Hi -

We (Mutant Enemy & Fox Music) are currently working on a Firefly score soundtrack. While I can't really get into the details, we hope to have a soundtrack available in 2004, perhaps via an "alternative" distribution channel. I will post any actual news on the offical board, but know that we are working on it.

Thanks for the interest.

Best,
Buchanan

Hrm... I started working on one just the other day. I wonder who will be first to finish! (I'm only on Bushwacked =p)

I'm just watching the DVDs and grabbing any music that goes for 20s or more without dialog, is a fairly complete sounding passage, and catches my ear ans being 'nice'. I have about 4 tracks so far, though, there's a few in later episodes I already have my 'ear on'.

Either way, can't wait for it to come out! I hope that the 'alternative delivery' is via iTunes, as Pepsi is about to give about 10,000,000 iTunes downloads or something like that.

Maybe we can compare notes when you're finished? :) I made my own described at: http://fireflyfans.net/thread.asp?b=2&t=3065

I gave up on the "no dialogue" rule myself since there are nice bits of music that have dialogue over them, and there's just not enough music otherwise.

Hey, I want to be a part of that "alternative distribution" channel.

I'll probably end up doing that, at least for parts that have just a little dialog in the middle of some extended musical peices.

I'm also thinking about doing a hat's track by compiling all the scenes where someone talks about hats. =p

Woot! Great news, a shiny new CD to keep me happy driving to and from work! If the DVD sales are anything to gauge the possible CD sales on, I'd say you have a winner...)

Also... I can kill you with my brain...

Does anyone have contact information for Mutant Enemy? I would like to contact Greg Edmonson's agent or publicist about this release. Thanks.

I got my DVD box set for Christmas ( Thanks me ) It still staggers the mind that Fox missed out on this concept.

Is that an actual quote from the series ?

If so, which episode? Heck,I'll watch the DVD again till I find out.

I'm all for watching the DVDs over and over again, but I would be surprised if you ever find that quote, because it comes from a script that was never filmed. Here's the link to the script:

This is great; Firefly's been "dead" for more than a year, yet everyone's still talking about it.

Hey, Joss brought Buffy back from the dead, not to mention Angel & Spike. Creating a soundtrack only enhances the value of the can't-get-here-too-soon FF movie.

I only wanna know one thing: where do I get in line for this now?

I have said it before, and it wont hurt to say again. FOX Studios thought a successful space franchise was a licence to print money, just look at "Star Trek". They knew that Joss Whedon was a bankable name, so how could they lose. I should imagine lots of people at Fox Studios are deeply pissed with F*X Notwork for screwing "Firefly" so badly. They It looks like the success of the DVD set, and know that a soundtrack CD will also sell well, and a desperately hoping Universal makes a film, so they can start making the TV series again.

this is sooo thrilling. Having FINALLY introduced my family to my so-treasured dvd set (they could have cared less while it was on), they are now fans. The first comment from my brother-in-law was 'Love the music'....
Cant wait for a CD (hopefully).

I recently posted an update on the soundtrack release here:

Unfortunately, it will be something like iTunes instead of a real CD. But you can write them and ask for the CD release!

Hopefully it won't be released only with digital restriction management loving iTunes - locking out users of GNU/Linux and other OSs unless they crack it < http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/6/34712.html>.

I hope there's an option to download Ogg Vorbis < http://www.vorbis.com/> files, and that most of the money goes to the composer and the musicians.

Yeah, I know. That sequence really sold me on the whole show....when I had great doubts that a "space oater" could work. It should become the signature riff of the whole show.

(It's just one more thing to underline the COSMIC idiocy of NOT airing the pilot as the first ep.)

PS: Don't forget Jayne's "Let's moon 'em..." Real Outlaw! Do you think they can get Willy Nelson to appear in the movie?

I remember that haunting piece of music from "Out of Gas". Was that piece written for the show? Or is it a classical piece? It is a tremendous bit of music.

I love the Firefly DVD box almost as much as the show... well I guess that's not true. I just love that after all the bootlegs that I finally have a Firefly DVD boxset that boasts the name "Firefly" on it. I like to shove it in people's faces! Just kidding, anyways I want a Firefly soundtrack with a cover a BIG DAMN BEAUTIFUL COVER.

In the end, there will be a series and a series sountrack and a film and a film's soundtrack.

I want to have all four... not some Mp3s on my computer.

I WANT IT ALL!! damn, Mp3s don't sound as clear as a CD also.

Thanks for the update.
If it's too "alternative" you all may have to tell me what to do to get it. i'm pretty computer ignorant.
I remember listening to the commentaries and nathan said he would rewatch episodes just to listen to the music so i thought i would do that to.
i loved it all.
occasionally i hear something similar on tv (on deadwood as an example) and i just stop and soak it in.
a shiny cd would be very nice.

Yeah I'd much rather have a shiny in-store CD to buy than have to muck around with downloads and all that jazz.

But I want it, badly.

Speaking of Deadwood I've been searching high and low for the theme song for that but to no avail.

Ah, a soundtrack ON TOP of a trio of films... I just pray they're all released in England. Who knows? Maybe the two will kindle more interest than me and a few :)

Although, the Firefly DVD set was in the top 100 on Amazon.co.uk... a good sign, hmm?

if you are think of the peice from "out of gas" where aml is walking through the sship as the two shuttles leave and hes closing doors behind him, yeah. i would buy a soundtrack for JUSST that peice.

and i too hope, no pray, its a real cd and not a itunes deal, because i don't actually have a computer so services like that are useless to me.

but MP3s can sound even better then regular cds but only if the bit rate is high. (128 or higher = shiny). the problem is from what i hear those "legal" music DL services don't use such high rates so the songs do sound worse then cds.

either way, i don't care, i want a cd. (watches "out of gas" again)
