Some of the Houston Area Browncoats are working the current Shuttle and Station Mission and they got the Captain's quote about love uplinked to the ISS crew in tomorrow morning's daily summary. Below is the review copy of the daily summary.

My source does not know if he can get PAO to release the document, but if anyone wants to request it from the JSC PAO office the document is (he thinks that is the correct office to request it from icon_biggrin.gif )

Always been a fan of the space program. I have been intereted in the STS missions since I was old enough to know what they were. I attended SPace Camp back in 1987, and after that followed the space program almost religiously after that. I cried at the loss of the Challenger and Columbia crews, and cheered both times we made it back into space. I actually spent most of the 4th of July watching the launch while everyone else was playing pool and blowing things up!

Does anyone still have the Nasa channel? Is that still around? We had it in NC during the first Mars missions. It was almost like one of those local gov't channels. (on some times, not others)

Oh, this is shiny news!

My father introduced me to the "dream of the stars"... read: Nasa and the space program when I was young. My Mom and Dad were both followers of each launch and supporters of whatever needed to be done to get "out into the black"! They lead us children well. I watched the moonwalk all those years ago now and have watched every shuttle launch and failure ( my heart goes out to all the brave astronauts who lost their lives and their families, from the beginning to the most recent loss )

My daughter and I were just talking about how when we were in Branson, supposed to be on vacation, we were holding up folks watching the coverage of the launch troubles because we were concerned and how we rejoiced when it launched!

I can't think of a better thing for the folks up there to hear than our Cap'n's words about flyin'!

My daughter and I were just talkin' just now.. the shuttle is like our beloved ship more than a little.... stuff falls off, bad things happen, but their respective crews just keep flyin'!

That may be why I am so in love with Firefly...it's not the super-modern, nothing-ever-goes-wrong spacecraft...it flies by love and the devotion of those who live in her...kinda like our space program, 'cept without the huge ground crew, the years of training...hmm. Well, the parallel works in my mind!

So, for now, we are back into the black, with more flights scheduled for the future. Let us all keep our hopes up that this mission is a success.

On the launch day of the Challenger in 1986, I had stayed home from school to watch it take off. I was "sick", so I had to stay in bed, but I watched the launch. It was unbelievable. I had seen launches before, and this did not look right. Even after the explanations, I was having a hard time grasping the concept that we had just lost a crew and a shuttle. Still gives me a pang when I think about it.

This is wonderful! Thanks for sharing.

I'm keeping an eye on the shuttle (well, figuratively anyway) and hoping the problem with the power unit will be resolved. My hat's off to all of the astronauts who have such dangerous but spectacular jobs, and who take the risks willingly. They're an awesome bunch.

I hope we'll hear their response to the quote.

Just out of curiousity is there a website for the civilian space program ( I guess that's what it's called.)

I disagree with the general sentiment .... It's lightyears beyond shiny.

I know I fell in love with NASA and the space shuttle when Columbia had it's first mission and landing. I can tell you how everyone I know was following the Challenger mission for two major reasons (McAlluffe and Onizuka) ...and how crazy the day was when we found out that blew up in flight. I remember my reaction when I heard that Columbia was destroyed -- numbness and disbelief. I seriously wanted to become an astronaut at one point and was really upset that I was automatically excluded from qualifying (horribly nearsighted female here).

Tristan: Space Camp? In Alabama? My sister was in space camp (I was in space academy) in '88. It was probably one of the longest, coolest weeks of my life! If I could scrape up the cashy money (and the time for it) I would sign myself up for the college credit course that's available (if it's still around).

As for the space program, try watching The Right Stuff, movie made back in the early 80s. The music is epic! The movie is epic! It was robbed at Oscar time, sorta like..well watch it and see. I love it. Based on a book by Tom Wolfe, it explores the genesis of the space program. You should also check out info regarding Chuck Yeager, talk about a geninue hero! The man is amazing!

I went to Kennedy Space Center when I was 5, WAY back when. I remember actually getting to go inside the MASSIVE Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB). The scale of everything is immense. The place is so huge, clouds actually formed inside. They had to put in special units to handle that. Don't get to go inside now, but to go there, and go to the Apollo area, see those HUGE rockets..its humbling. Real humbling when you look in one of those capsules, and realize how much courage it had to take to go up in one when it looks so primitive.

As for Nasa Browncoats, I can't say I'm in the least surprised!

One more thing..

A favorite story I heard about the Apollo program, one of the astronauts said, and I'm paraphrasing, "everyone kept saying, to the moon! to the moon! we kept saying, and back! and back! The and back part was REAL important!"

As for going inside the VAB, it was a LONG time ago. I envy you seeing a shuttle launch. It's on my list of things I want to do in my lifetime!

My 16-year old daughter said she found a Jayne t-shirt, with pic and the quote, "Let's be bad guys", at Hot Topic. I don't know what that's got to do with anything, other than to indicate that we're still growing on this culture...

As to the Columbia disaster, every so often a news bureau will try to sneak the archive footage onto T.V. I have to quickly avert my eyes. I simply cannot watch it happen again...

The closest thing I can compare it to is going to work one September morning and finding my co-workers variously crying or cursing (or both) and then seeing the second airliner strike the other WTC tower...

Both events, viewed live, just knocked the wind right out of my body.

As a child of the 1960's I've always watched the space program and eagerly watched the launch July 4.

The NASA channel is on in Raleigh on TimeWarner Cable. I've seen it several times when visiting my brother. Also, we just gotten DISH network satellite TV and it's on that service too if you have the 180 channel service and maybe the 120 channel service too. I've watched it several times during this mission.

Does anyone know when they will be woken up? I'd love to DVR it. It's great that the BDM will be honored that way.

We may never get a Shuttle Serenity, but perhaps when the new space program opens in New Mexico (which is only an hour away from me)we can still have Serenity flying in the black.

I'm surprised no one has remembered Adam's old series "The Cape"! That was a great show - I was lucky to catch a few episodes when it was on tv. Favorite scene: Adam as Jack Riles leading a group of astronaut candidates on a run acroos the beach - short shorts and a very loose Air Force tanktop - a more muscles than you can shake a stick at!

I've got to put up a better antenna so I can listen to the Shuttle downlink audio that is put out over a ham radio repeater in the Atlanta area. Pretty common thing for hams to do, so look for it if you're on 2 meters.

And what I REALLY need to upgrade for is so I can talk to the astronauts while they're on the ISS. Many of them are hams and will chat with people in their downtime, and that's just freaking cool.

Bouncing signals off of the OSCAR sattelites would be cool....oh, lets just be honest. I just plain want to buy better equipment. I also want to quit my job, so I've got a bit of a conflict going on.

We all hope. But for those who don't know, hopefully no one, there was a shuttle named Enterprise, but it was never sent to space and I think it's in the Smithsonian now.

The shuttle landing was awsome but I still liked the Return to Space mission way better, night landings rule. GO CALIFORNIA!!!!!! Hmmm sorry bout that little outburst. Oh and they next shuttle launch may be late next month.

The Love Speech *and* they got down
safely, which I was really worried about.

When the shuttles are up I like to
listen to hear what each day's "wakeup"
music is. I always hope one day we'll
hear something from FF/S.

Before I saw the show I thought Serenity,
which had been described as a rust-bucket,
might be like Mir in its later days --
junky, moldy, leaky -- but thank gosh it
wasn't that bad. ::-)

See, the key is to get this tiny tidbit of information to the news media. What better way to get people interested than saying that our show is NASA and astronaut approved. It would make a nice addition at the end of an ABC news or Entertainment Tonight broadcast.

it hasnt till I posted it now, I hope people wont mind. I loved this and really uber shiny. I have always been fascinated by Space and the wonders we can encounter when we go out there and just know there is some attempts at getting out there makes me happy!

I just think this is so shiny and I just want everyone to know!

I've loved the idea of going to the stars since I was very young. I love that they have our old battle scarred shuttle back up and running!
And the fact that for one morning the astronauts heard those beautiful words from our Captain.. makes me so proud.

i think a good way to draw attention to it is to write and request a copy of it

Here is NASA's main public e-mail and all the information needed concerning the little snippet.

I suggest writing a brief e-mail to them showing your excitement for the firefly qoute getting used etc. Make it positive and be sure to drop the word Firefly or Serenity or both!

NASA TV is available on DirecTV, channel 376. Had it on the entire week after the successful launch. Watched most of the EVAs including the repair experiments. Much higher quality than the web site feeds.

Regarding the original thread, I had no doubt there were Browncoats in their ranks. Remember, many of them ARE Texans. They are also dreamers of the future that could be as most of the key personnel that work (or contract) for NASA can, no doubt, make more money in the private sector. They obviously love what they are doing.

I wonder when they'll use the theme song from Firefly for the crew wakeup song?

Well, in regards to how many browncoats in NASA, here is what my NASA browncoat source said,

" Browncoat Flight Controllers working both station and shuttle were able to convince the ISS Planning Flight Director, as recent convert to Firefly, that the quote would be a great inspiration to the crew as the International Space Station finally returns to three fulltime crew members with the addition of Flight Engineer Thomas Reiter who arrived aboard Space Shuttle Discovery."

Also, at one of the Early Serenity Screenings NASA folks took up 2 rows in the theater in Houston

ok even better idea of the browncoat numbers in NASA,

my browncoat NASA buddy just posted this over on serenitymovie.org:

"oh there are a bunch of us know. when show aired there was just myself and another guy in our group of 15 flgiht controllers. But since the DVD's came out we have converted all but one in our group, plus a couple of division chiefs, flight directors and others. we keep spreading the word. after all my discussions with our PAO during the shift about if anyone called the PAO newsdesk requesting the document and such she is now going to check out the show and movie. another flight controller who has had one of my dvd loaner sets for months now finally started watching them before he came into shift the other day. he is liking it and has been asking questions the past few nights as we sit in Mission Control."

oh and heads up looks like our lil show may get sent on a iss mission :) its not a go yet, so do not get your hopes up buut... :) still shiny

Hey, both my husband and I came in through the BDM. We watched the series afterwards on the recommendation of a friend, but the BDM was definitely our point of entry. So that's two at least.

Part of my point, in a way.
You saw BDM but even so, it took the reco of a friend to get you into the series.

The demo we can't detect is who didn't like the
BDM but would have liked the series had they
seen it first.

Ah, you do have a point there. Nearly all the Browncoats I know were converted by another Browncoat originally. Actually (getting way off topic now), it'd be interesting to make a great big chart of Browncoats, trace back who converted who, all the way back up to... those who saw it when it was originally on, I suppose. (And I have an excuse there: I was working crazy overnight hours and planning my wedding during Firefly's entire run, so I didn't watch any tv at all. )

TV -- I don't have one, so had to do the DVD
thang).
What a nifty idea: Browncoat "genealogy!"
I can imagine it would look like the branching
of a computer program which I saw laid out all
over a (huge) wall during a big conversion
project some years ago.
Or the Anne Rice description of the genealogy
on the wall in one of her books, a little hairier
and more sinuous.

I'm a convert of the third degree at the very least. I know who converted the people who converted me, but I'd have to go to her and see if she saw the show when it was on, or if she herself was converted by someone else.

It would be a messy, messy genealogy. Probably more akin to vampire sires than to actual genealogy! Quite tempting to try though...

Very, very intriguing.

Wish I'd not thought of that computer chart,
though. That was a nightmare time I'd tried
with modest success to over-write out of
memory. Large two-story room. Hung all over
the East wall, a covering of fanfold greenbar.
Against the wall, a ladder. Mechanical
pencils, straight-edges, an erasing
machine. On the paper, a great, branching
chart, all the "where does it go"s with
notes on the "what does it do"s in miniature lettering.
Trying to stitch together dozens of
pre-existing modules (custom-tweaked, natch)
into a functioning whole, said whole intended
to replace something *which already worked.*
Running through the project like a gold
thread in a tapestry was the deep conviction
of the underlings that here there were blind leading blind.

Still not sure how we survived it, but we
did. Heh.

(Being anal right back atcha....) Yep, the definition Webster's gives for the noun "keen" is "a lamentation for the dead uttered in a loud wailing voice or sometimes in a wordless cry." The verb form is the uttering of same. I've seen other dictionaries that define it as a "mournful wail," which I think is probably the closest to how it's being used here.
