This weekend through professional contacts at a trade show, I was able to spend an hour or so with someone who does licensing for Universal.

I brought up the movie project rather slyly, and this is what she said:

1. Definitely in the works.

2. First film meeting was last week.

3. Working title is "Serenity." ("That's the name of the ship," she said.) :-)

4. They are "very excited to be working with Joss Whedon."

Sounds like more good news. I can feel the anticipation really building now.

I wish I could have been a fly on the wall at that film meeting last week.

Then she said, "I wish FOX were making the movie."

Which I gather to mean, someone IS making the movie.

SAG would not like that. We wouldn't want to get Joss in trouble, do we? So if anyone gets hired, he'll just have to take the check from Universal for working in the Firefly Movie.

I'm really trying not to get to excited about this (Joss Whedon's luck of late has not been brilliant) but what does this mean? 'Definitely in the works', does this mean everythings been sorted out and pre-production is starting or is there still legal stuff to get though? Also why call it 'Serenity', I hope they come up with a new title.

I have absolutely no inside information to add on the whole question of whether or not the movie will get made. What I will say is that many, many movies are discussed, scripts are written, actors and directors are lined up, and pre-production even begins before they are cancelled. I am encouraged by what we hear, but I still remain a skeptic. Many movies get tied up in the internal politics of the studios, and the reasons why any film could be green-lighted or cancelled are murky.

A part of me is amazed that the movie idea has came this far. Not because it wouldn't make a good movie, but because of all the difficulties involved. On the day I sit in a darkened theatre and see Serenity flying across the screen you'll hear me renounce atheism with a joyous "hallelujah", because miracles can happen.

Which reminds me of the story that after the show was cancelled Alan Tudyk (I think) gave Joss the big red button used in "Out of Gas", telling him to hit it when his miracle arrives. Perhaps us browncoats should all attach big red buttons to the side of our computers...

According to the update by Saffy, "Serenity" is just the working title. I don't think a great many movies keep the working titles, or at least it's not unusual for the release title to be different.

No power in the 'verse can stop me.

You know there is a real opportunaty here for a clever programer to make a killing on a red "receiver" light that sits in the system tray on our computers... and a button side of the program which Joss could use to call us all "back", lighting those red lights and telling us that the movie is ready. :O)
