We seem to like characters that "misbehave". Lets see what we can come up with. Try to keep it sci-fi.

Gius Baltar (BSG)....Deception, disloyalty, dishonesty all done with a character that is quite like-able...shiny indeed.

Ok, a bit obvious, and he ultimately turned to be a good guy...

Han Solo. He is a scoundrel after all.

At age 7, when I first saw starwars, I knew Luke was supposed to be the big hero but I wanted to be Han.

I was 8 when I saw it - and I, too, wanted the not-so-squeaky-clean to be a BDH!

I always loved to hate Avon too (think I had my first 'fantasy' about him.... Where did my youth go?)

Brody & Doyle (sorry, not so sci fi) from The Proffessionals or the most obvious - Spike!! And I mean even before the whole doin' Buffy phase... getting a soul thing!

Love you (still blushing though) - Magdalena x x

Ok I'll weigh in. I happen to root for Dr. Gaius Baltar as well & Six (can't forget Six) (((shiver))) Siiiiiixxxx....... Oh yeah, and I highly doubt either one will get anything but worse.

If you consider Sci-FI / Fantasy then I would also add Spike from Buffy (though I prefer him in Angel Season 5)

and Spike - Cowboy Bebop

and Mugen - Samurai Champloo

Ok I'm done for now.

bit of a stretch but I love pushing the envelope I'd have to say Dr. Gregory House.

Ok now I'm done....really.

Ignoring those mentioned previously, and some of these aren't so much "bad guys" as "chaotic good," but:

Capt. Jack Sparrow
Capt. Barbossa

Capt. Mackenzie Calhoun
Xyon (the Star Wars equivalent of Han Solo)
Gul Dukat
Tom Paris
Shran (from Enterprise)

Talon Karrde
Lando Calrissian
Jaina "Sticks" Solo (When she turned to the Dark Side in NJO)
Nom Anor
Nen Yim
Saba Sebatyne

Tyr Anasazi (Of the Kodiak Pride, out of Victoria by Barbarossa)

Batou (from Stand-Alone Complex)

Kakashi-sensei (from Naruto)

InuYasha
Sesshoumaru
Miroku
Kagura
Kikyo
Naraku
Kouga also qualifies, but I'm not overly fond of him. He's too much of a jerk, not enough redeeming qualities.

Anybody seen the fanvid "Miroku's Guide to Buddhism?" It lists the tenets of proper Buddhist behaviour, while showing how Miroku cheerfully violates every single one (repeatedly, in some cases).

Some obscure 'chaotic good' ones....

Xris (Mag Force 7, Margaret Weis)
Colonel Fitzhugh, Ariel, Eamon, Fal, Pistol, and Chip (Rats, Bats, And Vats, Dave Freer and Eric Flint)

One bad group from the same book...

The Mag'h

And of course...

ANGELUS

As for classic bad/misbehaving guys how about Dracula:)
my favorites would be:
Constantine
Blade
Dorian Gray ( in League of Extraordinary Gentlemen)
Riddick

Angelus and Spike have both been mentioned, but if we're going with Buffy/Angel baddies then my all time favourite is Drusilla. Evil, cruel, romantic, intelligent, powerful, psychic and utterly insane. TV heaven! (In a hellish way ... obviously ... )

Son of Mackenzie Calhoun (so technically it'd be "Xyon Calhoun" or "Xyon of Calhoun," since Calhoun is the place on Xenex where Mak's from). He turns up in the New Frontiers novels. He's like Han Solo as a twenty-something kid (brash, hot-headed, and prone to spectacularly bad judgement). His ship is called the Lyla, and it has one of the most advanced AIs in the galaxy (about at pre-emotion chip Data's level, not Doc Hologram, 'cause he's a fluke), and a holographic avatar/love-bot.

I just love how Barbossa gets started on a scheme, Jack warns him that it might be a bad idea, Barbossa yells at him and goes on. . . then (miserably) stops himself and grudgingly asks Jack what the problem is.

(It's 'cause he knows Jack's smarter than him, and he's too careful to just charge in.)

I don't really know if this applies, but Dave Lister from Red Dwarf. He's slobbish, disgusting, rude, but somehow you become endeared to him. Or maybe just I do, I love his character! Ummm, I can't think of another at the moment. Maybe John Crichton from Farscape, he actually quite reminds me of Mal, but in a different setting, and with aliens He's not exactly a criminal but he's always getting into some sorta trouble.

*Edit* I see I got beaten to mentioning Crichton.
