The Big Damn Movie just won another Big Damn Award, the 2006 Hugo for Best Dramatic Presentation, Long Form. It also won the Nebula earlier in the year, and was presented the Prometheus Award last night from the Libertarian Futurist Society.
Results for other Hugo winners can be found here - http://www.locusmag.com/2006/News/08_HugoCampbellWinners.html

This makes me SOOOOO happy!!!!!!
I love science fiction (Firefly/Serenity being a favorite) and was hoping "Serenity" would win!!!
A big congrats to Joss&Company for their success!!
Now...about that sequel...
I also have to say that I was really excited to see that the short story "Tk,Tk,Tk" won in that catigory. The podcast Escape Pod ran the Hugo short story nominees in a series that showcased all the stories. They were all wonderful, but "Tk,Tk,Tk" really stuck out in my mind.
If you're interested in science fiction short stories, check out "Escape Pod" at www.escapepod.org
New short sci-fi every week and occasional 5-7 minute long "flash" pieces and reviews of genere movies, TV and books.
Congrats to "Serenity"!!!
It's shiny...

That`s excellent news. I thought that the BDH had a good chance of winning but it was never a sure thing.
Any idea who picked up the trophy? It would be nice to think that Joss now has a shiny (literally) new rocket ship award on his mantelpiece.
Come to think of it, this is a boost to plans to produce Firefly/Serenity novelisations.
While the Hugo and Nebula`s are not exactly `high profile` in Hollywood, `Winner of the Hugo and Nebula` always boosts sales of SF and fantasy books so things may get interesting on the publishing front shortly.

Truly excellent news. I didn't doubt it would win looking at the competition, but it's great to know it's won.
Maybe this'll prompt some of the TV exec's to look more closely at FF, and hopefully think about bringing it back.
NOTIFY: Y | REPLY | REPLY WITH QUOTE | PERMALINK | TOP | HOME
Its also nice to see Dr Who pick up the `Short Form` as well.
Of the top of my head I cant think of any other movie thats swept up all the major SF awards in quite the same way.
It kind of puts Serenity up there with SF novels like Dune, Downbelow Station and the like.
UPDATE,
Just did some checking on the Nebula website and found something interesting.
While a number of other SF films have won the Hugo, the only other films to have won both appear to be Sleeper, the LOTR films and STAR WARS a new hope.
Looks like we have a bona fide SF classic on our hands here people.

Holy gee wilickers and gosh dang! Well if that isn't the best news I've heard all week. Joss must be walking on air right now.
That settles it. Sci-fi fans should stage a coup and oust the ignorant execs from their oh-so-high and mighty positions at the TV studios. Then we could make intelligent decisions on what should and should not be financed, as opposed to going by the opinions of folks who prefer "American Idol, part LXXVII". Elitist? You betcha. My brain cells are too precious to waste staring at drivel.

Check out the threads under Firefly and Serenity Guerilla Marketing. We're on a mission to make it known to Universal first that we thank them for the movie, second that there are enough of us to warrant a sequel.(We'd take a show, a mini-series, a tv movie, a straight to DVD movie.. yeah.. all of those.) There have been plans in the works all summer. There was a buying drive on June 23rd. We currently have a video contest for trailers to show on myspace and youtube and google to advertise our show. We are ramping up now to open our website to focus our guerilla marketing ideas, we're also making decisions for what we're gonna do on the Serenity 'Versary ( Sept. 30th, the anniversary of the release of Serenity.) Gosh, Joss is soooo awesome. Like, he's the guy, that you know in school, who's always funny and witty and stuff, and you go to movies with and stuff, and you guys are always getting kicked out of theater because he's better than the actual movie. Maybe that was just a Terri experience, but he could write me speeches anytime. And I don't mean that in a weird way, I seriously mean he could write some speeches for me. I mean, I'd read 'em. Anyway, yeah Morena was adorable as usual, but why wasn't Joss there himself? I know that there's all kinds of WW stuff going on, but he's still writing that right? Oh, well, and casting. But that's not in the real go to stages yet, is it? Maybe he just got her to read it for him because he thought it would be funny with his words coming out of her mouth (the free girl line and all). Not that I'm sure he doesn't have better things to do. Or at least, more pressing ones.

Thanks for the edit, Shiny. I should have thought of that myself.
There's only one thing I thought was a bit weird in the speech. It must have been yet another joke, cause I doubt seriously Joss doesn't know the Hugo was named after Hugo Gernsback.

I would bet if DVD sales are high on the series and the movie, they will look at putting it back on the air.
Remember what happened with Family Guy? Same formula. Fox didn't know what was going on when their "less than popular show" sold over 3.5 million copies AND it was gaining popularity on a different network!

I wondered about that too...
after all it isn't like Anaheim is that far from where he lives...
he had indicated that he had finished writing WonderWoman ...so I'm hoping maybe they've moved into pre-production and Joss is wildly busy with *secret* casting and meeting w/people about costumes sets and all that good stuff....

Like bad2verse said, the first thing any busy person wants to read is the point. Let them know right away what it is that you are looking for. Second line...etc an exsample letter will be helpful for a lot of people, which will get us more people to support this effort. Post the address on your wall so you don't forget about it, having more then one email/mail won't hurt either. Sending late letters will get the point across if you add that into your letter as well. I am in Japan, deployed. My letter won't get their in time but they will get the point and that is what we are looking for. I agree once again bad2verse ( I feel as if I am sucking up to you, but I'm not) lets try to hit the TV networks as well. Because their was so many "new browncoats" after the movie was created (a lot of people didn't know it was a TV show), how can we advertise this a little more?

It's SEPTEMBER 30th.. That should give it plenty of time to get there from Japan.. it usually takes less than two weeks to send/receive letters to/from my military friends in Iraq, Afghanistan, S. Korea, etc... So if you write early, they'll get it in plenty of time.
Coming from an Active Duty Soldier abroad, it'll carry a LOT of weight right now with the current "Support our troops" movement here in the states... be sure to include how your buddies LOVE it also ;) You may even wanna toss in some of that "For those of us deployed away from home, it's a welcomed diversion from reality for a few hours"... Hey, tug all the heart strings ya got at your Command Bro! It's a worthy cause... Airborne! (I know, it's "Semper Fi", but I gotta pick on you a little for that "Cross service rivalry" ;)
MANY of my Army and Marine Friends Plan to write from Afghanistan and Iraq, and Include a pic or two of them Watching the movie in their various compounds, THAT should carry some weight, and every little bit helps.
Your right my mail should get there on time. I am in a weird position here. I am currently with the 31st MEU in training at Camp Fuji, ironical they do not have any envelops here at the only PX on camp.
Their is other camps near by, so this normally wouldn't be a problem and there is no problem if you are a permanent personal here.
My unit can not go off of this camp. When I get back from the "field", I'll go directly on board the ship and head out. I have all of my things with me now, I won't get a chance to go to any other camp. I do not know if they will be a PX on ship.
I am counting on other Marines to be able to help me out, but I do not want to say I'll get any envelops for sure (I don't really see it becoming a problem once I get on ship, I've never been on ship before and I do not know how the mailing process is going to work).
The idea is, regardless of what happens, there shouldn't be a problem with sending in a late letter and I am only trying to encourage others. Life happens and just because someone might read these messages late, don't feel as if its too late to send a letter.
I understand where your coming from but I can not predict the future. That will not stop me from sending a few letters though.
By the way, when you are in Iraq all letters sent out are free, and they are priority mail. IF a letter was sent without priority from Iraq back to the states it would take two MONTHES for your family to get the mail. In Iraq our military is taken
