Question about 'Safe'

Ok, just noticed this.

The hillfolk who capture Simon, presumeably because he's a doctor... how did they know he was a doctor?

They must've known, because they mention it. It's possible, I suppose that they just kidnapped a random person on the offchance that they're a doctor, but that seems a little stupid, to be honest.

Any ideas?

They were hiding behind Mal when he was telling Simon to take River to town...You can hear some rustling branches behind Mal.

Wow. Really makes you thin hard, doesn't it?

One thing I had always pondered was when Serenity sets down, the rabbit-stripping hillfolks say something like "People like that don't come 'roud here unless they have something, and if we need it, we take it." Hmm. Serenity is considered a piece of go se. Maybe the hillfolk see value in it ...

Back on topic, I have no idea. Did he tell them after he was captured? I was thinkign something along the lines of "I have a crew to care for! I'm there doctor! So let me go!" but in a less corny way. Maybe it would be the clothes, but the clothes could be any rich person. Maybe because rich people are educated so they decided to take the richest-looking person.

Well, a 26 ft. sail boat may be a piece of crap to a guy who owns a 50 ft. yacht. But, it would look awful grand to someone pulling for crab for their dinner along the shoreline. Hmmm?

Yeah while Mal is talking to him it shows a shot of the bushes rustling. At first you don't really know what it is, but I think you're supposed to realize later that it's the kidnappers.

I had a look at some of the original scripts, and as it turns out Mal mentions that Simon is a doctor. They could have simply overheard this.

Just a slight nitpick, here; the shooting script was changed dramatically, so the quoted lines were never said. What was said was "I'm starting to think you've got a little too much time on your hands, Doctor." and it's right before this line that we see the bushes rustle. Mal and many others in the crew frequently refer to Simon as 'Doctor' so it didn't seem at all forced or awkward. In fact, it wasn't until the fourth or fifth viewing that it really clicked with me.
So everyone had it basically right, just the specifics that were a little off. 'Safe' is the only script in my Official Companion that had such drastic changes to the final version. Nearly all the changes are noted at the end of the script in the Companion.

i was reading an interview with joss that said originally tim and he HATED 'safe' and did extensive rewrites including all the flashbacks being completely new. "it came out ok" was the verdict.
does the original script exist???

and i've lost the frackin link to the interview - so if anyone knows...

You could at least put the original version on and a note that you changed the other version.

yeah about that...youtube changed the music on one of the movies i believe...they said the music was a copyright infringement...just posted your awesome vids to youtube so browncoats would enjoy them...nothing was intentional and i certainly won't post them if you if you request...sorry my friend

You mean how did BDH find the Tams? Or the kidnappers?

If BDH, at night, a town full of torches, viewed from space and considering Simon's near-miraculous talent for alienating folk, probably easy to top the list of candidate locations for investigation.
