Without a doubt, River, in Jaynestown:

"Bible's broken. Contradictions, false
logistics - doesn't make sense."

Shindig:

Mal: “Mercy is the mark of a great man. (stabs Atherton) Guess I'm just a good one. (stabs Atherton again) Well, I'm alright.”

Trainjob:

"You know what the chain of command is? It's the chain I go get and beat you with until you understand who's in ruttin' command here. "

Two of my favorites but really I like them all

Zoe: Oh yeah, this is gonna go great.

This has got to be one of the hardest decisions... I think my all time favorite is:

Mal: Ain't no way in the 'verse they can find that compartment even... even if they were looken for it
Zoe: Why not?
Mal: ... cause
Zoe: Oh yeah, this is gonna go great.
Mal: If anyone gets nosey, just shoot'em
Zoe: Shoot 'em?
Mal: Polietly

I was actually very surprised that no one had posted it before today. someone beat me by only a couple hours.
Another one that I really like that hasn't been posted yet is:

Jayne: Captin? Captin can you hear me?
Mal: I'm standin' right here.
Jayne: You're comin' in good and loud.
Mal: That's cuz I'm standin' right here.
Jayne: Well, yeah but... the transmitters...

OOH! and then I like: (off the top of my head, hope it's right)

Mal: I did a job, and I got nothin' but trouble since I did it, not to mention some unkind words as regrad to my character. So let me make this ubundantly clear: I do a job, and then I get paid. Go run your little world.

Other favs:

Book: If you take sexual advantage of her, you're
going to burn in a very special level of hell.
A level they reserve for child molesters and
people who talk at the theater.

Wash: What could it be, we're all doomed, who's flying this thing?!?! Oh, that would be me.

Mal: Public relations

Mal: If you got guests, I can come back later

Wash: Yes, this is a firtile land and we will thrive. We will rule over all this land and we will call it... This Land. I think we should call it Your Grave. Ahh, curse your sudden but enevitable betrayal. Ha, ha, ha- mine is an evil laugh- now die! Ahh, no God

Mal: Now you can luxuriate in a nice
jail cell, but if your hand touches metal, I swear by my pretty flowered bonnet, I will end you.

Need help on this one. I don't know exactly what she says.
River: (talking about Simon's birthday) caporial years... stellar- blah, blah jargon. *pause* I didn't get you anything.

And of coarse the theme song hast to count for something. It's just way too cool to ignore.

Take my love, take my land,
Take me where I cannot stand
I don't care, I'm still free
You can't take the sky from me.

Anyway, you all know the rest...
Oh! and I just came up with a very good one for my signature. I don't think anyone else is using it as a signature, but if you are... sorry.

Heh, I feel like an idiot. For some reason I just now got the rather obvious irony and foreshadowing there, given what happened later to Mal in "War Stories". Damn, this show sure ages well.

SergeantX

"..and here's to all the dreamers, may our open hearts find rest." -- Nanci Griffith

I don't know whether I should feel like an idiot, but I just made a realization about the last verse of the theme song:
There's no place I can be,
Since I found Serinity
At first I thought it was referring to the ship, but then I made the connection to the part when Zoe tells Simon about why Mal named the ship after the valley and the battle they lost there.
Once you're in Serenity, you never leave it. You learn to live there. Or something like that.
Did anyone else miss that?
Anyway, SergeantX, I didn't get that connection until you mentioned it.

Lets face it, most of the show can be quoted, its almost to the level of...dare I say it... Monty Python? Gee, I hope thats not blashemy for anyone here.....

It would have been more meaningful with that deleted scene included.

You would figure with that kind of mental scarring, Mal and Zoe would be plagued by shell-shock and nightmares. I guess there is the funny way they eat their apples.

Though it'd probably be easier to come up with a list of least favorite lines (since there aren't any), here's some great ones (I'm trying hard to mention ones that haven't already been quoted):

Mal, befuddled at Wash's insisting on coming along on a mission: I'm lost, I'm angry... and I'm armed.

Wash, about Zoe's terseness: Right. Less talking. She's terse. I can be terse. Once in flight school, I was laconic.

Jayne's crude assessment of River: It's a girl. She's cute, too, but I don't think she's all there, y'know? 'Course, not all of her has to be...

River, having trouble with her dessert: My food is problematic.

Jayne, eager to make use of his rehearsed dialogue: We applied the cortical electrodes but were unable to get a neural reaction from either patient.

Jayne, asking Mal not to reveal his attempted betrayal of Simon and River: Make something up. Don't tell 'em what I did.

River freaking out over Book's voluminous hair, Zoe trying to help:
BOOK
River? Why don't you come out?

RIVER
No! I can't. Too much hair.

ZOE
Uh huh. River, honey? He's putting the
hair away now.

RIVER
It'll still be there....waiting.

Hey, canttakesky:
I think you misunderstood what painisscary said (you sniped the initial sentence too quickly).

painisscary said:
"Though it'd probably be easier to come up with a list of least favorite lines (since there aren't any), here's some great ones"

In other words, you two agree...

On a side note, when I started this thread way back in November (a hundred and eleven posts ago), I apparently didn't realize just how amazingly quotable just about every line of Firefly is. This is a testament and a huge compliment to Joss and his band-o-writers.

The whole set of exchanges between Book and River in Jaynestown is pretty hilarious. While I like River's explanation of how the Bible is "broken" best, this line (about Book's hair) is also brilliant:

They say the snow on the roof was too heavy.
They say the ceiling will cave in. His brains
are in terrible danger.

ZOE

hair away now.

OK, here's another great River quote, from Shindig:

(spoken with Badger's accent)

Sure, I got a secret. More than one. Don't seem likely I'd tell 'em to you now, do it? Anyone off Dyton Colony knows better than to talk to strangers. You're talking loud enough for the both of us though, ain'tcha? I've known a dozen like you. Skipped off home early, running graft jobs here and there. Spent some time in the lock down, but less than you claim. And you're what? Petty thief with delusions of standing? Sad, little king of a sad, little hill.

lol, your signature reminded me of another funny line in the show: (sorry if its not exact)

It must have taken a dozen slaves and a dozen days to get you into that get up, of coarse your daddy tells me it takes the wink of a school boy to get you out of it again.

The two times Simon uses the phrase "This must be what going mad feels like."

Jayne:"Are YOU about to jump onto a moving train?"

River:"I can kill you with my brain."

Book:"You can't kill this man."
Jayne:"Not right away."

and the vote for the serious line:
Jayne:"Don't tell 'em what I done."

Keep on walkin', Preacher-man.

I love reading favourite lines -- and luckily (or not, depending on how carried away I get) I just finished watching my shiny new DVD set today!
I'll try not to repeat, and sorry if I don't get something precisely word-for-word.
BTW, I also am a big fan of stuff that sounds great taken completely out of context. But I'll go ahead n credit em.

"Haven't you killed me enough?" (Mal)

"You're using wiles on me!" (Mal)

"Lady, you're my kind of stupid." (er..Mal again)

"Jayne? Jayne Cobb?" (Inara, on finding out who the hero of Canton is)

"Jayne is a girl's name." (River)

"I'll stay out of your whorin' and you stay out of my thievin'." (Mal..seems to be a trend)

I think I have too many screaming around my brain right now. I'll narrow em down and come back later.

Wow, that was quick...

"The pitter patter of tiny feet in huge combat boots." (Mal)

"Captain'll come up with a plan."
"Well, that's good... right?"
"Possibly you're not recalling some of his previous plans." (Zoe & Kaylee)

"Ship like this, be with you til the day you die."
"That's because it's a deathtrap." (Mal & Zoe)

"..and I've made myself ready for you."
"Let's ride right past the part where you explain exactly what that means." (Saffron & Mal)

Its getting late, and so I scanned the posts, so apologies if I missed these -

The moment for me that manages to define the Simon/River relationship perfectly -

"I threw up...."
"I threw up on your bed"
"That's my sister"

Okay, its a great deal to do with the acting, but the layers it works on amaze me.

On that level, Objects in Space - pretty much all of it as a fantastically constructed script - River's "surrender" - "I'll be your bounty, Jubal Early". Add to that Early's terrifying speech to Kaylee, the "lion" exchange and "we're becoming fast friends". Wasn't this the "wacky fun" episode as well?

I've always liked:

Zoe: Doesn't the bible have some pretty spicific things to say about killing?
Book: Yes, but it's fuzzy on the area of knee caps.
(war stories)

Zoe: Jayne!?
Jayne: I didn't fight in no war. Best of luck though
(train job)

Mal: We've got some local color hapening...a grand entrance would not go amis.
(train job)

Wash: Aww, we always hoped you two'd get together, who is she?
(our mrs. reynolds)

Mal: she's not my wife!
safferon starts crying
Kaylee goes to her: Oh, there there, he's a monster
(our mrs. reynolds, not sure if i got that one quite right)

Simon (to jayne): your like a trained ape...without the training.
(serenity)

Wash: ok, everybody not talking about sex, in here. everybody else, out there!

All-time fav Firefly quotes? Hard to choose just 1, so I'm gonna do 5 that I love:

#1 - "Too much hair" - River
#2 - "Kaylee? What the hell's going on in the engine room? Were there monkeys? Some terrifying space monkeys maybe got loose?" - Mal
#3 - "You like ships. Don't seem to be
looking at the destinations. What
you care about is ships and mine
is the nicest." - Kaylee
#4 - "Every man there go back inside or
we will blow a new crater in this
little moon." - Wash
#5 - "He took this right off 'em. They
earned that with the sweat of their
slave-tradin' brows." - Mal

I love that last quote, mainly because of the way Nathan Fillion delivers it. It's also very reminiscent of a couple of his lines in "The Train Job".

***
Badger: If you'd gotten here sooner, you might've beaten the bulletin that came up saying a rogue vessel, classification 'Firefly', was spotted pulling illegal salvage on a derelict
transport.

I love how Mal refers to the sky as his, like in these two quotes:

Mal: Its getting crowed under my sky.
Mal: Wash, I would like my sky to be a little less empty.

It fits well with the theme song and Mal's cowboyish personality. You know what I mean, when some cowboys refer to a town as their town, their territory. Thats what Mal is doing; the sky is his territory. I love Mal.

This doesn't really count as a line (more like, several), but it's hilarious:

Mal's asking Niska's main guy to take the money back to him.

Niska's guy: Keep the money. Use it to buy a funeral. It doesn't matter where you go, or how far you fly. I will hunt you down, and the last thing you see will be my blade.

Mal: Darn.

Mal kicks the guy and he's sucked out through the engine. Next Niska guy is brought forward.

Another good one is when Mal is being kept overnight by Atherton Wing pending the duel at dawn. Badger's gang is keeping watch on the Serenity crew. After our guys craft their plan and are waiting for the diversion they were going to create, River has a conversation with Badger mimicking his accent. Everyone watches in fascination. Afterward, Jayne says, "That there? Just the kind of di-version we could have used."

Like I always say, ya gotta love Jayne!

So I've got about 2,000 favorites (give or take) but here's a minor comminglation of them:

Wash: "Did he just go crazy and fall asleep?"

Zoe: "Sir, I think you have a problem with your brain being missing."

Mal: "Were there monkeys? Some terrifying space monkeys maybe got loose in the engine room?"

Tracey: "When you can't run no more you crawl. When you can't do that, you find someone to carry you."

Mal: "If your hand touches metal, I swear by my pretty floral bonnet I will end you."

Book: "If you take sexual advantage of her, you're going to burn in a very special level of Hell, a level they reserve for child molesters and people who talk at the theater."

Jayne: "Pain is scary"

River: "He looks better in red."

Mal:"We're not gonna die, you hear me? And you know why? Because we are so very PRETTY. We are just too pretty for God to let us die."

Kaylee: "Yessir, Captain Tight-Pants!"

Jayne: "Dear diary, today I was pompous and my sister was crazy. Today we were kidnapped by hill-folk, never to be seen again. It was the best day ever."

Zoe: "Take me sir, take me hard."

River: "Sad little king of a sad little hill"

Simon: "This must be what going mad feels like."

Simon: "no, THIS must be what going mad feels like."

Inara: "Every well bred, petty crook knows that the small, concealable weapons always go to the far left of the place setting."

And finally, I can't believe, no one has put these up!!

River (HoG): Who do you think is in there?

NANDI: "You gonna remember where everything
goes?"
MAL: "Let's just say I plan to take it real
slow."

Mal: "Yup, that went well."

and finally, Inara in Trash:
Inara: "You know, I put on this big act and
storm away in a huff, then I fly off,
wait for you to doublecross Mal, beat
you to the rendezvous spot and grab
the loot before you can get to it. What, you didn't see it coming? You know, I'm a little disappointed. Some of the crew's performances
weren't quite as nuanced as they
could have been. I thought they might
tip the fact that we were playing you
from the second Mal took you out of
that crate. Oh, well guess not."

Inara: "Should I start with the part where
you're stranded in the middle of
nowhere, or the part where you have
no clothes?"

The last scene of Shindig, when Mal and Inara are sitting on the catwalk in the hold and Inara says "Besides, how could I leave Serenity?" and then the next camera shot reveals the hold full of cows...

The last twenty minutes of Shindig were my first Firefly experience and I fell in love right away. Luckily the DVD set came in the week after.

'd You say only one quote? I must have misread... Thought you meant 100...

Some Simon quotes:

Simon to Jayne: "Enemies? You? No! How can that be!"

"I always thought the name Serenity had a vaguely funereal sound to it."

Mal: "I need that in captain dummy talk."

Mal: "Next time you stab me in the back, have the guts to do it to my face."

Mal: "One of you's gonna fall and die, and I'm not cleaning it up!"

Inara: "Do aliens live among us?"
Kaylee: "Yes. One of them's a doctor."

Mal: "However I might slip, you're not going to catch my crew with their pants down."

Mal whispering to Jayne: "How drunk was I last night?"
Jayne: "I don't know, I passed out."

Mal: "I take it you're not overburdened with an abundance of schooling."

Monty: "I shaved off my beard for you, devil woman!"

Mal: "Don't strain your brain trying. It might break something."

Mal: "We're deep in space, corner of No and Where."

River: "And Early, Serenity is very unhappy..."

Nandy: "I've been waiting to kiss you ever since I showed you my guns."

Badger: "Thought we might have a bit of a sit-down."
Mal: "I prefer a bit of a piss-off."

Jayne: "This place gives me an uncomfortableness."

The next scene is one of my favourites since it takes the piss on all the "hero's revenge" scenes in genre flix. Mal's fighting one of Niska's minions just outside Niska's office. Jayne's raising his gun to shoot the minion.

Zoe: "Jayne, this is something the captain has to do himself." Jayne lowers his gun.
Mal: "No! No it's not!"
Zoe: "Oh" and she, Jayne and Wash start blasting the minion who falls to a sticky end.

And I can type down the whole Our Mrs. Reynolds episode for quotes... That is such a funny episode!

OMR: Mal- well my days of taking your seriously are deffenitely coming to a middle.

Serenity: Mal- i do the job and then I get paid. Go run your little world. ( my favorite)

Mal: This job I would do for free.

Zoe: Well in that case, can I have your share?

Mal: No.

Zoe: If you die, can I have your share?

Mal: Yes.

"Trash", after Inara calls Mal a petty thief:

Frankly, Jubal Early supplied the strongest, most creepifying dialogue throughout OiS, but I particularly like his exchange with Simon:

I thought he said "Well you can already see I have" I mean it makes more sense. He's holding a gun to the guy and taking the part for free.

These are my favourite quotes that have already been mentioned:

1. Mal: One of you is gonna fall and die and I’m not cleaning it up!
(War Stories)

2. Mal: Ah the sound of tiny feet in huge combat boots.
(War Stories)

3. Wash: Yes, this is a fertile land and we will thrive. We will rule over all this land and we will call it... This Land. I think we should call it Your Grave. Ahh, curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal. Ha, ha, ha- mine is an evil laugh- now die! Ahh, no God
(Serenity)

4. River: They say the snow on the roof was too heavy. They say the ceiling will cave in. His brains are in terrible danger
(I think Jaynestown)

5. Mal: "And you're supposed to make me look respectable."
Kaylee: "Yes sir, Captain Tight-Pants!
(Shindig)

6. Dobson: "Alright, I can see you're not an idiot."
Jayne: "Well I wish I could say the same for you Lawrence, but... this is just disappointing as hell."
(Serenity)

This one hasn’t yet been posted

ZOE: Captain'll come up with a plan.
KAYLEE: That's good, right?
ZOE: Possible you're not recalling some of his previous plans.
(Safe)

And this one is so adorable. Even though it was never made I just love it.

From Jaynestown -
Wash: We gotta go to the crappy town where I'm a hero!

Jayne: I think I really made a difference in their lives. Me, Jayne Cobb.
Mal: I know your name jackass.

From Shindig -
Zoe: If I were gonna wear a dress, I'd want one with some slink.
Wash: You want a slinky dress? I'll buy you a slinky dress. Captain, can I have some money for a slinky dress?
Jayne: I'll chip in.

I love the way the entire cast is cracking up around him and he just keeps going.

There are so many great lines in the Serenity outtakes. The whole "I do NOT NEED A BACK SPACESHIP DRIVER" scene is classic too. And "TRAAAPP!!!"

One that really made it to the screen:

It'll still be there....waiting.

I believe it goes like this:

River: "No. Can't. Too much hair."
Zoe: "River, honey, he's putting the hair away now."
River: "Doesn't matter. It'll still be there, waiting."

in "Our Mrs. Reyonlds", Mal discovering "Saffron" is to cleve to him...
"To wubba who?"
Love that.
That could be why it's under my name. I heart redundancy.
What can I say, I heart redundancy.

Don't make faces.

Anger on one side, sadness on the other.
Nobody knows about the third side.

i have alot of favorite lines :) but i have to agree with the earlier person that posted this bit.

from the train job: zoe and mal just past through a car full of alliance guys. zoe and mal have a short conversation about whether it concerns them and mal tells zoe it only makes it more fun. then zoe says

"sir, i think you have a problem with your brain being missing."

hehe, i loved that. the look on her face when she said it was great. you can tell they had alot of fun doing that show. another great quote was from jayne:

"if wishes were horses we'd all be eatin steaks"

man... i could list about 50 of them :) breaks my heart that the show was cancelled. firefly was about as entertaining as tv gets.

Hey, I've got a favourite nobody's mentioned yet!

Mal: You're making out like Zoe just blindly follows my every word, and that ain't true.
Wash: Sure it is.
Mal: Not so. There've been plenty of orders of mine she didn't obey.
Wash: Name one!
Mal: She married you!

(War Stories)

Later in the episode:

Mal: You want me to sleep with her [Zoe]? That make you feel better?
Wash: It might...
Mal: Imagine it'd do wonders for her too.
Wash: Screw you!
Mal: Get in line!

Hilarious, especially given the context.

Hehe, I love Tom Lehrer.

For the record, my fave quote has got to be.
"you're going to fall and crack your skulls and I'm not going to clean up the mess."

Or
"Why are we discussing what's already been decided?"

or

"Your mouth is talking, might want to see to that."

I use them on my students all the time.
