Images

First of all, the image must be somewhere on the net. Many people use Photobucket ( http://photobucket.com/). The image must be in a format the site can read. I know that .png images will not work. If the image is in a .png format, you can use an image manipulation program (MS Paint, Photoshop, etc.) to change the image to a .gif or .jpg format.

Images can be taken from existing websites. You may need to save the image to your computer and upload it somewhere on the web because some webmasters don’t allow hotlinking (direct linking to images) or the website may be changed and your image may disappear.

Getting Images From The Web

Let’s post the picture of Joss from the FireFoxFans.net home page.

In Firefox, Right-click on the image, go to “Copy Image Location” and click. This puts the address of the image in your clipboard.

In Internet Explorer, right-click on the image and take your curser to “Properties” and left-click.

A “Properties” box will pop up.

With your curser, highlight the Address: (URL) and right-click (or right click on the address and go to Select All).

Take the curser to “Copy” and left-click.

This puts the address of the image in your clipboard.

Posting the Image

Now that you have the image address, go to the thread where you want to place the image. Right-click inside the “Your Response” box. A pop-up box will appear.

Take the curser down to “Paste,” left-click, and the image address should appear.

A note…this method only works at Fireflyfans.net. On most web sites, the use of “image tags” is required.

Posting an Image From Photobucket

Note...Photobucket has recently changed so all you need to do is left click the URL LINK you want and the link will be copied to your clipboard. Then follow the instructions in Posting the Image.

If you have a Photobucket account (or are “borrowing” an image), go to the image.

Left-click on the “Url” address to highlight…

Right-click to bring up the pop-up box and left-click on copy.

Then follow the instructions in Posting the Image.

Avatars

Recently a couple of our members discovered a way to allow us to have our own avatars!

Avatar images are different from other images you can post on FFF.net because they require the use of image tags. Image tags are characters around the image link that allow the image to be seen.

The image tags that are needed for avatars are before the image link (no spaces) and after the image link (again, no spaces).

Posting the Avatar

Go to “MY FIREFLY” and then to “EDIT PROFILE” under “MEMBER OPTIONS.” In the “Tag:” box, enter the image link with the image tag. You can also add text.

You also need to choose the “None” option under the “Avatar” section. The original avatar you chose may still show up until you clear your browser cache.

This is me trying to test this out. Does it work the same way with signatures? Do we need the IMG tag to post pictures in thread and/or signatures? It seems we don't according to the tutorial but I'm just making sure, 'cause I'm easily confused. :)

Hey just thought i'd let you know; if you want to save time, rather than go to the properties and so forth you can right click and go to copy image location then paste that in your comment. This may only be with Firefox though, i'm not sure.

LA, the clipboard is just a computer term. It means... Well, it means you copy something, and the clipboard is just a term for what's holding what you last copied. You don't need to find it, you just do a paste command and there it is! Does that make sense?

Photobucket has somehow worked it so that clicking in any of the little boxes that give URLs, image tags, or html tags automatically copies it without you having to enter the command yourself. I do not know how they did this, but they did, so all you have to do is the paste command wherever you want to put it. Paste command is either pressing Ctrl and V at the same time, right clicking for the pop-up menu and clicking on paste, or going to the edit menu at the top of the window and selecting paste. Ctrl+V is my preferred command because it's just faster. I'm a keyboard person more than a mouse person (unless I'm playing games, but I'm trying to keep it simple) so it's a matter of preference.
Stop worrying about the clipboard. Do not focus on the clipboard. The clipboard isn't real, it's just a computer term. You do not need to find the clipboard or use the clipboard, you just need the paste command (and in some places that aren't photobucket, the copy command, which on the keyboard is Ctrl+C if you're wondering)

3. Right Click /Copy the TOP line that appears under the pic
(The URL link)

Depends on where and how your pics are hosted. If the pic has a generated URL link, try that. If it ONLY has a generated [img] tag line it won't work here. Most of us use photobucket because it is free, so easy, and so very very pretty.

Since you aren't using photobucket, I can't tell you how to resize it. (Which is why we were telling you to use photobucket...)

Go over to Troll Country (pick any thread) for testing purposes. Don't test here, hon! You can test anything over there and it won't post onto any active threads. You'll find lots of test threads there.

I dont want you to think i'm being stubborn or difficult or what not it's just that i have so many accoutns with thing all over the place it's hard to track them so i try and consolidate where I can, so i'm trying to stay away from photbucket for now. El oh El I could ahve doen that if I had access to photshop with me at work. I am so used to just adjusting the size in html I was trying to do it that way but I hope u dont mind i stole the new resized image and am going to dump it on my server and use it that way.

Could you put a warning in your tutorial that you should copy an image to your photobucket account (or whatever imagehosting site you use) instead of directly linking to a clipart site?

Please be aware of your file size when posting images here. This is a privately owned and operated site. Large files take up a lot of space and bandwidth. He pays for what we use.

Try to limit your avatar to 50x50. Please remember to keep your signature in check too. Some people don't have broadband connections and must wait 20 minutes for threads to load.

Sorry, but it's the bandwidth from photobucket and other such hosting sites that is in fact being used, as mycroft pointed out in the post above yours about bandwidth theft. It doesn't take up extra bandwidth here unless we link from here. The images hosted here use bandwidth. The Blue Sun images and the basic avatars and the little screenshots. Any picture linked to the site in the threads, however, is not using our bandwidth but that site's bandwidth. My avatar and all my images are linked from photobucket, so they are the ones footing the bill, not Haken.
The loading times I will not debate. I have dial-up, and it's crappy dial-up, but I don't mind waiting. It usually doesn't start taking ridiculous amounts of time until the threads get upwards of 100 posts, and that tends to be with or without extra pictures. And even then I don't mind waiting if it's a thread I'm interested in.
