a psychological point of view, it's very good to have a nice big event to look forward to. It will be much better, and create a sense of vital (not stagnant) fan base, if the browncoats can talk about events still in the works... rather than something that already happened, with nothing especially new to report. We really NEED the perception that the fan base is continually growing.
Promotion for Wonder Woman will be picking up more and more. There will be lots of news coming out, and advertising at the Sci-Fi conventions too. Serenity Day can ride some of this wave of promotion by mentioning Joss Whedon, writer and director of "Wonder Woman", also wrote and directed Serenity and Firefly. We could attract a lot of comic book fans... a majority of which have a good chance of liking Firefly/Serenity.
If part of our promotional plans include advertisements in local newspapers, we will need lead-in time to design and have ads ready for upcoming issues. June is just too soon to organize this properly and we could be losing a useful marketing tool.
September 30th is a Saturday. That's a GREAT day for the DVD purchase because the majority people aren't trapped at work. They can get online from home, or have the opportunity and time to purchase DVDs at stores. Also, we could suggest that Serenity Day include people planning their own home Serenity screening parties. Fans can have get togethers all over...and invite new folk too!
Maybe we could deflect some of the pressure and expectations for this campaign by gearing it more to a big "Thank You" to Universal on the anniversary of Serenity's premiere. That way the endeavor won't catch so much criticism by people who keep harping that Serenity Day is a naive attempt to impress Universal enough to give us sequels. If the day is approached as a "thank you" and commemoration, plus a great way to build the fan base, and then it turns out to exceed expectations, then all the better.
This is all above and away better than the mess we find ourselves in now. We could promote this awesome charitable event to our hearts contentNOTIFY: Y | REPLY | REPLY WITH QUOTE | PERMALINK | TOP | HOME
Well, ive already started to lay my plans for June 23rd and started to organise things around my end of the verse. I think that we could loose some of the drive if we changed the date know. I mean the word has already started to spread that the Browncoat commmunity will do something on the 23rd, Think we wín more by keeping the original date.
You can’t stop the Signal.
Keep spreading the word about Firefly!

I agree - I've already been doing my part to spread the date to all my friends that love Firefly - plus, haven't people already told Universal about this and given the date?
I personally think if we change now some people may see it as indicisive and pull out. I think we just need to consolidate our efforts, bring all the Brownboat community together (regardless of who's idea this originally was - something I was just reading on another thread http://fireflyfans.net/thread.asp?b=2&t=20146) and present a united front.
Of course...we could do another Serenity Day in September to follow it up...lol
Anyway, that's just my feelings, but I'll do my part to support the cause regardless of what day you all settle on.

I'm just gonna copy what I posted in the other thread (didn't know there'd be another thread for voting):
I have to say, although I thought setting Serenity Day on the same day as the Serenity Now/Equality Now screening (and the birthday bonus) would make perfect sense, but since this can only move in the wrong direction if unrest breaks out amongst Browncoats - and since I trust the veterans- , I have to be bigger than the last thing holding me back (SPITE against B!x) and vote for yes, let's postpone.
It could lose us some momentum, but we get some shiny things to keep us interested and busy along the way, like the Firefly Ornament, new comic books, Done the Impossible, conventions, oh, and let's not forget Serenity Now/Equality Now. :) Not to mention the preparations for september.
It seems like an eternity away, but we're gonna have lots to do, and lots to keep us focused - and most of all, more time to plan, and maybe get some of the Crew on board (not Joss, for reasons mentioned in other threads).
If you all are true Browncoats, we can hold until september, and be even mightier.
And, Zoid, keep in mind we're not "backing off" because of B!x's efforts to boycott us, but because it's best for all as long as B!x is alive. We would have all the "right" to have Serenity Day on June 23rd, but we CHOSE to do the right thing. No worries.
And Serenity Now/Equality Now has prospered and will continue to prosper, (dare I say) mainly due to Serenity Day, but I don't care if THEONETRUEB!X gets his 15 minutes of fame for it, as long as it helps Equality Now and Serenity.
So let's all take a deep breath, move the date, and get going. The website should be ready soon, and the logo is easily changed. No official plan has yet been made "public", so if we spread the word quickly enough, it will only create a lil' bit of confusion, but in the end, it will be better for everyone. If one person can't swallow his pride, a few thousands will have to, because we are mighty.
But even if we put all this ego-trip- gao se aside, september really sounds better and better the more I think about it. More time is always good. There's this "Firefly Starter DVD" thing going on in Germany starting next month (I posted about this), so obviously efforts are being made from an official side (even though it may just be national) to spread the interest in Firefly. So let's spread the disease even more. Uh. "Disease" might not be the right word, but I think we all agree that Firefly is contageous. So we massively recruit new people while organising shiny things for Serenity Day on September 30th.
We're gonna be in for a longer haul, but it's gonna be all the shinier. What say you all?
Bit of a long post.
To sum it up: Although I'd personally prefer June, I see the advantages (and disadvantages) of september, and I trust the veterans, so okay, let's move it.
We're gonna lose the momentum and early summer, though, which is when people are most eager to be active.

The Browncoat community is already doing something on June 23rd. That's part of the problem.
Some things are in motion already for Serenity Day on the 23rd, and it might be a little inconvenient to shift gears to Sept. 30. But there are so many benefits for waiting until September.
Is there anything that is underway that absolutely can't be used or adapted for Sept 30? I think that we should give people more credit than that. This whole idea has been around all of two weeks, and I'm sure that the momentum can carry on. Some people want instant gratification, and lots of people don't want to move the day just because the charity screenings leader is mad. I don't think we should move the date because of him, I think we should move it because it's for the best. What's the use of doing Serenity Day at all if we aren't going to do it right?
Let's take the time, spread the word, and really rock Sept. 30!!

Just a thought...
What if we could all convince Universal to re-release the BDM in theaters nationwide on Sept. 30th? I bet the film would make a ton more cashy money than it did the first time...

Hera, I compliment your bravery on going ahead and posting this. This really needed to be done.
I am voting to move Serenity Day to September 30th. It's the anniversary of the release of the movie and I like marking that, heck I think we ought to make it annual!
It also puts to rest some of this mean fighting that has been going on for some time now, and it just keeps ratcheting up. We are in conflict with a charitable organizer, for cryin' out loud, do we really want to do that? And do we want to push so hard when all we are getting is strife within our own community. This is bad for how Browncoats look to the outside world IMHO. We must compromise about this and set this straight.
We're Browncoats... we're used to holdin' the line together, not shootin' at each other!
I like waiting for all the shiny reasons listed above, more time, closer to DragonCon and all the other cons. There is buzz now and energy now about the charity screenings, there can be more buzz about the Serenity Day event. Heck, maybe even B!x would accept our olive branch and in exchange for our support now, be supportive of us?
B!x? What do you say? We are after all the folks who were brought together by this shiny show.
I have never felt right about choosing June 23rd, just felt wrong to me to not honor a fellow Browncoat's already planned campaign.. and I know we would have pushed his stuff too and I know it could work all cool for both of us and I know it is not a date owned by him and I know he's been harsh. All beside the point. Sometimes you have to lose the battle to win the war!
I like that we are voting too... seems more like an "Independent" idea!
So, my vote is Serenity Day, September 30th!!

Keep it.
Being the date of his birthday was the whole concept, and it makes a point. thats maybe how we get some extra publicity, come on guys. The events would be too close together, 3 months later? And two heads are better than one.

My vote would be to keep it on June 23rd.
As has been said, the word about the 23rd has already begun to be spread. I agree that the loss of momentum and appearing indecisive is sadly probably a bit too much. Additionally, there is no reason why the two events can't each be spun to be mutually beneficial efforts that are just separate efforts by sections in the same Browncoat community. The "story of June 23rd", to use B!x's words, is told largely by us, and every one of us can choose to tell it like a conflict of interest, or we can tell it as a tale of friendship and solidarity in movements. I don't think I have to say that the latter is preferable overall.

Those are some very convincing, well thought out reasons *ahem* for having September 30th as Serenity Day.
For those people who are concerned about changing the date from June 23rd to September 30th... well, this endeavor has only been going for maybe a week now. Anything that has been done can be revised.
Remember, Serenity was originally scheduled to be released on April 22nd! Then Universal pushed the date to September 30th. They made this decision to avoid some big budget Sci-Fi movies that were coming out in April, movies that probably would have either severely hampered Serenity's box office, or buried her. Plus the later release date gave Joss a lot more time to fine tune the movie and really polish it... and he used EVERY day of that extra time. It also gave US advance screenings.
When the movie release date was changed, it was done after several weeks and fans had already done a lot of promotion for the April date. Heck, I STILL have stacks of guerilla marketing posters that become obsolete because of the date change.
There was a lot fuss from the fans... some understood right away, but others were pretty annoyed... some thought it meant Universal lost faith in Serenity. But it was just the opposite, the release date was changed because in the long run it would benefit Serenity. So it took some time, feathers got smoothed again, folks saw the good points of waiting, and adjusted. You gotta give credit to Browncoats for being flexible and changing the mission plan if it gives them a tactical advantage.
If folks want the DVD purchases for Serenity Day to REALLY make an impression... then more time is needed to spread the word and recruit new fans. It's a big world out there, lots of new folk need to know about the 'verse. More than just the faithful from the message boards are needed to make the impact this campaign is aiming for.
Something to acknowledge Joss's birthday on June 23rd can still be done, of course! All this work has brought a lot of attention, okay not all of it positive, but a lot of people woke up. So, definitely do something cool and supportive for Joss' birthday. But save Serenity Day, the big "look at our numbers" for a date where there can be enough momentum gathered for it to really make a splash.
So, I vote for September 30th to be Serenity Day... just in case my meaning wasn't clear... heh...
11th Hour
P.S.
We also don't need all the grief associated with the two big Serenity events happening on the same day. Everytime it looks like there will be a way to have coexistence, the furor heats up again. Is THAT how we want to mark Joss' birthday?! So much energy is being expended fighting amongst ourselves... energy and time that needs to be channeled into guerilla marketing... which takes time and persistence.
This isn't about backing down, or having someone who may have caused a lot of negativity "win", it's separate from that. What's the date that offers the best chances for success? Okay, in my not so humble opinion, it's September 30th... the day Joss, the BDHs, hundreds of cheering Browncoats, stood on the red carpet at the premiere and saw "Serenity" in bright lights on the marquee. THAT was Serenity Day.
P.P.S.
Btw, if I truly thought June 23rd was the best choice for Serenity Day, I wouldn't budge... you can bet on that. But September 30th is the date that wins in my book.
Okay, all of that was waaaaay more than my 2 cents, but I'm feelin' all wordy on this subject...

I vote for Sept. 30. It seems self-destructive for our community to continue this conflict, and I don't think the infighting will stop until there's compromise. It seems to me that the charitable screenings should get priority because, like FollowMal pointed out, they are for charity. It would prove BC's have heart if we could compromise in favor of the charity event.
Can't the existing SerenityDay campaign postpone the date as a gesture of unity and good will? Apologies if it's too difficult, I really don't know.
Any rate I intend to go to the Pasadena charitable screening on June 23. If it turns out I'm also supposed to go shopping on the same day... well twist my arm to go shopping.

Acknowledging both days can certainly be done.
But the main question is, which day will be specifically designated "Serenity Day"? The day geared to demonstrate to Universal, with BIG DVDs sales, that the fans have significant buying power.
So between the two dates, which provides the best chance to really dazzle Universal with numbers that even a major studio will have to admit are great?

Fellow Browncoats,
I, too, am voting to move Serenity Day to September 30th. Here's my rationale (I kinda copied a lot from what I wrote on a private list; but as the issue hasn't changed, nor should my words have to).
I remember a Seinfeld episode, where Jerry explains how, in Children's Court, all issues are resolved by "calling" them. "But, Your Honor, I wanted to sit in the front-seat." "But did you call it? No? Sorry, kiddo, you have to call it. Overruled!" I kinda feel we experienced a day in Children's Court. :) We got slammed, hard, because basically another person "called" the 23rd first; and the majority of the Judges in question, on Whedonesque, ruled against us on that basis.
Now, for the worthier part, can we expect to win an appeal? Or rather, is it wise to even try? See, that's what it boils down to, for me. Momentum ain't exactly an ex-nihilo thing; it's like gravity: the real pull only starts when your mass increases. And for that to happen, we need the cooperation of folks in the field. Were people rude or insensitive to our efforts? Don't matter none. In the simplest of terms, we simply cannot afford to lose, or alienate, the very people we need for this to work. As Mal pointed out, eliminating the middle man is never as simple as it sounds. This quadrant, we play nice. Got enemies enough as it is.
Things got ugly. And that's regrettable. As the Operative said so well: "We should have done this as men. Not with fire." After all, what's in a day? As River pointed out, "Day" is just a vestigial mode of time measurement. :) That's all it really is. There's no objective reason we cannot reschedule for another day. I mean, we can squabble over people bitchin' about us wanting to sit on someone else's chair; and whether it's really his chair; or who died and made him king, etc. And we could really do all that, if deemed necessary. But foremost on our minds, I think, should be the question: do we really NEED to sit on someone else's chair? "Days", as River said, are based on solar cycles. Applicable. :) Which means, we got about 364 others to choose from. I'd say, we do just that; I'm thinking we'll rise again at another date.
Also, I hate fighting. I mean, I'll kill a man in a fair fight. Or if I think he's gonna start a fair fight. :) But, in all earnest, I'm here for River, and the company of my fellow Browncoats. And I thought this was just about us picking up a few extra DVD sets on a given day. Why'd this get so complicated?

Please take note that I say this politely:
Who frakkin' cares?!
I think the only thing Universal would care about is the spike in Serenity DVD sales. Do you think they would like that to happen sooner or later? Or both? And which option would help our cause the most? My answer would be the third option. Both days. If the name of the day has to be official, then June 23rd could be "Serenity Day" and September 30th could be "Serenity Anniversary". But do we have to get caught up in this useless argument over what specific day is called what? The point is to generate a spike in sales of the DVD. Let's focus on that rather than gettin' caught up in the silly details. All we need to do is what will help our cause. One day of a sales spike is good, two days is better. I get the feeling that's how Universal would see it.
Again, I don't mean to sound....however I may be sounding. I'm saying this in the most polite way I know how. So excuse me if none of that came out in a polite fashion.

IMHO, some folks are missing the point of the desire to change it to another day. We aren't going to be able to merge the Serenity Day and Serenity Now/Equality Now campaigns. They ARE NOT going to be mutually beneficial to each other. He does not desire our help, our input or to share the day with us. He won't stop us from stumping for his stuff, but he ain't gonna oblige us with the same. Have you not read his disclaimer and then the bottom "please go read what I really think page"!?
Well, here it is:
http://www.cantstoptheserenity.com/disclaimer/
Instead of getting mad and thinking well, we should just show that guy... I think we need to have more level heads prevail. If this cannot be compromised on and that is now impossible, we should move our date. We help promote the charity screenings and then we turn our attention to our day. In between we recruit and recruit. I have a vision of us trying this too early thinking we're gonna show ole Universal a thing or two about how many folks are gonna buy Serenity and then coming up short and becoming the moonbrains that the folks over on Whedonesque are afraid we are. And as for a follow up on September 30th. If we don't have the numbers on June 23rd to rock their socks off, do you think anyone is going to promote for us again or ride along on the ride again? We get one chance to ace this folks. That is the way it is.

June 23--Joss' birthday--and since so many are already planned--cinemas just cant CHANGE times like that--they "rented" the movie--provided a place for us all to watch
what is the discord-the charity--if you are really against it--dont go seems simple to me
Also, I can kill you with my brain.

Wow.
I was unaware that it had reached this level of division! Division BAD!!!!!!!!
My official Vote- we change the date of Serenity Day (although I think Sept is too far out. We need something more immediate.)
I fully understand Bix's concern that the Serenity Day campaign could be harmful to the promotion of a benefit for Equality Now.
I also ENTIRELY fail to see how SerenityNow/EqualityNow could fail to benefit from a combined effort.
We've actually gotten more people interested in the charity screenings through our efforts than SerenityNow/EqualityNow managed since it began!
However, after reading Bix's disclaimer, my opinion, I'm kinda of the opinion of screw him and the horse that he rode in on. I think I'll send my donation directly to Equality Now, thanks.
YES, Changing the date is a hassle. A HUGE one, seeing as a number of us have been changing our websites, altering sigs, creating graphics, letters, advertising materials, etc that now ALL have to be redone.
But if it keeps the Browncoats working towards their goals -
1) RAISING MONEY FOR EQUALITY NOW
2) GETTING SERENITY BACK IN THE AIR
-then I'm all for it.
I suggest we focus our June 23rd efforts towards Equality Now (not necessarily Serenity Now) and then pull our marketing stunt later in the summer.

The irony is that changing the date will only hurt BIX's cause - less attention being spread and less publicity to fellow browncoats that could only help his cause on that day. So, ironically, if we wanted to stick it to him we should change the date to later... but that would actually end up hurting Equality now in the end...so how messed up is that? Dude needs to swallow his pride and embrace the Serenity Day event and all the people we have sent him and will send him, who will inturn benefit the Equality Now charity.

I personally don’t care how mean B!X becomes about this, because there's nothing we can do about that. The fact remains that he’s put in a lot of work for Serenity Now, and we have a lot of work left to do on the Serenity Day materials. We need the time to do this right. Some of the volunteers have day jobs! We haven’t got the message of what we’re trying to accomplish figured out even amongst ourselves enough to eliminate people's questions, and these questions and ruminations are what’s killing us now.
It’s taken us an entire week alone to decide on a sig, a name, and a url. Those 3 alone caused a lot of churn and airing of great ideas. Now the date has caused this controversy.
We need the time to iron all this out. We don’t have time to do this right and mend (or burn) bridges at the same time.

I suggest that all who can go out and support Bix's charity screenings. Thats the beat thing we can do right now. We keep our efforts up and move the date to Sept. 30th. This gives us more time to prepare for our day. I always thought June 23 was too soon. But we don't abandon any of the charity screenings we were planning on going to or even planning to set up. The screenings still go for a good cause. Our cause still needs time to mature.

An idea...
What about if June 23rd became like a kind of dry run to test the effectiveness of the campaign? Keep campaigning to have folks buy DVDs on that date (Happy Birthday Joss!), afterward, we can see what the sales figures ended up being. Then the battle plan will become a lot clearer. Either the numbers will be really great (don't mean to be negative, but doubt that truly "awesome" numbers can happen in such a short amount of time), or the sales will be a lot less than all the great expectations were hoping for. But at least some "real world" results will be available.
Then folks can get geared up for Serenity Day on September 30th. Either with confidence that we're already coming from a strong place, or the cold, hard realization that there's still a whole lotta promotin' to be done.
If the "test run" thing sounds like a good idea, then it can be named something without the word "Serenity" in it. That will help delineate the DVD buying campaign from the Serenity Now/Equality Now charity screenings. Some peace can be achieved it the names of the different events really are "different".
Sometimes an army has to have a few skirmishes to test itself, then they can come back for the big battle even stronger.
11th Hour
P.S.
For anyone who hasn't done guerilla marketing, let me just say it can be a tough battle. It's fun because you're doing it with your browncoat buddies, but going out there into the big world, and talkin' up folk who won't initially have interest in what you have to say, is a lot to overcome. There's a lot of things out there trying to grab peoples' attention... takes a lot of persistence and good energy to make a dent.
You can get already existing fans excited about an idea, but getting other folk convinced is a different matter. It will take time to create the kind of effect fans want for Serenity Day.

We HAVE to keep it the 23rd.
Our fanbase does not exist in an environment which supports sudden change.
Everyone here knows that the 23rd is the day.
If we change it, we're going to lose a significant percentage of our participants.
Remember, everybody is doing this out of good will. No one is compelled.
If we start changing dates, titles, times, etc.; the effort will simply become confused. Our efforts will dissipate. Just buy it on Amazon or whereever if you can't get to a video store to buy a copy. It's not that hard.

Please change the date to Sept 30th. I find the ruthless infighting very discouraging. I don't want to go up against the vets. Since they are so offended, I think we should be gracious and just pick a different day. Besides, Serenity's anniversary would have more significance to Universal than Joss' birthday. This project would be a great way to say thank you to Universal. It makes more sense to approach it this way rather than claiming to be able to show them huge sales numbers to influence them to make more Serenity installments. Just make it a day of celebration for what we have already been given and what we hope to have more of.
Avoiding conflict among The Coats will not cause a loss of momentum. It will contribute toward building momentum and the project will become stronger and more successful. Success is our ultimate goal.

Speaking from experience, if you're going to go ahead with this you'll need more time in terms of planning and speaking to the press and the fanbase. Plus a lot of the fans don't know who the organisers are. Bonds have to be built and there has to be some sort of recognition factor. I didn't have a clue who you guys were which is why I said what I said at Whedonesque.
June 23rd looks like a rush date and smacks of a hasty effort which ultimately will not achieve much. September 30th is a far more recogniseable date to Browncoats than June 23rd.
And might I suggest that you have your own dedicated PHP forum for the campaign? As threads here tend to get bumped and down like there's no tomorrow. And it's easier for people to post their own ideas on how to get noticed and for other people to comment on the ideas.

Change it.
Yeah, who am I? :) I'm DizzyEllie, and I've been following this from pretty much the beginning.
B!X is pretty popular amongst many of the fans outside of this site, and sorry, but as much as I disagree with how he voices his opinion, he does have the high-ground on this one: he picked the date first and his cause is for charity. There is no way you can win that argument. The more folks push against B!X and his screenings, the more this whole thing will be viewed very negatively from the fanbase outside of FFF.net. Once again, I do not agree with how B!X is handling this (he could be nicer, and just say "no" to combining the events and state the two events are not linked; instead he is deriding the Serenity Day folks as selfish and self-serving. Not cool or classy in my book.).
Pick Sept 30, and there is months to get the word out, no conflict with the very-vocal-B!X, and there will be some distance from all this negativity.
Sorry, but if you want this effort to succeed, you'll have to pull in more people then from FFF.net. But I, for one, will be on board with my purchase no matter what day you choose.
Best of luck, either way!

Really? Are browncoats so fragile and easily discouraged that a date change will collapse the environment? Whoa... if the fanbase is that easily toppled, it wasn't very strong to begin with.
Remember, Serenity was originally scheduled to be released on April 22nd. Universal changed the date after several weeks. Sure it caused a fuss, but the browncoats regrouped and continued the campaign. Give the fans some credit.

Besides, wouldn't it be a good to get an idea of just how strong the sales will be by have a "first phase" buying campaign on the 23rd. Then use those figures to gage how to proceed with the really big Serenity Day campaign on September 30th?

If the name of the day has to be official, then June 23rd could be "Serenity Day" and September 30th could be "Serenity Anniversary". But do we have to get caught up in this useless argument over what specific day is called what? The point is to generate a spike in sales of the DVD. Let's focus on that rather than gettin' caught up in the silly details. All we need to do is what will help our cause. One day of a sales spike is good, two days is better. I get the feeling that's how Universal would see it.

Another truth. We here on FFF.net are insular. We think those shiny numbers coming in are the folks who frequent this place every day and are on here posting constantly. That is not so. There is a small core group of folks who are here all the time and some who come and go. You are all miscounting the support from fans on other boards... they do not feel the same way about this. Some of them are looking at this fighting and have no desire to be associated with this campaign.
We need numbers, big numbers to do this right. More time gives us those numbers. It's just sensible. Does a general go into battle with not enough troops and expect to be successful? Do they go into battle fighting amongst themselves and expect to win? That is what we are talking about here.

I have two points to make.
First, I vote for September. It does make more sense to take more time and recruit more Browncoats. Plus, showing a united front makes a whole lot of sense.
Second, who is in charge of making the final decision? Effectiveness on the battlefield demands that there must be a leader, and that the troops must follow, even if they don't necessarily agree.I have no ego in this, so tell me which way to shoot, and I'll shoot. I'll shoot twice if I have to.

Right now, I'm feeling like not staying with this. This whole thing is becoming more complicated than it really needs to be. That's what's causing this infighting. It should be simple. We got a day. Stick with it. We got another day as well. And we'll go with that. That's not difficult. If you keep it simple, things stay simple and fun. But if you start making things more complex than need be, by having official names and stuff that a lot of people need to agree on, you're just gonna get more arguing. A large group of people aren't gonna agree on the exact same thing.
Stop with the voting. Say "Show up on June 23rd." Also say "Then show up on September 30th." That's not hard. Keep it simple for everyone.

I give the fans plenty of credit. I'm one of them. But FFF.net is among the most rabid places on the net regarding the 'verse; and we're not even focused on one plan. I'm not so worried about a postponement as a dispersed and meaningless effort. Too many cooks are spoiling the soup here. The plan needs to be concretized.
Look at the board. People are confused, and have their own ideas.

Well, it's been the 23rd ever since I remember dates being bandied around. Now we've got a schism over the 23rd/30th and some people wanting to put forth 2 efforts instead of one, etc. Sounds to me like the meaningless blip that some people have been calling our effort will be even more meaniningless if it happens in two or three increments within a nebulous plan of attack. Go for the 30th if you think it's better for some reason. I still don't see why the efforts can't be complimentary if unfortunately unaffiliated.

Again, I don't think there's enough focus to run 2 campaigns. And if we mux things up any more, we won't even know what to make of the June 23rd numbers or what they represent.
Secondly, unlike most EVERYONE ELSE. I think the 23rd could be a felicitous date. Can't we share? We did B!x a favor by advertising those gigs on our boards. B!x accused us of solipsizing the 'verse, but his comments are clearly the finest example of solipsistic epistemology. I don't think anyone was trying to "steal" anything here at FFF.net.

And I also don't want to expend more energy explaining what has already been posted in several threads.
The short: The bottom line is NOT just a spike in DVD sales. The Serenity Day campaign is being geared to have really huge sales, huge enough to impress Universal.
There are conflicting purposes here. The website for Serenity Day wants to wow Universal with enough sales to convince them to make a sequel. Other fans are content with showing a spike in sales. These are two VERY DIFFERENT goals.
This thread is for voting on which day to designate Serenity Day. The BIG day for really showing awesome sales to Universal. That kind of campaign needs a lot of time and work to really pull off. If not, then the fan base still looks too small, at least in Universal's eyes, to warrant the kind of investment more incarnations of Serenity will cost.

• June 23rd ~ First test run to see what numbers of the DVD buying campaign are. Use this info and experience to improve the campaign for the BIG buying endeavor on Serenity Day, September 30th.
• Choose a 'verse themed name for June 23rd that does not include the word "Serenity". This will do a lot to separate the campaign from the "Serenity Now/Equality Now" screenings, and turn the heat off all the conflicts over the endeavors occuring on the same date.

One more thing.
You want this to be a successful effort, yes? Well, at least two people I know who have much influence over the Serenifly fandom are not only not on board with this, but also believe this effort is ill-conceived as is. I am talking about Gossi and SimonF (sorry to bring you guys into this, but this needs to be said). Both of these people have a lot of sway over the fandom, and not having them onboard hurts the effort. I believe if the date stays as-is, not only will your backs be against the wall, but there will be a lingering bad taste in the fandom's mouth over this. In the end, no one is going to blame B!X, no matter how passive-aggressive he is (history being writen by the winners, and all that). If you choose two dates, B!X will still be hyper-defensive and alarmist, and you could doom the second date, by virtue of the "bad press" this effort is getting and will continue to get until June 23.
By changing the date, you can do so much--not the least of which end this drama and keep the fandom united. B!X will always be hyper-defensive, but at least you can try to get Gossi and SimonF to support the effort on an alternative date (or at least not have them so openly questioning it).
My question to the organizers is this: What means more, the fact that this date was chosen 2 weeks ago, and it must stick no matter what, or trying to get as many people, both new fans and old, united in this effort?
Keep it June 23, and I'm sorry, but my feeling is this will not be near as successful as you all hope.
Once again, though, best of luck. And I mean that sincerely. :)

One, I found out about the screenings after the endeavor to buy the DVD. Ok, no big deal, If I could go to one I would and for an awesome cause. This is the only FF site I visit.
When we say WE need more time to prepare..(i.e. Sept. 30th) Does this mean WE will be appointing people to do specific things for this day? To
get things organized we have to be organized. Sorry, I can't see his happening effectively over the net. Without clear, compromising
leadership... we are already at each others throats after a few weeks.
What I do see is what HAS been happening all along; suggestions being made and people run with it on their own. 1 makes a website or stickers or posters.
For one, I have tried to recruit everyone I know since the day I finished the series. I have already pressured the same to support the 23rd.
And I think we are after the people that are not die-hard fans yet. To get the numbers we need means tapping into the "casual fan's" pocket.
If I tell a casual fan or DVD buyer, oh wait, forget the 23rd. It is now Sept. 30th, they will be like “is this worth it, better change my calendar right now”? I think regardless of unanimous support we will see a sales spike both days now. The numbers we need ARE great, it may take two days.
I see threats, "if u change it i am not gonna do it" Whah whah whah... Beleive me no one person is gonna change it. Isn’t “the one true goal” to get the BDHs back?
For the date change reasoning:
I do know Universal is not concerned about how gracious we are to any fellow browncoats and the clock is ticking. We put money in there hands
and they pay attention.
I would think that no one involved with wonder woman would want the BCs riding the promo coattail and that COULD be negative. Or even an
albatross for Joss. (would he love it though?). I think the Serenity will be hyped on its own around that time.

I am a supporter of the day change. 11th Hour made some great suggestions, going to cons getting support(even from verse actors). But I proprose a compromise. Let june 23rd not be just serenity day but a start of a long camapaign. Ending on Sept 30th. various waves, missions in the summer, everyone can participate in. that way we can do more than just"get Universal to notice", but to get people to notice, and show we are in it for the long haul.
Thats my piece.
ETA:
I just realized that 11th hour posted just that... two days june 23rd and sept 30th. whops Im an idiot :P
Oh and in terms of Gossi...check out the post on whedonesque at the end.
http://whedonesque.com/comments/10149#121449
Gossi does not"support it" but he isn't on all out war to stomp us out. He actually likes the way this is going, and inf act even mentioned it in his newsletter he sent out from serenitymovie.org
And you know those two.. are not the only ones in the fandom. I like to think 11thHour is an honourable person who has been here since the beginning. I'M sure Jeremy Niesh would support this venture, although I cant speak for him, judging from his previous comments and opinions, he would welcome any fan endavour. He is busy now with done the impossible dvd, but as soon as he finishes... im sure he would love to join in(has anyone contacted him?)

Ack! One more thing [gotta stop saying, that, I keep thinking up new points].
Fan campaigns can and do succeed. Look at what B!X himself is doing. By forcing this to be so soon--for no other reason then June 23 is the date that's been promoted for all of two weeks--it's going to encourage chaos.
What this campaign needs is leadership and planning. More time will only help with that. Time encourages cohesiveness; being rushed (and dealing with hurt feelings and bad mojo on top of it) encourages more chaos.
Like 11th said, you all are going to basically have one shot to make this work. Rush it, and it will fail. Plan it, get the other sites on board, and it will do much better.
By the way, I post/lurk on many FF sites, and mod at serenitymovie.org, as well as being a long-time fan. Those of you who think the fans at fff.net is big enough to carry this plan through are, frankly, misguided. Without whedonesque, serenitymovie.org, or even the OB on board with this, you will never reach the potential numbers you could if you just let things cool down and wait 3 months.

OMG! It all makes sense now! Thank you for suggesting this, Kurya. It's the forest for the trees.
It seems it's the planning and coming to a concensus that is yet to happen. Planning until June 23rd, doing a rollout of the promotional materials needed on that date so that we all start the dance on the same foot, with the purchase date being September 30th.
It's so simple an idea! It may just work.
I can just hear all the veterans going "Uh, yeah. The planning."

Hey.
Acutally if you read 11th hours words, she is saying the same thing... hehe she is the genius. *bows to 11th Hour!!!!* :P And she thought it first awhile ago...I think I was just collating the ideas together.
Seriously... you can do the purchase on june 23rd. I know this may be less of an impact, but if we have a smaller spike on june 23rd , and a larger spike on sept 30th, I think it would be great. There are those with enthusiasm that want to buy it on june 23rd... and have friends and they want to press them... so let them! Once they buy the dvd... (see firefly etc). You can have THEM press others to buy on Sept 30th! Like a widespread 2-D chain effect thingy(you get what I say right?)
There are those of us here for the long haul( I am), so lets go for both june 23rd sept 30th.... but for those of us who want to press on june 23rrd lets do it.
In fact I would venture to change the banners, and the signatures etc to :
June 23rd is only the beginning. Serenity Campaign.
Or something like that.
Or to remove references to 23rd.
Joss Whedon's Birthday will be the beginning of something new. Serenity Campaign

Hi Prakash. :)
No, I know Gossi and Simon aren't the only fans out there, but they both have a lot of sway (btw, getting Jeremy on board is a very good idea) (and as honorable as 11th is, she doesn’t have a website with thousands of visitors each day. Invoking her name has cache with the fandom, but it doesn’t do much more for the effort then that, and many new fans don't know who she is anyway). While Gossi isn't technically against the effort, neither is he exactly going out of his way to show any kind of support. Whereas B!X is getting a lot of support from Gossi, and good press on whedonesque (not exactly Simon's doing, of course, but he has come out and said this was one of the worst fan ideas he's heard). I'm not saying folks need to kiss ass or anything, but I do think it's important that when it's big numbers you're looking for, you cover as much ground as you can. Build bridges, make friends, prove Simon wrong. :)

Well I think, if we can get Gossi's support for the post june 23rd bulge.... (since SNEN will be out of the way), it would be great. How about Haken on this site, is he still around? Can we put banners on this website etc.

This is great. I'm going to come out and say it so the arguing can be over, because I hate arguing. Since what we need in this campaign is numbers to make it work, I agree with Kuyra and Hera. Up until June 23 we spread the word that something big is going to happen to re-light Firefly. On june 23 we begin a letter campaign Universal and anyone else including newspapers, online news site, even the BDH's if you want. That goes on constantly until Sept. 30, gaining momemtum and numbers. Even spread the word at conventions, that'll be huge. And then on Sept. 30 the massive DVD purchase hits.
Remember, we're fighting a war here. If we just do something on June 23, we are only fighting one battle and then waiting to see the result. So instead we fight a campaign that can grow and adapt over time, then we come with the rear hand strike. It's a one-two punch.
So there I said it, thats the plan. Go out, spread the word, support the charity screenings for their cause and not ours, and on June 23 the campaign begins for a Sept. 30 finale. QED, done.
One goal.
One plan.
One army of Browncoats.
On June 23rd, you can't stop the signal.
On September 30, we aim to misbehave.

*waves* I'm another. The nastiness I've seen both here and on Whedonesque has been almost Reaver-worthy, but frankly, it's about to turn me off from the whole shootin' match.

I'm votin' for Sept. 30th. We need more time. Two months to do what we've got our sights on, just ain't enough time. Add to that, having problems getting the word out in many areas of the WWW due to infighting with our fellow Browncoats...I just can't say, what that would do to us.
The Serenity Now/Equality Now folks need space and respect. I personally don't care iffin' its not reciprocated, they planned their event...their charity event first--and well in advance--so they at least deserve it for that, even if you feel they don't deserve 'em for nothin' else. I've done charity organizing before--not at that level, but I've done it and quite frankly, it's a highly stressful endeavour (and don't forget to add all your other usual stresses into it...family, work, bills, etc). The bigger the project, the higher the stress, so while I'm unhappy at the messages I've seen from SN/EN's organizer, I understand it and can sympathize. (The 'hate-me' line forms over there to the left. <----
) I know a lot of folks don't understand why he doesn't see it as help and support for the charity event, but since he isn't seeing it that way, I think we should back off and come at this from another day. In other words, if we're pissing other people in our own fandom off, we're only hamstringing ourselves. --->
The sales for both the show and the BDM are still good...I doubt that it's likely that Universal will throw it all away that quickly--and make no mistake, three months ain't that much time, folks. For a movie that was released on DVD five months ago, to still be seling that well, is makin' them take notice. They've already shown that they can be trusted not to throw the baby out with the bathwater, so let's afford them a bit 'o respect, too, okay?
As I've seen in several posts here and 'abroad,' I think we need to make this a bit less 'lets show 'em we mean business,' and more of 'thank you, kindly, we appreciate what ya'll done for us.' But then, that's just MHO; YMMV.
I'm off to go look for happy, shiny threads and fics.

It's the board that Gossi so graciously started after the official movie board the UB, folded.
All the folks who have been around for some time and are influential and also post on Whedonesque are over there.
To have Gossi support this effort and help us promote it over there, would be invaluable.
We would be two.. no maybe with some respect shared between us, three boards of folks joining together to do this thing.
I have seen the ads and the talk re: the Serenity Now/Equality Now campaign over there. It's great and gets lots of attention. It'd sure be nice to have Gossi and his shiny board on our side.

This is a great idea... I feel we need time AND we don't have a lot of it. The sooner the better.. This is not about instant gratification, it is about a business model.
The reason Wal-Mart has started to bundle Serenity with COR is because it is coming to the end of its sales cycle... if the largest retailer thinks so, it usually becomes a trend.
An inital wave followed by promos can be ridden into Sept. The numbers we need isn't gonna happen in a day.... and universal has running totals

There are a lot of good arguments flowing both ways. but just for the recored my my vote is for the change, to sept 30th. more time to prepare, and to do it as a thank you rather than an attack on universal, and every other point that has been raised, im not going to waste your time by listing them all.
edited ok the long campaign thing is now sounding good. june 23 the start 30th the target.
BUT
Ok, confused much? - erm YES.

From what I can tell this argument seems to be over. We need more support and that will take time. Let's get Kaele's word on this because she chose to be our leader and then go from there.
Two things that we need the most: Time and numbers. Right now we have neither. By Sept. 30 we could have an overwhelming amount of both.

Lol, because Kurya posted wrong first, so did I in response... here goes...
I like the campaign plan. We could ALL start a "Serenity Campaign" on June 23rd by supporting Serenity Now/Equality Now (IT'S CHARITY!), then set up summer BBQ Shindigs, collect support on the conventions, rally the troops, plan September 30th to the minute, maybe get some of the cast on board (recording short video messages at a convention to motivate people is not much work for them, and they'll like it, and it will do wonders for morale.). Then we top it off with Serenity Day in September and watch how our buying frenzy combined with spreading the word (and the DVDs) and Christmas sales are gonna do.
The reason "we are gonna make it bigger, so we made a campaign out of it and set Serenity Day as the Grand Finale on Sept 30th" sounds good enough to me to let everyone save face or whatever.
And how could even THEONEANDTRUEALMIGHTYB!X object to that "campaign"-plan? "HIS" event starting off a campaign that spans all of the summer? He'll like it, and he can't complain that we're hijacking anything, because we're coming to him as fellow Browncoats to help Serenity Now/Equality Now and not ask anything in return but his support for the campaign as a whole. If he still objects, I think his own people will start asking questions as to his priorities, if they haven't already. He's not our business, though, Serenity is.
Let's do what's best for Serenity.
I support the "Serenity Summer Campaign"-idea with the SN/EN screenings as the start (as a pure charity event), Serenity Day on Sept. 30th to top it off, and all manners of shiny Shindigs and conventions and missions inbetween.
Come on, people, this is gonna ROCK! There's damage done no matter what we do, and this is the best way to get out of this increasingly unpleasant situation with the best results for everyone.

Well I think that is kaele's intention anyways to fight a long war, but I think she is worried( I cant speak for her, I aint no River:P), that if she talks about a lpong campaign, she may lose the interest of some of the fans. Its not explicit on the webstie, but maybe what she is hoping that if people are all jazzed about june 23rd, she will be betting that people will be jazzed to do promoting and etc throughout the summer and do a super duper charge on Sept 30th. But... then Universal may see that and see it as a tactic of "crazy" fans with money to spend...so maybe buy only on Sept 30th... but then...
oh
Im going in circles... *getting dizzy now...* must sit down.
Anyways.... for what its worth, I say go for both days, a charge to june 23rd and go all out for sept 30th. June 23rd may also prove useful as a test case and see what worked and what didnt, as 11th Hour said.
Some other people have posted good points of forgeting june 23rd. What if sept 30th was claimed...but then someone else(*cough* wont say the name....*cough*), said no thats my day as well I am planning something else footwashing for pedastrians. We will say... but nobody else claimed it, and he might say... yeah well you are all a bunch of foolish crazy people.... will we have to back down again as well b/c someone of "popularity" said we have to back down? That is the big concern about stepping down for june 23rd, and I can honestly understand that.

Steering clear of June 23rd, except to promote SerenityNow/EqualityNow is our safest bet to preserve unity in the fandom.
There's alot of anger happening right now (I happen to be a little part of that, I admit). But we need to UNITE.
I think we should focus all our efforts on Serenity for Equality Now for June 23rd, and then after that begin the Big Push to Sept 30th, with Serenity Summer.
(And not necessarily on the Charity Showings. 99% of our fanbase is nowhere in a place that's doing a showing. That's why I ignored the whole thing for so long. I can't take an extra day off to go to Portland or to Santa Barbara.)

Well, I for one, can say that I could be involved with this effort if the date was changed. I never got involved in the first place because I've got too much going on in my life now--but Sept 30? That's doable. I'm sure I'm not the only one. I doubt the fire will come off of this if that date is changed--in fact I really believe the opposite will happen. Right now, outside of FFF.net, this effort is not very well known, and of the people who have heard of it, it's got a negative vibe (especially at whedonesque).
And it might go far if someone who is good with diplomacy sends B!X a note of good luck with his screenings, and asks him to come on board with a launch, rather then (in his eyes) a competing campaign.

Fuck the elite professional fans at Whedonesque.
I love all the enthusiasm here at FFF and don't let anyone tell you it's bad for fandom. That's bullshit.
Nobody owns June 23, nobody is a better fan than anyone else. Don't cave in to "save the fandom" crap, that is ridiculous. As if you suddenly have to follow a bunch of rules because you love the show and want to share it with others.
The negative, condencending attitude in that Whedonesque thread really annoys me. It's THE site for Joss news though, and Joss frequently posts there himself, which is damn cool. But the people who post there aren't better fans than anyone else, and they act like they're in charge of all Joss fan projects or something. I say, don't give in to that shit.

Nah, you're right, Prakash. I've tangled/watched him tangle with people on the boards many a time, and trust me, folks, it ain't being stressed with his charity screenings that makes him like this. It's his nature. Best to let it drop, I guess.

I'm all for two days. From what I've seen, quite a few people have already set up screenings and other plans for that day that can't be easily changed. And fans gained on 23rd June would have something for which to work(ie, getting recruits for 30th Sept)over the summer. And, as a student, I know I would probably be more excited about something happening in the summer, though I can see a September date livening up the biginning of the school year, too.
And hey, two chances to get together and go biggledy over Serenity/Firefly have got to be better than one, right?
So let's go for the gusto and show them what we can do!

You guys... the fandom won't be torn apart. What does that even mean anyway? The fans aren't going anywhere.
Joss doesn't care about fan crap. He's seen SO MUCH already with the Buffy boards. He's a pro. The concept of fandom being torn apart is just plain silly.
What does Joss want on his birthday? I don't know. But if there are a bunch of charity screenings and another group of people organizing a DVD purchase - If I were Joss I'd be happy.
Either way, it doesn't matter. The "fandom" is just fine, will be just fine. And whether or not Joss has a happy birthday will NOT depend on a petty fan squabble about who is giving the best present.
Browncoat Army made a plan and they should not be bullied or guilt tripped by other fans.

Invoking her name has cache with the fandom, but it doesn’t do much more for the effort then that, and many new fans don't know who she is anyway).
A lot of new fans, who weren't around for the original guerilla marketing battles to get the movie made, are not familiar with my work... unless they've seen it around and didn't know "who" did it, or if they bought the Serenity RPG book.
However, once new fans find my webpage they're very happy to have the posters available so they can do their own guerilla marketing. I love getting emails and posts from new fans. The energy is so good for revitalizing the campaign for more Firefly/Serenity.
My website doesn't get thousands (except for a few times during special promotions) of visitors each day like the message boards do... but the site has just passed the 45,000 hit mark... which ain't too shabby!
Also, the "cache" reference is nice... but I can also offer new promotional items for the endeavor... revised posters and new banners to contribute to the cause. I'd also be able to add an announcement about the Serenity Summer Campaign (or whatever it will be called) which is leading up to the big Serenity Day. My site still gets many hits a day, and it's another way to help put the word out.

Ok, maybe its just me, but the SSC (Serenity Summer Campaign) seems to offer everyone what they want.
23 of juners have there day, we get all summer to have shindigs and arrange for a big blow out on the 30th of september, which the change of date voters can get behind.
I back the SSC, anyone with me?
Just trying to bring some order to a debate that seems to be going round in circles.
Why not spend the summer in serenity? SSC

This is my first time commenting on any kind of message board. I just finished watching the Firefly DVDs, I have not yet seen Serenity. Came across this site and this thread and figured I might as well throw in my two cents based on my somewhat limited knowledge of the history here, that the Sept. 30th date is the best choice for a variety of reasons.
1) June 23rd is awfully soon and as someone who has planned some really large events - y'all will have more fun if you give yourself more time.
2) The purpose of the charity screenings is to raise money for Joss' favorite charity as a kind of birthday gift. The purpose of your event is very different (send a message to Universal) - one good reason to separate them (as well as to keep the peace). The date of Sept. 30th is more relevant to your cause.
3) I'm guessing that it is better to watch Firefly before seeing the movie. So if you are looking for a way to build and keep momentum towards the Sept. 30th date. Start with a Firefly blitz, maybe emphasizing an episode each week leading up to the 9/30 date.
4) I don't know that a one-day spike in DVD sales is as important as overall sales. What the movie studio needs to know is that a large number of people would be interested in more shows/movies. Perhaps your goal should be to get to a certain number of DVDs sold by the Sept 30th date. Or to keep a steady stream of new sales in order to keep the series and movie Amazon rating above a certain level. I was surprised when I ordered Firefly that it ranked higher than some newly released movies. Anyway, this once again points to the one year anniversary of the movie being the date for your final goal.
And that way as you get new people hooked on the series, you aren't asking them to hold off purchasing DVDs - I wasn't going to be able to wait until June 23rd anyway.
I would also encourage you to strongly support the other event, in hopes for reciprical PR.

Hey 11th Hour, hope you don't think I was bashing you. I love your work, and your place in Firefly/Serenity history, is, well, historic. :) People should definitely go to your site and grab the art, then plaster it on anything, as is intended. (And you DVD cover design covers the shameful llama on my Serenity DVD.)
My point was, that we need to get folks who run the fan forums involved. I didn't mean to make it sound like you had nothing to contribute other then cache, and I'm sorry if it came off that way. When Prakash mentioned your name in response to me throwing out Gossi and Simon's names, I meant to respond that the comparison is more apples/oranges. I was trying to clarify my previous post, and did so poorly I guess.
You are the goddess of guerrilla marketing, of course you're important in all this, and this whole campaign is better for having you on board. :)

Diz,
Anyone who calls me a goddess, is downright shiny in my book. Muchas gracias!
Actually, I thought your post regarding the message boards was very positive... and I agree! Those sites get lots of traffic and are a very valuable, in fact a crucial, way to spread the word.
Mainly I wanted to let folks know that I'm on hand to contribute guerilla marketing art, posters and banners, and whatever else I'm able to do. I'm a bit crazy busy now, finishing more art in connection with the Serenity RPG, but I'll have more time in a few weeks.
Also, and this is still in the planning stages, I'll be at Dragon*Con and I'd LOVE to help promote Serenity Day there. Dragon*Con takes place at the beginning of September and it will be a wonderful big Sci-Fi convention to do a final promotional push. Plus, we can mention that the end of September is a good time to stock up on holiday gifts... and Serenity DVDs require no refrigeration, they'll keep 'till December!
I appreciate all the kind remarks.
Yer Art Companion,
11th
P.S.
Glad to hear you're enjoying my alt DVD cover... there will be another design coming soon...

So its settled then. The plan is to do what has is now being called the Serenity Summer Campaign that will have a grand performance on Serenity Day, September 30.
Quick question. Does anyone know the address of who we should write to at Universal. It's a vital piece of information and all my suggestions bank on that little bit of knowledge.
I changed my sig a few posts ago, I think it sums up this new idea well. It's nothing final but I kind of like it and think it's a good start. I'm running with this idea now and IMHO I think we all should.
One goal.

I like the idea of a Serenity Summer Campaign and Serenity Day, September 30. It avoids conflicts with other events. It also give us more time.
This campaign will not succeed unless all the Firefly/serenity FAN web sites work together. Some of you might not realize that SciFi and IMBd have very active message boards. Don't forget the Podcast too.
Peace my friends, It's OK to debate, but let's play nice!

I vote for this.
Promote, support, rally for the Serenity Now/Equality Now charity showings on June 23rd, try gathering support in our own areas for screenings, attend if at all possible;
support and promote a "Serenity Summer Campaign" that will garner more of an influx of new browncoats with our own shindigs and from the charity screenings;
cap it with "Serenity Day September 30th".
This will give all of us a fresh spark to promote and spread the word, not to mention grant us time to pull together marketing, get the media involved and support from all browncoats across these fan boards.
Since signing on fff.net a couple months ago I've been on daily, even if I don't post every time... I'm pretty up on all the discussions, so there's definitely NOT good vibes lately with all of this.. Honestly, this solution seems to make the most sense, AND, grants us ALL time to get things rolling...
(Personally, I'm kinda digging all this summer promotion thing, and can see doing some of my own BBQ shindigs!!!)
"Wanna?"

There's a few things I need to say, and I'm hoping you all will take this with due respect.
Far as I'm aware, there has been no fighting between B!x and I, between B!x and Maxrimstain, or between B!x and anyone. Just because there's a disclaimer on his site does not mean he's fighting with anyone. It was explained to me that one of the screenings wished to call their shindig a "Serenity Day benefit." If I had been working for months on something that was very near and dear to me to have something that popped up within a week being credited with all my hard work, my nose would be out of joint too.
I've e-mailed B!x and have been e-mailed back. Twice. I don't recall any name flinging or nasty words exchanged. Actually, I've got records of him telling me to go ahead and promote his site, but to PLEASE make sure that it is clear that the two events are two separately organized events. One of my volunteers has gone so far as to have pre-typed posts on the Browncoat Signal Corps website approved by B!x. I have asked for nothing more from him.
I see no arguements going on in this relationship, only on this board and at Whedonesque. I've had my comments posted on there, and I'll repeat the same to you. Give it a chance.
If everything is based on how B!x feels about having his date usurped, then it should be Joss we're asking. And following that odd line of rationale, Sept. 30th is out as well, because Gossi mentioned a "Thank you, Universal" letter writing campaign. This is a path of procrastination and twisted lines of what-ifs and might-bes that I do not want to head down.
I stepped up, am trying to coordinate a few things, and was about to finalize some of them by week's end. I HAD made a decision and had announced it to everyone on the volunteer mailing list.
I'm keeping the 23rd as the Serenity Day DVD Drive.
Now don't all go getting your knickers in a twist if you voted for the 30th, because I ain't done yet!
Forget the donated website fees, donated URLs, and donated PHPBB, there's a darn good reason for it.
The Browncoat Army.
An Army isn't assembled for one measly battle, it's assembled to defend, to protect, to organize long standing campaigns, and sometimes even to attack. This is what I'd like you all to do, although we're attacking in the metaphorical sense. We have a fandom to protect here and a movie to promote. Doesn't matter what day, what it's called, who organized it, or what it's in honor of!
Our first big event after this moment happens on the 23rd. Then it'll be the next event (which will probably be Sept. 30th once I speak to Gossi and that HAS been mentioned on a thread I posted on) and then the next, and then the next. I'm in for the long haul and just because I'm pushing for June 23rd does not mean I'm slacking off come June 24th!
But the point is that we're PRO-ACTIVE. We're working for what we love. Even if it's a single post on a board somewhere to spread the word. Not everyone will be able to attend a screening, myself included. This is a way to involve all Browncoats, new and old.
If anyone who volunteered feels that they cannot complete what was assigned to them, then I please ask that you forward on to me what you have accomplished and either myself or another volunteer will try and continue. I do NOT want people stressed over this. If you can't run, you walk, if you can't do that...well, you know the rest.

Now for some very exciting news: I've been contacted by two very important websites about June 23rd.
www.Whedonverse.org and www.Gateworld.net.
Whedonverse.org has been dedicated to donating Joss Whedon related DVDs (and sometimes books and comics!) to libraries and troops since 2004. They showed a great interest in coordinating something with us and I'll be cultivating that into something more solid with my webgenius (yes, it's one word now).
Gateworld.net is a large Stargate website who approached ME. Yeah, I know, amazing, they're not even Firefly related but there's a whole thread related to June 23rd and

We, the Fresno Browncoats, began planning two weeks ago today for the June 23 date (22 in our case). We have a theater, we have sponsors, we have a website. Everything is a go for that date.
We can't and won't abandon our plans. Hard work has gone into this so far. We're almost to the fun part--putting up flyers all over town, selling tickets, and finding prizes for a trivia session before the show starts.
Once this event is over, I will be ready to take on something else. It's a lot of fun, and I wouldn't miss it for anything.
So here's my vote: Keep the June 23 screenings, and make plans for the summer and September 30.

You may not be aware of any fights, but there was a rather heated exchange between b!x and kurya on WHEDONesque that has been referred to by several people. Here's the link in case you missed it:
http://whedonesque.com/comments/10149
The exchange got so heated in fact that a moderator had to step in to request that those involved take the discussion off-site.
Btw, you know good and well how upset b!x's disclaimer made many of the good folks involved in this campaign... there were numerous emails commenting on it. I find your statement to be rather disingenuous.
Quote:
Just because there's a disclaimer on his site does not mean he's fighting with anyone.
There have been many people put off by the wording of that disclaimer... it even prompted a thread on this site because it has caused upset. See the posts from ZOID detailing his emails with b!x, there's plenty of fightin' words exchanged there.

"Everything" is not based on how b!x feels, and many of the posts on this site reflect that. Many people who voted for September 30th to be "Serenity Day" have stated that their main reason is because they feel strongly that more time is needed for the day to succeed the way people want it to. Did you read those posts?
As for Gossi's idea to have September 30th be a "Thank You" day to Universal... well wouldn't a big "Serenity Day" DVD buying day be a great way to thank them? Where's the conflict? The two go together beautifully.
Btw, even gossi himself, on Whedonesque, suggested that Serenity Day take place on September 30th... appears he doesn't have a problem with it.

For something meant to involve all Browncoats, a lot of peoples' opinions, and votes, are being brushed aside.

There's just so much "I" in those statements.
A fair vote can be respected, but that mailing list you mentioned all of a sudden had people popping up "voting" for the 23rd who I hadn't even seen in the loop before that. There were serious rumblings on the way the vote was handled... and then plans were pushed hard to make the 23rd the date whether the "30th" folks liked it or not.
It was the tactics I don't agree with.

Wow--I totally missed all the "fun"
....
I vote for the Campaign. I hate that there is bad air between Browncoats... "Why is everyone so mad..?"... The one thing that truly matters during the hiatus of Firefly is EACH OTHER. Without each other, we have nothing. We need everyone to be on good terms and show respect for one another.
It's not guaranteed that we'll all be warm and fuzzy for every single Browncoat...but at least we can all show respect for one another. Doesn't matter who "started it" (we're not 5 years old)--just matters that we get this bad air cleared away.
I've only been a Browncoat since March--but the thing I love about ya'll is that you stick together and you hold together. Whether newbs or vets or in between...we have to be united. At one point, you were a newb, and at one point, hopefully, a vet has given some wisdom. We're all on the same level here.
For the same reasons others have voted to change the date, so too, do I. If there's any bad feelings that should be going on....it should be used positively on those wanting to see us fail!
