The Captain was not in a good mood. "Badger I ain't in the mood to play so here's your cut

"Whoa CAPTAIN Faolin you got somthin bugging you. aven't seen you this mad since that time with the feds"

"You don't want to go there Badger"

"Little Kaylee got shot and you killed how many did you kill so someone else get hurt"

The Captain sprung into action disarming and knocking out every guard in the room before that could react. he took out his gun and shot Badger in the foot. He dropped Badger's cut by his side

"I told you you didn't want to go there"

Shanti takes the finished cake out of the oven. It's not as fluffy as she might like, and maybe a little too protieny, but it should serve to celebrate.

The sudden knocking on the hull gains her attention and she heads down the cargo bay, and sticks her head out, "Heys! Quit pounding! What's the deal?"

Darren heard the pounding from the infirmary where he was tinkering with his new tools. He walked into the cargo bay and saw Shanti there.

He said to her "Is Gail bangin' his head against the ship again?"

Then he saw the man standing in the cargo bay and said "Hi."

Darren satisfied that the thing Mononoke dragged into the cargo bay wasn't a Reaver, headed back to the infirmary where his new toys were. He nodded to Shanti was was talking to the guy with the bottle of alcohol.

"Who was he?" Darren thought as he entered the infirmary.

He shrugged and sat down on the floor next to the box of new tools and parts. Darren picked up the Span-Matic 3000 and played with the settings.

She smiles, hoping he says yes, that she can get out of the command position that the Captain asked her to take. Of course, was that really the best thing, what with his drinking and his excuses? Reaver Whores? She almost laughs out loud at the thought! Who would pay for Reaver Whores?

"Mononoke?" She glances at the standing hologram the girl is dragging, "What'd ya want that ugly thing for?"

Darren chose that moment to get up from the floor, craddle the box of new parts and tools, and say to Shanti and Choo "Well this is my cue ta head back ta the engine room."

Shanti replied to Darren as Choo thought of an answer to her question "You don't have to go Darren."

"Yes well somebody's gotta keep this bird up and runnin'." Darren replied as he left the infirmary and headed back to his sanctuary that was the engine room. He whistled a familiar tune as he entered the engine room and went to work checking to make sure the engine was within specs.

She leads the way up to galley, ready to put on a pot of coffee to go with the cake she'd just baked.

Darren walked into the galley fiddling with another part. He sees Shanti and Choo "Hi ya two, Mmmm what smells so good?"

Shanti smiles and says "I'm baking a cake. You're more than welcome to have a slice. Would you like some coffee Darren?

Darren sat down at the table, smiled at Shanti and replied "Yes in both counts thank ya."

Shanti nodded "It's not a problem Darren. Your coffee will be ready in a minute. How do you take yours by the way?"

"Black please." Darren said still grinning. Choo looked at the part in Darren's hands and said "What's that you're working on Darren if you don't mind my asking?"

Darren turned his attention to Choo "Its a Regulation Coupler, it's kinda like an appendix really, quite useless kinda like Gail's brain."

Shanti starts laughing again, but tries to pull herself together as her broken ribs protest with sharp shards of pain. "Darren, for shame! Gail's a kind, generous, sweet-heart of a gun-toting murderer! We're lucky to have him onboard."

For a moment both men stare at her, unused to seeing her make a joke, then Darren chuckled as she refilled his coffee cup. "He can shoot, I'll give him that much."

"Wonder when the captain is coming back. They were just supposed to meet up with Badger, and then come straight back, weren't they?" Shanti's brow crinkles in worry as she slices the cake, figuring the smell will attract the others up to the galley.

"I'm sure the Captain is doing fine." Choo responded as Shanti gave him a slice of cake. "Thank you Shanti."

Shanti smiled "You're welcome Mr. Choo. Here you go Darren."

"Thanks Shanti." Darren dug into the cake "Mmmm this is good."

"Well I'm glad you two like my cake. Now I just wish the others would come in and try some." said Shanti just as the pilot and Dr. Laup walked in.

Choo puts a data sheet on the table. There two faces are shown, a young man and a young girl.

Guy on the top broke his sister out of that fancy State Run schooling place some months ago. Weirdest thing ever.

But you want to know whats stranger?

Choo taps the data sheet and information is brought forward.

Shanti takes a good look at the picture. The girl is sullen looking, dark hair in strands around the face. She stares dully into the camera, and something tugs at Shanti's memories.

She knows that look. It is the look of someone who has lost hope. Someone who has been broken down, and stripped into pieces.

Shanti holds her ribs as she lowers herself into a chair. She doesn't look at the others as she says in a low voice, "I say, if she wanted to be free so badly, then she deserves to be. Rewards are only worth what the heart values."

Darren got up from the table just as Shanti entered the galley. Darren saw the shocked look on her face "Sorry but there was no way ta stop him from gettin' at the cake."

"That cake was supposed to be for everyone!" Shanti shouted at Banner.

Banner looked up at Shanti with crumbs on his face and said with his mouth still full "Sorry oy was hungry."

Shanti threw up her hands and stormed off to her bunk, "MEN!!" was the only word she shouted as she left the galley.

Darren looked at Banner and shrugged "Well if'n anyone needs me I'll be in my bunk."

That being said, Darren left for his bunk.

In her bunk she lowered herself slowly to the bed, her heart pounding.

Banner ate the WHOLE THING! She hadn't even had a taste. "Gah, Jeddy! I'm glad you're the only one in my bed."

Carefully, she cradled the stuffed bear to her good side. So, the Captain had secrets, thing that made him angry enough to shoot people, to forget himself in the heat of the moment.

A sudden image came to her of her boot splattered with blood and the sensation of bone crunching under her heel.

"Guess the captain isn't the only one, huh, Jeddy?" She was already hungry again, but figured a nap before she had to cook would calm her temper a bit.

Darren closed the hatch to his bunk, kicked off his boots, set his pistol on the desk, and took off his mechanics uniform, revealing a tat of a jade colored dragon on his left arm. Darren pulled up the covers of his bed, got in, turned off the lights, and went to sleep.

Choo watches as the batterd old crago ship heads towards the black. looking down at the floor he lets out a sigh of relief.

"You've done well good sir." said a suited figure who emerged from the shadows. "my employers will be well pleased."

"Whatever" muttered Choo and walked into the crowd in the direction of his ship..

...not before placing the homing beacon he had been given onto a random ship (a Hercules garbage scow) he passes.

The Captain sat in his bunk and looked himself in the mirror. Why did he kill those men. It wasn't just that he had been reminded about his past but a time in his past when much like today he felt out of control. Also a man had really shaken up his first mate." Eventually his past would ctch up with him it always had had when he was on Osiris had when he went home had on Sereniy.

Awake and hungry, Shanti headed for the galley. Best to dig up some kind of chow. Soon enough the others would be awake, and there was a new job to plan.

She swallowed down her enzyme pill and pulled some cheese-substitute out to munch on while she started breakfast. Her ribs seemed to ache worse today than they had the day before, but she knew that was normal. Might have to see the doc about something to quiet the pain a bit.

Wincing, she pulled out the frying pans and started breakfast, humming a tune to herself.

Darren stretched and yawned as he woke up. He got out of bed pulled on his jumpsuit, leaving the top half off as he put on a tank top. Darren walked over to the desk, put on his tool belt and holstered his pistol as he left his bunk. He walked into the galley, saw Shanti humming to herself and said "Mornin' Shanti how'd ya sleep?"

Darren seemed to be the one stable quotient on the crew, although he was quiet about his past, didn't say too much. But he was always singing. She was getting to like that about him.

Shanti looks to both men, squared off, Darren's gun out, Banner's hand on his own. She didn't tend to stand up to such situations, just let men tear each other apart if that's what they wanted to do.

But not this time. This was her crew! "Look, you two, I do NOT have patience for this today! This food is getting cold and if you want to insult my fine cooking by fighting instead of eating, that's too bad!"

She gave Darren a pleading look, "Just let it go."

Darren didn't know what came over him as he swung a large wrench at Banner's head. Shanti, Captain Faolin, and Puro looked in shock as Banner fell down the stairs, Darren right behind him. Darren landed a few qiuck blows to Banner's ribcage just as he heard the familiar sound of weapons cocking.

"Put the wrench down Darren." Faolin said while pointing a pistol at Darren's back. "Or else I'll be forced to shoot you."

Darren looked at Banner's unconcious, beaten, yet still breathing body. "Darren?" Shanti's voice said in a pleading tone "Do as the Captain says please Darren?"

Darren took a deep breath, let it out slow, and dropped the wrench. "I don't take ta kindly ta folks insultin' me." replied Darren as he looked at Banner still laying on the floor.

Darren tried not to look at Shanti as Faolin escorted him to his bunk. Once they were out of Shanti's sight, Faolin took Darren by the collar and threw him against the wall. "What the ruttin' hell was that all about Darren!"

Darren looked into Faolin's eyes "I'm sorry sir me and Banner got into a little spat in the galley earlier and I just kinda snapped sir. I promise not ta do it again sir."

"You're gorram right you won't. You're a damn fine mechanic and I'm glad you're working on my boat, but if you do this go se again I will throw you off this boat before we hit dirtside. Dong ma?"

Darren nodded "Yes sir Cap'n. It won't happen again."

Faolin released his grip "Good to hear. The same thing applies to Banner as well. You'll be confined to your bunk. I'll have Shanti bring you some food."

Faolin opened the hatch to Darren's bunk as Darren replied "That'll be fine sir. Again I'm sorry for what I did."

"I know you are Darren." Faolin replied as Darren's hatch closed and he walked back to the bridge.

Shanti, feeling kind of shell-shocked, watched as the doc treated Banner on the galley floor. Seeing the captain headed back to the bridge, she handed him a plate.. Banner's untouched one, "Captain, you should eat."

Then she looked worriedly back out into the Black, where all traces of the brilliant explosion had faded into nothing, "What was the light show about? Do you know?"

"You really should see to Luap about that," Faolin says, not looking at the mammoth merc.

"Had worse. Kid ain't too bad, once you get him riled up. Reminds me of..." He shakes his head, flashing his gold-capped teeth. "Nothing. Now what exactly is the deal with the fireworks?"

(OoC: Heh. Me, Pain, and Ertia are all Lifers. Ertia's kind of the unofficial leader, so...ask her, I guess. Ah screw it. I'll take this one.)

Life On-Board Serenity is a chain-story, like this one, taking place on (you guessed it) Serenity. All of the canon characters (Mal,River,Book, etc.) are there, plus the authors, who are as follows:

and anybody else I forgot.

Basically, you create a character for the story, and can pretty much be anyone. Although I think we all agree that cyborgs are pushing it. (You were thinking it!) No killing of canon characters or anybody's character without permission, and try to keep character's (and posts) consistent with themselves and the story.

Anything (and I'm sure there's something) I forgot, Ertia or Pain can adapt on what I've said.

If you plan on having a relationship with one of the characters, please keep it clean (i.e. there's people under 18 on the thread so no adult content). Oh and my character and Ertia's are in a relationship with each other on the Life Onboard Serenity just so you know.

Yes, what they all said above. Anyone can play, anyone can join, and we have some spare "crew" wandering around the ship if you don't want to make a grand appearance. Just pipe up like you've always been there. :)

Shanti ran down the stairs to Darren's bunk and pressed the release catch override on his door, "Darren? You okay?"

"Yah." Darren starts forward then stops when he sees the former slave cringe away from him. Holding up his hands, he says, "Sorry. Shanti, I'm real sorry. Didn't mean to scare you..."

She holds up one hand, trying to smile at him, "I know. It's shiny, Darren. Really. But we got some kinda problem in the ship and Captain wants you in the engine room."

Grabbing up his toolbelt, he doesn't notice her shy away again as he hurries to his engine.

Shanti is just about to step up the stairs again when a gloved hand covers her mouth, a soft voice hissing in her ear, "Shhh... Just shush, bao bei."

There's a sharp pinpoint stab to her back, and the world goes black. Her last thought is to warn the others.

Alone in his sparse bunk, Banner rummages through his battered canvas pack, eventually drawing out an old-fashioned photo album. The cover is dominated with a black-and-white picture of Banner, a woman, and two little girls, smiling brightly.

Flipping the pages almost mindlessly, the merc tries to bring back what the photographs couldn't. Softly placing the album back in it's rightful place, his eyelids close, pressing against dampness.

Hey no problem.

Darren checked and rechecked every part he could access. Frustrated Darren took out the scanner and scanned the engine's thermal readings. He passed the scanner over the underside of the engine and saw a heat fluctuation as he passed over the port induction manifold.

"There ya are ya lil' bugger."

Darren took off the panel covering the manifold and checked all the fittings. Darren smiled as he found a loose one and tightened it. He scanned it again and was satisfied that it was back to normal.

Darren reattached the panel, got up, walked over to the com and pressed the button "Puro try it now."
