when does this vote finish?

Hopefully not until we have snuck in and stolen teh number 1 slot ... but it would be good to have a time-frame!

As far as anyone has been able to find out, this vote isn't scheduled to end until shortly after the sun burns out.
Seriously, there is no scheduled end date. It is a 'Long Term' survey.

I'm pretty sure the guy that runs the site said that it's gonna be an on-going thing for the forseeable future. Which obviously makes it important that we vote as often ad possible for as long as possible!

Oh, and...

A few things:

First, here is a post from the voting thread on the scifi.com BSG forum:

Quote:

One Month Progress Report

Well, it has been one month since I started this thread and I thought I'd give everyone an idea of our progress in that one months time. Thanks to everyone for being persistant and making our progress so fruitful.
Total Votes Cast = 9375
Total Spots Gained = 9 (43rd to 34th)
Hightest One day Vote Count = 449 (Jan 5th)
Lowest One day Vote Count = 131 (Dec 10th)
Shows in the Top 40 with Lower Weekly Averages = 36 (That's right, only 3 shows are consistently outvoting us on a weekly basis, The Top 3 of course!)
Approximate Days to reach the Top 30 = 5 days
Approximate Days to reach the Top 20 = 26 days
Needless to say, these numbers are impressive! BSG 2004 is the fastest mover in the countdown and is poised to glide through the competition like a hot knife through butter! Let's keep moving and show everyone what a great show Battlestar Galactica 2004 really is! :D

I thought those figures might interest everyone, espcially Flattop. Also here is a post from the voting thread I started on the scifi.com Firefly board.

Nope, just the one. As far as I know, we only have one multiple-handle nutjob on this board. I take it as a point of pride that I've made it onto his/her people-I-hate list. Ah, troll-baiting. Is there anything more fun?

You tried all the usual? (Delete cache (MANUALLY), reset browsing history, set pages to update every time they are visited, reload the page.
If feeling really upset you can try (on a windows box):
Open a Command line interface
***i p c o n f i g -release /all
***i p c o n f i g -renew /all
(remove the stars and the spaces in the first word)
you may have to play with that one a bit to get it to work properly. My - and / may be in the wrong places.

Can also try turning off the home router modem/cable interface box, count to 100 in Chinese (just to make it take longer), shut down the computer, then plug the router/modem back in and reboot the computer.

Continuing the bump mania.

Your votes for Lexx are greatly appreciated, but those westerns down there scare me :( I wouldn't be happy if another western passed us by, so I think I'm gonna offer a deal to Farscape fans as well. A small deal, not more than 50 shows for each show more, which shouldn't be a thread to you. I hope it isn't a problem for you for our show to have two deals, but I wanted to notify you, so you don't say I'm a traitor or something. This means nothing to our deal, it's still on and still profitable for both :) I'm gonna do it tomorrow, so if there are any objections, please speak now or remain silent forever ;)

Understand Lexx loves you, but we need more to stay with the best!

As a follow up to my request for data:

I'm using two seperate spreadsheets for now.
1 sheet is the 'new' one that tracks the entire top 40. I'm missing data there.

The other sheet only has the Top 10 shows (by vote totals), and is where I get my daily updates (below) and charts from. This sheet has all of it's data.

Today's Numbers:

Total Votes (Range to show)
Xena(1): 178536 (64686)
Bonanza(2): 146302 (32452)
Firefly(3): 113850 (0)

Votes Gained Today (Wk.Avg.) Avg.
Xena(1): 571 (563) 527
Bonanza(2): 723 (682) 612
Firefly(3): 982 (910) 748

Closure Rate Today (Wk.Avg.) Avg.
Xena(1): 411 (347) 221
Bonanza(2): 259 (228) 136

Would anyone be interested in a little custom firefly voting application? I've put something small together - it's not exactly pretty, but it is functional. You hit a button and it counts down 60 minutes, and then "pings" and brings the app to the front until you hit the 'Vote' button to stop it. Oh, and as a bonus it gives you a new Firefly quote every minute.

If anyone's interested, I can post it up. Oh, and I guess I'd take feature requests too.....

That is funny. My handle is "FlyVote" because I was writing "FlyVote", a voting application as you described. Made for Win/Linux/OSX. Still rough, but was in the effort of refining it. I was even including quotes...

I was thinking of having the program open a window to the vote page and then opening a page on a server with some charts, much like the "Flattop" graphs.

Oh well, that saves me having to finish it...

Edit: Needless to say (too late) I'd like to see your app!

Being able to pull in stats might be quite cool - I'll have to look into that too :)

Do you mean it might work for mac and you just need someone to check or you need someone to look through the code and get it to work on a mac? I'm running OS X and would love a program like that, just assumed it'd only run for PC. Can't help much with code though...

No, but I'd be interested in seeing the Python code. Or perhaps not - do I really need to learn yet-another-language?

This was LAST on my list. Only if I wanted to display some stats that others (Flattop) were not.

I can check for you on OSX (I think).

My intent is NOT to make a vote-bot. I think that FlatRich would frown on this. My intent was to incorporate a browser and a timer. Pop up and present the vote page. Hide and wait 60 minutes. repeat. Voting still manually done by a living human.

I'll keep FlyVote alive. I'm sure someone would want to try it. It is for Win/Linux/OSX.

Hi, sure some of you know but I thought I'd just post this as no-one has mentioned it.

AOL USERS:

You can actually vote twice an hour.

You can vote once in AOL browser and once in Internet Explorer.

It's been working for me and I hope it works for other AOL users.

(hope there aren't any Bonanza or Xena voters reading this)

FlyVote 1.0

Give this a try -

Windows:

Linux:
http://www.usbmicro.com/misc/linuxflyvote.zip

OSX (and earlier):
http://www.usbmicro.com/misc/macflyvote.zip

I just posted the program files as I last had them working. They need the once-over when I have time. Give them a try, provide feedback. I'll update them further when I have a chance (perhaps on the weekend).

I confirmed operation of the Windows and the OSX version for FlyVote 1.0. Still need to confirm the Linux version...

C'mon!

Since Flyvote was kind enough to post his beyond shiney software (think of it as a butler "Excuse me (sir, miss, madaam), you asked to be reminded") there's no excuse for not remembering to vote anymore!
Download, unpack, execute, VOTE!
Just be sure to reboot before you do that big sales pitch... (although if there are any Browncoats in the room you might get bonus points. )

Is AOL still giving out those 30-day trial disks? Maybe I could pick one up and increase my vote yield for a short period of time.

Also, anyone take a second to watch Star Trek's 20,000 video? I know that sometimes they have to make up a name for the fans of a show b/c they might not have one like "Browncoat" but he has written in the little show, "Congratulations Trekkers!" "Trekkers?" Doesn't everyone know they (we actually) are called Trekkies?

One suggestion. Can you hard code the selection of FireFly? It would be one less thing to do, plus it would prevent the enemy camps from making much use of it.

I think manipulating the richlabonte.net/tvvote/index.html page by forcing anything moves too close to making a "bot". I'd hate to have anyone cry foul and have FireFly lose points because of that. This way I can claim that it always takes two human clicks to cast a vote.

Trapper John, MD bumped West Wing off the top 40. Will monitor to see what sort of bump they get off the top 40... They have been run around 170-180 votes per day while on the nomination poll.

Since the top 40 list is now alphabetical, it ended up not shifting the ballot much; they took exactly the same slot on the page that West wing had ;-)

It looks as if the initial .zip file isn't available for download (usual meaning of a 404 error).
If you're sure you've downloaded it to your desktop (or some other favored spot (I like \My Documents\Downloads\Application Name)) (right click on the downloadable file and select "Save As") then perhaps you need to download/install winzip (to convert the downloaded .zip file to a .exe)
That doesn't appear to be the case (usually the system throws an "Unknown Filetype/Extension" error if it has a file that it can't use.

Perhaps FlyVote had to take it down (to make it even cooler!) for a while.

The file is there still. Perhaps there was a momentary Internet glitch giving you the "404".

The file is a zip file. You should download the file and then extract the zip file's content - a single file called "FlyVote.exe". There is no install process, everything runs from that single file. Find a place to keep that file (desktop is OK, other directories work, too.). Double click on the file to start FlyVote.

Vote on the page that is brought up in FlyVote, then hide the program by clicking the hide/hour button. It'll remind you to vote again in an hour.

Do we smash through the 1K mark? Impress the world with an all new record high (we'd have to beat 1,365 to do so)?

Nah. We come in lower than yesterday.

It is important to note that FlyVote (the program, not me) DOESN'T CAST THE VOTE. FlyVote brings up the voting page where you still need to click on the Firefly selection, and then on the "CLICK ONCE TO VOTE!" button. When you get to the FLAtRich web page that thanks you for your vote, then put FlyVote to sleep to be reminded in an hour.

FlyVote is a 1 hour reminder program that brings up the vote page as a convenience. It is not a vote-bot. Please keep clicking to vote!

From FLAtRich's google group:

Quote:

We are aware of a certain program circulating on a certain board that
may start the rumor mills a-turning again so before any of you worry
you should take a look at our revised Tips page by clicking the About
menu item at the bottom of the site frame or going directly to
http://richlabonte.net/tvvote/count.htm

We have changed the name of the section at the top of the Tips page to
Problems Voting - Yours and Ours and added a bunch of words about Our
Number One Problem (as opposed to Yours) here at TV_Vote. The whole
page is a long read, so you can just scroll down and read that new bit
if you wanna keep up.

And thank you to Flyvote for his shiny app! We don't use it or
officially endorse it, of course, but it's kewl to think we can
actually inspire software.

About timers - Like FlyVote - thought we didn't know about that, Brownshirts? Hun dan! We're honored to have software created all special just for our site! And in three shiny flavors too!

I'll bet you didn't know that _I_ knew that you knew.

Well.... I didn't.

My guess is that someone has already assumed that the program was unfair and complained to FLAtRich. Well now here is his word - the program is fair.

Thanks for the SHINY comment, FLAtRich!

I didn't know he knew but I knew he would know and wasn't worried if he knew because I knew he knew about other timer programs and had not only known about other timer programs and was known to mention these other programs as things to use if someone knew they had a hard time knowing when to vote.

I think I said that right.

In any case, well done FlyVote.
