At first I was like "WTF"?
Then I read this:
http://www.cantstoptheserenity.com/disclaimer/
Now I think changing "Serenity Day" to Sept. 30th would give us two BWAH!s per year which is better than one.

From here out it could be Joss' B-day for charity
and then "Serenity Day" (Sept. 30th) for AGITATION.
Sounds like a plan with not too much 'if' coming off it.

Of course this is worth discussing as it impacts the very thing we all hold the dearest here... our 'verse and whether or not there will be a continuation of it. It also impacts us as a group of fans and whether or not we get the job done or not.

We should have a vote.. we are a democracy aren't we? I mean it's a little hard to tell.. what with the I say and I want and I will rhetoric but last I looked we were an Independent bunch of cusses. I think we need to get past the saluting and the cowtowing and think about what is the best way to get the job done.

I liked the shiny compromise we came up with today... why can't we do that.

Posting here may seem a little deal, but even that requires diverting time and energy from something else.
From the start of the "project", I've always tried to suggest simpleness, the presence of a leader, direction and focus.

I speak for myself alone, but if this project requires THIS KIND of debate (people worried that we "steal" their precious date...and us actually caring and replying to such worries!!!!), then I'M TOTALLY out of the present discussion.
Sorry, this isn't really what I like to do with my free time.

Hope you guys can still bring on the project.
I'll check in now and then...
If it actually happens -someday- I'll be in, I guess.

EDIT: Another thing. I followed that link and I read what that guy wrote. I found it DISTURBING.
He basically says he's better than us because he does "good", while organizers of the "so called Serenity Day" are "selfish".
People like this should really wake up and get over themselves.
I'd have MANY things to "teach" him too, but I'll just hush.

I'm sorry to see the efforts slow/die because of those ramblings.

I say keep it June 23. I'm not quite understanding why b!X is so upset. It isn't as if buying the DVD is going to take up so much of a person's day that they won't be able to go to one of his screenings. I thought about trying to get a charity screening here in Omaha but to be honest I just don't think I would be able to convince a theater to do it. I was looking forward to being able to do something even though it won't be possible for me to go to a one of the charity screenings.

I vote for september 30th.

I have by no means read every post in this thread as it got a bit much, but I read enough to understand the conflict with the guy who "called" June 23rd first.I think a date should just be set, like NOW, and then we could all start rallying the troops. And yes, we need more time.

I don't know about the US, but here in Norway June 23rd is summer holiday for students and such, so a day in September might be better for getting more people onboard.

I´d say keep it on June 23rd.

I´m afraid, nothing good will come out of having 3 extra months. And why not have 2 separate events on June 23rd ?! This isn´t “Charity-Screening-Day”, it´s “Joss´ Birthday”, and we´re free to do what we want. Just forget about joining efforts and let´s do the thing.

Those 3 extra months can be used to great advantage. During this Summer there are multiple Sci-Fi conventions which are outstanding opportunities to promote the campaign. That time can be used to recruit many new fans to the 'verse... and there would be enough time for them also to recruit friends, family, co-workers, etc., by September 30th.

The aim of Serenity Day is to achieve truly impressive DVD sales... something a lot better than a sales spike driven by fans that frequent the message boards. But an impressive sales result needs more lead-in time to promote.

If all that people want to achieve is a nice sales spike for the DVD, then yeah, the extra time is irrelevant. But if this effort is part of a campaign to demonstrate a big enough audience to warrant considering more Serenity, then the sales figures need to be substantial... and that needs time and persistence to make happen. As a veteran of many a guerilla marketing endeavor, I know this to be true.

I don't think b!x is saying he's better than anyone else -he's just describing the differences between the two efforts. One is for charity and another is for more movies. Describing an action for "more movies" as selfish is simply technical semantics. It's not personal.

A "Serenity Day" and a "Can't Stop the Serenity" day just gives us two days instead of one.... how can that be bad?

Bottom line -let people do what they want. Even if it's whine about other people. Worrying about a "fracture" in the Browncoats is silly IMO. If anyone is TRULY concerned about how we look to the world, best thing to do is refrain from bickering.

WOW, I finally went to bed last night at about 3am, thinking this had been kinda sorted out.
ssc anyone?
why argue when we can do everything?

june 23 the start of the ssc.- charity screenings, spiked dvd sales what every you like to mark the day.

Summer- time for shindigs my friends, bbq, and conventions. show around the dvd you brough on the 23, advertise the 30th. advertise anything and everything.

sep 30th- incourage everyone you recurited in the summer to buy today, increased sales over the summer hopefully ending with annother spike. which as well as thank you letters to universal im sure there appreciate this too.

Could we all come together under this one SSC banner? I'd like to think so.
remember im not saying anyone cant do anything, im saying we can all do everything!

Why not spend summer in serenity?
From the 23 of april to the 30th of september we aim to misbehave!

Ah, if only it were that easy... Don't make the mistake I made, thinking we are dealing with yet another "shiny happy Browncoats holding hands"- kinda guy. But I don't wanna start throwing hwai. I got piles of good, well-weighed aerodynamic turds at my disposal, don't get me wrong. But hwai splatters, so I'll stash it away for later instead, should it become neccessary.
Okay, that metaphor was quite disgusting, thank me very much. But it's also very poetic.
Anyways, we should deal with the situation at hand and try to find the best way to make everyone happy, idiot cousins of the Browncoat family included.

They're going for June 23rd.. They're featured in this months Wired, and have posted on the .org site to say they plan to organise something.

So we're currently on course for having 3 different factions of the fandom having 3 different events competing for different publicity for different reasons...

This is *NOT* presenting the fandom in a good way to Universal. This is *NOT* going to be about a sequel, or charity, or anything at this rate. It's going to turn into bad press. Which is never what this is about.

At the moment, I'd say there's actually little to no in fighting from the people in charge, but the events are just going to damage things for everybody. Which wasn't the idea anybody had.

In fact, the whole point of this was to be united and organise every Browncoat in a big way.
You think the BRA people might be interested in the campaign idea and join with us? I'm saying "join WITH us", not "join us", mind you.

And is B!x throwing a fit because of this?

Your right, maybe we should settle this once and for all, im thinking something along the lines of opening up three new threads, one for the 23 one for the 30th and one for the ssc. if you post in that thread your name will be counted as a vote, obviously no matter how many times you post you only get one vote. give it 2 maybe 3 days, and count up the post.

something needs to be descided, voting seems the only fair way. when times up we know what we are doing, and can get beind it.
if somepeople dont agreed with what ever wins, well thats voting for you.

I will set up the threads if people like this idea, but not other wise at the moment theres two many threads all over the place and its just getting confusing.

anyone one feel to comment?

Oh i dont know, maybe this is just confusing the matter further, and im damn sure it doesnt need anymore of that.

Dunno, to be honest, what Bix feels -- or if anybody has tried contacting the BrowncoatsRiseAgain folks.

I've been reading some of the other topics here and some of the mud slinging here is pretty tragic. I put out a press release for charity screenings of the movie yesterday, which appeared on US TV... It's probably the most publicity the movie has had lately. It's positive publicity, reaching the masses. And what is going on here? There's name calling and hair pulling.

Uh-huh. Whateva, like. All I'll say is people need to calm down, and decide what is going to help sell the franchise to the outside. If there's any way I can help with that, I will.

Nobody owns June 23, nobody is a better fan than anyone else. Don't cave in to "save the fandom" crap, that is ridiculous. As if you suddenly have to follow a bunch of rules because you love the show and want to share it with others.

The negative, condencending attitude in that Whedonesque thread really annoys me. It's THE site for Joss news though, and Joss frequently posts there himself, which is damn cool. But the people who post there aren't better fans than anyone else, and they act like they're in charge of all Joss fan projects or something. I say, don't give in to that shit.

Glad to see you are still around 'Tash. We've missed seeing you post here.

I agree w/ 'Tash, why change the date just because a few fans on another site are whinging. Ok, so they planned something "first" on the same date. So what? They don't own the rights to organizing a fan driven campaign on June 23rd. No reason why we should change the date.

So the plan as I see it is now to keep June 23rd. Celebrate Serenity with everybody else just as we planned by buying DVDs, sending letters, going to screenings, and what not. But we continue from there. We use this as a kick off for a campaign that leads into a second celebration for Serenity on September 30th. Thats more parties for everyone and more chances to spread the word. This way everybody wins. We celebrate Serenity Day on June 23rd. We hold a Serenity Summer Campaign starting from that day on. We have the Big Damn Anniversary (or whatever we call it) on September 30th. That's my suggested course of action.

One goal.
One plan.
One army of Browncoats.

On June 23rd, we aim to misbehave.

What about if June 23rd became like a kind of dry run to test the effectiveness of the campaign? Keep campaigning to have folks buy DVDs on that date (Happy Birthday Joss!), afterward, we can see what the sales figures ended up being. Then the battle plan will become a lot clearer. Either the numbers will be really great (don't mean to be negative, but doubt that truly "awesome" numbers can happen in such a short amount of time), or the sales will be a lot less than all the great expectations were hoping for. But at least some "real world" results will be available.

Then folks can get geared up for Serenity Day on September 30th. Either with confidence that we're already coming from a strong place, or the cold, hard realization that there's still a whole lotta promotin' to be done.

If the "test run" thing sounds like a good idea, then it can be named something without the word "Serenity" in it. That will help delineate the DVD buying campaign from the Serenity Now/Equality Now charity screenings. Some peace can be achieved it the names of the different events really are "different".

Sometimes an army has to have a few skirmishes to test itself, then they can come back for the big battle even stronger.

11th Hour

P.S.

For anyone who hasn't done guerilla marketing, let me just say it can be a tough battle. It's fun because you're doing it with your browncoat buddies, but going out there into the big world, and talkin' up folk who won't initially have interest in what you have to say, is a lot to overcome. There's a lot of things out there trying to grab peoples' attention... takes a lot of persistence and good energy to make a dent.

You can get already existing fans excited about an idea, but getting other folk convinced is a different matter. It will take time to create the kind of effect fans want for Serenity Day.

Now this is an idea, and a very sound one too.

I agree that keeping June 23rd & using it as a test date is a very good idea. It will allow us to get the steps in place to organize this event & get our feet wet with implementing them. It will give us the experience we need to make a September 30th a big success.

I'm all for it.

Gossi,

Thank you for posting and for stating the obvious need to change the date. As you can see from reading this thread, there were folks yesterday that intelligently and with a great desire for peace came up with a solution in the Serenity Summer Campaign. I think that plan covers everything nicely and would hope that you would like it to.

I hope that the leader of this Serenity Day thing... Kaele.... can be persuaded to change this into the shiny solution for us all, versus the one day has to be no matter what militant movement that it is now.

Just you posting helped. Thank you!

For whatever it's worth, I think changing the Serenity Day event to the Summer Serenity Campaign culminating on September 30 is a great idea for the reasons that many others have mentioned: more time, differentiating the events, and being able to build a sustained, growth-oriented march to the 9/30 date.

I think this is an excellent proposal.

thats just shiney.

I think that for something like this to have come from the bitterness that was around is something to be proud of.

I am very proud of us, Purplepebble... yesterday was a study in coming together and wanting to find a good solution and then when it seemed we had THIS solution, folks threw a party.. it was fun. My heads still a little fuzzy with that virtual Irish creme. Heh.

But we still have to get the leader of the Serenity Day behind this idea fully... she is still posting that she will do June 23rd, she sort of co-opted the Serenity Summer Campaign and said she liked it, but she also said a lot of stuff about an army and attacking and defending and such and I don't know how that figures into this plan.

I hope she sees this and sees that it will be good for us all...by all, I mean literally us all.

i can't understand all the hullabaloo here. joss' bd is the 23rd. some people are celebrating it by having screenings. people who can't organize screenings are buying the dvd's and donating them to various organizations. and some people want to do it again in sept. sounds great to me. not everyone can make a screening, not everyone can afford to buy dvd's. you do what you can, and be thankful someone has the skills to organize whichever venue you want to participate in. so buy the dvd, or go to a screening, or do both.

My vote is for whatever Kaele decides. Period. What I have to say next is for 11th Hour. On one of your 12 or more posts you chastise someone for being combative. Let's review some of your finer quotes throughout this whole thread.

1. That was you trying to be polite? Dude, needs work.

2. Your post misses a lot of the points

3. An informed opinion is a lot more valuable to a discussion

4. Are Browncoats so fragile and easily discouraged that a date change will collapse the environment?

5. The whole army metaphor is getting a little creepifying here.

6. Everyone, who is this everyone of whom you speak?

7. You forgot the part where the sky was falling.

8. There's just so much "I" in those statements.

9. Why is it a big deal to revise a date on a poster?

10. And since this thread is a place to vote.

11. And I also don't want to expend more energy explaining what has already been posted.

Okay. When you speak like this but accuse others of being combative you look kinda silly (at least to me). And for not wanting to expend more energy explaining, you posted a million times! Hello! My answer to your question in #4 is: Ask B!X on Whedonesque. As for #9 - Some people don't have all the free time you seem to have. They have a family and responsibilities outside of this little venture. So don't be so critical. Cause that was all I got out of your posts. That kind of tone would be more appreciated on Whedonesque. Yes I'm pissed. Seems like all the big guns are a little whiny. As you mentioned this is a place to vote (although I myself have now kinda gotten off the beaten path). Please feel free to flame me.

FollowMal,

I think the Serenity Summer Campaign is a great idea. I think we should be working together as browncoats to promote Serenity & insure a future, moreso than worrying about supporting this team or that team, this individual, or that individual.

The problem here with this "it was my idea first" mentality is that it is causing a division in the ranks, one we can not afford. We should ALL be focused on pushing the DVD & boosting sales. It doesn't matter whose idea it was or who was where first and focusing on those things takes our energies away from what is important, boosting the sales of the BDM DVD.

Me personally, I don't care what day the campaign is, how long it is, etc. I am out here everyday talking it up & pushing it. Sure, I will assist the campaign any way I can & will redouble my efforts during an organized push by the fanbase. I like 11th Hour's idea & am fully behind it. I say let's drop the arguing over who came up w/ what & just do what needs to be done.

Keep flyin'!

(Please don't take the tone as harsh FollowMal as it is not meant to be. I am just over all the arguing and moaning. I want to see us focus on promoting the DVD.)

Yeah....
uh....
I was thinking it has been solved... and oh boy.
Anyways in terms of the "infighting"... this is not much infighting... its a debate.. especially from my point of view. Hell if you want to see infighting see me over at whedonesque:P... not the greatest thing ever, trsut me..

Anyway yeah...
so.... I see nothing wrong with having a serenity day.... kicking off a serenity campaign, ending in the big damn anniversary(big darn anniversay if people dont like the damn).

So yeah... buy the dvds june 23rd, promote promote, have fun get people to check out the movie and tv in the cons...maybe get the actors to say a word or two, etc... and then buy the dvds again(for those who can afford it), on Sept 30th. OH and all htose extra dvds.. give to relatives friends, and libraries and the troops...

So I see 3 ways to participate in this campaign:

1) for people who want only june 23rd, go ahead knock yourself out...
2) for people who want only sept 30th, go ahead knock yourself out
3) for people who are impatient go for june 23rd... get all buzzed up...and then hey lets do it again , go for Spet 30th.

I am in the 3rd camp.

Btw.... I dunno where people got such an insane idea... but participating in the Serenity Summer camapign does NOT mean you boycott, or not participate in the charity screenings.
I am an organizer of one of the charity screenings and I plan to participate in Serenity Campaign too. And if you are not near a charity screening, then please may I recommend to get a shindig together on June 23rd, and collect money and send to charity. I am sure Joss would even appreciate that too.

If people participate in the two campaigns (separate...different....), then it will be great! Its even better.

Prakash

I thought the purpose of this thread was to find a plan that makes sense to the most people. It seemed like we were doing exactly that, and then the leader comes in and says that our votes mean nothing. Don't know about the rest of you, but that does not sit well with me.

Livlass, I do appreciate that there are people willing to take the time to organize these events, but I do not like being told to fall in line just because someone is in a position of power. Where are the convincing arguments for doing this in June? I've yet to hear one. If Kaele is acting like our opinions don't matter, I'd like to hear why. I might be channeling my teenager here, but I'm too ornery to do something I don't agree with just because someone says so.

This is beside the point, and it is a distraction in this thread (is that the point?), but I don't get why we need an army to "defend" Browncoats and "attack" anything. Are the Trekkies declaring war on us? There are power dynamics at work here that are a mite disturbing.

Saying there is no fighting between the leaders of the Serenity Now screenings and the Serenity Day June 23rd camp is a real bit of denial in action. There might be emails going back and forth and there might not be name calling, but no one can tell me that there is not a lot of hostility there. I ain't dumb. Don't tell me that I'm not seeing what is so plain before my very eyes.

Politics aren't my thing, and it's too bad that the Serenity Now guy is so hostile but that's the way it is. He might not be so friendly, but he has lots of valid points. There's a lot of damage to be done by insisting on keeping June 23rd, and it seems clear from this thread that a lot of experienced people who know what they are talking about don't think that's in the best interest of Serenity Day or Browncoats at large.

I'm happy to follow if the leader has the best plan and the best interest in mind. I just ain't so sure that this is what's going on here.

Hi.
Ok Servantofkushial,...I dont want to add to the "infighting"... but 11thHour has been an supporter of this movement, even if she disagrees, with how some things have been deicded or done. She is allowed to have her opinions, and in terms of her "attitude", well I guess I just see more exasperation.

Instead of "attacking" others lets just focus on the campaign, whether its june 23rd, sept 30th , or both or whatever, you pick or decide.

We need as many volunteers and helpers as possible, and while 11th Hour has not agreed with some of the things said here at least she supports it. Compared to some of the comments said by other people, she has been quite positive. We need all the help we can get.

So people please... lets not criticize each other, lets do what we can to get this thing asuccess.

Hi Kaele,
I suggest you tally the votes here. If indeed people are voting for June 23rd, then go for it. We are all a part of this campaign, and while I realize that's a lot of cooks over one pot, voting is the best way to clarify the issue. Everyone gets a say, and then they can't complain if the vote comes down to June 23rd in the end. And if people decide on September 30th, then they must have good reason to do so.

Now, I heard mention of another vote that some people were upset about - I missed it entirely so I don't really know. But so many people have posted in this thread, I really think it would be a good idea to listen to what they have to say.

What do you say? Can we work this out?

Hi to you Kurya! As I stated in a different thread, I beleive people are entitled to their opinions. I don't really care if 11th Hour agrees or disagrees with what's decided or done.
My prob was the tone. As for attitude, it's a matter of perception. And I apologize for being all defensive in my previous post im just aggravated. But, my opinion counts too, even if I am not as revered as 11. So, that being said, I understand that my post didn't really help anything. I really don't want to fight with everyone, I just didn't appreciate how she kept bugging on one particular member, so like a child, I called it out. It was rude of me.

P/S- Only getting about 5 hrs sleep for the past couple weeks so I am WAY more edgy and confrontational than I normally am.

My sentiments exactly.
We were NOT the ones to start the issue.
It's them who made an issue of it.
I didn't like the attitude, I don't like people who tells me what I should do/think in that way.
The project was started independently and with enthusiasm, and we had every right to keep it going that way.
It's no good that we "bow" to them, I think I won't even take part in the event anymore.

I certainly am a browncoat, but first I am a proud and free mind.
I would NEVER have changed the date.

Hey, ServantofKushiel, thanks for taking so much time to compile a list of my "greatest hits"!

Just a couple of notes, on #11, could you please correct the apostrophe? Don't want folks to think I can't type don't! Oh, and on #8, the quotes around the "I" do make a difference in the meaning of that sentence... so if you have the chance, maybe fix that one too? Thanks.

There's some dropping of italics, a spelling error, and minor stuff on a couple of the other quotes, but no biggie.

Keep up the shiny work!

SimonF

Shiny to meet you! Sorry I didn't know who you are. Be careful with my sway now, its been through the ringer.

I took no offense at YOUR posintgs or anyone elses other than HE WHO SHALL NOT BE NAMED. (but I will not go into that here)

I think the point that everyone seems to be missing is that I don't think the intention was ever to sell a bunch of videos and expect a movie. I think the intention was to sell a bunch of videos and raise Awareness of all things Serenity/Firefly. My impression of the Browncoat 'verse is that you have to be pretty intelligent to be here. No one is naive enough to think that a major corporation is going to dump 40 million into a pot for a movie, just cause we said so - However, I think a number of us DO believe that if we sell enough DVD's on ONE day (hang on guys let me finish) to get the attention of the media world - that will in turn lead to the attention of the world at large - attention that will mean more and more lovers of the verse, followers of the Master Joss, droolers of the Malcolm (insert Inara, Simon, etc at will) - you get my drift. That attention would then lead to more and more dvd sells which EVENTUALLY, with the grace of HE/SHE/IT to which the collective you, do or do not pray, would lead to Universal saying - hey wait a minute! We could make even a straight to video dvd and they would come!

I am not sure why such a group of intelligent, shiny, erudite people can't just all agree to disagree and then LET IT GO. Buy on the 23, buy on the 30th, hold as many SHINDIGS as you want, crimeys - you could do all the above every damn day - just DO something and stop carping on each other.

With the intelligence in this group of people, we could spend the rest of the millenium finding more erudite ways of saying "up yours" then all the stars the night sky could show us.

I could post all sorts of negativeity about HWSNBN - but, I would rather eat virtual strawberries, sniff my turnippy coat (sorry FollowMal u ain't gettin it back) and read how one of us drives past cars that are emitting too much exhaust because they are running without core containment and screams REAVERS!

Sorry about the long winded post. I have just been getting whiplash trying to keep up with all the threads.

So read my signature. Browncoats unite! Girls Rule! Boys like to think they let us! Yes Virgina, there is a Santa Claus! sorry.....

I think we're in serious trouble if we can't find a solution that works for the entire fandom.

Has Kaele posted? Where is she?

I have no problem with making June 23rd the SerenityNow/Equality Now day, and using it to kick off a Serenity Summer culminating in a mass buy on Sept 30th.

(EQUALITY NOW is an important cause. It needs our support- Period. And I think there's more that we can do than charity screenings that a majority of us can't participate in for a variety of reasons.)

Thank you to the folks from Whedonesque & SerenityMovie who've come over to to help find solutions. I appreciate it!

I've said from the beginning that we need the entire fandom onboard for this to work, and I hold to that.

A good point to bring up because this may be what is causing some confusion, and thus the heated debates, about how to plan the campaign. If the main focus was for fans to buy a lot of DVDs on a certain day as a sign of support, then that's easy... nice and simple... no big expectations, just a nice show of support... and certainly not anything for everyone to get in a fuss about!

However, the website for Serenity Day does in fact make a proclamation that the purpose is to prove to Universal to continue Serenity. Here is the statement from the website:
_________________________________________

CALLING ALL BROWNCOATS

On June 23, we aim to misbehave.

Serenity and Firefly are worth fighting for, and we will show our numbers by purchasing Serenity on June 23 en mass, proving to Universal that Serenity deserves to keep flying.
Join us, and we can do the impossible again.

http://www.serenityday.org/
_________________________________________

(Btw, "en mass" is misspelled on the website... should be "en masse". We need to look professional folks!)

A declaration like that sets up a whole different set of expectations, and pressure. If the fans are gonna say this is to show awesome enough numbers to prove to Universal that a sequel is warranted, then that kind of campaign needs time and organization.

So, there needs to be some clarity. A friendly, fan DVD buying day (without big proclamations of sequel-hood to Universal), doesn't have any pressure, and doesn't have to be so much fuss.

But a big splashy, fan show of support with awesome numbers, does need time and planning... like, for instance, setting that day for September 30th.

Maybe people are arguing about two different purposes, and keep getting them crossed?

Good catch! I didn't see that, if I did read it, it is with those brain cells I keep misplacing.

I think then we do need to clarify. If we ARE going for a major push - then I will have to agree with some of the things I have read. If that is the case, then we need to be DAMN SURE that we have the numbers. It means a HUGE feat of planning and mobilazation. It means weeks, maybe months of reaching out to every member of this forum as well as all the others out there and getting a universal if not unanimous decision on a date.

The million man march didn't happen in a day, and although this is not a political venture, thats the kind of planning that would be needed.

I say, go for raising awareness. Don't build us all up to look foolish we the numbers don't happen.

But that is just me.

I will go with the flow.

I guess we could manage a few couple of ten thousand DVDs, if we go with the september date for buying and use the Summer campaign wisely.
Then there'll be a slight aftershock come the holidays.
If we go with the June date, with all the confusion going on, the bickering and boycotting, and the time we lost arguing about this hwai, we'll get 10000, tops. And then people will lose interest because they're dissappointed that there were so few of us and we didn't even really get noticed, and morale will go to hell, and with it the whole plan, and THAT, more people will know than knew of the plan itself.
Then newbies will come and wanna do it again, and better, and we'll be all like "Isn't gonna work, anyways.".
SEPTEMBER, GORRAMMIT!

Moving the date isn't about B!x anymore, it's about reassessing the situation and do what's best for everyone - and for our cause, september is best.
We CAN manage 40000+ DVDs bought in september, I guess, but I'm throwing figures around. I alone am gonna buy 5 copies that day. For every one that buys five, we'll have five that buy one.
But for this to work, we need ONE day, and EVERY Browncoat we can reach, and lots of new converts from the Summer Campaign would be nice, of course.
The one day, one army thing didn't come out of nowhere - it was the very IDEA behind Serenity Day.

Serenity Summer Campaign for teh win!1!!

I plan on celebrating twice, probably wearing my brown coat and telling people about it on June 20 (the last day of school here) and then buying the DVD on June 23. I believe that a lot of people have begun to plan (I know I have) around June 23, and I don't hink it would be wise to change.

One day.
One mission.
One army of Browncoats.

On June 23rd, we aim to misbehave.

But it's not too late to change, and we would greatly benefit from it. If people managed to organise their lives around June 23rd in a matter of days, they should be able to unmanage and focus on the bigger goal and get excited about a summer of fun, with one hell of a firework sale to top it off and to go into the holiday season.
Woohoo!

And the first annual after the premiere of Serenity makes more sense as a symbolic day, too.

Okay, as the originator of the "sway" comment, an explanation (as I tend to put typing fast ahead of any sort of thinking--not always as good substitute as you'd think).

When I said "sway", I meant "power beyond anything any human has dreamed or desired"--wait, slash that. What I meant is that these guys help run two of the biggest websites known to the Firefly/Serenity fandom, and reaching out to them can only be helpful. I certainly did not mean to imply that either is more important then any other fan. Everyone knows that I'm the most important fan, sillies.

I hope she sees this and sees that it will be good for us all...by all, I mean literally us all.

"You hold. Hold 'til I get back." Mal

I certainly hope so. I didn't much care to hear that our votes are counting for nothing. Unless you're the Shrub, you don't get to veto the rest of us. This is suppose to be a 'one person one vote' deal, and the mice in your pockets don't count.

I'm gonna go look at the other threads as this is the first I've seen today having just got home. Then I'm goin' back to the party...not so much to celebrate, but to escape the arguing. I don't mind debates, they're interesting, entertaining and educational. What I don't care much for is the belittling of folks. That's what got me riled.

Oh, and for the record...I like the compromise of the SSC. The ideas and reasons for it that I've seen presented sounded like a good plan to me, so I'm changin' my earlier vote to that.

I believe a lot of people are going with june 23rd becuase it's sooner and they're excited. It's like telling the kids we're going to chuck e' cheese on the way home and then open your wallet and tell them to wait untill payday :)

This is just a first pass at a "teaser" poster for Serenity Day. The tag line can be changed of course. The poster text can also be updated as September 30th draws closer... then more specific info can be added regarding the DVD buying campaign... but teaser posters/flyers are a good way to start building interest.

Again, only offered as a suggestion...

Yes, I made time to revise one of my guerilla marketing posters, but just so folks know... it's not because I have nothing else to do with my time! I just care a lot, maybe too much, about promoting Firefly and Serenity... so I other things in my life that need doin' get delayed...

Yes, i agree. And as someone who does check out different boards, i am a little confused as to why everyone would not be happy to work together...and hopefully that is indeed the case. After all, fans of Joe's work should share a common bond, the appreciation of what Weldon has given us all - and not just a 'chosen' few....

In the end, I'm in favor of whatever needs to be done to get a shot at another movie - I'm not totally unaware of how the entertainment bidniz works... Sweet, muscular Joss... your talent for counting votes the way you want things to go is darn near miraculous!

FYI, the votes for Serenity Day on September 30th outnumber the June 23rd votes more than 2 to 1!!!

For the sake of honesty and respecting the voices of the people who voted, below is an overview of the votes on this thread. Some names have an excerpt from the associated post. The votes which were definite, or had a strong preference for a particular day, were placed under that date.

PLEASE NOTE: Many of the people voting for a specific "Serenity Day" still expressed an interest in having a Summer long campaign, starting with June 23rd and concluding on September 30th.

However...

The main goal of this particular thread and vote was to pick which date would be the big DVD buying push, and be called "Serenity Day"... so that's where the emphasis of this voting compilation has been placed.

You're welcome!

Took a long time to compile that overview, but what's right is right. People were expressing what they wanted... that has to be respected.

The thread was started so we could vote and have our voices heard. It was a way to make sure that the plan was a reflection of the majority of the fans. The only way the plan can achieve the greatest success is one that has the backing of the most people.

And everyone was so happy with the result that they started a party thread!

I can certainly can change the category of your vote. However, there was a certain "looseness" in the way people were voting. For instance, I also agree that buying DVDs on June 23rd is a good idea, but have September 30th be Serenity Day... so I put myself in the September 30th category.

To help explain the categories:

• The folks under the September 30th date are saying that's the date for the big DVD push, and that day will be called "Serenity Day"... but it's not saying that we also can't do something on June 23rd.

• The folks under "Both" don't have a preference which date is the big DVD sales push, or which day will be called "Serenity Day".

Hope that helps clear up the meaning of the categories. I'll revise my post so other people won't get confused... at least I hope they won't get confused.

So, just let me know which category fits your preferences best and I'll revise the list if needed.

Thanks!

11th

Because if i try to say"no dont do that"... then they will get antsy and tell me to sod off. Its only the first thing in the campaign anyways.

11th and Kaele - you 2 need to come together and not slag each other with votes and rhetoric. I don't care how many votes there are or how accurately they are counted... I remember how the domain name "fireflyday.com" won in a landslide 155 to 34, but it didn't actually win, it got rolled over for other names, "the people have spoken and they're wrong." Fansite voting has proven unreliable. And these votes are such a small percentage of the users here, a quick tally, about 50 total votes representing 20,000 users?! More important than the voting... you need to get together, lock yourselves in an e-mail room and get a consensus, a plan that serves both dates. You 2 are clearly the guiding forces behind both dates - come together and do us all proud, pull something positive out of this division - please!

Fireflyday was decided against in the end because it did not, in practicality, reflect goals that we were trying to achieve.

Democracy has to be balanced with common sense.
Common sense would dictate not doing something that's going to cause a rift between the various fandoms, and that's exactly what we're headed into.

(Yes, it recieved the landslide of votes on the website, but not here on the board, oddly enough. I also suspect that there were people using multiple votes on the website.)

"Slag"? I do admit to calling Kaele on things she's said in her posts that were not correct. Someone in the position of leader is held to a higher level of conduct, because their actions have a greater affect on people.

Kaele posted a vote tally that was obviously wrong, and was presented as yet another way to proceed with the date she wants.

This thread was created to have a vote... you even voted in it. Now that the count is in, and the date that you didn't vote for is the majority, you are questioning its usefulness.

Quote:

I don't care how many votes there are or how accurately they are counted...

Well, that's unfortunate.

I remember how the domain name "fireflyday.com" won in a landslide 155 to 34, but it didn't actually win, it got rolled over for other names, "the people have spoken and they're wrong." Fansite voting has proven unreliable.

The voting on that website was anonymous, and it's hard to tell if there were any controls to prevent the same people from voting more than once. That is a pretty unreliable way to vote.

But the voting on this thread had peoples' names and reasons for voting... and mutliple votes are avoided. This thread is more than straight votes, it's people discussing the subject and working things out.

Quote:

And these votes are such a small percentage of the users here, a quick tally, about 50 total votes representing 20,000 users?!

Are you talking about the number of users who post every day, or are you looking at the total number of people who have registered on this site since it began... FOUR years ago? Many times people register, post a little, and then never come back.

The voting on this thread involved the people who care most deeply about the campaign... that's what's important.

Quote:

More important than the voting... you need to get together, lock yourselves in an e-mail room and get a consensus, a plan that serves both dates. You 2 are clearly the guiding forces behind both dates - come together and do us all proud, pull something positive out of this division - please!

I believe the plan does deserve both dates. But the dilemma is that kaele wants June 23rd to be Serenity Day and the big DVD buying extravaganza... and I firmly believe that the big DVD buying extravaganza needs more time to achieve the numbers that the fans need to make a truly big impression. My vote is that Serenity Day needs to be September 30th.

This is the issue that's the main sticking point... that and the way kaele wants the browncoat army to also be on hand to "attack"!

I throw my hat to Sept. 30.

After reading all the arguments, Sept 30 makes more sense. We are not so far into this that adjustments can't be made.

One summer.
One mission.
One army of Browncoats.
Starting June 23rd, we aim to misbehave.

I appreciate it.

And I want to add my own count, perhaps not as neatly as you since I'm not so artistically inclined.

I counted 18 for the 23rd.

and 30 for the compromise

Hey, I'm glad you counted too!

Our counts are pretty close... the differences may be because I made extra categories. I was trying to show a bit more personalization to the votes.

So I went back and moved some votes around to streamline, and hopefully, make the categories clearer. Our counts are still pretty darn close! (The votes in the September 30th category still includes folks who like the compromise idea.)

Again, the vote count was an endeavor to stay with the intention of the thread... to vote for which day would be Serenity Day.

Though I was starting to see that some of the people who voted for June 23rd didn't seem to express that they understood that Serenity Day is more than just a DVD sales spike campaign... it's meant to be big enough to impress a studio. It's hard to tell how well informed the votes are... then one wonders if the vote would change if they had more understanding of the issue at hand?

Anyway, most folks seem to really like marking both days with a show of buying support... it's just working out which day is gonna be the BIG day.

11th

P.S.

Succatash - loved your post!

Just wanted folks to know his joke was made before I revised the list, so his numbers are a little different. I moved some "both days" folks to the 23rd, and via email I discovered that one of the "Miscellaneous" people actually was a 30th vote.

Nope. I have no interest in taking this over.

However, I do care about how Firefly/Serenity is promoted. I've worked at a TV Network, The WB, during the heyday of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I saw first hand the attitude that studio executives have toward fan endeavors. I saw the look in their eyes when they read heartfelt, passionate fan letters... letters that to a fan may have made perfect sense and were sincere, but they were a joke to the execs. A well intentioned, but naive fan endeavor, will not improve the image of the Browncoats in the eyes of a major entertainment conglomerate.

I don't want our fandom to be embarrassed.

Fans may not realize how their activities, and how they present their promotions, look to a studio. Since Serenity Day is being organized as more than just fans doing a buying push... it's being set up with big expectations and being aimed right at Universal for its attention... and hoped for respect.

I honestly feel that June 23rd is too soon to be the big "we're gonna show Universal what we can do" day. If all kinds of delcarations of achieving great things are made beforehand, I dread that a lackluster sales performance will turn around and hurt our fandom.

We're talkin' about impressing a major studio here. They're impressed by big, BIG sales figures. Those kinds of sales need time to nurture and grow. So yeah, I'm fighting for September 30th. I also feel strongly that it's the right day to designate as "Serenity Day". That's when the big premiere for the general release of Serenity happened... and right there at Universal Studios. Joss was there, the BDHs were there, the press, and HUNDREDS of cheering, deliriously happy Browncoats! It was an amazing day and night. THAT was Serenity Day.

I'm here fighting for what I believe is the best thing for Firefly/Serenity... and I've been doing this for over 3 and half years. It's not about taking over... it's about doing what's right.

And I do this out of love... fierce love.

So far I have the impression that 11th Hour doesn't want to lead, she wants to help. I think she wanted to sit this one out, but things are going in a bad direction, and she's trying to help sort it out.
And she does have a point... I haven't had the time for a recount on this thread, but Sept 30th does clearly seem to win, so I wonder how Kaele ended up with her figures.
So please don't give 11th Hour shit because she's trying to be CONSTRUCTIVE and HELP. People yelling "IT'S A RUTTIN' COUP!" is less constructive criticism, Piz.
So when Kaele interprets the vote results in an omnious way, it's fine by you, but if a veteran corrects her and goes out of her way to look through this thread and makes a list with who voted for what, you step up and attack her?
I'd like to add that I knew none of the people on here before I joined 3 weeks ago, so I have no ties to anyone and know next to nothing about them.
I did not get the impression, however, that 11th Hour is a power hungry maniac who's been deceiving people on here for years, just waiting for her big opportunity to enslave us. If she had wanted the lead, she would have said so back then. And probably have gotten it.
Or is there some dark, terrible secret from her past that I don't know about?

So chiiiiiiiill, Piz.

Btw, I don't care who leads this thing, as a matter of fact, as long as they're doing a good job.

Add me to the Sept. 30th list.

Many people are stressing how much better that date is outside of the whole SN/EN issue, and I agree.

But I want to step up and say that I agree with b!X on the June 23rd thing, and I want to explain why, since so many people have expressed a non-understanding of his discontent.

B!X has a crappy bedside manner. He always has. (Diz was spot-on referring to 'tangles' with him.) But... he is an artist. He puts a thematic integrity into his work that transcends the seemingly mundane 'purpose' of his projects, and I respect and admire his ability to do so. Like any artist, he will fight to preserve that which he has crafted. To an extent, it is his 'elitism', his 'egotism' which so many are decrying, that allows him to stick with his vision and create something...more.

I don't begrudge him wishing to maintain that vision. The Serenity Day slogan appears to value that same kind of integrity: "One day." "One mission." "One Browncoat Army." First, how does that jive with two days, seperate missions, and multiple factions of Browncoats? Is that really what Serenity Day wants? Second, with that kind of slogan, and that date, Serenity Day ads are inherently co-opting the SN/EN. It says so right there!

The SN/EN screenings have a different theme, a different purpose, and a different goal than Serenity Day. Not necessarily better, not more important, just different. Different enough that I can't see them co-existing on the same day without taking away from both.

It's like if you had one stage, and three bands playing different music at the same time. What may be beautiful and affecting individually, becomes nothing more than offensive noise together. The solution isn't play louder than the other band, it's wait your turn and coordinate with the other players so that everyone can enjoy the music.

I agree for the most part, although I'm not into cooky artists (and I meet quite a few in my line of work). I study illustration (well, since I already have been make a living from doing comics and illustrations and such for 4 years now, I kinda haven't been attending university that often, but technically, I'm a student), and there's a group of artsy comic book artists. They frown upon mainstream and commercialism and want to express themselves through their weird ass comics.
So they selfpublished a comic book with their works, and then complained that nobody wanted to read it.
So B!x should ask himself if SN/EN is about charity or his desire to express himself.
Don't get me wrong, I like arts, but artists are a strenuous bunch.
What you just said underlines the picture I have of him, just now I have a possible reason for his behaviour. I now think trying to talk to him is even less useful. But this isn't about him anymore.

Anyways, I nevertheless totally agree that the buying frenzy should be on sept 30th, Serenity Day.

The slogan is useless now, anyways, since people seem to like the Serenity Summer Campaign idea, and so do I, and the "one army" thing would be a joke if we would chose the June date. Things like that would have been negotiale, though, if B!x is not interested in negotiating.

We can avoid this trouble altogether if we go with the sept 30th date, which is better for all manner of reasons which I'm not gonna repeat here again, anyways.

NoSadSeven, there should be a law requiring you post online more often (and yes, I'm being serious).

I don't believe 11th Hour has any intention of taking over this effort, and as much as I've posted about it (okay, not that much) I wouldn't want to take it over either.

Fan campaigns are massive amounts of effort, and very time consuming. I should know - I've done many with Firefly/Serenity.

That said, there's absolutely no harm in offering advice on these things.

Here's a realistic take on things:

If you want to show Universal the fan base can be powerful enough to make another motion picture viable (which is one of the project goals on the website), you need a vast, vast fan movement. At the moment, there's probably a few hundred people on Fireflyfans aware of the effort. That's about 0.05% of the amount of people aware of the project that you'd need to show Universal an impact...

Fixing that will take a long time, to make everybody aware, and convince people to get involved.

By saying this, do I want to take over said project? Nope. Again with the massive amounts of time and effort it'll require. It's clear from the reactions outside of this site that -- if the basic idea is pitched -- people bork at the idea. With more explaination, people will probably get on board. Actually getting that message out is going to take a long time. Events running through the summer is probably a good way to raise general awareness of the project.

With anything like this, people get protective of both the show/movie and the fandom. If people don't know who you are, they won't trust you. It's as simple as that - I learnt that the hard way repeatedly over 2005.

Regarding September 30th, I've no plans for that date now. Anything I'd do would use another date (as I can guarentee other people will try to use that date later down the line - that'll be a fun day).
