Hmmm.....

Hard to tell much from that little bit. We don't even get a clear look at the transformer that attacks the probe.

They're not. This is just the teaser, footage here will not be in the actual movie. The current thought is that the TF in the vid is just some generic Decepticon (the head looks a little like Astrotrain, but he'd likely have more kibble).

This is basically the equivalent of that Godzilla add where he steps through the museum roof onto the T-Rex, or a less well-executed version of the River Tam Sessions.

The basic point was to drum up interest and show a glimpse of what to expect. Personally, I think the new look of the TFs is a little underwhelming (too skeletal, not enough armour or recognizable kibble). Hopefully they'll be a bit bulkier in the actual film.

(Also hopefully we'll be able to see them through Bay's directing. I'm getting nightmares of the Transformers being perpetually obscured through extreeeeeeeeeeeeeeeme close-ups and shakeycam.)

Yup. More and more, Serenity is looking like the last time anyone took any trouble with a script, didn't rely on flash, noise and CGI, didn't play safe and, blimey, ended up making a really decent film.

It'll be a long time before anyone has the guts to come as close.

But anyhow, there I go getting all morosified... Here's the best advert since Honda's "The Impossible Dream".

That's exactly what they want you to think.

Mars probes have been going missing under less-than-explicable circumstances for a while now, it's not out of the realm of possibility that "They" might send up something specifically intended to take a covert look around.

I'll give you the Soyuz-Fregat (the cost of using archival footage --someone didn't do their homework).

I'm actually not that worried about the script; all three writers (Rogers, Kurtzman, and Orci) have fairly good credentials (The Jackie Chan Adventures, Xena, Alias, MI:3, Legend of Zorro, etc.), and have demonstrated a good grasp of the material and respectable levels of wit. Obviously, they're nowhere near Joss' level, but they should be good enough.

To be fair, being the best Transformer story in years won't be that hard. Everything since Beast Wars has kinda sucked. Hard, at times. (*makes note to let you guys know when I'm finally ready to post my Transformers: Legacy fanfic series*)

I'm willing to treat the new look of the mechs as artistic interpretation (if I survived Manny Galan and Pat Lee, I can survive this).

What I'm worried about is Michael Bay's directing. I wanna actually see the Transformers, not just get split-second glimpses of a random arm, leg, or part of a head between the explosions and close-up motion-blurs.

(Remember what happened during that hovercycle chase in The Island? I don't, because I COULDN'T SEE ANYTHING.)

It would be nice, but Michael "Boom-Boom" Bay wasn't involved with BSG.

In all seriousness, I kinda doubt it; Transformers always has been and always will be a toyline first and a story second. The movie is kinda stretching that, but no one doubts that there'll be TF-movie toys on the shelf before the film opens.

It doesn't so much need to grow up, so much as it needs to stop being bad. Check out Beast Wars/Beast Machines, it was as toyetic as anything, but it had the best stories in any TF series ever (you could take the Axalon and Darkside's crews, make them human, and drop them into the 'verse, and they'd fit right in --Hell, Dinobot was probably a Browncoat in the war). The trouble is that the people behind the franchise (post Beast-era) seem to be just mailing it in, treating the shows as if no one really cares.

(And I'm not just saying this as a fanboy; I've spoken to young "target demographic" kids who feel the same way; recent shows are just embarassing to watch.)

It really bugs me when people look at the state of Transformers and blame it on "Japanime." Transformers isn't bad because it's animé, it's bad because it's bad animé.

What I wouldn't give for a TF series that looked/sounded/ran like Gundam Seed (imagine Optimus and Megatron duelling with beam sabers and sending swarms of missiles at each other as a huge ship-to-ship brawl rages all around them), or Fullmetal Alchemist (after Optimus' death, Hot Rod and Bumblebee struggle to unlock the secrets of the Matrix, and light Cybertron's darkest hour --with the Autobots themselves trying to stop them), or Macross Zero (Starscream versus Skyfire fighting from the stratosphere to the surface, with eye-bleeding speed and agility), or even Naruto (with its willingness to trade pacing for character development). Hell, season 3 of Digimon had better production values, writing, and dubbing than the last three TF series combined --and was more fun.

It's kinda disheartening, since the Transformers "metaverse" lends itself so perfectly to all the "Big Issues" that Sci-Fi as a genre was created to deal with.

-Transformers are machines, yet they live, feel, learn, and grow. They have souls --they know this because they can take them out, measure them, switch bodies, and even store prisoners disembodied. Humans however, do not. So where does that leave humanity? Are we ensouled beings, or merely bundles of organic tissue and knee-jerk reactions, deluding ourselves into thinking that we matter?

-Transformers have their own religion; a form of ditheism (two gods, as opposed to monotheism, which has one God and one Devil --while the monotheist devil's defeat is assured [monotheists struggle to save themselves --God doesn't need help], ditheism means that nothing is certain: both gods are evenly matched) centred around Primus (the Lord of Light, the Creator of Order) and Unicron (the God of Darkness, the Chaos-Bringer). According to legend, Primus created them, his children, to protect the Universe from Unicron. They are players in a cosmic struggle against absolute Evil, with the fate of infinite universes at stake. . . But there's also another legend, a heresy: that the Transformers were created by an alien race as "consumer products" --factory-built slaves (one line for public consumers, and another for military applications). They were programmed to be smart and adaptable, and they were. The early slaves banded together and rebelled, forcing the aliens to abandon their factory-world. Then the two product lines defaulted to their programming: one sought peace and advancement, the other dreamed of conquest and destruction of all perceived enemies. In this case, the Transformers are nothing more than accidents, their intelligence --their very consci
