For me, it was in the pilot (the real pilot - I'm one of those who never saw the show until it came out on DVD), the first time Serenity's fusion engine kicks in and she shows why she's called a Firefly. What a beautiful image. What a great idea. What a phenomenal story!

...and Fux didn't let them show it, because...why? it was too interesting? not enough s**t blowing up? they had a hot episode of Chains of Love to show instead? WHAT?!

I saw the first episode aired on Fox (Train Job). I saw it written up in the paper and was looking foward to it becaue I liked Gina Torres from Hercules and Cleopatra 2525. Anyway, I thought the show was pretty good. But the defining moment, when I knew I was hooked, was when Mal kicked Crow into the engine.

I agree, when I watched the Train Job on Fox, I spent most of the time thinking to myself that I like these characters, but I don't feel drawn to anybody. Why should I feel sorry for these people, they are thiefs. Then Crow got kicked into the engine, and I was like Whoa! This ain't just any other show this is way different. Then they gave the medicine back and that gave me a reason to want to like them and cheer for them trying to exhist in the dark corners of the verse.

I fell in love with the show at the end of 'Out of Gas', and the look on Mal's face upon seeing Serenity in the distance:

The pilot ep., when Mal looks into the cryo chamber and spots a naked River. Says our Big Damn Hero: "huh?".

Where else do you see the Hero lost for words like that? Loved the show from that moment on.

I was a bit of a harder sell.

I think it was in Jaynestown when Simon says "You're pretty. . .pretty" because it was just such a SAD pickup line but so perfectly delivered. And then he screwed up the next morning! And then, once he gets his ass handed to him, Kaylee is pretty forgiving.

It was just so "real" that I fell completely in love with the writing, acting and characters.

For me, it was in 'Bushwacked" where the crew is being interrogated. Zoe tells the dude very firmly that her and Wash's marriage isn't any of his business. Then it cuts to Wash talking about how he loves Zoe's legs. I thought it was such great writing and acting and I was hooked.

I did'nt get a chance to watch it on Fux. I had a friend lend me a VHS that had a mix-match number of episodes. So for me the first episode I saw was Out of Gas. I knew I found something unlike anything I've ever seen, when Mal see's Serenity off in the distance. I dont know exactly why I so connected with that moment. I somehow feel like I'm also searching,but havent found the perfect thing yet?

For me, it was in the original pilot, when they're shutting the ship down to avoid being detected by the alliance and Kaylee climbs up a ladder to turn the lights off and then "...and now I can't get down." I thought it was beyond hilarious - I don't know why - it's not a particularly spectacular moment in the show, but I think it sort of encapsulates the way the crew operates - they get things done, but never without amusing screw ups.

I first caught the show when it aired on SciFi as a run up to Serenity. The first episode I saw was Shindig. I came upstairs and turned on the Tele, and I caught Jayne and the crew plotting to save Cap'n Tightpants. And then Enter River. Her little monologue about Badger was amazing, her accent was spot on, and the switch from playing with her big brother to psychoanylyzing the "Sad little king of a sad little hill" was what got me hooked.

Then when I got the DVD last Christmas, so I watched it all the way back home from California. So I guess the other thing what got me was Nathan/Mal's pep talk to Bendis. "We're not gonna die, you know why Bendis? Because we're too pretty for God to let us die." Totally unlike any other war "We'll be fine" line ever.

My 7 year old son and I were watching the pilot yesterday (he was home sick) and he laughed outloud at that line! We were watching it b/c he wanted to see the scene with Wash (his favorite character) and the dinos - that's the scene that hooked him!

looking back now, id wana say the first line of the pilot, but if im honest it had to be the sword fight scene in shindig, (or more over the inara and mal practising scene right before it.) thats when i knew it was special.

What totaly clinched me howevere was the
"You guys gunna still be here when i get back?" Mal's line from out gas, still chokes me up, as it did the first time.
heard that line- had lump in my throat, and went whoa, i care about these characters this much!

I really enjoyed it right from the 'serenity' pilot, but Ariel really got me addicted... why?...

"Two by two, hands of blue, two by two hands of blue", those guys are well scary and it really highlighted River's powers and I found myself so utterly intrigued by the show and where it was going, the episode also gave Jayne a chance to shine and show a lot of depth to his character which I really liked.

This thread is just evil, you can't limit yourself to just one fantastic moment, they all joined together to form the biggest people magnet EVER!!

I'm finding it really fascinating, the different moments that hooked people. My husband got hooked in the pilot when Mal shot that guy as he was walking on board, no hesitation, no BS. As I said, for me it was seeing why the Firefly was called a Firefly - just so damn unique! But the dialogue is incomparable.

I would have to say that the moment that made my fall in love with the show was in Ariel (first ep i saw, since my friends wanted me to watch them out of order...idiots) Anyway, at the very end when Jayne has his face pressed against that glass and tells Mal to make up the reason why he wont be around anymore...i knew that Jayne was a complex character nd i wanted to see the rest of the series to try and figure him out.

it was when i saw a tv spot for serenity back in october 2005. it looked so great- a down and dirty sci fi opera with humour and great effects as well as characters who you know can be related to. it also had killer lines such as

'you'd better shoot me now.' river cocks gun. 'or, we could talk more.'

and

'faster, faster, faster would be better!'

and of course the classic

'do you wanna run this ship?'
'yeah'
'well...you cant'

after that i knew that i would love the film and the series and that nothing in the 'verse could stop me from watching either!

So...I'm sitting in the cinema end of last year, and a trailer comes on...

"Oh," I think, "It's that bloke from 'A Knight's Tale', and bloody hell, that's Caleb." Cue sniggers at the whole "This is your Captain..." speech.

Meanwhile, husband is getting overly excited at the space battle which then occurs.

"We have to see this film when it comes out."

"Yeah. Looks like fun." Thinks. "But wasn't this based on some U.S sci-fi show?"

So he got me the boxset for Christmas. And so I got to see it all in order before I saw the movie. And partway through Serenity I & II, I got kinda distracted from the oh-so-pretty man in the brown coat, 'cos there was something big and nasty and armed, smirking with a large knife...

Then the plot bunnies mugged me.

Luckily, I am married to a very understanding man.

I watched the show, on a friends recomendation. I watched it alone, with no one to talk to. So it grew on me gradually. I liked it, did not love it.

Then I met Saffron and I just thought that ep was so funny and great, but questioned whether I was in lust as opposed to in love.

Then I saw "Jaynestown". Not saying it is the best episode. But my moment was when the singer belted out "Jayne" for the first time - suddenly the characters I was coming to know became so real in their reactions and the whole reason for the show - that family - snapped into place.

See how I'm not punching him, I think I've grown!

I came to be a Browncoat very late in the game... I remember seeing one episode from the time Fox aired it (don't ask which one) and liked it, but wasn't spending a lot of time with the tube so missed any others. Once the movie came out I knew I had to see it, but missed it in the theaters (ducks the tomatos )...

So, on blockbuster online I ordered the movie and watched it four times before returning it and buying it the same day. It wasn't full on LOVE yet but I dug it big time! No single moment jumps out, but the end with Mal and River and his talkin' on Love hit me good.

That was about the same time that SciFi Channel aired the episodes. I didn't know they were on until I happened on Out of Gas. From the opening scene, slow zoom on the ship and interior empty then Mal falling bleeding, to the end and his first view of Serenity I was transfixed. I cried throughout the whole episode (yes, I'm a sap!) and knew my life would never be the same again. I purchased the series disks that week!

I first saw the original pilot episode Sernity part 1 and 2 when SciFi channel aired the series to prep for the BDM's release in theaters. There were several moments that hooked me.
FIrst the look on Mal's face when he sees that it is not his angels coming in for a landing in the valley for that much needed backup. THe disbelief and shock on his oh so fine and pretty face really said something to me. Then it was Wash and his dinosaurs "Yes, everything looks good from here...we shall rule over this land and call it...this Land. I think we should call it your grave! Ah curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal..." Yep, it had me crying from laughing so much. Next came that moment when we see why Serenity is a Firefly and that fantastic musical cue that goes with it. That was it and I was hooked and this was something special.

Then it was that little moment where we see Jayne and Mal bring in the cargo and Kaylee is all excited about passengers. Mal says if she can every stop being cheerful and how they could duct tape her mouth and throw her in the hold. She leans over and kisses Mal's cheek. "I love my captain" she says and Mal gives her this sweet smile. She loves her captain and so do I.

I watched this with my brother and my mom who had taped the first run of eps shown on the SciFi channel. When the first part was over I turned with this huge grin and said "okay..now where is the next one! You gotta put it in." My brother likes to take credit for getting me into it becasue he taped them first. Well if I had had cable I would have found them too. Oh well credit where credit is due I suppose.

I also love the part when Kaylee is shot and the reaction we get from Mal. I love Kaylee and Mal's relationship. And the scene where Mal tells Simon Kaylee's dead, the way it was filmed and the look on his face and then showing the rest of the BDM's on the bridge laughing thier butts off. And Kaylee's converstion with Mal. "you just gotta have faith in people..."

Beautiful. And now the rest is history and I am one of many who wear that dusty Brown coat with pride and who wish to sail in a Firefly.

The very first scene when you realize these aren't Federation or Space Ranger goverment sanctioned do gooders, but freelance, lets make a buck when and where we can kind of people. The kitchen table that looks like it belongs at Goodwill with all its chairs that don't match. Wash playing with toy dinosaurs while waiting for the rest to finish the job. "Cry baby cry." I knew there wasn't going to be a well groomed captain saying "Make it so", every episode. In other words Joss lets you know immediately this is not outerspace but an adventure and welcome aboard. So you see I did not see the show orgibally on FOX. I bought the DVD's and got the opportunity to see them as in the sequence they were meant to be shown. This was a great benefit. It is just one of those days that felt like Christmas when I placed that DVD in my drive. I hope you all got that same feeling.

I have told this story so many times..... I was in work on my lunch. We had a TV with Cable. I don't own cable. I don't watch much TV :) There was something on the SCi/Fi channel that attracted me. I asked my friend what is this???? he told me 'FIrefly' and it was The Train Job. Ever since ...here I am. He bought the series on DVD after me :D

From then on I knew I wanted to see what adventures Our Crew would go on. Then FOX screwed me over by airing the episodes out of the order they were meant to be seen!

I was a late bloomer, so initially it was River’s character in the BDM. When I first watched Firefly, it had to be the part when Mal tells Simon that Kaylee is dead, and then it cuts to all of them laughing their heads off. It was so wrong, yet so funny. I knew from then on that this was the show for me!

In the pilot episode (Serenity), when Serenity Valley is bombarded and it zooms in on Mal's face. Everything he ever believed in, he ever valued, is gone in the blink of an eye and you see him lose it and his face completely captures his disillusion.

I saw the Serenity-Pilot on sci-fi. I was very eager to finally catch the only Joss Whedon show I'd managed to miss (though, go figure, I ended up missing the teaser and a little of act one). The dialogue seduced me, but the moment that make me realize I was in love was when Kaylee got shot. A bit morbid, I know, but, hey. The moment left me completely stunned. Kaylee? They shot Kaylee? The entire sequence was a work of art, the frenzy, the overlapping dialogue, the way that the intensity of the moment really highlighted the character dynamics and how every interacts with each other... I realized, suddenly, that this was more than just as show, more than just actors acting out words in front of a camera. This was a story, the kind that you can't find every pilot season. Wow, how sad was I that I missed it the first time around?

First episode I saw was Bushwhacked when it was originally aired. I loved the whole episode, especially the interogation scene but I have to say that at the end of the episode when the ship is blown up by the alliance and that music came on and the whole thing seemed so real...i was completely addicted.

Hey Channy. As I continue read this thread, the more I realize is that I am constantly falling in love with this show. I've loved this show from the start. But the best thing about Firefly is that every episode has at least one line or scene that just ropes you in.

They do, don't they? The BDM does that to me too. I couldn't sit in the theater seats for very long last Thursday, so I tend to get up and stand in the back and watch. I was going to go out and get something from the concessions stand too, right after *this* scene or right after *that* scene... Then I figured I might as well just sit down.

I was totally hooked in "Our Mrs. Reynolds" when Saffron knocked-out Mal (with a kiss) and then Wash (with a kick), and then caused all that damage to Serenity, all in about 10-15 minutes of screen time. The surprise of learning she wasn't what she appeared to be, coupled with her devious craftiness, did it for me.

EEE-ZEEE. It was the first commercial I saw for it. It showed a couple of fast-paced cuts from the Reaver chase in the pilot and then the shot of the full burn in atmo, and the cut to Jayne's trimphant stand in the engine room. I got so excited I think I peed a little.

When I saw the movie on DVD, I realized, that I had (months ago) seen a commercial on it. I recognised the scene, where they discuss, what to do, and Jayne has another opinion, and Mal asks somethiong like: do you wanna lead the ship? Jayne - yes! Mal: Eh - you can't do that! (or similar - sorry, I have the German wording in my head).

It was just so "that's-how-live-is". Actually, that's how Joss is - being all genre-typical and then pulling the crap. Aaah, he's just great.

Anyway, so I realised, that I was kind of "in love" just from the commercial. The memory of the commercial stuck to me until I found it again in the movie (jumping up and down: I've seen this, i've seen this!). Two days later, I had the DVD of Firefly.

So that's my story.

First, I will admit that I'm a new recruit and saw the shows in order on the box set. And then saw the BDM.

There are 10 hooks a show. By the time Wash was playing with his dinosaurs, I thought it was special. By Mal's incredible double take at, "Sir, I'm your wife," it was in my top 5 TV shows ever. By War Stories, it was number one. "O.k. I'm right here. I'm angry. And I'm armed."

But love? That wasn't until the closing scene of The Message. The scorer admits that the music contains all of his emotion at the end of the show. Silently, they all reveal their worry for each other and their need to connect. Jayne breaks down. Then Mal looks out at the whole group that he's carrying and who are carrying what's left of him....

Sigh.

And quibble: I wish they'd had time to include Mal closing Tracey's eyes.

In all fairness I'm not an "original" Browncoat and I never even heard of Firefly when it was on Fox. In fact, when I went to see Serenity with my friends. One of my friends (who was a Browncoat) I think was secretly trying to convert all of us in one swoop and boy did it work. Thanks Parker6097. It wasn't until after the movie he told me that Serenity was based on a tv series called Firefly.

Shortly after that he lent me the series and of course I was instantly hooked, more specifically when Mal shoots Dobson in the head at the end of the pilot. I always love a bold hero, and Mal is also a kind of anti-hero and I always love a good anti-hero.

Okay, are we talkin' about where I got hooked, or where I got absofrickinlutely obsessed with the show?
I got sufficiently interested to watch another episode after Jayne goes crazy and falls asleep.
I got sufficiently obsessed to watch the rest of the season, by the movie, and become a browncoat after Our Mrs. Reynolds. Many scenes: Book's "Special hell", Inara tring to convince everybody that she "tripped", Jayne's little comment on kissing, and Mal thinking that Inara kissed YoSaffBridge.

I think it was the "you don't even like me"/"you're on my crew" exchange in "Safe," and how it reflected on Gabriel Tam's "I won't come for you again." The contrast perfectly illustrated what makes a family, and yet the writers respected us enough to just drop the two lines in there, several scenes apart, without comment.

To me, that was all kinds of shiny.

Oh, I was in love from the moment I saw toy dinosaurs on what looked like a pink toy lake on the dashboard and then hearing OMG! a Beatles lyric, but what made me decide I would totally sleep with Firefly on the first date and then wake up early to shower, put on a little makeup, and make breakfast was when Mal, upon returning from the squirmish with Patience's crew, in one ultra-cool smooth move, strides up the ramp and puts a bullet in Dobson's head without one single pause or break in stride.

That was THE COOLEST move I've seen since I can't remember, to me on the same psychic plane as the continuous/not-one-edit 'Copacabana' scene in Goodfellas. I believe I even let out a small groan of pleasure. I know I rewound it half a dozen times. And it was then that I decided I would summon every bit of will power to NOT watch every single episode in once sitting.

Possibly the best, though. Loved the first-date thing. (About halfway through, if anybody forgot it by the end.) Not sure if you misspelled 'skirmish' on purpose, but if so it was a nice touch.

My journey to the 'verse

turned to scifi channel right as i was leaving for a scout meeting, saw the end of some firefly episode and thought "those are cool doors..." An art teacher told me to check out this new movie called "Serenity". Never heard of it, maybe a commercial once or twice. she said it was from some scifi western called firefly. I dont usually go see movies so I diddnt look into it. then I started a scifi club and my friends wanted to watch serenity. i saw it and thought it was okay but diddnt really understand the characters, dont really remember what i thought. I was taping stargate and caught "out of gas" by mistake and watched it out of curiosity, same as serenity, I diddnt understand how the characters interacted. the way mal had to get on to everyone just to do their job. all semester a friend of mine talked about teh show and showed me the serenity visual companion and so i started looking up more stuff. I was just reading a 'verse timeline and thought "this is interesting, i should see this" so I asked another friend to borrow the DVDs, started watching them with my family, bought my own st along with serenity on serenity day, and the more I see the more i love, and now want to get my hands on everything firefly.

I caught all of the Firefly episodes when they aired on Fox. I knew I liked the show a lot when I saw Mal push Crow into the engine in The Train Job. Fox aired that instead of what was meant to be the pilot (Serenity) first. I didn't know if you knew that or not. If you did, I beg your pardon if I insulted your intelligence.

I liked Bushwhacked, the second episode aired. The reavers intrigued me.

I knew I absolutely loved the show when I saw Mal beat Atherton in the duel and he did his whole mark of a great man speech. After he gave Atherton that last stab and said "Well, I'm all right." I fell head over heels in love and knew I was watching one of the greatest shows ever made.

The first episode I saw was Ariel. I think I started to fall for the show when Simon was teaching the crew how to pass themselves off as EMTs, but it was the closing scene with Mal and Jayne that really clinched it for me. I knew right then that this was something special.

Funny thing is it wasen't part of the show. The special fetured of Serenity in their entirety I think spoke volumes of the show. I missed the show completely and just a month ago I rented serenity, I was curious so I rented the collection, and after the second apperance of sapphron I was hooked.

I fell in love with the BDHs and the verse when I was watching the first episode. The crew is on an illegal salvage mission and Wash is back at the controls: " Everything looks good from here.."
Just when you think that he's monitoring the crew's progress, it is revealed that Wash is just playing with his toy dinosaurs....and then gets Mal, Zoe and Jayne out of there in a hurry (with Kaylee's expertice)....with the goods...which brings them a whole heap of problems.....

h'mmm, well, i actually managed to watch nearly all of the series without falling in love with it, so t'speak, but it was near enough the very last scene in objects in space, when river asks to come aboard, something just clicked into place and the whole thing took on a whole new dimension of squeedgy. then i rewatched it all (wasn't getting paid for it this time though, good wheeze night-shift) and each and every episode took on so much new meaning, 'cos all of a sudden you have this huge emotional investment in the characters and what they get up to.

Lol! There were many, but I'll try to narrow it down. I first watched the series waaaaay out of order, and ended up seeing the last six, first. So, my fave moment was definately when, in War Stories, everybody's so rarin' to go and Zoe's all a-like, 'Let's go get the captain.' And I was like, I love this show. Also, same ep,
Zoe: Shoot anything that moves.
Kaylee: Except the captain.
Zoe: Except the captain.
Just the way she says it, not condescending, not snooty, just a simple truth. I totally loved the familial atmosphere of the ship, at that point. And of course, any point thereafter, where I got the little emotion *zing* after watching the opening credits. You know, "you can't take the sky from me"...zing.

I was introduced to the show when visiting my friend at Princeton, who showed me "Our Mrs. Reynolds" first (good for converting people). The moment came right after Mal and Saffron kissed, when Mal said, "Son of a...." and hit the floor. It was just amazing. Her "Night, sweetie," afterwards was just the sweetest icing on the cake.

The first time I watched the show was when it aired, with the Train Job. I liked it, enjoyed Mal shoving the thug into the turbine, but was somewhat unimpressed my the episode. Later my family got the DVDs and i saw Serenity.
The look in Mal's eyes, the horror and disbelief, as his men are mercilessly slaughtered by the superior Alliance ships, as his faith in God and freedom are shattered completely; that is when I fell in love.

I loved the show from the first time that I heard the theme.The ship zooming over the heads of the running horses made a statement;People and problems are the same past,present and future.
I knew that I would love the show forever when I saw Shindig.The crushed look on Kaylee's face when the debutants are putting down her beloved pink party dress stayed with me for a long time.
That's when I knew it was more than just a story,
these folks were family.

I am a new recruit I guess.

I have never heard of Firefly or Serenity at all. I am on the other end of the globe. I have never seen the show on TV. I don't have sci-fi channel and fox news is the only FOX on TV here. I am so detached from sci-fi since season 1 of Farscape that I only get to watch on AXN here. Most shows here are local TV and are fantasy soaps!!
The only thing I know about Joss Whedon was that he created Buffy and Angel and was to direct the new Wonder Woman movie. I did like Buffy, and Angel. But Firefly? I never heard of it. I just stumbled into it while on the net looking up Wonder Woman movie updates.
I stumbled into Morena. And Firefly being one of her credits. I thought she'd be a good WW. Then I left it at that. Few months later, I was looking up for WW updates again. There were a lot of women now rumored for the coveted role, but none of them looked like the one I saw before. I liked Morena the first time I saw her. So I looked her up. Still the same info about her. Firefly. I once again left it at that.
Weeks later I spotted a Firefly DVD in the mall. I bought something else that day. I came back to buy FF a few days later.
MAL shocked me as a response to why they are not going to die. "Coz we're pretty!". HUH?!
But what got me was Kaylee looking for passangers sitting with her blue-green dress and tiny oriental umbrella. She was so happy.
I felt very happy watching it and wanted to see more of it.
And I laughed so hard in OUR MRS REYNOLDS. That sealed the deal. I'm hooked.

I always meant to watch the show on FOX, but could never remember when it was on. Then I forgot about the show. Sci-Fi then started advertising the show and I though, "Oh, cool. I can check it out, finally." I forgot to watch it on Sci-Fi, also. My brother took me to go see "Serenity" and I was like, "OMFG! That rocked!" I then promptly forgot out "Firefly" again till just a few weeks ago and I spotted the DVD boxset for "Firefly" at Target. I picked it up and thought the first 3 episodes were ok, but I think it was either the 4th, 5th or 6th episode that really got me hooked on the show. I've been watching a DVD a night and then "Serenity" for the last two weeks. LOL, I even got my grandfather to start watching it.

My earliest memory of the show was when I stumbled upon it on FOX one night. I never watched the show when it was airing, but the scene I saw was permanantly etched into my memory, since it'd made me pretty much pee my pants laughing so hard, despite being out of context. Time passed, and the title of the show, and the fact that it had been a Joss Whedon production, faded from my memory.

It wasn't till i got a chance to watch the DVD's that I realized that I had been blessed to witness one of the funniest moment on television without knowing it. I never forgot the scene I saw that night, nor the first words I EVER heard utter by a Firefly character...

"If you take sexual advantage of her, you’re going to burn in a very special level of Hell...a level they reserve for child molesters, and people who talk at the theater."

Yeah, "Our Mrs. Reynolds" was probably one of my favorite episodes, too. The "special hell" that Book mentions made me laugh pretty hard, too. I laughed harder after the pause and then he says, "and people that talk in the theater." Then he pops back around the corner and says, "A special hell." and runs off. LOL! Definitely one of the many great moments the TV series had.

Of course, the chinese was an added plus for me. It was new, it was hip, and... it's just fun to curse in a foreign language people don't normally learn in high school, so no one knows what it means.

i actually watched the movie before the series, because i didnt know that the movie was based off of a series. the opening scenes were interesting, but what really got me hooked and make me think to myself "i have to find out more about this series" was when the serenity is flying into the world for the bank heist, and the panel flies off the ship and mal goes "what was that?"

I was hooked from there. I had never seen Firefly, and I missed Serenity in the theater, though I'd greatly wanted to go. When I finally rented the movie and saw that opening scene, I knew I'd found a universe for me. I love finding different ways of saying the same old thing, and the Firefly/Serenity 'verse does just that. The relationships between the characters are fantastic, whether they are positive or otherwise.

What moment FIRST made me fall in love with the show? Well, the first episode I ever saw was about 85% of 'Our Mrs. Reynolds'. Caught it by accident, as I was meant to be in bed. Firefly showed at 12:30am Monday night/Tuesday mronings in Australia... I was 15...

I knew I LIKED this show. I knew I wanted more.

Bought Firefly on DVD as soon as I found it at the wonderful JB-HIFI. By the end of 'Serenity' (the ep.) I was in love. But no singular moment did it for me. Lots and lots of little ones.

When Mal, Jayne and Zoe are walking back from Badgers, there is a street vendor at a barbeque. The sign reads 'Real Dogs'. I paused it right then and stared at it for a good 5 minutes.

I'm one of those people who didn't get to see Firefly until it was on DVD, more specifically, internet download before I bought my first Firefly DVD.

It was the opening theme that did it for me, I feel in love with it instantly.

I'm one of those who saw the movie, unaware there was a series, then saw the series (then cried inside when I knew there was no more to be had.)

Keep in mind I didn't know what the movie was when I saw it. I got it as part of a two-pack with Chronicles of Riddick. (FWIW, the blurb on the back of the movie case didn't really do justice to the movie... I thought it was going to be a SF space opera hack flick. BOY I WAS WRONG!)

So was there "a moment"? Yes and no. There were things that drew me. The fact that they were short on cash and down on luck helped. It was an every person's movie. (Hey, I'd take a crew slot on Firefly any day!) The fact that the captain bawls out his engineer and she reminds him she'd asked for new parts six months ago and he'd forgotten. (I'm an engineer of sorts, and can relate.)

If I had to pick a moment when the hook set and the barb took, it had to be when the crew was getting into the Mule (the floaty Mule). Two lines just got me:

Mal: If anything should happen to her, anything at all, I swear to you - I will get very choked up. Honestly. There might even be tears.

Simon to River: It's ok to leave these people to die.

Even so it was a gradual thing... that took all of about fifteen minutes. By the end of the movie I was thoroughly hooked and needing more. By the end of the special features I'd placed my Amazon order for the series DVDs. By the end of the series...

I actually didn't start the obsession with the movie like so many of you guys, in fact the first episode I saw was Out Of Gas a few months back. I don't know what it was exactly about it that made me think "Wow this show RULES!!" But that was pretty much my initial reaction. I ended up watching the entire series and the movi in less than two months. And yeah, I realize that that wasn't really a great story....

There were all these little moments that got me hooked on the show....

But when Mal first sees Serenity in the end of OoG, I just sat there in the dark after the episode ended, fully in love with the show and the characters thinking, "This is the best show ever. EVER."

....isn't it funny that this line wasn't scripted? Joss said in the commentary that he told Nathan to just make up some line that would sound "Mal-ish" and that's what Nathan came up with. Then Joss had the thought, "I should have just let the actors write it for me." lol

I actually saw the movie first. But it was only a few minutes in which made fall in love with it. When the Operative says "Stop. Backtrack. Stop", followed by the whole scene introducing him, which was just brilliant. And then it was that good the whole way through. So immediately after seeing the film (about 5 times) I had to go and watch the whole of the series.

Hi and welcome, Brys. I don't think we've crossed trails on the board yet, so, glad to meet you!

You know, I've never heard anybody mention that scene of the movie as their "hook" before. I'm a long-timer (saw Firefly's first run on TV) so to me it was an introduction to the movie's "bad guy", not to the whole 'verse. It was, of course, powerful since Joss uses that scene to show us very clearly just how ruthless the Operative is going to be.

You know, I sometimes worry that the "fall on the sword" scene is just too shocking an introduction for those who've never seen Firefly. Your comments make me feel a bit less worried about that.

I first watched the BDM and had to check out the series.

I loved the part when Mal told Jayne he couldn't take grenades with them. While being chased, Jayne looked at Mal and said, "It'd be nice if we had some grenades right about now!"

After that I was hooked for life.

I was a very very late convert to Firefly, wanting to watch the series before I watched the movie, and honeslty, the movie intrigued me opnly becuase Gina and Morena are just so damn gorgeous!

I got a copy of the pilot episode in a hollywood video and withing 15 minutes, I was wearing a brown coat! it hooked me that fast! And now there is just no looking back!
