How do you add your own avatar?

I want to add my own avatar but I can't figure it out. Clicking on custom gets me nowhere. It says to email someone but who is that? Haken?
Any help, suggestions, or reports of prior experience would be useful. Thanks.

Yea, I figured it was Haken and I don't wanna bug him, thats why I never emailed it to him. Its not that big of a deal and I'm just so happy he's created the site that I really don't feel like pushing my luck.

Having just (sorta) figured out how to do it, I will tell you. Host whatever it is you wanna use on photobucket, then paste the image tag into the space for your tagline on your profile. It should pop up the way mine does, right under your name. Hey, it's something, right?

Also...and I had to learn thru trial and error...

If you already have a pic in your profile from the ones you can choose from, you must first click "none" (referring to avatar)where you update your profile, click update your profile, log out of fff.net, clear your cookies on your browser, close your browser, reopen and relog on to fff.net.

I was having a heck of a time getting the pic of Zoe off, but what finally did it was the above.

If you think you've got it, head over to Troll Country, find a test thread and test away. These won't post to the main page.

(The Image tag of which PhoenixRose posted above is the 2nd line under the image in photobucket.)

Do you have your own photobucket to host it on, though? I don't mind hosting one or two, but too many and bandwidth will start to be an issue I think. Wouldn't want all of them vanishing if I exceed!

you get rid of the "photobucket.com" stuff at the beginning, leaving only the image address and the .

like above, and without the spaces.

Huh. Doesn't break my monitor, though I tend to have it set at maximum resolution. Which has it's drawbacks... {/digression}

I said I wouldn't bother you again, PRose, but I'd be remiss in not thanking you and Mavoureen for the tutorials about custom avatars. Those involved have been credited in my FFFn profile.

So: thanks!

Also, to clarify my earlier post on this thread, I was kinda attempting to "bump" the idea of contributing some cashy money to Haken for this site. Back in the day, emailing and asking him to put up a custom avatar was the accepted way. However, this do-it-yourself style certainly saves Haken having to deal with any number of requests in his inbox, so I figure it's shiny.

Still, a Paypalled fiver, every now and again, from them as can afford it, wouldn't be amiss, eh?

Just a quick clarification; credit where credit is due:

I credit Roxyfreefall with figuring this all out. I saw how she had done it and using the avatar PR customed for me a few months ago, was able to figure out how to clear your old avatar to post the new one.

PR quickly used her skills to create some extremely nifty avatars she was kind enough to post for all.

Hmm. That's odd, my resolution is set at 1024*768 which is the most common resolution for browsing the internet:

http://www.w3schools.com/browsers/browsers_stats.asp

The next most common is even lower than that.

Your avatar is 550 long, plus it displays the date on the same line, plus there's the scroll bar, plus the thread details and the other threads in the same forum on the left.

Yes, Roxy did it first, though for awhile it didn't register with me that it was in a different position, then I saw that Mavs had done it. It took me a few tries to figure out how to do it myself

And sorry, I'm not trying to be snarky, but that one site is the only one that says low res is common in my search so far. http://www.upsdell.com/BrowserNews/stat_trends.htm says "Most users have 1024x768 and higher, but a large minority have 800x600. A very small and shrinking number, <1%, have 640x480" I have it turned all the way up on my home computer for photoshop and such, and I've found MOST posts here display best at that res, as though the poster also has it set that high. Might be interesting to poll the users, yes?

The site I linked states that 1024*768 is the most common resolution which is pretty high res, and that is still being broken by your banner. It's nothing major but it does turn every page into one you have to scroll left and right on.
