Now that we have X3 and with Superman Returns just around the corner, what are your picks for the best?

Mine, in order:
1) Superman The Movie
2) Batman
3) Superman 2
4) Spider-man
5) X-men
6) Daredevil (Director's cut only)

(I haven't seen X3 or SR yet, this list might change...)

Sorta almost in order.

I tend to like sequels better than originals, just 'cause the character introduction is out of the way and we can get on with the story.

And where the hell is Hellboy 2? I was promised Hellboy 2!

My favorite superhero movie of all time would have to be Spider-Man II. Let me see if I can make a bit of a formalized list here . . .

1. Spider-Man II
2. Spider-Man (What can I say, I'm one of Peter Parker's biggest fans)
3. X2
4. Batman Begins
5. X-Men

That's my list off the top of my head. I might end up changing things. I know they're all recent ones, so I hope I don't get in trouble for not going for the 'classics'. I think the original Batman would be my #6, though. I just think nobody really got the root of most superheroes until recently. Also, I really don't care for Superman as a superhero. WAY to infallible for me to find him interesting.

Oh - and a side note, when you do see X3, go in with low expectations. I wasn't very impressed at all. I really miss Bryan Singer. Hugh Jackman being badass was pretty much the only redeeming quality of that movie. I don't follow the comics, but my friend who I saw it with does and he was ready to start throwing chairs around after he saw what happened to 'his' characters.

Also, that's just one Browncoat's opinion.

I don't know why people didn't like X3. My only complaints are:

The lame humor. Come on, the jokes were for 8 year olds.

Juggernaut. Juggernaut's costume in particular. Kitty call's him a d***head and I busted out laughing because his helmet looks like one.

The lack of Sentinels.

Superman Returns is looking awesome.

Ghost Rider looks like it could be good also.

I'm kinda the opposite. I prefer an origin tale myself. Though having said that, X2 benefited from being able to get straight into the plot. Spidey 2 and Superman 2 I thought took their time a little too much. (Spidey 2 was a little disappointing for me at first because the trailer told so much of the story anyway, that I was waiting for it to get to the good bits)

If you've watched X-Men, I really do recommend you watch X2, its a hell of a lot better.

X3 is a good film - I'd say on par with X-Men, if not better.
The main problem I had with it is it takes a while to get into it - but it has some really shocking moments and an awesome battle.
The biggest problem with the trilogy though is Cyclops is a wasterd character - what's the point of having him if you're not going to use him. I expect Bryan Singer was saving him for the Phoenix story in X3... but since Singer didn't end up doing it... Like I said, wasted.
At least James Marsden is in Superman Returns. Hopefully he'll have something to do in that.

2. Spider-man 2 - great "comic book"-like action
3. Batman Begins - deeper story, and the dark knight
4. Superman - nostalgia
5. Batman - Jack baby!
6. X Men - I was dissapointed at first but

8. The Punisher - not the Dolph L. one , had some good one-on-one fighting in this, I was surprised it was as good as it was.

My point was that both were harmed by an establishement, and both wage a kind of one-man war against it - one outright and blatantly, the other a more private war. Just thought that Browncoats would draw the same connection I did.

Bit off topic but I wish the movie industry would leave Alen Moorses stuff alone. From Hell, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, V for Vendetta, all supreme examples of the art all turned into lack lustre movies. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that the movie version of Watchmen never surfaces.

I am surprised no Blade Fans. The film is much better than the comic. Blade 1 and 2 are very cool. Blade 3 is a bit ropey (even though Jessica Biel is in it). SO that doesn't get my vote. I also seen 1 Spawn vote. Spawn deserves more than 1 vote. Great film. I'll remove spiderman 2 and put Spawn in its place

Looks like we got some good superhero movies comin up with Superman Returns and Ghost Rider. Hopefully those will make the list.

well that trashes my top comic flicks which are as a rule non super....

1. V for Vendetta (just a burnt up nut in a mask)
2. Punisher (2004) (just a nut with guns)
3. Batman Begins (just a rich guy with a suit)
4. Sin City (just a bunch of guys beating people)
5. Mystery Men (guy with a shovel - guy with a fork - girl with a magic bowling ball making her technically non-super - guy with nasty gas...)

well maybe Sin City has a little super in it....

Also, I'm really hoping Superman Returns rocks my world, and I gotta say it looks likely. I've been a Superman junkie longer than I can remember.

Puni-what? I'm sorry I've read Punisher for 20 years and honestly I never saw a hint of Frank in Mal. Mal is dark - Frank is near psychotic. Mal does not seek revenge - he seeks escape. Frank seeks vengeance and revenge on thoise resposible and those like those responsible. In that respect Frank and Mal are polar opposites.

i like Frank. i like Mal. I also like pickles. And pistachio ice cream. Both are green but that doesn't mean there is a little pickle in my pistachio ice cream.

I would say it's a big improvement. It adds a lot more character to the movie, and an entire sub-plot that digs into Kingkin's organization, shows more of Matt being a Lawayer (in a good way) and gives Foggy (his partner) and Urich (the journalist) a lot more to do in the story. The actions scenes are also more brutal and violent in several places, justifying the pills DD pops through the movie a bit more.

There are also a few bits cut out, such as the redundant priest confessionals, and the love scene with Elekra. I think the movie would have been further improved by cutting some of the more outrageous CG leaping and swinging through the air bits, which they say on the DVD were dictated by the studion after the successs of Spider-Man.

But overall, while still having some flaws (like the over-done "Rose from the killer" bit, and the aforementioned bad CG shots), the Director's cut is a much better movie than the theatrical version.

i thought electra was hideous. v was a bastardization of moores book i grant - but i enjoyed it. elektra was a complete screw over of frank millers book... robocop 3 bad.... pink cadillac bad.... breakin' 2 bad.

Yeah the Shadow I particualrly thought was strong as he had previously been a very evil character in his past. That element I thought was ripe for a superhero.

I always enjoy my superhero's flawed and disturbed. Batman Returns did that for me aswell.

There's a scene where the circus gang are going around running amock, and two clowns are beating up this old woman. The camera follows this and then brings into frame Batman, who is just standng there watching, looking on. Then the clowns spot him and stop. Batman though doesn't engage in a fight until after the deed has been done. I always loved that detail, the fact that Batman wasn't about preventing a crime, but more about unleashing revenge, his own brand of revenge. Very significant point I thought in a superhero.

Which raises the question: What makes a superhero?

Is it simply a metahuman/mutant set of impossible powers or abilities? But that would exclude Batman, V, the Punisher, and a wide variety of comic book heroes who have no "powers" as such.

Is it the inherent righteousness and moral drive? Then how do we identify the anti-heroes? Where exactly is the defining line between a "superhero," an "anti-hero," and a "supervillain" (the defining question of DC's recent Infinite Crisis crossover, as I understand it*)?

i'd say that punisher is NOT a superhero... he is a vigilante... a hero but not a super.

nor batman....

nor V in my reading of him/her.

the xmen and spiderman - those with supernatural ability are superheroes.

mind you this isnt a knock at bats or frank - in fact i find non supers much more appealing.

anybody can fight crime if they are invulnerable.... but try it when you CAN be killed.

Although I have seen every super hero movie ever made, I only have 2 that qualify as the best of the best:
Superman, and Superman 2.

In my opinion most super hero movies have good things going for them, but on;y the first two Superman movies are epic. Pure magic from start to finish.
I hope to God Bryan Singer does a good job with Superman Returns. My expectations are very high.

Superhero movies I liked better that X3: The Incredible Hulk, The Punisher-early 90's w/Dolph Lundgren. In other words it may qualify for not only the worst Superhero movie I have seen, but possibly just flat out the worst movie I have seen in about a decade. I almost walked out of the theater halfway through, I never feel that way watching movies. Painfully bad.

I'm just watching Daredevil (directors cut) now and I just noticed Stan Lee has a cameo in it when Matt Murdock is a kid he puts his cane across a guy to stop him from crossing the road and that guy is Stan Lee :)

I like as well as get what you're saying. I'd prefer batman over superman anyday, however, their is a flaw in your distinction between superheroes and vigilantes. Superman is still a vigilante. So is any superhero (according to your definition as a person with paranormal abilities) who fights crime outside the justice system. I'd say that almost all of the charaters being discussed in this thread our vigilantes (even though they might not be descibed that one because the word carries such a negative connotation), the difference you're describing would be drawn along the lines of those who fight crime within the limits of a normal human being and those who have abilities that exceed those limits.

Anyway, I don't have a list yet, but Unbreakable would definitely sit at the top if I did.

p.s. i too enjoy Saffron in a carnal way....in fact if the series continued and she kept cropping up, i would have liked to see her hook up with Jayne. They'd make a great couple.
