First, anyone that says Steel Magnolias, I will shoot you down. That said....
Beneath The Planet Of The Apes is my choice. Heston throwing the big switch on Earth was just cool, darkly speaking. Plus the whole flick is just wack.
How about others?

Well, I don't think they meant to depress anybody, but the ending of Pleasantville sure did have that effect on me. I mean--here's Tobey Maguire and Reese Witherspoon trapped in a 1950s sitcom. And because of their influence, the real world starts creeping in. And the sitcom mother (played by Joan Allen) cheats on her husband (william H. Macy) with the guy who runs the soda fountain (Jeff Daniels). At the end of the movie Joan Allen and William H. Macy are sitting on a park bench talking. Macy is crying and telling her that he loves her and forgives her and wants her back, etcetera. The camera cuts to her reaction, and she's all emotional as well, and just as I'm thinking "ah, redemption, they're going to get back together," the camera cuts again to what I think is going to be Macy, but he's gone! And sitting on the bench there is Daniels. They're both confused about how he got there, Macy is nowhere to be found, and the movie ends. Argh! What a horrible ending! I loved the movie up to that point, but I haven't seen it since, because of the lousy, lousy ending.

Gladiator- I know, I know, Maximus has his vengeance, but did he have to die too? I know it made perfect sense, and was right for the story, but that doesn't mean I have to like it.
Dr. Strangelove- After all the hilarity, the parody, the satire and the Peter Seller's genius, they all get blown up.
Man on the Moon- The travesty of Jim Carrey not even being nominated for an Oscar not withstanding, to know the uniqueness of Andy Kaufmann, and of his tragic demise...it hurt. Alot.

The end to DR. STRANGELOVE is one of the best endings ever because it manages to play a nuclear apocalypse for laughs. It's the ultimate black comedy. And the ending to PLEASANTVILLE I actually found uplifting. The fact that this formerly restrictive and literally black and white world is exploding with color and possibility is invigorating. And the end with Bill Macy and Joan Allen was great. "Do you know what's going to happen?" "I don't know. Do you?" "No. (starts laughing) I have no idea." And it's just a simple cut and reveal of Joan and Jeff in the same situation and him concurring as well "I havn't the faintest idea." I don't think that ruined the movie at all. Especially with Fiona Apple's cover of "Across the Universe" playing over the soundtrack.
You want a really depressing ending? How about HOUSE OF SAND AND FOG. The whole Armenian family dies, and Jen Connelly, after going through an incredibly traumatic experience, is then asked "Is this your house?" And the look on her face as she says "No." just breaks your heart. I read somewhere that a really good feel-bad movie is just an much as an emotional pallat cleanser as a feel-good flick, maybe even moreso. The whole movie was just a very dark tragedy. And I loved it.
Also, the end to THE AVIATOR was also one that could leave some people in a funk. After three hours of Howard Hughs overcoming insurmountable obstacles and fresh off of getting the Spruce Goose to actually fly, the movie end with him in a dirty bathroom, repeating "The way of the future" over and over again. It ends with him officially losing his mind.

City of Angels. It was a shallow remake of Wim Wenders "Wings of Desire" (or "Wings over Berlin" depending on whether you watch the dubbed version vice the original German release). But I don't fault it for its shallowness. 98% of the remake was a fun, entertaining date movie. But then ending was completely broken.
In Wim Wenders' original version, the angel gives up his angelhood (real word?) to live with the woman who has captured his heart. And they live happily ever after.
In the superstar-studded Hollywood remake, the angel renounces his angelhood the day before the woman he loves gets mowed down by a truck while she's out riding her bicycle. It so SUCKED! It was obvious that it was done just for the shock value. Not because it in any way made the story right.

Oh, and another one:
Remake of "The Planet of the Apes"
Last few minutes of the movie remake were more faithful to the original Pierre Boulle book. But it was VERY clumsily done. So jarring as to completely yank me out of the story. When I watch the remake now, I stop watching after they win the battle... just change the channel then and pretend that he stays with his new friends and makes a new life.

(In side comment about City of Angels, it did have the value of showing Nick Cage (I think the character's name is Seth?) some of the stuff Dennis Franz tells him: yeah there's a lotta good, but there's bad too, and you gotta make the good get you through the bad. And love is fleeting. So it DID work for the movie, to show Seth, hey, them's the beans of mortal love versus immortal love (amo Dei))
ON TOPIC,
I'd have to throw Closer into the list. While I love the movie cause it's an adult love story, EVERYONE pretty much ends up unhappy or lost (excepting maybe Portman's character).
However, since I prefer to see realism over idealism, I love the movie cause of that.
(Ironically, I try to live by ideal versus real standards of living....hmmmm)

Sorry for a slight threadjack here, but I have to ask; what do you think was in the box?
Select to view spoiler:
To me is was pretty clear it was the woman's head, because the psycho guy said he took 'her pretty head' as a souvenir, but almost everyone I talk to seems to think it was the unborn child. To me, while that would be more evil, it makes no sense. The killer didn't know that the officer didn't know his wife was pregnant, and would have had no way to prove it was in fact his child anyway, while his wife's head would be totally recognizable.
Either way, the box is evil and it's not a movie I think I could bring myself to watch again, but I've been wondering about this for awhile...

Hear, hear. I watched that film for a philosophy class. Eventually, I'll get around to reading the book.
My vote goes to The Rules Of Attraction. It's based on a Bret Easton Ellis novel (who writes pretty messed up novels to begin with). Everyone's in love with everyone else, and everyone ends up alone. The book's even worse than the movie; I was never able to finish it.

The end of Terminator 3 was a bit surprising even though it shouldn't be. I mean, if it doesn't end that way then the first two films never take place. Sitting in the theater I kept thinking, "okay, what lame ass plot twist will be thrown in so that the world will be saved?" Imagine my surpirse when the bombs started raining down.
On another note I can't believe how many of you didn't like the end of Seven. An ending where the bad guy wins by having the hero execute him. It doesn't get much better than that.

I don't know if I can call it a favourite but by sheer dint of how depressing the ending is, Requiem for a Dream. Basically, if you've ever wanted to end a relationship, put this on and then ask your unloved one after it for some time to think your life over. They'll agree, probably because they'll be rethinking their life too.
All the above have one downbeat ending. This one has four.

For me, the most manic-depressive movie endings, I can recall are:
‘The Talented Mr. Ripley’. Good movie, but he kept on killing.
‘Star Wars: Return of the Sith’. No offence to those Star Wars fans out there (I’m one myself), but it brings me to tears (of laughter) whenever I hear Darth Vader scream ‘NOOOOOOO…’. That’s just sad.
All the ‘Nightmare on Elm Street’ movies because they always died in the end.
I know people will probably hate me for this but ‘Lord of the Rings: Return of the King’. If you’re going to adapt a 1500+ book into a movie (even if their is more to be said), end at the logical point of the movie, not the thirty something endings that followed.
‘The Village’ and ‘The Others’, because it was meant to be so clever, but I knew what was going to happen from the very start.
And don’t get me started on ‘Contact’.
On a positive note though, the best ending I’ve ever see was: ’It’s a Wonderful Life’. That got me teary.

For anyone who thinks their life is out of balance with too much happiness, and feels the need to set things back to an even keel, I would heartily recommend Pelle the Conqueror. Starts out bleak and takes a three hour descent through greater levels of despair as only the Swedes can do it. Watch for those few tidbits of hope to be brutally dashed.
Yes, the ending is depressing, too, though by the time you get there, the numbness may well have trumped any other feeling.

A Scanner Darkly's ending is kinda screwy... anticlimactic but will leave an impression with you from then on after seeing it.
Silent Hill had an oddly depressing ending to it.
Bob Roberts is my runner up... the ending was horrible (Not in a bad quality way) but it was also reasonable that it had to end that way.
and the one that takes the cake is...
"O".. the modern remake of Shakespeare's Othello... if there is one movie that I will never watch again it's this one. Seriously great performances all around for a "Teen" drama.

That’s hard to say, but if I were to pick one, I would have to go with The Grey Zone. You just don’t get a more depressing ending then that.

I catch fire quickly. The first part of me rises in dense smoke that mingles with the smoke of others. Then, there are the bones, which settle in ash. And these are swept up to be carried to the river. And last, bits of our dust simply float there, in air, around the working of the new group. These bits of dust are grey. We settle on their shoes and on their faces, and in their lungs. And they become so used to us, they don't cough and they don't brush us away. At this point, they're just moving, breathing and moving. Like any one else, still alive in that place. And this is how the work... continues.

Nothing is more unpredictable than the mob, nothing more obscure than public opinion, nothing more deceptive than the whole political system.

The Chronicles of Riddick - Kyra dying and Riddick in the horribly awkward position of commanding those who destroyed her.
LOTR Return of the King - Frodo and Gandalf having to leave Middle Earth and their close friends.
Serenity - Book and Wash gettng killed.
Ok, had I been serious for more than ...5 seconds, my list would have looked pretty much like yours.
The reaction of Merry and Pippen, especially tough. I have to assume that Sam always knew......
Wash AND Book? One was tough enough, but the two of them.... ouch.
People love a happy ending. So every episode, I will explain once again that I don't like people. And then Mal will shoot someone. Someone we like. And their puppy. - Joss

Those three were really tough for me, and especially Serenity with Wash and Book getting killed because it was completely unexpected. I had become so used to and spoiled by the light nature of the series and the happy endings with them blasting off to their next adventure.
I also forgot to mention that the minor role of the Purifier in Riddick really got to me, although that wasn't really at the end. The final moments when Riddick embraces Kyra for the last time were touching because it's probably only the second time he shows any deep emotions towards anyone else, the first time being his shock of Carolyn Frye dying while trying to save him in Pitch Black. I think he had come really far from his bad-ass without compassionate character to "rejoin the human race" as Frye put it.
Finally, the ending of ROTK was probably the deepest I've ever been affected by a depressing ending. After all they had been through together with the Fellowship breaking, they finally had to part ways, possibly never to see each other again. I was reading some of the backstory on Wikipedia, which describes the rest of all the character's lives and it says that Sam eventually journeyed to Frodo after his wife died, but I'm not sure how canon this is. The ending was a bit long drawn out I must say, but what really had it tough was how everyone returned from their adventures to reunite and have good time just like before, only to be split apart once again, this time for good.

Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry (Peter Fonda)
Vanishing Point (Barry Newman)
Both end the same way, but Vanishing Point is a bit more upbeat, since Kowalski managed to find the "crack in the fence", as the director put it, and escape from his personal deamons.

How many Jaynes does it take to change a light bulb?
Two. One to try to put it in and another to find a bigger hammer.
