Here's another actors thread you can jump onto. Whose is a celebrity (be it actor, singer, figure in the public eye, etc.) whose fame you can't understand. Someone who when you see, you think to yourself "Why the Hell are they famous."

I know I can go with the obvious ones, but for me, one person whose popularity I can't understand is Ryan Reynolds. Why the Hell is this guy considered funny. I see him in a movie and I can only think to myself that he's kind of a poor man's Jason Lee. If you look closely, Jason and Ryan have a lot of the same characteristics. The same verbal tics and body language and such. But Lee just have that extra thing. That little bit of subversive attitude that makes him who he is. He plays dicks, but you can't help but like them.

On the other hand, when Ryan plays a dick, he's a dick and no amount of mugging or whatever the Hell he does can change that.

Please tell me I'm not alone in this.

So whose a celebrity whose fame mystifies you?

I'm afraid I'm gonna have to jump on the Paris Hilton bandwagon here. That is the first person who lept to mind when this was posted.

Then Britney Spears is a close second.

And for me.. Jessica Simpson is third.

Not to be totally female-centric in my answer too, Tom Cruise gets my vote. Sorry, just don't see it, nuh uh.

Simon Cowell.

Odious, noxious, superfluous little man.

His fame is based entirely on sitting ther with his trousers cutting off his brething at the neck, insulting people too damn stupid and pathetic for it to be anything but shameful that a grown man has nothing better to do. His insults ain't even entertaining, funny or witty. My 5 year old niece can make more cutting remarks than he does. (not that she feels the need to make herself look superior to the cretins that audition for shows like that by making fun of them)

And lets face it, has the music he's introduced to the world made it a better place by even one iota?

oh, he also stands as living testament to the shameful fact that some women will anything with a bit of money and 'power'.

oh, yeah, and Paris Hilton. Oxygen Thief.

Not to make this thread totally negative (I was aiming for slightly funny), I'd like to say the obvious in that most of our pop culture is a celebration of mediocrity. Now, the good news it that sooner or later, people realize said mediocrity and give them their cultural walking papers. Time is normally the best judge of that.

But all I gotta say is this. If this is a society where true talent is rewarded and idolized, then the paparrazzi would have spilt more ink over the nuptuals and new baby of Maggie Gyllenhall and Peter Sarsgaard than fucking Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes. Over two people who can not only act but act incredibly well. Whose names are synonymous with quality.

oh, credit to dan brown though. His writing may suck and his work may be hanging around like a fart in a spacesuit, but he has got the church and all these historians and academics so riled up and self righteously flustered over one little paperback bit of fluf that every time I see one of them, I just have to laugh my little ass off.

I'm sorry, I did aim for humor, but I find It very hard to see the funny when it come to Mr Highpants.

Apart from his hair - road kill, its the worse hair since donald trump. You just want to offer both of them (the 'do's) some food and water. That makes me giggle.

the last one was Catherine Zeta Jones. I've never found her particularly remarkable, looks or talent or other wise (oh she's good looking, but blandly so) she only seened to make it major league when she started boinking the old dude.

Have you seen the Pink vidoe for 'stupid girls' thats funny.

Though what you were saying misses the point very slightly. These people are all famouse, the press go after them and their babys, because the 'celebs' are attention whores and make it really easy for them. Actors like Maggie are very private about their lives basically cause beyond the exhibitionism inherant in almost all actors, they are normal people. They go to premiers and press junkets as part of their jobs, then they go home and be normal.

Paris Hilton doesn't have a job, Simon cowells was nearly so interesting, Toms was in decline (after all the scientology madness dented his popularity) (mind you, he hasn't really helped that, but TomKat got him through to the opening of MI:3) so being papped is pretty much all they have.We set up a culture where useless oiks hang around like the aformentioned farts because the people we are really interested in don't whore themselves out for us, and the human mind thrives on new information and gossip.

Though whoever said tom and brad were crap - one exception - i liked them both in Interview (Kirsten acted them out of the room, but they were still good in their own right) and both of them used to be the very epitome of 'star quality' - they were there when that was what was needed.

99.9% of all UK 'celebrities'.

Jordan, Chantelle, Jodie Marsh, Tara P-T, Simon Cowell, Every 'big brother' retard, Chris Martin, Kerry Katona, etc... etc... etc...

The whole concept of celebrity completely astounds me. I mean, Jade Goody became famous for being an idiot on big-brother. She didn't even win but then she did celebrity wife swap and now Jeff Brazier as an extention is apparantly a celebrity... They broke up... He doesn't have a job... The only TV he's done is on celebrity versions of reality shows... How does that work???

Ah, UK Celebs. The inherent contradiction in terms says it all, really.

Jodie Marsh. Wow. Memorable Self-Destruct horror in front of literally dozens of Big Brother viewers.

Baffling, given her line of work. I assume you are supposed to look at her body, but I don't mind admitting that I was utterly transfixed by her nose.

I'm going to chime in here with a few people who aren't that big any more but who used to be huge. I'm widening the topic to anyone whose celebrity has ever baffled you.

Kevin Costner. I just never understood it. How did this man win any Oscars. Not only can he not act, he can't even do an english accent, not of any kind (his Robin Hood had me gagging).

Hillary Duff. Thank god she seems to have fallen of the face of the Earth into those stupid "liquid ice" commercials. Mediocre singer, mediocre actress, unmemorable cookie cutter barbie doll. Her fame really upset me and made me fear for humanity. For that matter, so do most of the most of the folks named on this thread.

Jerry Seinfeld. I'm sure that many people will disagree with me and I'm not looking to start an argument, but I never found him or his show to be funny. More like painfully stupid and often boring.

William Hung.
...
...
...
Just why! This one actually made me want to stab someone in the face. What I could never figure out was why he was singled out to laugh at. Yes he was horrible and faintly amusing in a sad, disturbing kind of way. But so are a lot of the people that try out for that show. From what I've seen of American Idol (which isn't much) he wasn't anything special as far as the horrid and the embarassing go. Now we're not only celebrating mediocre talent but mediocre suckage as well. What does that say about our culture?

I really don't get Kate Hudson at all. How to lose a guy in 10 days was ridiculously dumb. I guess there was Almost Famous, which was a good film, but not because of her. I really wouldn't have minded another actress in the role at all. Kirsten Dunst was considered, and I think she would have been much better.

Tom Cruise. I don't like him, I just don't like him. Even before it was popular to not like him, I didn't like him. I don't like Top Gun. Risky Bussiness annoys me. Arrg. I hate Tom Cruise.

The three that have puzzled me the longest, nearly 20 years are...

Michael Douglas. ewwwwwwww, sleezy, oily scuzball with no chin.

C. Thomas Howell. Why? There's nothing even vaguely interesting or talented or good looking about that lump of mashed potatoes.

Tom Cruise. Midgets don't get to save the world unless you're shooting them out of a cannon *at* the bad guy.

As for more recent craptastic vapid losers:

Paris Hilton. Look at me, I'm a silver spoon whore with no apparent talent for anything besides amateur porn.

Britney Spears. Look at me, I'm a trailer park slut who breeds fantastically well with lower level primates.

Jessica Simpson. Look at me, I have HUGE tits and not a single brain cluttering up my skull.

Ashlee Simpson. Look at me, Jessica is my big sister and I have HUGE tits. *hoe down dance*

Katherine Zeta Jones. Look at me, I sleep with Michael Douglas. (whole new level of oookieness)

Lindsey Lohan. Look at me, no you can't see me 'cause I'm a stick figure waiting to die of heart failure.

The Bush Twins. Look at us. We're drunken bimbos but our daddy can bomb you if you aren't nice to us.

Donald Trump. Look at me, I have the worst rug in the world and my lips look like bad liver. Let me feel up your college age daughter.

Celene Dion. Look at me. Better idea, go find a caterwalling coyote and have it sing in french to you.

Okay, I'm done for a moment.

Apparently he's actually good in the up and coming Scanners (and it not animated, its rotoscoped or something, so they're just colouring in his actual performance.

But yeah, based on some of the things he's done, over-rated.

Talking of reality t.v. stars, the single one I'd not object to seeing more of is Darius Danesh. After the crazy unbelivable random patheticness of his auditions. He actually managed to turn it into something good and beat Simon Cowell at his own stupid game, he made an album, which considering the pop-muppets who won Idol were still covering other peoples songs badly, was ok for its level and original at least!

Plus, seeing him on tv, he actually has a personality, he's got the joke now, and he's a laugh a minute (ok, so I 've only seen one appearence, but he amused me)

I think someone should give him a job presenting something, he's got the makings of a decent t.v. personlity, then when his tastes start wandering, he may start making music for grown-ups, and I for one will give it a listen.

oh, sorry, that was my essay on Darius. You'd actually think I liked the guy wouldn't you?

Does anyone find her absolutely nausiating? She's like a cheap-seconds Paris Hilton clone fed through a chav-itiser.

Yes I've thought of someone else!!!

First though, allow me to add my support for everyone else's comments with the possible exception of Brad Pitt and Jeremy Clarkson (I can't help it... he makes me laugh!)

The new people for my list are two people I have hated since the moment I found out how much money they were making.

... Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen

I mean, all they're famous for is being identical. That is biology, not talent or skill. I would be perfectly happy if I never saw either of them ever again. In anything! Grrrrr

Rove Mcmanus - the host of an Australian interview show ('Rove', of course). I just don't know how this unfunny and annoying little man got a tv show and why he is still on the air. He gets all the big stars as well. His show isn't even in the top 100 yet he is this celebrated Aussie icon.

Julie Roberts definetly. Why do people go watch her movies?

As an aussie its hard to say this but Nicole Kidman
She can't act at all yet she is in every big Hollywood movie.

Matthew McConaughey - Can't act. Rides on his looks more than any other Hollywood star

I wasn't going to chime in here, but there is one name that hasn't appeared yet and as far as I'm concerned it should be at the top or tied for the top with Paris Hilton. That fact only kind of scared me into posting.

First, I have to say I don't agree with every mention, but if a name has popped up more than 3 times, (and several have...) I can't argue with any of those.

Pamela Anderson is the poster child for everything that is wrong with Hollywood.

I was going to write this post in response to the one about Ryan Reynolds. But I'm going to start by sticking up for Ant and Dec.

Their popularity may be mistifying in a country where people get on tv for breaking up with their girlfriend to marry Chantelle or for cheating at Who wants to be a millionaire. I for one am glad that people will tune in every Saturday night to see nice normal people like Ant and Dec. They may not be the most talented people in the world. But their SMTV live for children made a nice change from bbc one rubbish for kids and who couldn't love them after Let's get ready to rumble (from one of their three succesful albums). Anyway my point is I think they're sweet so leave them alone .

Also if you don't like Ryan Reynolds and haven't seen Two guys and a girl (formerly two guys, a girl and a pizza place, also starring Nathan Fillion) then you should check it out. If you have and still hate him, ok.

I'm willing to admit I might be wrong. Give me a short list of his work that might change my mind.

I've seen 'The Outsiders', he was the blank spot in the picture. The entire film is overrated as is good only to see all the fair to middling 'stars' before they started to botox.

I miss 'Kindred: The Embraced", his was the only one I didn't wonder ... "now what would have happened to this character?"

Larry David - not. funny. his voice! his hair! his whiny wife! his disgusting friend! his NEUROSES!!!!
Tom Cruise - he only ever made one good film, Days of Thunder (but I'm prejudiced because it involves cars and 80s rock music so just ignore that) and after that...pfft!!!
Paris Hilton, Nicky Hilton and Momma Hilton - the only one who's actually done anything is big Daddio! The rest are just airbrushed, make-up caked peroxide wastes of space!!!!
Jordan, Tara P-T, Jodie Marsh etc etc etc - think who we're talking about here. It really doesn't need an explanation
Homer Simpson - I know he's not real but I hate him anyway
The Friends cast - 40-something anorexia sufferers pretending to be well-adjusted 20-something New Yorkers wading their way through dating, coffee and work. oops, scratch that last one because apparently they just LIVE in central

Whitney Houston - and iiiiiiiieeeeeeiiiiiiiiiii will always luuuuuuuuuuuuve-a yooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooou. shut up.
Ben Affleck - GAH!!!! BENNIFER!!! GIGOLO!!! he's only made one film worth watching - Dogma. And only because it's got Jay and Silent Bob in it.
Kelsey Grammar as Frasier Crane - but only as Frasier. Frasier is just NOT funny!!!
Ricky Gervais - ugh. horrible little man.
Russell Brand - this is the man whose idea of comedy is to say "I'm a modern-day Peter Sutcliffe" and laugh about it. sick twat.
Reese Witherspoon - excepting Cruel Intentions, Walk the Line and one other movie, she has done NOTHING worth the celluloid it's shown on, but then I have an extreme, instinctive, deep-seated loathing of chick-flicks
The Arctic Monkeys - I just don't like them
Hugh Grant - CUT YOUR FRICKING HAIR!! oh, you did...GROW IT BACK!!!!! I CAN SEE YOUR FACE!!!!
Chris Moyles - "I am the voice of today's yoof!!!" no, you're not. you're a sad, fat, middle-aged git who can't admit that he's past it. waaaaaaaaaaaaay past it.
Fearne Cotton - the woman looks like she covered herself in glue then just walked through her wardrobe
Robert De Niro - but only sometimes
Sacha Baron Cohen - Ali G? Borat? Put it away, dear.
Margaret Thatcher - i swear that woman's a vampire...
Mel Gibson - YOU ARE NOT SCOTTISH!!! YOU CANNOT RE-WRITE OUR HISTORY TO SUIT YOUR FILM!!!! and man, you're fugly...
John Travolta - good GOD you're annoying...
Julien MacDonald - mister "I won't design clothes for fat people"
Michael Jackson - just so wrong...
Britney Spears - have you SEEN the trailer for her TV show? it basically consists of her shoving her spotty face up at the camera with a piggy-nose (you know the kind kids make when they pull the tip of their nose towards their eyes?) and yelling "I am awesome!" and they let this reproduce?
chantelle - she's famous for not being famous. how stupid is that? and she can't even speak properly!!! huuuuuuy, mauh nayme's shuntawl. uh you gunna wotch ma shauw?

wow. think i might have issues or something?

In defense of Halle Berry and Reese Witherspoon...

Okay, a little ways up there someone commented on how the hate Halle Berry for ruining Storm, but shouldn't we be blaming the writers for that one? Bryan Singer & Co. choose to have Storm wuss out, in favor of focusing more prominantly on other characters. I mean HB didn't want to come back for X3, unless she was guaranteed that Storm would be more like she was in the comics (here's hoping she finally is). So if you want to hate Halle Berry, please hate her for Catwoman, not X-men.

As for Reese Witherspoon, yes she's done a lot of chick flicks (which I won't mock because I actually like most of them, except for Legally Blonde 2) but if you seriously doubt her acting abilities, please go out and rent Election, Vanity Fair, Freeway and The Man in the Moon. If you still hate her after that, well then I guess there's just not hope for you.

As for actors I don't get, I've never understood the popularity of

-Josh Hartnett. I don't hate the guy, I just don't get why people love him.
- Tara Reid. She essentially famous for being drunk and flashing people.
- Kelly Rippa - She like Kathy Lee Gifford on speed
- Star Jones - where do I begin?
- Hilary Duff - I know she's been mentioned a few times already, I just really hate her.

All of the actors and actresses all of you have mentioned are very popular with most of the people out there. I guess that should tell you a lot about where a nation is at by the heroes that they pay attention to.

Not one of these people that all of you mentioned wouldn’t be where they are today unless there were a lot of some bodies paying attention to them. They are getting paid millions, and people go see them. They purchase the latest gossip magazines, they go to the movies, they buy the books about their favorite actors/actress, and there is a whole industry making zillions of dollars because most people like that sort of thing.

Also, when you look a little closer, sometimes you find something to like about these bad actors/actress.

Example:

Madonna – Hated everything she’s ever done except for Evita. I thought she did well in that.

Brad Pitt – Fight Club is the only thing he got right. I also don’t understand why everyone thinks he’s so handsome.

Catherine Zeta Jones - She can’t act, but I would love to look like her.

Brittney Spears – I don’t think she has any talent, but millions of people buy her CDs.

Jessica and Ashley Simpson – I don’t get it.

Paris Hilton – Total waste of human life.

Denise Richards – Only thing I’ve ever seen her in was Starship Troopers and her acting was very forgettable.

Tom Cruise – He was good in Top Gun and The Firm. But I don’t think he’s done anything good since, and he’s another one that everyone says is so handsome…I don’t see it.

The Olsen Twins – So f**king what?

Lindsay Lohan – I 1st saw her in a movie called Mean Girls and it was an okay movie, but very forgettable.

Jennifer Lopez – Never seen anything of hers so I don’t have an opinion.

Ben Affleck – He’s handsome, and I liked him in The Sum of All Fears, but he plays the same character in every movie he’s in…AJ from Armageddon.

There are other bad actors that I could mention, but I won't

Tom Cruise... I was so puzzled during Jerry Maguire, why is this guy so famous?

I hate to say his name, being that I have bi-polar and all kinds of other crazy things going on in my head and, he, like my Mom just can't understand "why do you need to take pills? Just start acting normal"

in fact, I'm going to list his movies and really get off on a rant... sorry

Mission: Impossible III (2006) .... Ethan Hunt
from the creator of "Lost"... PASS!

War of the Worlds (2005) .... Ray Ferrier
I don't believe that Steven Spielburg had anything to do with this large stinky pile of turd

Collateral (2004) .... Vincent
Another "Great" movie that just sucked

The Last Samurai (2003) .... Nathan Algren
Don't wanna see it and I've heard that I shouldn't

Minority Report (2002) .... Chief John Anderton
I love this movie, and frequently forget he is in it somewhere

Vanilla Sky (2001) .... David Aames
Shouldn't they just burn the original print?

Mission: Impossible II (2000) .... Ethan Hunt
I forgot about this one until the third one started being advertised LAST YEAR!

Magnolia (1999) .... Frank T.J. Mackey
oh... what a boring turd

Eyes Wide Shut (1999) .... Dr. Bill Harford
I think Nicole Kidman should get naked more often

Jerry Maguire (1996) .... Jerry Maguire
fell asleep... what happened?

Mission: Impossible (1996) .... Ethan Hunt
the first five minutes were really cool and the soundtrack is awesome... I love that CD and always forget that in order to remake the theme song that they had to release a movie to accompany the soundtrack

Interview with the Vampire: The Vampire Chronicles (1994) .... Lestat de Lioncourt
I really can not express how much I hate this movie... Anne Rice needs to do a a little RESEARCH, you know like fiction authors usually do

The Firm (1993) .... Mitch McDeere
what? never heard of it

A Few Good Men (1992) .... Lt. Daniel Kaffee
I thought that was a Jack movie... Tom was in it?

Far and Away (1992) .... Joseph Donnelly
no idea...

Days of Thunder (1990) .... Cole Trickle
oh, a dumb race car movie...

Born on the Fourth of July (1989) .... Ron Kovic
no idea...

Rain Man (1988) .... Charlie Babbitt
Possibly the greatest movie of my lifetime... Tom should still be thanking Dustin Hoffman for the Oscar nomination... I could stand next to Dustin Hoffman and get an Oscar nomination

Cocktail (1988) .... Brian Flanagan
wasn't Pee-Wee in that? oh, I'm thinking about that funny movie... at least I think "Cocktail" is supposed to be a comedy...

The Color of Money (1986) .... Vincent Lauria
green... easy

Top Gun (1986) .... Lt. Pete 'Maverick' Mitchell
I love when he fries bacon on that chick's stomach

Legend (1985) .... Jack

Losin' It (1983) .... Woody
The Outsiders (1983) .... Steve Randle
Taps (1981) .... David Shawn
Endless Love (1981) .... Billy

I really don't have a comment about any of these 80's crapfests... oh, The Outsiders... he was in that?

Brad Pitt can be quite good.

Snatch. You couldn't detect any American accent. Or words, for that matter, but you got the sense of what he was gabbling about.

Oceans 11. When they've picked 10, him and George have this almost silent, immobile scene. Something like "...one more? Need one more? (Pause) We'll have one more."

Made up (almost) for Don Cheadle's accent. It seems it is, after all, possible to spell the word 'Cockney' using the letters W, T and F.

The Last Samurai - This was actually a good movie now that I think of it. I went to see it twice. Tom's acting passed pretty well in that movie, though everyone else in the movie acting was better. It was a good story.

The Firm - This movie was sort of like Devils Advocate with Keanu Reeves. The difference between both movies was just a matter of replacing the mafia with Satan.

Rain Man - I agree with everything you said about that movie. I too could stand next to Dustin Hoffman and get an Oscar nomination.

Top Gun - This is the only movies Tom's done that I really liked. His acting really fit the part in the movie.

--------------------------------------------------

About a year ago Tom went on some television show and told America that he was in love with Kate Holmes, and I guess he was so excited about this that he ended up jumping up and down on a couch. It seems that no on really liked this sort of behavior, and have crucified him for it ever since.

I never told anyone this, but I actually thought it was "cute" If I could fall in love again, I would jump up and down on a couch too.

the internet... at least, my public library has no folklore and legends books... I looked up vampires on the internet (I spent the last three years developing a vampire script, to be filmed next year) I would find all kinds of "true" vampire legends... I was learning a lot about 19th century folklore when I discovered that it goes back further and further and further... 12th century actually... in the end, there is a bunch of conjecture about who vampires are and how vampires behave and what does and does not kill a vampire.

Other than that, Anne Rice seems to pull what most of Hollywood pulls... if the scene calls for the vampire to be faster than a locomotive, do it. If the scene calls for the vampire to turn into a fast-moving bit of fog, do it. If the scene calls for the vampire to leap tall buildings in a single bound, do it.

Truth is, that modern books/films just ignore what is logical or what actually makes sense and just go and make their own rules.

Oh and someone said that people dislike Tom Cruise for jumping on Oprah's couch and being an idiot... no no no... I dislike him... err I hate him because he uses his celebrity status to try and convince people that Psychiatric Medicine is useless and that L. Ron Hubbard (the author of "Battlefield Earth") created a legitimate religion and everybody should join.

When it comes to Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise I have to admit to liking more than a few of their movies but it has never been because of their performances.

I do have to commend Pitt for making some less than obvious choices in selecting his roles:
Cool World
Kalifornia

Admittedly some of these were early in his career but he could have easily passed on these and went down the typical pretty boy movie path.

The one I still don't get is Julia Roberts. She is not good looking, can't act, and each movie strikes me as being the same as the last one she did.

I agree with a lot of people mentioned so far. I should note though that the only movie I really cared for Ben Affleck was Dogma.

Other than that...Hayden Christiansen. Man, did he suck as Anakin.

Oh yes Hayden Christianson can't act his way out of a wet paper bag. Although I don't know why anyone would be in a wet paper bag to begin with.

First and foremost:

Brad Pitt. Troy was the first movie that ever tempted me to movie hop in a multiplex...to get away from it without feeling like I flushed $8.50 down the toilet. (This was beside the fact the script writer really needed to be introduced to The Iliad.)

Tom Cruise. I've yet to see him be an actor.

Tom Hanks. Same reason as Cruise and Pitt. He only seems to play himself.

Bill Murray. Hated him on SNL. Loathed and despised him in movies.

Seinfield. Completely not funny.

Brittney Spears.

Jim Carrey. Five minutes is about all I can take of him.

Eminem. (However the heck he mispells it.) Living near Detroit, I hear far more about this idiot then I really want to.

Courtney Love.

Kurt Cobain. Couldn't sing. (Yeah, I know I'm gonna catch flack for that, but he really couldn't.)

and of course, there is the extremely mystifyingly popular Paris Hilton, that Gotti wench, Dog, Simon Cowell, Ryan Seacrest, that "Yo Dog, sup?" dude, and every other Reality Show star whom I also don't know the names of because their 15 minutes was actually pretty close to 15 actual minutes...

Ryan Seacrest and Nichole Richie. They're both a complete waste of skin.
