So, anybody else catch the pilot?

I liked it. I'm pleased at the cheerleader not being stereotypical. I actually hope she and her geeky "sidekick" hook up, they make a cute couple (plus, y'know, A.V. geek getting the cheerleader ). Hiro is my favourite so far, and not just 'cause he's an unabashed otaku.

This one's gonna be fun!

Anybody check to see whether that X-Men reference (Kitty Pryde travelling through time) is legit?

CS, I saw the first episode of Heroes a bit ago, and was impressed!

Lots of potential to take each character in whatever direction they might naturally evolve in. I'm looking forward to more.

I didn't watch it on Monday because I was literally up all night putting together a presentation that I did today, but I knew they were showing an encore of it tonight. I get home in time for it, but I end up falling asleep during it because I was so exhausted.

I only saw the last twenty minutes of it, but I was definitly drawn into it. Hiro has my attention, and I think the cheerleader is a refrence to Buffy. You know, nearly indestructable blonde teenage girl.

I'm gonna try to find this ep online so that I can get caught up. But will be watching this regularily.

This show was awesome. I'm hooked on the cheerleader cuz thats just some freaky sh**. I'm also hooked on Ali Larter's character cuz she is freakin' hot. She's always had me since the "whipped cream bikini" in Varsity Blues. Anyways, I'm looking forward to following this one.

I liked it, too. Not the most original premise, but, being in it's Genesis, they are free to find their own way without any strict obligation to the past. Which could afford them some important advantages over reinterpretations of the X-Men. So far, I have high hopes.
I think I might have that X-men. Uncanny 143, right. I'd have to check. It's been a while.

Caught the encore last night and ejoyed it. It moved a bit slow, but that is to be expected as they introduce characters.

Not sure who my favorite character is yet, but I know the single mom with the stripping website creeps me out. Her power is odd to say the least.

Looking forward to the next episode.

I'm waiting anxiously the next episode. Of course, I know with my luck I'll miss a couple episodes and end up waiting for the season 1 dvd set, but either way, should be fun.

I thought it was okay. Has potential, but it didn't knock my socks off. I like the idea, and I'm always down for a good superhero tale, but the opening text was a pretty weak way to start a new show, ans the way the blood kept dissapearing from Cheerleader lass when she healed really, really annoyed me.

I thought it all felt a bit rushed, as well. But that will happen when your 2-hour pilot gets cut down to 1 hour.

I really liked Ali Larter's character, and the Indian investigating his Father's death. I'm hoping it improves next week with the addition of Greg Grunberg, whom I became a fan of from Alias.

Hiro was referring to the classic Days of Future Past story, in which a Kitty Pryde of the future swapped places with her younger self to warn the X-Men of some dire situation. It was actually #141-142, but I can forgive him for being a little off (though the writers could have easily looked it up and gotten it right).

I liked the pilot, I think it has some potential. I don't know about the "our lives are happening in this comic book" angle that they might be going for, that seems a little cheesy. But I'll give it a chance.

I like the cheerleader, they did a great job on writing her, I think. And the Ali Larter character's powers intrigue me.

I'm a little confused about Ali Larter's powers. Her reflection tells her what to do and she can evicerate people without remembering? That'll be something to explain to the cops.

I love the little Japanese dude. Spazzy nerds are dear to my heart.

The disappearing/reappearing blood on cheerleader girl's clothes annoyed me too, but I liked her character. And I loved that they have Texans on the show without sounding like they escaped from Hee-Haw. It's rare to have television actually fairly-accurately represent a group of people located in the flyover states.

I think it's kinda a split-personality thing. The mother has an alternate personality that's a River-esque killing machine. Sometimes the assassin bubbles to the surface, sublimating the "alpha" personality.

The visual style of it (the woman's reflection being visibly different from herself) reminds me of Rose & Thorn from DC Comics ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rose_and_Thorn).

Quote:

Rhosyn "Rose" Forrest is the daughter of Metropolis police officer Phil Forrest who died from the attack of a crime group named the 100. When Rose went to sleep, her Thorn personality would emerge and stalk the streets as a vigilante, attempting to bring the 100 to justice. She succeeds in this goal and the Thorn disappears from the superhero scene until members of the 100 escape and form the 1000. She has since worked with Superman and Booster Gold to try to put these criminals behind bars. For a brief period of time, she was under the control of Lord Satanus.

Thorn has no actual superpowers, but she is highly athletic and retains a high degree of martial arts ability from when her father taught her. She is known to carry a pair of combat daggers, a barbed whip, and a bandolier of tiny, thorn-shaped weapons, some of which contain explosives, miniature smoke bombs, or blinding magnesium flares.

I'm leanin' towards a guardian aspect. She seems to be split on the idea herself. Sure she might just be seeing herself as having clean clothes and actually being bloody like in the mirror, but the idea of the person watching that she can't see is a possibility. Or maybe a killing machine that is mentally unstable and fast like a freak.

As for the cheerleader, my guess is the mirror image was just a stylistic choice by the director to imply that she has the capability to astrally project her spirit out of her body. I would bet than in the future we will find out that other people can see her "other self."

I have to say, aside from my annoyance with the effects on the cheerleader's healing ability, her characterization really bothered me.

Why was she so upset? How exactly does being nigh-invulnerable translate to ruining your life? Yeah, sure, you might get some odd responses from people who see you break yourself in half, and then instantly heal. But that's not such a problem if you stop trying to injur yourself.

She was the only one upset about her new powers, and hers is potentially the most usefull, and easily concealable power of al so far.

Actually, what interested me about "Cheerverine" is that she's not just the typical airheaded bimbo (I'd say "stereotypical," but I've met too many cheerleaders). Her obvious friendship with camera-guy (and her "payment" --talking to him in public at school tomorrow) suggests that there's more to her than we've seen.

She seems to realize the whole "Great Power = Great Responsibility" thing --simply hiding her gift and having a normal life isn't an option for her, not when she has the power/responsibility to help people. Note how quick she is to rush into that train wreck, and what she does as soon as she sees the guy inside.

It's also possible that she expects people to try to turn her into a specimen if they find out --a valid concern even if she doesn't know what daddy does for a living.

I'll agree that she wasn't depeicted as the general airhead bimbo, but her "payment" implied to me she's the typical popular b!tch that generally only talks to those of her "status" at school (I teach High School, so I see this a lot).

And she didn't go into the train wreck for any noble reason, or to face her responsibility. She helped the guy once she got there, yes, but she went in as just another experiment. And she did it with witnesses, which undermines her position of being afraid people will find out about her.

As luck would have it, Global showed the pilot almost a week after the debut, which I was glad for since I was able to catch up on it. And I'm glad I did.

The cheerleader and the Japanese guy are obviously my faves. With the flying guy, I can understand why they don't show him actually flying (this being network tv, probably don't have the budget to see him go all SUPERMAN), but I hope they can expand on him and his background. The painter who can see the future I can do without, and I'm not sure about Ali Larter.

But it's obvious that there'a lot more going on with Buffy 2.0, whose sub-plot I see as sort of an alternate take on BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER. Probably a mroe serious version of BUFFY. And after seeing the full Hiro sub-plot, I think I know why he's already a fan favorite after one ep.

Next to Johnny Storm off of the FANTASTIC FOUR movie, he's the first person in all the superhero tvshows and movies that have come out in the last ten years that seems to actually enjoy having his powers. All the other heroes on the show from one degree to another, feel burdened. Either they see themselves as being cursed with these powers, or that they see this as a reluctant call to arms. But Hiro, upon discovering his powers, is absolutely ecstatic about it. He actually sees the fun in this. I guess in that being a sci-fi and comic book geek, he sees this as hitting the jackpot, and not only is he accepting of his newfound powers, but is ready to jump (or in his case teleport) feet first into this with a grin on his face.

I think it's really this fresh take on the superhero genre, at least in Hiro's case, is what's going to have people coming back for more.

Kitty Pryde also timetravelled in Days of Future Past. Here's the wiki article:

In the Days of Future Past timeline (Earth-811), Shadowcat goes by the name Kate Pryde. Kate attempts to go back in time to prevent the slaughter of all superhumans. Although she succeeds in preventing the cause (the assassination of Senator Robert Kelly by Mystique and the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants), she only creates a separate timeline where anti-mutant sentiment is still strong and their eventual persecution seems inevitable. Back in her own time, she helps Rachel Summers escape back to the timeline she just created. Captured by sentinels, Kate manages to escape by accidentally phasing which merges her with a time warp that sends her to the timeline Rachel is inhabiting. Kate’s mind settles in a small, metal, off-spherical body and becomes known as Widget. After a few adventures in that timeline, Widget / Kate regains her memory and returns to her original timeline where she is able to reprogram the ruling sentinels to protect life, ending their tyranny.

Did any of you guys check out the second ep? Oh man, I was so psyched by the end, when Hiro realized that not only had he jumped across an entire ocean and continent in the blink of an eye, but managed to travel five weeks into the future, just in time to find out that a month from now, all of New York will be nuked. And then to jump back.

So not only do we have a superhero series, but also a quasi-time travel series, and on network TV no less.

And with Buffy 2.0, that bit where she was knocked down by the football player and got her head twisted around, God that creeped me out when she went all Linda Blair.

And the intro to Greg Grunberg's character was played really well, especially since it kind of introduced I guess the super-villain of the show. Although I don't get why he freezes his characters and then eats their brains. Oh well.

I'm definitly going to be checking this one out week after week next to STUDIO 60.

Thanks to patsrule, I was able to catch the pilot on the web just in time to quick make supper and then watch the second episode. I'm loving this show so far.

Comments:

Select to view spoiler:

1. I think the Cheerleader and Hiro oughta get together. Their lives would never be boring, that's for sure.

2. The villain freezes people and eats their brains because he is one of these mutants too, he can freeze stuff, but he's gone bad and hates everybody. Especially other mutants. He wants to track them all down and do the same to them. In fact, I think he thinks he takes their power when he does that.

3. The skeleton in the desert?--I bet it's Stripper Girl's ex. (Though the premise of a body buried 2 inches in desert dirt staying put long enough to skeletonize is a big stretch.)

****SPOILERS AHEAD!****

Caught it and liked it. The story is moving along a little better.

The end made me go WTF?!? The artist is dead with the top of his head sawed off and his brain removed. WTF?!? Then we see that not only did Hiro teleport he went forward in time to the day of the nuclear explosion. At least it appears to be a nuclear detonation.

What's up with the killer pinning the mother to the staircase with utensils? The dad is frozen solid at the dinner table? WTF?!? The top of his head cut off and his brain removed? What is with all the brain removing. Is this the cheerleader's dad doing this stuff? Is he a metahuman too?

I didn't agree with the FBI spook arresting the cop, but I guess it will play out in plot development and getting all the heroes together.

What is up with the stripper mom? She blacks out on the road and winds up in the parking lot of the airport in different clothes? I guess that is when her other self (for lack of a better explaination) cleaned up the garage, found the '59 Caddy, put the bodies in the trunk with the map, and left the shovel in the desert. That is one creepy power.

What did everyone else think?

I'm loving this.

Okay, now Hiro knows what the stakes are (I loved that the date Hiro gave was the actual date: October 2). He just has to get in touch with the others to avert the disaster.

I'm getting the impression that "freezing-guy" and "brain-extracting guy" are two different people --the Prophet's body wasn't frozen. (I'm just gonna go ahead and give these guys codenames until I get their real names straight. ) Whoever pinned the woman to the wall was obviously a telekinetic (only other way involves super strength, but why go to the trouble of pinning her up there?), so that's who we're looking for.

And I don't think the brains are being eaten, just extracted. Possibly someone trying to analyze the mutation --they're obviously tied into the central nervous system (we know 'cause most of them either seem controllable or have some affect on consciousness/perception), which means that the brain plays a critical role.

Claire ("Cheerverine") seems to think that the mutations are genetic, which makes sense (especially in light of the flying brothers). I have a hunch her birth-parents are going to play a critical role (whether or not her dad was telling the truth about contacting the adoption agency).

That girl Mohinder met in the building --there's more to her than we've seen. The way she grabbed the gun and immediately sized up the situation is suspicious. Normal people aren't that cool under pressure. Also, that guy planting the bug --did anyone else get the impression he had higher-than-normal strength? Something about the way Mohinder went flying when they guy kicked him suggests that either Mohinder's deceptively lightweight or the guy was kicking him much harder than he seemed to.

I'm totally with you there. That girl was pretty little, like me, and if I saw a guy with a gun, I would probably just faint or something. The kick also stood out to me. As soon as I saw Mohinder go flying I thought, "that's a Buffy kick!" I've missed having people with super strength on TV

Well, flying is hard on a live-action TV budget --the best I've ever seen was Lois & Clark, and even it was mostly what we saw in Superman II (blue-screen, composited into long shots, often wildly out-of-scale with backgrounds and seeming to fly sideways). Granted, that was a while ago, so I'm hoping that future flight scenes will be better-done, as the VFX departments (and the brothers) hone their skills.

Besides, they needed to keep it obscure as to exactly what happened, to make the last scene's big revelation work.

I think you are right Cybersnark, it must be several people working together that caused the carnage we saw in the house filled with cops and feds. Two distinct, yet unrelated powers. Must be at least two different people.

I also agree that the removal of the brains is for study. I am thinking that some cabal within the government will be responsible for the brain removal and they are using metahumans as wetworks teams. Obviously the government would be eager to get their hands on people with super abilities.

Can't wait for next week's episode.

Only in America...

I found this article this morning on my favorite tv website, zap2it.com

Quote:

Garbage Disposal Maker Sues NBC Over 'Heroes' Scene

Company says its product cast 'in unsavory light'
October 3, 2006

The company that makes In-Sink-Erator garbage disposers is suing NBC, claiming that an episode of the new show "Heroes" makes the product look bad.

Appliance maker Emerson filed the lawsuit in a St. Louis federal court Monday, seeking to block rebroadcasts of the "Heroes" pilot. In the episode, a high-school cheerleader (Hayden Panettiere) who has the ability to withstand injury sticks her hand into an In-Sink-Erator while it's running, mangling her fingers (which return to normal within a few seconds).

Emerson's suit claims the scene "casts the disposer in an unsavory light, irreparably tarnishing the product" by suggesting that serious injuries will result "in the event consumers were to accidentally insert their hand into one."

The suit, however, is more about NBC's use of the In-Sink-Erator name than the content of the scene, the company says. "It's a trademark thing," spokesman Dan Callahan tells the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

NBC hasn't commented on the suit.

Emerson is asking for a ruling barring future broadcasts of the pilot, which is available on NBC's website and has already aired on NBC Universal-owned cable networks USA and Sci Fi. It also seeks to block NBC from using any Emerson trademarks in the future.

Whats pissin' me off the most is the cliff hanger endings. End the episodes so we don't get pissed off at the end of a great show. Its buggin' me!

Siler was the name of the guy responsible for the gruesome murders. He is also the one on the professor's answering machine. I think all the characters are realizing their powers but I don't think they are all "heroes". Just like Siler, I think Stripper Mom is developing a power as a, for lack of a better word, VILLAIN.

I really like heroes so far. Finally another primetime sci-fi epic sort. (I dont have cable, and as much as i love house and bones and stuff, they arent exactly sci-fi.) I dislike the name, becuase so far, they seem like regular folk n stuff, "HEROES" sounds too grand and important. Oh well, if nothing else its an Xmen or mutant X clone, but whatever, nothing wrong with that. Looking forward to more.

Man I am loving this show. Hope both it and Eureak! last awhile.

I think the brain removal has to indicate some sort of dark secret govermnent agency (like the NID on Stargate SG-1)tracking the heroes and studying them. But what's their goal? ... Or maybe it's aliens!

I think the Cheerleader's Dad might be Syler.

Actually, I recall reading somewhere that there would be super-villain(s) emerging. Whole point of the show is asking what people would do with these powers --it's not the powers alone that make heroes, it's how they're used.

I think I’m really going to enjoy these SciFi Friday nights. My time is very limited, in that it is difficult for me to schedule many nights of tv shows. As such there are many shows that I can’t keep up with, that I might otherwise want to. But having Heroes, Doctor Who and Battlestar Galactica all in a row on the same night and channel is great.

Heroes sounded like a dull premise when I first heard of it, and seeing the soap opera-ish beautifulness of the characters made me cringe. Truth is I only watched it because I was eating dinner before Doctor Who, and the channel was tuned to SciFi. But I’m rather impressed that they seem to be meshing together an intriguing story out of this rather thin subject.

Like the X-files and BSG, they are employing the art of realism to render a sense of credibility to a quite fantastic issue, which is a good idea, considering that the story hinges on whether the audience buys the superpower thing. That realism requires some pretty graphic images and some very mature content, though, which I’m sure adults would have no problem with, though I’m concerned that this show probably needs to be on a little later in the evening because of it. Realistic depictions of implied prostitution, drug use and the graphic images of mangled bodies is pretty mature content but it’s not overdone for shock value and it does work. It forces you to accept the thin story as plausible. I don’t have any problem suspending belief to accept what would otherwise be a totally unbelievable story.

My favorite characters so far are Claire, Hiro and Niki. Claire, I like in part (I’ll just admit it up front) because Hayden Panettiere is one the most beautiful actresses I’ve seen. She sort of reminds me of a young Tatum O’Neil. But I also like the contrast of the beautiful cheerleader with the horrendous injuries, but like StoryMark, I was wondering what her problem was. I think however that maybe I was over thinking it. Essentially, her problem is that the she’s a flighty, ditzy cheerleader who cares principally about her popularity, and her reaction to her power is to view it as an anathema to her social standing. She comes across as warm and affectionate in some cases, but shallow and impulsive in others, and that, I think, is probably the most well-written and sympathetic characterization of the a typical beautiful 16-year cheerleader.

Hiro is the only character that seems to lucidly and openly embrace his power with enthusiasm. He is also clearly the most stereotypical, being a Trekkie nerd. That he is also Japanese is almost an ethnic slur, but it does make sense to put the person with his particular powers outside of the country, and Japanese ethnicity does suit the character well. He also provides much needed comic relief to show that is oddly enough very grim.

Niki is probably the most mature character in terms of the kinds of scenes she is depicted in: prostitution and extremely graphic murder. One very graphic image of her victims looked like the remains of a high explosive. It seems clear that she may end up as a villain, but a very sympathetic one.

I love how this is going.

Hiro's now got a sidekick (and is enjoying this adventure way too much)!

Looks like I was right: Sylar's telekinetic. And appears to have some kind of healing factor or invulnerability.

Claire proves my assumption about powers being linked to brains (and also hints how to "kill" Wolverine, theoretically. . .). There's gonna be a confrontation between her and the jerk (and the jerk's girlfriend). Pity Hallmark doesn't make a "your boyfriend just tried to rape me, then got my head impaled and left me for dead(*)" card. I'm actually more irritated at the unseen Medical Examiner. What kinda incompetent ME starts an autopsy with a big foreign object lodged in the victim? And then removes said foreign object and just strolls out of the room?!? Ducky would have words with this nincompoop.

Uh, sorry. Wrong show, for a second there.

I don't know if anyone noticed this, but the man who plays Silar was Forrest (Riley's friend) in Buffy. And from what I've seen, I believe his character is psychokinetic, which includes cryokinesis, pyrokinesis, and telekinesis. It would explain the woman being pinned to the wall as well as the man being frozen. And now suddenly realizing how geeky I sound.

Think they may be going Magneto on this one? That could also help ecplain the not getting killed by all of those bullets thing. I'm just guessing, mind you. TK would make me happy too.

If it was magnetic, she could've just twisted away from the gun. Plus I was watching her finger --it looked like she couldn't pull it away from the trigger (which likely would've been her first instinct at feeling the gun being twisted around).

Also, IIRC, you could make out the bullets hitting him (squibs on his clothes). If they hadn't, he wouldn't have gone down like he did, or moved quite so stiffly as he was getting back up.

Definitely telekinetic & not magnetic. The female FBI agent was fighting pulling the trigger when Sylar made her point her weapon at her own head. There is also the matter of lifting people into the air to impale them on the wall.

As for the bullets, I think it was a matter of telekinetic ability stopping them short of entering him, not some sort of healing ability. I think a hastily erected TK shield stopped them from wounding him, but the force of the impacts still knocked him down. When Sylar stood back up you could hear the bullets hitting the ground. Just as he disappeared you heard a "whoosh" sound as if he flew or jumped up to a great height to evade capture.

Definitely getting really good. I think we will see heroes and villians. Sylar is one, but I think we will see more.

While I agree on the lack of coroner when Claire wakes up on a gurney with her chest cracked open, I think maybe this was done to see the utterly horrified look on his face when he walks in on her. Where do you think her sub-plot will go from here?

I'm thinking that she heals in time to get out of the morgue as the coroner calls someone to let them know that a 16 year old girl with a hole in her head and a cracked open chest has just woken up. She makes a run back to her place to grab some clothes and other stuff because after this, she definitly can't stay in Odessa. She maybe runs into the A/V guy who filmed her and tells him everything, and he either decides to come with her, or he stays behind to kick the ass of the quarterback who killed her. All the while, the mysterious step-dad will be following Claire as she makes her way cross country, maybe possibly meeting up with Hiro in Vegas. That could be a fun episode. A sullen, indestructible 16 year old cheerleader paired with an ecstatic, space-time breaker who used to be an office drone in Japan.

I wonder if there's a fanfic of that already?

It is possible that Sylar is also someone we already know, and in that case my bet is on Nathan Petrelli.

I think that Claire will heal and get out of the morgue before the coroner gets back. It will be played off as a body snatching. Claire will come to the realization, after talking to the nerd w/ the camera (and the crush on her) that her life in town is over. She will try to get revenge on the guy who killed her (as we saw in clips for next week) before leaving town. I think her friend will then convince her she (or possibly they) need to leave town. I think they will be compelled to go to either Las Vegas, or New York, since that seems to be where the two greatest concentrations of Meta Humans seems to be now.

I have no doubt that Claire's adoptive father will follow her, knowing as he does what she is.

This is shaping up to be a great show.

That's assuming that the person who removed said foreign object from the brain was the ME--and not, say, her adoptive father? The ME may be lying unconscious (or worse) just out of camera range...

As to the garbage disposal suit, my question is, what would really happen if you put a human hand into a running disposal of that make? If they have some kind of safety system to prevent serious injury, then their suit has merit; if not, then not. In either event, NBC's legal department shouldn't have shown a specific brand-name on the thing.

I like this show but my husband is fanatical about it. He uses his free time at work to read the graphic novels and blogs on the HEROES website.
His theory is that Syler has all the powers that the other do. So he healed over his gunshot wounds (like Claire would) and pushed them back out (a la Wolverine) and flew away like Nathan. Plus he's got a few more nifty little powers that we haven't seen in anyone else yet.
He said the website is really cool and is loaded with theories from other viewers. Anybody here checked it out?

I was thinking the same thing as your husband. Sylar (or whoever the shady character was) is somehow developing or has developed some type of aggregate power.

I’m also thinking that the shady character, whether he is Sylar or not, might not be a bad guy. That’s a possibility that I’m drawing from the way these kinds of things play out. Did anyone see the shady character actually kill anyone?

Concerning Claire’s autopsy, I’m a little bewildered by the sequence of events also. It seems unlikely that a coroner would have left such an object lodge in the skull during an autopsy. It seems equally unlikely that a coroner would begin exhuming the chest cavity and then leave after only peeling back the abdominal and chest tissue. Also, after Claire came back to life there would have been massive bleeding. Furthermore, in Claire’s case, the head would have been examined, which means peeling back the tissue on the skull and removing the brain, which would seem to have drastic consequences to hero-stricken individuals (actually you’d be surprised how many things that would kill.) In spite of these seeming inaccuracies, it was a pretty good ending to the episode.

Claire will definitely be getting out of Dodge. Whether or not she bothers to get revenge remains to be seen.

What I am more concerned with is Hiro and his buddy heading towards Vegas. One of the last things we see is his friend looking at psycho mom on his cell phone. If they have a run in with her I'm thinking it will end badly.

That girl hanging around with Mohinder has got to be a plant. She is way too calm about the weird things that are happening. It is no coincidence that the apartment they broke into was cleaned out before the police got there. She didn't seem at all surprised by this.

Anyone else think the explosion in NY is not simply a nuke? My theory is some villain who is able to manipulate energy the same way Hiro messes with space-time.

I was thinking that Pete must be like Sync too. It made sense when he was talking to Mohinder & said he believed his power worked only when his brother was around. That to me screamed it was Nathan that could fly, not Pete. I immediately thought of Sync. When time froze at the end of the episode I was thinking did Pete somehow "borrow" Hiro's power? It didn't make sense though since Hiro was not around.

The black man working w/ Claire's dad is definitely some sort of telepath. Apparently he somehow shut down the cop's mind (can't remember his name) and body. Whoever Claire's dad really is, and whoever he might be working for, he obviously has one of the meta humans in his employ. I would be willing to bet he has more than one.

So who is Sylar and how does he tie into all of this? He is obviously one of the super powered villians they mentioned would appear.

ANYWAY, just thought I'd pass along that there is now a Heroes podcast (only a matter of time!) being put together by Miranda, one of the folk from Firefly Talk and The Signal. You can find her site at www.heroescast.com, and the podcast at http://heroescast.libsyn.com/

I'll definitly check that out.

I was obviously intrigued by the dark turn that it took this week when not only did we see future Hiro looking and acting very different from the Hiro we know, but also see him use his powers for moentary gain. I thought that his friends rationalization of it ("Is Peter Parker cheating when he sells pictures of Spider-Man?"), opens up an interesting debate. It's interesting that they choose Spider-man, since Peter first used his powers to try to scrape up some cash as an amateur wrestler. And of course, we all know what happened afterwards.

But as for the selling pictures, I think that it's not really cheating, but a way of usurping a blowhard (J. Jonah Jameson) whose unfounded and constant attacks on Spider-Man through the front pages of The Daily Bugle is a form of villainy. So Peter selling him pics of his enemy taken by himself is a way of sticking it to him. As for Hiro stopping time to win at the roulette table, I think they could have only got away with it for so long before the house noticed two Japanese office drones on an unstoppable winning streak. They should have just taken the money from the first few winnings and ran.

But as evidenced in future Hiro, as well as present Hiro getting punched out by one of the Texan's thugs, it's apparant that this abuse of power will come back to bite Hiro in the ass.

Wouldn't surprise me. Since both are NBC shows, it would only make sense to film on pre-existing sets to save cast.

But since we're on the topic of show lapse, there's a bit over at EW.com that theorizes that "Heroes" and "Lost" share the same universe. Tim Kring and Damon Lindeloft both worked on CROSSING JORDAN and they keep in contact about both their shows. And there are so many parallels between the two shows that it would make sense if they occupied the same universe.

Add LAS VEGAS into the mix, and you got an interesting set-up for cross over fanfics.

I say there is no chance that Lost is part of the Heroes/ Las Vegas/ Crossing Jordan universe. Different networks. There won't be any crossovers, and the heroes won't be going to the island.

Love Heroes though. The show gets better and better. I think it may even be better than this season's Lost so far, which is unbelievable since I think Lost is my all-time favorite show to date.

Every episode of Heroes has given me a couple of true chill inducing scenes. Love it.

I really hope they don't go to quickly on explaining why Future Hiro appeared. I think it would be awesome if they revisit it a few seasons down the road. He was so different, it would take a long time to do that metamorphasis.

Not necessarily. Remember, Hiro can stop time.

I can see him "upgrading" himself in a single episode. He just stops time for a (subjective) year or two and studies the extent of his powers.

Wouldn't be unprecedented: That's how Impulse became the new Kid Flash. He sat down and read every book in a library. He was done in about ten minutes, and ended up as a completely new character.

Similar thing happened in The Gargoyles Saga/TimeDancer: The Phoenix Gate appeared, Brooklyn picked it up and vanished. Five minutes later he reappeared, years older, with a new look, a mate, and two kids.

I was intrigued by the twist w/ Hiro & his buddy using Hiro's powers to make money in the casino too Reginaroadie. The roulette wheel was one thing, but I can't believe he pulled that stunt at the poker table. How did they think they were going to get away with it. The comparison by Hiro's friend to Peter Parker was nice & very fitting. I hope it wasn't foreshadowing. I would hate to see Hiro's buddy get killed. Of course given their situation with the guy in the cowboy hat and his thugs, it could be a real possibility.

I agree that Hiro, and very likely his friend, will have his abuse of his powers come back to haunt him. I can't believe his friend shot off his mouth about Hiro's ability. Not very bright.

Actually, I am a fan of many comics. I read DC, Marvel, Image, Dark Horse, as well as a plethora of smaller studio comics. I don't really hold any true loyalty to one over the other.

I call the Heroes metahumans because that is what they appear to be. I don't see any signs of mutation so I have refrained from calling them mutants.

I'm a multi-book reader too. I just call them mutants 'cause every metahuman I've seen ended up needing some kind of trigger for their powers to kick in. The people here seem to have just suddenly manifested, more like like mutants.

As an aside, did anybody get a chuckle out of Jericho last night, after the woman got electrocuted?

KID: Will she wake up?
WOMAN: I think so.
KID: With superpowers?

Hey, just refreshing the thread for this week.

Last nights ep was pretty solid, like the others. Myf avorite part was when Nathan landed in front of the diner that Hiro was at. Did anyone think "Silver Surfer" as he came in on re-entry?

I just like the fact that he scraped his feet when he landed. It's nice to see not-so-perfect superheroes.

And does Peter have a cool power, or what? Granted, he can only use it around other people with abilities, but it's still pretty shiny.

I hope they find some way for Isaac to use his powers without having to shoot up. Otherwise, he's not long for this world. His has to be one of the most valuble gifts.

It's nice to be excited about a show again. Let's hope that it gets spared the axe by the powers that be. I've heard of three shows that have already been cancelled.

I'm really happy to see all the storeis intertwining so well. I have to admit last nights Ep. was a little predictable, but still solid. Got to catch up Sunday night sonce I had missed Ep. three.
Oh, and the part where the cop stopped the kid from robbing the store. Felt a little choked up. Great scene.

I loved the bit with Hiro and the drivers' manual. Naturally, the guy who only reads Japanese gets the one rental car in all of freakin' North America with an English manual.

I think Peter's ability to activate the power suggests that it can be used "clean," Isaac just has to find some way to kick-start it. Maybe he should try meditation or something.

(I like how their eyes go blind when they paint. It kinda reminds me of Tiresias, the blind prophet from Oedipus Rex. Yay culture!)

Really enjoyed Monday's episode.

How long has Nathan known he can fly. Did it strike anybody else as odd that he seemed to have such mastery over his gift when Claire's dad & his telepath lapdog had him backed up against the fence? He jumps several hundred feet into the air in a single bound, then breaks the sound barrier as he takes off. Short of a less than graceful landing he seemed to be in real control over his flight power.

What is up w/ Niki's husband the criminal? He seems to be able to be invisible or phase in & out of solid matter. That makes for one interesting power.

Peter's power allowing him to mimic Issac's ability was cool. Did anyone else see notice how he saw flashes of images on the canvas before his eyes clouded over and he began painting? I don't believe that has happened to Issac. Could it be that Peter is more intuititve on the use of powers?

I find the characters' reactions to their powers interesting. Most are in denial or are almost frustrated by them. Isaac, obviously; Nikki, confused and upset; Claire, almost acting like her powers are getting in the way of her real life; the cop (what's his name?) seeing the possibilities, but overwhelmed. Hiro.in contrast, is thrilled to death. Peter takes it all very seriously and finds himself frustrated that the others he has met don't seem to feel the same way.

My theory about the whole thing is that each Hero has a dark counterpart with similar powers. Nikki's dark counterpart is actually inside her, but everybody else's is a separate person. We'll see how many episodes it takes for my theory to be shot down.

Based on his quick reaction in the first episode, and the online comic, I get the impression that he discovered his power a while back and has been quietly training, while doing everything he could to avoid drawing attention. Now that he knows there are other mutants out there, he seems a bit more relaxed about it.

Note how easygoing he seemed after that flight; he just strode into that diner in his skivvies and was perfectly at ease about it. He's starting to enjoy this.

At first, based on the scene, I thought he was turning invisible, but the latest comic makes it clear that he's phasing --and that he's intuited how to control the power. It's tied to emotion.

http://www.nbc.com/Heroes/novels/ for the comic. Sorry, *sarcastic air quotes* "Graphic Novel."

The question of whether Hiro's ability can change the future has already been answered. Isaac's comic showed that schoolgirl in Tokyo being killed, but not Hiro's saving her. She'd be road sushi if Hiro hadn't interfered.

Therefore New York can be saved. One life or 8.2 million, the principal is the same.

So what exactly is Peter's power? Was it flight like his brother or is it absorbing other people's power when he is near them?

If that is the case, it could be possible that he can have all the powers of everyone around him! And that would be awesome!!! I expected his powers to be flight like that of his brother.

Hiro is difinitely the most lighthearted character in the series. He doesn't give me that much of a headache. As for the others all I have are speculations, which is giving me a headache.

I wonder what will the good doctor be up to? He's stubborn!

Of course it will be spared. It is the top rated show of the night in adults 18-49, and NBC's most successful new scripted series. They already ordered additional episodes, so there will be 22 episodes this season alone. Its a good bet it will be brought back for additional seasons next year (which also means there is a good bet there will be copy cat shows that aren't as good, but I digress). The same cannot be said for Studio 60, which follows Heroes. Its a good show as well, but is losing half the heroes audience.

He's a power-matcher, like Synch from Generation X. Anything anyone else can do, he can do better. I don't know if he can match more than one power at a time, though. There'd probably be some pretty bad side-effects.

I read the online graphic novel about Nikki's husband and now I am really confused. Her husband was framed? I thought he was some sort of gang banger or something from the way Nikki talked.

His phasing ability is pretty cool. Like Shadowcat.

I think Peter has the potential to be the most powerful. His ability to mimic others powers could be quite useful. It also seems to me that he seems to have a bit more control over them. When he was looking at the half finished canvas in Issac's flat of the figure that is obviously "Sylar" he saw ghost images of what was to be painted. He also used the ability by simply closing his eyes and focusing. This leads me to believe that Issac does not need drugs to get his powers to work, merely focus.

Can't wait for next week's episode.

Well, the original story (and Nikki's assumption) is that he killed off the rest of his gang.

DL claims he's innocent, and we're also getting the implication that Nikki's alter-ego isn't entirely benevolent. It's entirely possible that she did the killing in one of her fugues.
