they look very cool, but sadly require that you be slim petite and probably asian to cary them off. I think i'm going to go with the old standby f raiding the lined cupboard.
Or maybe slightly more fancy than that.
I found one reference book, though theres a lot of reading involved, but it did have a great version of yours Serenity. Basically, if you go to a site called The Costumers Manifesto, they have costume history all neatly sliced up for referencing. A lot of of the greek links are broken, but theres still enough there.
Still looking for the place that gives you the step by step though.
Of course you can be Eros SR, but does that mean you will be coming next year? *fingers crossed for good luck*

WOAH! That website is a bit overwhelming! Lots of pretty pictures, though.
It doesn't look like those outfits would be too hard to make. I like the chiton when it's buttoned up the arms to make sleeves. That's pretty.
SR: If you come as Eros, will you walk around in a loin cloth with a bow and arrows? *snerk*

Did anyone in England see Dom Joly's Happy Hour? With that guy in South Carolina (possibly) making moonshine? and they couldn't understand a single word he was saying, and sometimes even the subtitiles they gave him just read '?????????????... something about possums?'
that was amusing.

Well, i got a list of the major, most recoognisable player, their symbols and any specific things they wore (kiddies books a bout greece in the fts when its not busy are so useful!)
I was going to post them here, but, shall we resurrect the costumy thread? then we can keep updating the list when theres a new snippet of information, and keep track of who's going as who, and share photo's and ideas and interesting pictures we've come accross (like i've seen loads of statues of Anthena, but don't want to fill up this thread)
Shall we do that?
Mai! How about Hebe? Goddess of Youth, who i think married Heracles, or Hestia, goddess of the hearth and home (not very glamorous sounding, but she was the most worshipped - every single greek houshold had a shrine to her)
I'm wavering, was thinking about Hera (i like peacock feathers)

God of the underworld, Hades also know as pluto, is usually associated with a sceptre, the three headed dog Cerberus, a cap of invisibility, the key to the underworld, and a two pronged staff. Trees/plants sacred to him are the cypress and narcissus.
I've no idea of their actual validity, it was a kiddies book - but i thought information like that would be good for choosing colours and patterns etc.
It all helps.
Ok, i'm going to start the new thread, but maybe not tonight, i'm tired. But sometime this weekend.

Sigh. Guess I gotta find my galoshes (wellies, or so I understand, for the Britfolk). A god's gotta do what a god's gotta do, and so what if the sheep get nervous.
Though I kinda don't mind being noted for the seduction of Khione on the same night as Apollon.

No cozen, both Hermes and Apollo slept with the same woman, Khione, on the same night. Apollon (Apollo) is a man-type god. And, because Greek mythology is full of this kind of stuff, she gave birth to two different babies, one by each guy. Though, how they could tell whose baby was whose is beyond me!
It also may be interesting to note that she was killed by Artemis (Apollo's sister), whom she pissed off by claiming to be prettier or something.
By the way, just because I'm a big Greek nerd, I would just like to inform all and sundry that "theoi" is simply the plural form of the word "theos" which means, "god".
Also, I knew the answer to final Jeopardy last night: "The word "toxic" comes from the ancient greek word for this weapon." The answer? "arrow". The word in greek is "atoxos". I felt all smart-like!

I don't know which one to choose. There are so many! I don't want to be someone icky or evil, but from the looks of it maybe they all had a bit of that. Which one was the goddess of chocolate? or dessert or sugar ... the junk food goddess? cause that would be cool.

I just thought you'd like Hecate for the ghosts stuff, and carrying two torches wouldn't be too hard to pull off. We could find those things with the little lights and the fans that blow the strips of paper so they look like fire.
I didn't know about the spiteful bits, I don't think of you that way. I think you're right though, If you dig deep enough you can likey find something that someone would consider icky about each of them.

Seryn-don't mind me, I'm just in my nerdy element, 'tis all! Mythology makes me go all tingly and wiggly inside, like languages and chocolate do.
Last night, I was cutting up a pomegranate (they were on sale last week at the store!!) My cousin had never had one, so I was letting him try it, and as I was popping all the seeds out, I told him the story of Persephone, because he didn't know it. He loved the pomegranate. We were eating seeds like candy. YUM!

Have you seen The Adventures of Baron Munchausen?
Its a great film, and its got the roman versions of Aphrodite and Hephaistos in there, and he's played by Oliver Reed i think, but its so funny, he's showing them through his domain, and theres nuclear warheads in there and everything, he's just showing them off like a car sales man who not quite sure if he actually likes cars after all.

The Adventures of Baron Munchausen is fantastic!
Robin Williams and Eric Idle. And Uma made a very nice venus at the time, she lost whatever it was she had then though.

I love libraries too. I was just saying that you have to be a fairly quiet nerd mood to hang out there. I personally could sit in the public library all day long and relax (the college library not so much!) However, when you have the urge to be lerdy (loud and nerdy) this is probably the best place for it. :P

I used to work in the school library, i say work - byt the time i got to the fourth year, they'd changed the librarian, so i was showing her the ropes, fixing the machinery, orderin the other library minions around and buying the new books.
that was fun!

Holy carp! (and yes, I meant carp) I've been away WAAAY too long!
Citizen, I'm sorry to hear you have a funeral to go to!
What can y'all tell me about Macon, Georgia and, well, pretty much about the whole south end of the state? Due to recent events I have become very interested in finding information about this part of the state.
Wacky fun!

Isn't there some kind of huge crime lab/police headquaters thing? Vaguely recalling Cathy Reichs novels.
Oh! new series of Bones starts tonight! Yey, bickering nerds and David Boreanez looking hotter than ever.
Who cares if its a wee bit pants?

I haven't seen bones. But then, I never really thought DB was that cute.
I'm completely obsessed with Doctor Who now, so don't mind me. David Tennant is a hottie!
My Happy News for the day: got a late-is-better-than-never present from the 'rents. An iPOD! Which I had asked for, not really thinking I'd get it. It's pretty and shiny and there are been many bumps today, but I've got about 60 songs on it (including my Firefly CD) and that makes me happy. For now. My CDRom drive seems to have gone KAPUT.
YAY FOR MY PARENTS!

Bones has more going for it than just Boreanaz. Ie, a fine supporting cast and a somewhat fluffier take on the CSI ouvre; perhaps not as smart but also not quite so grim as the CSIs.

Yeah, Macon is really near Atlanta. Unfortunately I will not be able to attend D*C 2007. Maybe y'all can come and visit me afterward, though. Oh, wouldn't that be fun! I'll see what I can do about D*C '08, though.

i wasn't a big fan, until i saw an interview with him, and after the morose and almost statue like angel David himself was brilliant - energetic and all over the place with a wicked sense of humor, he ran rings around the muppet interviewing him, very clever and witty.
And in Bones he just seems cuter somehow.
it does have a lot of good points, i just can't help thinking that they could have made better use of some stories from the books and not been quite so cheesy sometimes - but the group she has are brilliant, in the books she just has her boss and some french canadian guy, Zack and the others are brilliant. (though the Seely character in the books is a total rogue, and theres no, ahem, professional distance - makes it a bit different)

OOH! *Sets up the chocolate fondue thingy and gets the chocolate flowing nicely*
There's a restaurant here called the Melting Pot (I don't know if it's a chain or anything). This restaurant has mastered the art of fondue--it's totally fantastic. My favorite, though, is dessert. They have, like, six or seven different types of chocolate fondue you can choose from, and they bring out a platter with different types of things to chocolate fondue such as: pineapple, bananas, marshmallows, pound cake, strawberries (yum!) and a slice of cheesecake. Oh... SOOO good!
And, JH, I won't be able to get to D*C '07 cuz, well, I'm going to be serving an LDS mission and I'm pretty sure that sci-fi conventions are out.
Wacky fun!

I LOVE the Melting Pot! (It is a chain)
Fondue is great. Whenever I have NYE parties, I do fondue (except when the parties are in hotels. Then I discuss the difficulties of fondue in hotel rooms with my brother and decide to forgo.)

Oh my gosh! HAHA, I have to kick myself for that one. Sheesh!
Fondue is fantastic--especailly when it's chocolate. The Melting Pot is fantastic, isn't it? I went there with this really awesome guy that I dated. We ordered drinks and mine came with a nice little fly in it. (plech!) The manager came out and gave us a cupon to come back for free dessert. SHINY! So, despite the fly, I love the Melting Pot... mmm... Too bad it's, like $80 for dinner for two.
Wacky fun!

Bloody cowards. Can't trust Prussians to help you in a fix. And if you are Prussian you can't trust a pissed off Brit with a huge army and navy. That was their fatal mistake.
