Hmmm... Last time I checked Britain was very much apart of Europe. Don't think I've ever heard anyone speak of Europe and not take it as read that the UK, Ireland... or the channel islands for that matter are a part of it. (O_o) Sorry, just giving you a hard time. There was a thread awhile back that was titled something like "Where are you from". Look for it in the archives. A lot folk respond to it and there were loads of Brits, Germans, Dutch,and Scandinavians. I've never seen anyone post that they were from Spain or from France. The French thing I've been kinda curiuos about since the DVDs come with a French language selection. Someone named Voss was on the board very recently and he was in Italy. Shiney!

This is actually my first post, (having signed on yesterday), although I've been lurking for a while. Another UK one (near-ish Oxford), and relatively pro-European (as said, a lot of people here might not agree, but I like the idea of the US as the 26th European state )

i downloaded the epis and i´m planning to buy the DVDs soon...
sadly they didnt air it here until now but its rumored to air in the fall or so !

I`m a big Whedon fan for some time now so i just had to check out Firefly !

As for the shindigs i think we could start out little .. it would take some time to plan them anyway!

Sounds just like me. :D I downloaded the episodes too because I'm such a big Whedon fan. (I wonder what Mal will sound like in the German version. Maybe they'll use the same voice as Angel. *L*)

First problem: WHERE would the shindig take place?
The easiest and cheapest place to get to is probably London... but once you're there it's very expensive.
I visited Glasgow last month. That was a VERY positive experience. Dirt cheap to get there (RyanAir), cheap accomodations and if you go in the off season... all drinks are half off!

Somewhere in Germany isn't a bad idea either come to think of it... Hotels are cheap in relation to the standard which is better than a lot of other places in Europe I could mention. *shudder*

Hm i think London would be an idea .. but maybe not directly in London , as this as you said would be very expensive but maybe somewhere near London .. a surburb or so.

Yup, RyanAir uses Stansted airport which is about 45 min away. Very convinient for me though since the airport in my own is a RyanAir stop. I fly form here to London directly.
In the end, somewhere other than London would probably be better though.

I just want Firefly to start airing here in Sweden. I wrote the network that has bought the rights to it (tv4) but they were really vague on when they were going to start showing it. Which doesn´t really surprise me all that much since they´ve had "Angel" in their archives for about 4 years now. Go figure.

There’s a huge difference between being sceptic towards a big European alliance (which I am too btw... not being a believer in the success of such endeavours... history should have taught us something…) and wanting to jump into another alliance across the big puddle. Imho there are other ways to bring the European countries closer together.
But that’s not why I started this topic doggonit! Just wanted a show of hands in the forum for all the active posters who live within a reasonable distance between each other.

I agree, I´m pleased they show "Alias", I just can´t understand why they buy the rights to a tv-show and then just let it dust away in the archives. Let´s hope that doesn´t happen to Firefly. I want everyone to see it.

nice to see that Firefly has gotten to others here in Europe. No power in the 'verse can stop us!!!!
Does anyone know, if a German network has already bought firefly? I don't have TV, but know some people here who would like to watch it.
I bought the DVD and try to get it around to friends. But it's mighty difficult, because you have to make DVD players region free first.
Anyone knows if the region 2 DVD will have different languages?

Never been to Sweden and I wouldn't personally mind travelling over there but I think given that Brits may be the majority of Euro Browncoats the Shindig might be better attended here

I'd suggest outside of London though. It would be considerably cheaper to arrange

Like I mentioned before, the easiest place to get to in Europe is probably London. So joking aside, I have to agree with the somewhere outside London plan.

I´ve seen both Angel and Buffy in German (and French for that matter, while we´re on the subject of dubs). If I lived in Germany I think I´d long to hear the original voices. Most German speaking movie buffs I know buy DVDs directly from the US in order to get around the dubbing.

I totally agree with you! I love watching movies, but in most cases, the german dubbing is really really bad, and it's always much more interesting and honest to a movie / series episode to watch it in its original language and to hear the actor's real voices. I could not imagine to see Firefly one day dubbend on german TV, they would ruin it like all the other shows...

I’ve had it explained to me (mainly by French speakers) that the reason why they dub is A) many people don’t speak other languages B) they are very protective of their own language and don’t want too much foreign influence.

I can maybe understand A)… although I think subtitles are far faaaaaaaar better since you get to hear the original performance and have a chance to learn the language. As for reason B), that’s just plain silly. There’s always been a lot of foreign language influence on all European languages. It’s a part of the natural evolvement of a language and has been for as long as humans came up with the concept of language in the first place. Ack! I’m rambling again, aren’t I? (I could go on about this subject forever. I’ll just go ahead and round it up now.)

Anyway, I have a hard time deciding which the most stupid alternative is: The way some European countries choose to dub TV shows and movies, or the way the census in Northern American puts a gag on people’s rights to free expression. (I.e. not allow certain words to be used.) Stupidity is alive and well on both sides of the pond.

You're correct, as a movie buff from Germany I buy my DVDs directly in the US or from import-shops.
Not only is the original language on it (most german-made region-2 discs contain the original language as well, but mostly because of the superior quality the US-releases mostly are produced in, compared to German ones.

Farscape is broadcast with multi-channel audio with its original language included, on some Pay-TV staiton(SciFi Channel). I believe germany's TV is going to get better in that respect.

On the "Shindig"-topic, I want to add that the cologne-bonn Airport, near which I conveniently live, might be as easy to get to as Stanstedt(spelling?) via small-rate airlines.
However, London as a city is supercool, and I do not really care where it would be held, as I will be totally there, as work permits. :)

Been lurking for a while before joining, but we were fortunate enough to catch the real pilot on sci-fi (completely by accident). Only half watched that one, not knowing what we'd stumbled on, but from The Train Job onwards, we were hooked.

The "Firefly weekend" helped as well, of course!

The Blackpool thing sounds really cool, if you´re into conventions. I´d go to it anyway just for the fun of a convention. Not entierly convinced it´s the ideal time for a FF shindig though. Imho, it should be two separate events. (Not that we can´t have our cake and eat it too. ;-) )

To answer your question SouthernMerc, the origins of "Yankee" have been debated for quite some time, and to this day the Oxford English Dictionary says the source of the word is "unascertained." Perhaps the most widely accepted explanation was given by H.L. Mencken, a well-known newsman-scholar, who argued that Yankee derives from the expression Jan Kaas, literally "John Cheese." This supposedly was a derogatory nickname bestowed on the Dutch by the Germans and the Flemish in the 1600s.

The English later applied the term to Dutch pirates, and later still Dutch settlers in New York applied it to English settlers in Connecticut, who were known for their piratical trading practices. I do go to the cinema (also dubbed here) though, because they seem to get movies mostly right. they seem to spend much more money translating and finding suitable voices for movies. but tv shows are done so cheap they sound like someone reading the telephone directory when being really bored. and the end of it is that germans think american TV shows are stupid and boring. but it's really a 'problem' here with people not being able to understand english and not being willing to learn. that's something the french and the germans seem to have in common. I know that my mom will never be able to watch english tv because she just never learnd english at school and now she's almost 60. but I don't get younger people that just don't want to even try. I have lots of friends that never ever even once tried to watch something in english although they all learned english at school. it's just not 'normal' around here I guess.

we germans fight for our language even though I don't really know why. everyone wants to understand other peoples better yet when there's a new word around we have to find a german equivalent because simply using the english one would somehow rob us of our cultural identity or whatever. I'm really puzzled by that. maybe germans think everyone should learn german instead but that's just a stupid idea and trying to keep our own language by force is just building walls instead of bridges.

Oh, and another possiblility, rather than London, for a Euro shindig, is Cambridge - right next to Stanstead airport, and slightly cheaper than London (although admittedly not *that* much). Although I could probably swing some floorspace either there or here in Oxford.

Like the idea a lot though :)

At least you have the possibility to subscribe to the Sci-Fi channel. In Scandinavia that option was taken away a couple of years ago… right in the middle of an exciting season of Battlastar Gallactica too. (Grrr!) Apparently the channel does moderately well and is only “guaranteed” to go on in the UK and the Benelux countries.

Back on the subject of dubs, I more than sympathise with your frustration. I visited Germany two times last year. Once for an extended week-end in Berlin and later for a week in Hamburg. I had to search high and low for cinemas that didn’t dub… and these are BIG cities… can’t even imagine how hard it is in smaller places.
The problem with dubs is, as you hinted, that once you’ve started it’s hard to stop. There’s an older generation to take into account, as well as a big resistance to change in general. Simplistically I would have to say that you have to draw the line somewhere and stop the madness. It would be very hard for a while, to be sure, but in the long term everyone wins.

On a personal note I know for a fact that I wouldn’t speak half the languages that I do speak today, hadn’t it been for the fact that there were so many different languages in the TV shows I watched growing up. I’m simply not the kind of person who learns languages by sitting in a class room and I feel it’s fundamentally wrong to rob those people who want to learn of the same possibility.

Pudor: The London area in general seems to be a good idea… seeing how there’s so many different airports (not just Stansted obviously).
Floor space sounds very very good. (A gym perhaps, or what were you thinking?) You’re the first person in the general area of the intended shindig to sign in so that’s great!

it's _not_ UK SciFi but a german version. don't know if they have anything in common. and UK and US SCiFi seem not to be too closely related either, I think.

and I just come from a very disturbing thread on a german video-related board. they were bitching about the very thing we here are welcoming: the end of german-dubbed-only TV in germany. they are writing hatemail to SciFi for daring to plan to show the fourth season of Farscape only in english. it's never been shown in germany before and is not yet dubbed. so maybe SciFi will cave in and not show it at all or if they can afford it dubb it.

I really feel sorry for myself for living in this ignorant country sometimes. I was born here and there are open minded people her too but we seem to be fewer than I thought.

I wrote an eMail to the address mentioned in the thread and told them (SciFi) my version of things. congratulated them on their courage and asked them if there's something apart from subscribing that I can do to help end this madness.

Oh, I just meant sleeping space (people I know with rooms/houses). If plenty of people were coming, it might be worth hiring the function room of a pub (I know one in central london that we could have for nothing, but the drinks are normal london prices - i.e. just under £3 a pint). :)

I'd assume most people would fly in to Stanstead, as it's dead cheap. Heathrow and Gatwick tend to be full-fare, but I'm talking from the point of view of a penniless student ;) Alternatively, Oxford means I don't have to move from my room, and I could put people up in my nice empty 5-bedroom house :> (out of term-time).

I'd be interested to know how many people would be up for it, anyway.

look at www.scifi.de if you want to make yourself either more jealous or less. I'm not sure they have that many exciting things to watch yet but they startet to send Farscape a while ago and it's the first series they show with german and english audio. hopefully they will stick to that at least. maybe even be bold and show some new shows without paying for synchro and thus having us wait for 2 years for it.

nah, don't have to respond there. they don't understand english and they don't want to learn and they PAY for the GERMAN SciFi and it's outrageous that they even consider sending something in english only. no need to argue there...

Idefix: Sometimes when you download movies or episodes online there are dual audio tracks. You can pick either to hear the original English or the German dub via a special media player. In an ideal world – multiple audio tracks would be something that you could choose in your TV, like you sometimes can pick subtitles. Wouldn’t that be great? People who feel uncomfortable with subtitles could pick the dub and people who want to hear the original performance could have that too.

It's "BIG" Oxford - I'm doing Classics here. Sadly the sci-fi group here doesn't seem to be particularly into Firefly, which is a pain. At some point I hope to educate them :) But exams this term, so not right now.

Can I pass this on to some people not on this board?

A bunch of Firefly fans who are seasoned con-goers were trying to set something up like a Shindig up, but were getting very little interest in the UK so far.

It would make sense that we all work together, and share our resources.

I know that as a first step, the crowd going to Fusion are planning a shindig-of-a-sorts at that event, as am involved in that. The plan is to get to know each other and then if there is the interest, think about a proper Shindig.

And the more fans from across Europe the better.

Heathrow is a good venue, mainly for the ease of access for the rest of Europe, and good hotels which are used to holding cons. I know from the Stargate cons that the German fans have no problem getting there. And there are many cheap flights to Heathrow at present

Ryanair fly to Stanstead, which is a bit out of the way, but there is a bus-link to Heathrow airport, which is very good, as many of the Irish fans know.

Oooh - I went through Henley the other day on a 'short cut' from London to Oxford. It looked really nice - like Oxford, but quieter. That was the result of my 22-second appraisal, anyway :)

Sadly, my course is so non-vocational and pointlessly academic that I'm likely to end up with nothing to do at the end of it ;)

Well, I guess there's a hotel at Heathrow, or a short-ish drive to somewhere more interesting (I recommend Henley

A female Firefly fan from Finland here. (check out all the f's, lol)

I'm just rummaging through older threads since I'm kinda new so bear with me.

They started showing Firefly here in March and use Fox order so it took me 4 episodes to get really intrigued. Currently we have Serenity and the US-unaired trio left to watch.

I consider myself very lucky to be built in a way that I can see and appreciate all this shininess. And I'm feeling beyond giddy when thinking about the upcoming movie.

I know there is discussion about which airport would be the most central or convenient... and I don't mean to plug Heathrow (although personally very convenient), just wanted to say that there are several other attractions nearby: Windsor, WIndsor Castle, Windsor Great Park, Legoland, Thorpe Park.... in case people wanted to make a weekend of it.

I 'spect the same can be said of Luton (Whipsnade springs to mind) and Manchester.

But I've written this now so I will post it.
