Greetings! This is the discussion thread for the newly-formed 76th Independent Battalion. We are planning on marching in the DragonCon parade as a Battalion of Independent soldiers.

And our new website (thanks, BWTP!):
http://76thbattalion.homestead.com/index.html

And a dedicated message board (signup is required)
http://76thbattalion.proboards59.com/index.cgi

We have a patch!

I'll see if I can get all of the relevant data in this first post...

The question of our history has been brought up and discussed in past threads. To end any debate and possible confusion, we now have one person tasked with the history of the 76th. DocJubal is now the "official historian" of the 76th. We decided it would be prudent to have ONE version of events, that way there is not the possibility of confusing or conflicting storylines. We ask everyone that has ideas about the history of 76th, that you not just post it on the threads. If you do have something you would like to add, contact DocJubal.

Also, to prevent any single post from being taken as a new rule for the 76th, BWTP or myself will post the new "rule". That way, there will be no confusion. We will have discussions on subjects, but when the decision has been made, we will officially post it. I hope that will clear up any confusion. For the most part, everything in the first post of each of these threads are the rules so far.

We have agreed that it is important to be at least somewhat uniform in appearance...vests, coat or smock, helmet, and weapon will be the same for each trooper...at least close in pants, shirts, and boots. There are two basic uniforms that we can see, and have broken them down as follows:

Type A...basically use Mal as a model. The major item of this uniform is the long coat.

Type B....use Zoe as a model. The vest is worn over a smock-type tunic, and the mail sleeves are visible.

Both types of uniform can be worn by anyone. The Type A uniform is not reserved for the officers and the Type B uniform is not reserved for the Enlisted.

Rather than cram the first post of the threads with photos, I have removed the "Other photos from the series" line here. If anyone would rather I put it back, let me know.

Pants-- A similar pair that most of the soldiers seem to have worn can be found here:
http://www.wwmerc.com/cgi-bin/category.cgi?item=CM83&type=store&catego
ry=3930

Another alternative has been found by Quandom and is located here:
http://www.blockaderunner.com/Catalog/catpg14.htm
BoomerGoodheart found yet another alternative here:
http://jas-townsend.com/product_info.php?cPath=1_4&products_id=461
Any of the above pants will work. It will be necessary to add a dark brown stripe down the sides.

Vest:
Tristan is designing one now:

I have decided to go with the simple three-line pattern to make the vest more generic as well as quicker and easier to construct.
These should be available for purchase beginning in February. For those that want the pattern and a cloth swatch to match, email me and I will get those to you in February as well.

Enclosed is the official "History of the 76th Independent Battalion", from DocJubal, the Battalion Historian:

Unification was not delayed by the brilliance of the Independent High Command, nor by possession of superior weapons and fleets, nor by materiel superiority on the part of the Independent faction. The War lasted five long years because of the almost incomprehensible devotion of the average volunteer to the Independent cause. Perhaps the clearest example of that devotion was the number of volunteer companies and battalions raised against Unification. These volunteer formations were often more effective than the planetary defense militias of the varied Independent world governments...

Yet another example was the 76th Independent Battalion. Raised on Dyton by a well-to-do merchant in dry goods, the 76th swiftly filled its ranks, and were deployed almost immediately. They soon earned their reputation as a determined, fearless unit, winning victories in the face of overwhelming odds...

A shortage of transport kept the 76th from being redeployed to New Kashmir, one of the few major campaigns that the 76th did not fight in. They were not so lucky at Du-Khang...

Details are frustratingly scant. What is known is that an Alliance light cruiser, the Warspite, overhauled and boarded the bulk freighter (Leaves of Autumn) that the survivors of the 76th were embarked on. In a sharp, savage ambush, the 76th drove off the Alliance customs and inspection detachment. The 76th then fought a boarding action of their own, subduing the crew and taking Warspite captive. A prize crew brought Warspite into orbit around Beaumonde, and the Independent Fleets’ Council paid a generous prize bounty to both the crew of the freighter and the 76th. With this prize money, and the renown gained in this exploit, the battalion was able to resupply, renew itself, and recruit with excellent personnel. Refreshed and back at strength, the 76th was summoned to the defense of Hera, arriving shortly before the Alliance became impenetrable...

The 76th lived up to their gallant reputation in Serenity Valley. They were one of only a few units to “hold the line” with the 57th “Overlanders”, well after their generals had given up...

Alliance losses in the last days of the battle, after the generals’ capitulation, were shocking. High Marshal Kurtz, surveying the carnage after the end of hostilities, remarked bitterly that “if this was the fruit of victory, may I never see defeat”. It is ominous – but not surprising, given such devotion – that rumours persist of an Independent resistance movement, which hopes to rise again...

Sort of. We have no E grades and no O grades. I simply put them on there so if you ordered from the site you knew which rank to buy. Our ranks are as follows:

Private (PVT) - Dropped redundant rank
Private First Class (PFC)
Corporal (CPL)
Sergeant (SGT)
Staff Sergeant (SSG)
Sergeant First Class (SFC)
First Sergeant - 1SG

Lieutenant - LT
Captain - CPT
Major - MAJ
Colonal - COL
General - GEN

I know there are PV2s and a 1LT on the site and that's simply because I havn't had time to run an update (been working the last few days) but it will be updated sometime tomorrow. I know a Battalion would never have a General, but as we grow and eventually get as big as the 501st Legion, could come a time where the good Colonal and myself need to be promoted out of the unit and run Command and Control from a battle cruiser, so I'm leaving that rank in place.

Post a pic here. I'm hoping we can all get a uniform helmet, though most pre-kevlar helmets will work if we paint them.

There were other things I wanted to say, but that was 4 hours ago when the site decided to take another dive today, so I forgot everything. I'll try and remember and post it here when I think of it.

One thing I wanted to mention, though is this site. It is becomming increasingly unstable and unreliable, it's the only message board I'm on that goes down 3+ times a day, so I ask that everyone that hasn't please, please, please sign up on our dedicated message board:

Evening, all.

I concur with BWTP...I am going to start shifting things over to the 76th message board. We will still use FFF.net for general talk, and announcements, but all of this info needs to be in a reliable place.

Boomer, I got the photo of the lanyard. It's gorgeous! Feel free to go ahead and post it along with prices, etc.

So, we'll keep posting to this site, but the majority of the decision-making/voting/etc. will occur on the other board. I reiterate BWTP's request, please sign up over there!

Roon, we are trying for a uniform look in helmets, coats, vests, smocks, weapons, and as much else as we can. So, please do send the helmet photo so we can take a look!

If anyone is so inclined, Ben finished up a leather shot glass for a Christmas gift, and has the picture of it posted on our website, http://www.legendaryleatherworks.com (look under Mugs & Bottles). The word (Serenifly) kind of blends in, what with the waxing and all. We're gonna play around with painting it to make it stand out more. I forgot to mention in my other post (possibly because I was distracted by the shininess of the lanyard) that I have decided to go with an idea Tristan suggested for the medics: I want to put the Chinese symbol for medic (or closest approximation) in red on a white background on the helmets. I was thinking that I would go ahead and get several helmets so I could do them all with one stencil (once I figure out what the symbol is) and you guys can get them from me at D*C.

Happy Wednesday 76ers!
Tristan, sir: My holidays are "dreaded" as I 'was' expecting a virtual flood of family for the week (and, poor me only gets ONE STINKIN' day off)..so I'd laid in a LARGE supply of Foodstuffs... NOW....we learn that Denver, Co. (where most of 'em are flying in from) is in the midst of a blizzard...so it's not lookin good that they'll get here!!... Ah, well we're hoping they can still make it. However, as two of the rellies are little old ladies; they may be a wee bit timid, what with the storm and all. We'll see! Other family members were driving up from Atlanta - and since it was mostly to see/visit with the little old ladies, they possibly could cancel too! I need a bigger freezer.

The lanyards are $10. Anyone who wants one, send me your name & screen name (so I know who's who), and I'll add it to my database list of deliveries. Unless, of course, you have to have it before D*C, in which case we can work out delivery. ali@legendaryleatherworks.com

For the helmets, I seem to recall the helmets in M*A*S*H being green with a faded red cross on it (this could be just TV stuff, and not actual military). However, if helmets have been worn that way, could you guys paint the helmets a tan/brown color and then chinese symbol over it? Seems to me the medics wouldn't stand out from afar that way...but then, whadda I know? LOL...

Helmet looks good. $19.50 w/ liner seems okay, unless of course you compare it to the $10.00 or so a piece that the Polish helmets Tristan & BWTP located.

I will have to check my local surplus store on Friday when I am off to price them out there.

Evening, all.

Roon, thank you for posting the helmet and the link. Those do look pretty good, but we found Russian helmets online for about $10.00 apiece. We are still waiting to hear back from BrownCoat1 on the local helmets (I just read that you'll be going Friday....thank you for that!).

And Roon, I am sorry, but the answer to your request about having a coat to just your waist is no. There are two types of uniforms, if you will read the first post again. Type A has a long coat over the vest that goes to the knees. Type B has an under-smock/tunic that will also come down to the knees. Those are the two choices for uniforms if you want to march with the 76th. Again, I am sorry to be short like this, but this is a decision that has already been made.

Unfortunately they removed the polish version from the site, only the Russian remains. The US helmet does seem more accurate, but I think the two are close enough that if people bought one over the other it wouldn't matter. Once they're repainted it'll be hard to tell the difference from afar.

Evening, BWTP.
You gave me the idea to look at the two helmets side-to-side...and I concur. They are close enough that they can both be used for our purposes.
So, 76th, we give you two, two helmet choices *insert Count Dracula laugh here*

We may have to find a spray paint brand/color that is universal so we can be sure the color will match. I know there are certain stores that exist all across the US, so that should not be too difficult. For our foreign recruits, we may be able to work something out where someone here will get the helmet, prepare it, and either mail it to you or give it to you at D*C. That will be something we can figure out after we firgure out the color.

Calling all historical-minded volunteers!

I'm looking for timelines derived from the events of the show and the BDM. There's a thread for this search over on the Battalion Boards:

http://76thbattalion.proboards59.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=un
ithist&thread=1166694208

Please take a gander, look at the one I found, tell me if you've got any better ones!

Thank you on both scores DocJubal!! I adore history and have a good head for details so I should be able to assist with the time line - I will report for duty over there shortly...

It's probably me watching too much of the TV show we have over here called 'Border Patrol' where they do things like deny entry on the grounds that they suspect the person has ulterior motives, maybe like marching in a battalion, or don't have enough money to stay for the period their ticket is for but have not obtained a work visa... things like that!

I will report for duty anon sir!

Morning 76th!

Tristan, I should have info about helmets and insignia patches by no later than Friday night. I'll be sure to post up what I find out.

As far as painting the helmets, have we decided on a color yet?

I have a question.....

Do you have to go to Dragon Con in order to be a member? I want to to join, but can't go to Dragon Con, can I still join?

Also if so..... How do you? I went to the site and saw the application form, but I couldn't figure out how to fill it out. I copied it off the screen and was going to email it to one of your guys, but I didn't know which one or what the addresses were.

Help?

Morning, 76th!
Doc, thank you for that link. I posted this over there, but I'll go ahead and post here, too...I have seen a few timelines, but that one has a great deal more detail. Good find!

Magda, just act all innocent and they'll let you through.

BrownCoat1, I am looking forward to the info on the helmets and insignia.
As for the helmet color, I am not entirely sure yet. I will be looking at some screen caps and will probably rewatch the flashback scenes to see. I am going to assume some sort of a brown.

FireStalker, no, you do not have to march to join. The only thing we ask is that you don't present yourself in public as a member of the 76th until after DragonCon in September of 2007. That will be our first official "unveiling".
Please email the app to me tristan71@cableone.net

Tristan,

who amongst our numbers will be talking with the folks at Dragoncon? or are we working through the SEBC? Either way looks like the folks at Ariel Ambulance Rescue Group (AARG) could use our influence to help get dragoncons interest in the ambulance being displayed at D*con (something they are really hoping to do this coming year)

Browncoats are the shiniest folks in the 'verse

Afternoon, ArtCat!
We are marching under the auspices of the SEBC, so they are still the main contact to D*C.
The Ariel Ambulance would be shiny to have at D*C! WickedWren is the contact I have been using to the SEBC through FFF.net.
Let command get some things squared away, and then we will talk about what we can do to help the AARG guys.
Thank you for that update!

In looking at that, I also see that O'Tearney was mispelled...and I just now caught it...I am not sure if it's something you can fix, and then once fixed, I would have to find each person using it and tell them there is a new one...it may not be worth the effort...

Evening guys,

I'm officially on holiday! Although its such a relief to be away from the office, I am now seperated from my computer, and have to rely on my sister's good nature to allow access to the internet. I don't know how often I'll be able to visit till 15/01/2006.

So I'll try to keep up to date and will visit the new board whenever I can.

I haven't checked out all the new decisions yet, so I'll comment as soon as I can.

If I can't speak to you guys before Christmas, Have a good one!!

Question on pants.

In "Heart of Gold" I am certain that Reynold's pants have belt loops. In our recommendations, we definitely have chosen the mid-19th versions that do NOT. I'm good either way, but was wondering if I am the only one who saw this.

ALso, although I coined it, "The Spirit of 76" is not as good a battalion motto as "Hold the Line". THe latter is an action with unambiguous meaning - mine is highly allusive and clever, but I'd think with Idependents directness is a value.

In Service,

Evening, 76th!
Sister, we will be waiting on the photos!
As far as shipping the rest to me, please email me at tristan71@cableone.net when you get a chance.

Quandom, I would have to watch the episode again...but I can tell you for certainty that the three types of pants we are accepting for the 76th are the ones listed in the first post on this thread. They are all the relatively high-waisted, button-front type without belt loops. They are all held up by suspenders.
Hope that answers that question?

As for the motto, I am still waiting on the submissions on the Proboard to be finished...there are quite a number of shiny ones already!

Ok, you artsy type folk in the Battalion, please let us others know the best way to add the brown side stripe for the pants; material paint, ribbon? What will work best and be easiest? We may want to decide on one way to stripe, since we're being fairly uniform on the other parts of the uniform.

I must tell you that I'm simply green with envy about you Aussies being ahead by a day.I feel somehow cheated living in this hemisphere.(Wonder what I could do with an extra day...hmmm?)Although,I don't know, that whole Christmas in the summer thing, how did you ever get used to it?
BTW my dog sitter,Rebecca is from Australia. You must know each other.Shall I give her your regards?
Cheers,

Gen.Naughtyman

Well I was thinking that you'd be a prime candidate for spending a lot of time in your room when I posted that actually! What do you expect with a name that basically says you're up to something??? I suppose it depends on which pretty browncoat lass you have sharing a room with you though... doesn't it?

What's to get used to... Christmas happens in December!! It's hot in December!!! Now... snow, winter, chimneys actually being used and all - I have no idea how Santa gets to deliver anything in the Northern hemisphere??

Rebecca???!!! Wow!! Of course! Please say 'hi' for me!!!

I'm working on my profile - and having heaps of fun with it... VerseExplorer (my Kaylee-clone) and I are working on a common back story so that our shared history goes beyond the battalion!

Don't look at me in that tone of voice young man... go to your room at once!!

Good Morning from Tennessee...FFG and Magda... I hear your concern about pants/striping... I check with our locally meager supply of sewing bits and pieces..(oh, I do NOT sew..allergic!).. very little in the way of pre-made tapes and things; closest I could find (and I was starting to get all twitchy and itchy as I really, really don't sew..and the close contact with piles of fabrics, threads and things were making me nervous)..was some grosgrain(sp?) ribbon of about a 1" width in dark brown. I'm also a bit particular about pants...women built differently than men and all; I believe under "fashionably brown" in the the FFF Marketplace...there is a costume thread that shows a few options on Zoe pants that are basically tan stretch jeans. I'm seeing on our Web site that the 'preferred' pants are from the old west outfitters, but I hope there's a little flexibility there as I don't think "man-pants" would work too well for me. (Plus..the hemming...that would require sewing, too; altho even in my neck of rural Tenn. I think I could find a tailor to do that; it's just the fit I worry about). Anyway..I'm sure our magnificent Col. Tristan will have some thoughts on that.
My thought (as a private..wearing uniform "B") was that since I'll have a tunic with the vest on the outside, the pants wouldn't matter quite so much as the waist area would be pretty covered up so jeans might be okay..Please respond if you think differently.
Now..as to boots for us women soldiers, I've done a little research and will have some ideas once I get a shipment from Zappos (great on-line store; ya get free shipping in both directions if you don't like the boots!) I do have tall Harley motorcycle boots but they are black and have two very visible zippers..and I guess the intent is to wear the pants inside the boots, yes? so a wider calf might be necessary for some. Also on the same costume thread as mentioned above, they refer to some basic, brown cowboy-style boots. I've looked around and Frye seems to make a few (pricey, tho) that could also work.
In the pictures from the series we're using as guides, it appears that after some time the boots were wrapped with straps, rags, etc...but we're going as a relatively 'new' battalion so I'm thinking either a plain-shafted brown boot or one with actual straps?
I think this is my longest post, ever; but as our anticipated holiday guests are not coming, now due to the Denver blizzard I've got some time on my hands!

Afternoon, all.
Tha holidays approach, and I am just online for a little while.

Naughtyman, yes, the Colonel WOULD mind if a Private reported in as a General. Now, if you meant something like "Greetings! I am a "general" naughty man", that would be alright.

Sister, let me address your concerns first.
I realize women and men are built differently. As a costumer, I have had to find this out the hard way sometimes. However, the pants that have been chosen will work for both male and females. I did a search on the Wild West Mecantile site, found Women's clothing ( http://www.wwmerc.com/cgi-bin/Category.cgi?category=4000&type=store), Trousers ( http://www.wwmerc.com/cgi-bin/Category.cgi?category=4140&type=store), and clicked on the Frontier Classics Trousers ( http://www.wwmerc.com/cgi-bin/category.cgi?item=CM83&type=store&catego
ry=4140
). Turns out they are the same thing as the link in the first post ( http://www.wwmerc.com/cgi-bin/category.cgi?item=CM83&type=store&catego
ry=3930
)
except that the "store&category" number is different. I am not sure if there is a difference, but if the females would be interested in ordering using that Category number, fell free to do so!
Jeans, even dyed jeans, would not have the same look as these type of pants.
The boots...we are trying to stick to brown boots, again for uniformity's sake. There are a few links to lace-up style boots in the first post, and all of them are brown. We are not saying you HAVE to purchase those boots, but that is the style we are aiming for. Slip-on style boots would also work, but we would prefer not to have the square-toed Engineer look nor the tooled-leather cowboy look. If anyone can find a good link to a simple, good-looking brown slip-on style boot, please email it to me so I can check it out and possibly post it as an alternate footwear. Also, if you have a pair of boots that you would like to wear, please email me a photo so I can see what they look like.

FFG, about the brown stripe...that is something I was eventually going to get to, but as it has been brought up, I am realtively open for suggestions. The stripe I used on my Mal pants is a 1" wide grosgrain iron-on ribbon that I stitched down once it was in place. The reason for the iron-on part was to keep it in place while sewing...I have discovered that it is a pain to either pin ribbon, or try to keep it in line while sewing it on...the stickiness helps.
We have at least three types of pants to choose from, so you are right in suggesting using the same color brown stripe for all. I will look in the local fabric stores after the holidays are over and see if I can find something that is widely available. I also open the "florr" to those that want to see what they can find, too. Please go ahead and look and post on the Proboard. I'll start a thread there in the next few days to be devoted to the pants.

To those I missed directly, hello and happy holidays. I will try to get back online before Xmas!

Hi Sister,
Since Colonel Tristan responded I won't have to mention jeans being a no-no. I'm going with the type B uniform as well but will still be getting a pair of the approved pants. As you mention the fit really won't matter too much because of the tunic over top but it seems there is womans fit, so we should be ok.

As for boots, I'll have to watch the episode again but I was planning on being able to ocate something at a thrift store that should comply. I'll send the Colonel a photo.

Sounds like your foray into the sewing section (itch, itch) gave some good ideas for the brown stripe. Seems it may be the groosgrain stuff. We'll wait for the word from Colonel T. on that.

Happy Holidays all!

Wow!!! Artcat.. I mean WOW!!!

That looks amazing and I am so excited at the prospect of seeing them 'in the flesh'... as it were! I was Christmas shopping today (yeah - I know I was out of my mind since it is actually Christmas Eve here now...) and I kept popping in to this shoe shop to look at boots, and that menswear shop to see what kind of braces/suspenders they had... I even went into a hair product place to price hair pieces for my Greek goddesses outfit (see Toga Party thread) but I guess that just goes to show how excited and focused I am on the whole experience!!

Congratulations on an amazing job! Good luck with the leather workers...

Glad to see the knitted mail is working out alot better then my actual mail. The rings I got are too big, and it's not like I can just return them. I'll have to order a ton of the smaller ones and start over from scratch.

It happens. It was my fault really, I should have planned ahead. But in a rush I ordered rings that were too large and now I've gotta deal with it. As it stands, I think I'll try and work with what I have, but if it doesn't look like they'll work, I'll simply wear only the type A uniform, as opposed to wearing the type A in the parade and the type B in the con. Whatever I decide, it'll still work.

I'm glad you like the board. I'm happy to offer my time and am glad to see that I'm making a contribution to this and that contribution is being used to it's fullest.

Artcat: The mail sleeves look phenomenal!!
FFG: I went with the wildwestoutfitters women's pants per Col. Tristan's suggestion..(plus the women's braces)...It nearly killed me to measure myself and order the size the site suggested... Since I normally wear several (like ten!!) sizes smaller!! I will let you know how they fit when they get here next week sometime...Surely vanity sizing couldn't have gotten THAT far away from reality??!! I guess we could use my butt as target practice...
Artcat - can't wait for you to post instructions that I can relay to the folks at Imaginknit as your work looks truly, truly wonderful!

here are the directions I loosely followed

http://upstagereview.org/CostumesArticles/Chainmail.pdf

I found knitting the whole sleeve and then dying them to be much more successful, use RIT black Dye it worked great.

i will post more details over on our board :)

Hey Sister! I will be interested in hearing about the pants as I am thinking of ordering some myownself (though I'm going to hang off for a bit since I'm losing cm's at the moment) but I was struggling with making sense of the sizing so I didn't think about it too much!

I think that Artcat is amazing - what an awesome job she's done... and Baby, I am starting to feel like a computer geek as I am really getting the hang of two totally different forums now - our new home is so shiny and simple to use!!

Oh yeah - it's Christmas Day here so ... Happy Christmas 76th! Enjoy your R & R everyone!!

I have vague directions up there its really a very simple pattern ( I am by no means a pro or even intermediate knitter)

I used size 13 needles and knit a flat rectangle

cast on 24 or so (does not have to go all the way around your arm because the drawings indicate it buckles, you can make a full sleeve if desired, eyeball it but keep track of how many you cast on because you will have to duplicate it on a second sleeve.

knit 1 row
purl 1 row
knit 1 row
purl 1 row
and continue this pattern till it is your desired length, it will look like this but white

my sleeve measures from just past my wrists up to my upper arm just above my bicep because the material is thick and i did not fancy the thick material in my armpit plus the apron thing should cover it, your choice,

when you reach the desired length, bind off and start the second sleeve.

once you have both sleeves, dye them dark grey/ black using RIT dye (from this point you can follow the directions via that link)
