In which:

The crew went to Beaumonde and meet Fanty and Mingo who gave them a job on the Rim moon of Lilac, the crew got smaller even still, Fly is about to leave as Serenity enters Muir's orbit, to join Pain's friend Reggie's crew and the shortage of people posting has brought up the question: Where has the life gone from this thread?

John smelled the muir air and looked about. The Muir air was an interesting mix of raw dog, dirty people and some other smell he couldn't place his finger on. Ahh Muir!

The Training House

Inara was teaching a class to some of Sheydra's young students, which left Sammy to her own devices.

She wandered the vast halls, wrapped in a warm woven shawl against the cold of the coming autumn. Sheydra's voice called to her and she turned, meeting the eye of the Companion with a smile.
"Madame Sheydra? How are you?"

Sheydra smiled gracefully, "Well enough. How are you fairing?"

Sammy shrugged, forehead creasing, "The pain is less every day, but... I don't remember anything. It's like living through a cloud, if I just look hard enough I'll be able to see the other side."

The beautiful Companion smiled tenderly, draped a gentle arm around the other woman's shoulders, "Perhaps this is your chance to reinvent yourself anew. I believe you're allowing what you've forgotten to prevent you from capturing new memories."

The Companion's cool lips touched Sammy's cheek with a tender kiss, "Life is for living, Samantha. You cannot hide here forever."

The bitter thought occurs to her but she holds it back, Inara's hiding here. Why can't I?

The plan had changed. Instead of meeting Reggie in orbit as planned the crew had agreed to meet him on the ground, which is where they were currently at.

"Remember people we got no time for R&R. We're only here to see Fly off." shouted the Captain from the cargo bay.

Turning to Fly, Mal said "You got everything mei mei?"

"Yeah I believe so sir." replied Fly as she hoisted one of her shoulder bags over her shoulder.

On the cargo bay floor sat about six large duffle bags. Most contained weapons, both belonging to Fly and Pain while the others contained clothes.

Mal simply stood by and watched as Guy, Jayne, and Zoe helped Fly take her things over to Reggie's freighter a short ways ahead.

"Family's gettin' too short." Mal said to himself.

Jayne intentionally bumped hard into Fly as he dropped two of her bags onto the cargo deck of Reggie's ship.

When she whirled on him, he blocked the swing with a half-snarl/half-grin, "You ain't comin' back anytime soon..."

Fly stopped and dropped her arm, meeting the eye of the big merc, knowing neither of them were going to say what they meant; that he wished she weren't leaving, and she wished she was staying, "Not as long as you're here."

"I'm keepin' your stash of mead." The merc countered, and they held each others gaze for a long moment before Jayne turned around and headed back onto Serenity.

Zoe just shook her head, "You come home soon."

Fly stood in the cargo bay doors and watched them go.

"Heya, Fly! We's gotsome flyeeen to do! You raedy?"

Reggie was standing there, a broad grin on his face and she felt her heart lift a little. "Yeah, Reg. Let's do this."

But as the cargo bay doors closed she looked back at Serenity, at the departing backs of her friends, of her family. She'd be back, as soon as the time was right. Right now, Reggie needed her. And she needed to be needed.

"They always go. They don't always come back." River whispered to no one in particular, her face tilted against the cool fiberglass of the crate she was lying on.

"Yeah, well, that's the way of things." Mal answered her as he pressed the button to close the airlock doors. "Wash? Get us in the air. We've got our own work to do."

"You got it sir. So where are we going this time? Can we go somewhere with a beach or maybe a duck pond?" came Wash's voice from the ship's comm.

"Wash you know where we're goin' and you know how I feel about ducks and sand. So the answer to your last two questions is no." came Mal's response.

Wash clicked off the comm and sighed "I never get to go anywhere fun."

The pilot fiddled with the buttons, dials, and controls in front of him and Serenity blasted off from the ground and headed off into the Black for Lilac.

Clicking on the comm Wash announced "We'll be landing at our destintation on Lilac in two days. Please keep all hands and feet inside the vehicle at all times. Today's inflight vid is titled 'The Grumpy Man in the Brownish Colored Coat'."

OH NO! Mal doesn't like ducks????? ;)

"Honey, you are just askin' for trouble." Zoe dropped a hand on her husbands shoulder, but her grin plainly said how she really felt.

"Well, I figure it finds us whether we ask for it or not. Might as well send it an invitation." Wash answered as the ship lifted through atmo.

In the Galley, Kaylee started dinner, trying not to think on those who were leaving, or how unhappy it made her. "Wolf? Hand me them sweet potatoes, would ya? I'll fix us up something hot and tasty and we'll all be able to get a good nights sleep tonight."

Apparently not.

Location: Inside the Records Room of a secret Alliance facility on Osiris. Time: 2 weeks ago.

The room was long and bare except for the walls lined with drawers all full of holo-records, a computer console, and a recorder. The man standing in the room was watching a recording of River Tam's escape from the facility.

"Stop. Backtrack. Stop." said the Operative to the computer, which complied instantly.

Dr. Mathias stormed into the room, followed by two security agents, and a very nervous intern.

"Excuse me! No one is allowed in the records room without my express permission." shouted an annoyed Mathias to the man.

"Forgive me. I prefer to see the event alone, without bias." replied the Operative.

"I need to see your clearance." asked Mathias as the two agents took places near the man.

"You have the right to insist." said the Operative as he walked over to the console near the wall and placed his hand on the screen.

A few short moments later the computer confirmed the man's identity and said in a female voice "Parliamentary override. Full access."

"Apologies. An Operative of the Parliament will of course have full cooperation." said Mathias. As he looked at the screen he continued "I'm not sure what...I see no listing of rank, or name."

"I have neither. Like this facility, I don't exist. "Let's talk about the Tams." replied the Operative as he faced the Doctor.

"I assume you've scanned the logs." said Mathias.

"River was your greatest success. A prodigy. A phenomenon. Until her brother walked in and took her from you." replied the Operative in a calm manner.

"It's not quite so simple." retorted the Doctor.

"I'm very aware of that." countered the Operative.

"He came in with full creds. He beat the ap-scan, the retinal...There was no way I could..." explained Mathias.

"No no. Of course. The boy spent his fortune developing the contacts to infiltrate this place." said the Operative.

"Gave up a brilliant future in medicine as well. Turned his back on his whole life. Madness." replied Mathias.

The Operative was taken aback by the Doctor's response and offered his own.

"Madness, no. Something a great deal more dangerous." The Operative walked foward to the still image in front of him and continued "Have you looked at this scan carefully? At his face?"

Mathias looked at the scan uncertainly as the Operative continued "It's love, in point of fact."

"Why are you here?" asked the Doctor a little peeved.

"I'm here because this situation is even less simple than you think. Dou you know what your sin is Doctor?" said the Operative, turning his attention to Mathias.

"I...I would be very careful about what you.." stammered Mathias.

"It's pride." said the Operative as he cut off the Doctor.

Mal doesn't like ducks? thats ..er...quackers

Location: Beaumonde.

"Yep....that went real well." Choo muttered, slowly using a metal pick to undo the handcuffs that attached him to the bed post.

Great...

After handing over the Serenity Dossier to The Syndicate, Choo had proceeded to get absoutly hammered, pissed and then grab a few from one of the hotels...cleaners...so to speak. Who then proceded to drug him and then rob him.

At least the b*tch hadn't taken any of his mercandise or documents, the trader/informant thought, so not a insider then. Besides his cards would have been frozen by now and he had plenty more accounts. Hell, at least she weren't The Bride of a Thousand Men. Would of have been in big trouble then.

"Everytime....every sodding time," Choo muttered, shaking his head. Reaching under the pillow he grabbed another pick from the small case.

Hopefully the others will be having more fun than he was...

IT HAS BEGUN!!! {/i]

John sat in the galley as Kaylee and Wolf made there meal. He never liked them as a couple. There were so many more desirable crew members but he couldn't do anything about it. Suddenly and image of Shepard Book flashed into his eyes an image that made him want to cry. An image that he couldn't change no matter what.

Continued from my last post.

The Operative walked over to the small control stand near the hologram and pressed a button. The hologram changed to one with the Doctor and Simon in the lab.

"Key members of Parliament have personally observered this subject. I was told their support.." said Dr. Mathias in the recording until the Operative switched the hologram back to the image or River.

"Key members of Parliament. Key. The minds behind every diplomatic, military and covert operation in the galaxy, and you put them in a room with a psyhic." said the Operative to Mathias.

"If there was some...classified information that she..well she never spoke of it. Idon't know what it is." replied a bumbling Mathias.

"Nor do I. And judging my her deteriorating mental state I'd say we're both better off. Secrets are not my concern. Keeping them is." replied the Operative.

"Whatever...secrets she might of accidently gleaned...it's probable she doesn't even know them. That they're buried beneath layers of pyschosis..." replied the nervous Doctor.

"You know in certain civilized cultures, when men failed as entirely as you have, they would throw themselves on their swords." replied the Operative as he moved to his briefcase and opened it.

A fed up Dr. Mathias said "Well unfortunately I forgot to bring a sword to.."

The Doctor's sentence was stopped short when the Operative pulled out a sword from his briefcase.

"I would put that down if I were you." replied Mathias.

The Operative faced the Doctor, his sword in his right hand, hilt facing Mathias and asked "Would you be killed in your sleep like an ailing pet?"

Mathias motioned for the security agents to move in on the Operative, but he was too quick for them. The first agent's throat was slashed before he could go for his gun and as the second had put a hand on his, the Operative stabbed him through the arm and through his chest. As the agent dies, he reflexively squeezes the trigger of his gun and shoots himself in the arm.

The Operative pulled his sword out of the man, whose body then fell silently to the floor. Mathias runs out of the room scared and almost trips on a dead agent's foot. He is almost halfway through the hallway when the Operative sidelines him to a wall and jabs the Doctor in the side with a bunched up fist, paralyzing the man.

The Operative then goes down on one knee, holding his sword out, hilt to the floor. Dr. Mathias looks at the sword in horror as his immobile body starts to lean forward.

Turning his attention to the frightened intern in near the hallway's enterance, the Operative says "Young miss, I'll need all the logs on behavioral modification triggers. We'll have to reach out to River Tam, and help her to come back to us. No matter how far out Simon has taken her, we can..."

The Operative is almost startled when Dr. Mathias drops onto the sword.

"This is a good death. There's no shame in this, in a man's death. A man who's donbe fine works. We're making a better world. All of them, better worlds." say the Operative as Mathias takes his last breaths.

As the Doctor finally dies, the Operative rolls the man over and removes his sword.

Turning his back to the intern and wiping of his sword with a cloth, the Operative says "Young miss I'll need you to go to work now. I think I may have a long way to travel."

The intern leaves, albeit a litte scared. The Operative then walks back towards the holographic image of River and says "Where are you hiding, little girl?"

*supah-bum, supah-bump, it's supah-BUMPAY!*

I've got to stop all this. The mock-honor, the killing, all of it. What was it I said, so long ago? Back when Jack was still alive? 'I am a blade of silver, I am a sickle of ice.' That's the sort of sh*t I'm talking about, that warrior sh*t I've been trying to go by since I got to you guys.

Jack wasn't the first person I've killed, although he was the only person I killed twice. Years ago, I murdered someone with nothing in my eyes or mind. That was when it all went downhill, I suppose. I won't bore you with the ins-and-outs of it, but the whole crazy-train really got started when I died for the first time (how many people get to say that, I wonder?). The voices aren't stopping, no matter what I do. Retreating does nothing, talking does nothing, even dying does nothing. If you're reading this, you'll know that I've already come and gone, like so much trash hitched up underneath your hull.

I guess what I'm getting at here (yeah, there's a point) is that we can run from everything but ourselves. Just look at the Shepherd, for Christ's sake. I know myself now, and that's what frightens me. If anyone finds this (and I think you will) , then it'll be a sort of clue to why I'm gone, although you'll be able to figure it out yourself.

I know myself now, and it horrifies me.

Yours forever,

~ Joseph ‘13’ D’Allaird, Rebel And Deviant

(P.S: Don't bother finding out what I'm really for. I'd want that to stay buried.)

(P.P.S: If you've bothered to read this far (that means you, Pain!) then make sure to tell Fly that I'm mostly sorry.)

"How will that make them any different from the rest of my crew."

"I'm not saying you shouldn't do it. Just sayin he's gone. But hey this goes the wrongway That's it."

"Yeah"

"Are you gonna need me planetside."

"Don't think so not your type of job. But it is hers"

Location: Ito's Bar & Lo Mein House - Persephone

Fruity Oaty Bars make a man out of a mouse! Fruity Oaty Bars make you bust out of your blouse! Eat them all the time! Let them blow your mi..

"I'm gettin' sick of that ruttin' commercial." replied the short, sticky old man behind the counter as he switched the channel on the vidscreen.

Yeah I know what you mean Ito. Every ruttin' time my daughter hears that commercial, she wants me to buy her some. It's freakin' ridiculous if'n you ask me." replied Pain. Finishing his beer he continued "Another glass of your house stout my good man."

"Comin' right up." replied Ito as he turned around and grabbed another bottle from the cooler.

"That daughter of yours' is somethin' special Pain. Is her mother around by any chance?" asked Ito as he handed Pain the bottle of beer.

After taking a swig Pain shook his head and said "I'm afraid not, but I do ihave a girl who I hope wouldn't mind takin' that position." Pulling out his wallet, he pulled out a picture of him and Ertia and handed it to Ito. Pain then continued "That's my baobei Ito. Not a day goes by that I don't think of her. Someday I'll be with her again."

Ito looked at the picture in his hand. It was taken in Serenity's cargo bay by the ships' mechanic. It showed Ertia with her arms around Pain's waist and his arm aroud her shoulder. Both of them were smiling at the camera.

"She's a nice girl Pain, pretty too. I wish you two the best." replied Ito as he handed Pain the picture back.

"Thanks Ito that means a lot." replied Pain, putting the picture back in his wallet and his wallet back into his pocket.

Pain took another swig of beer and turned his attention back to the dog race on the vidscreen. He was too busy watching the action to see a familiar businessman and his hired guns walk into the bar and saddle up to Pain. Ito noticed however and cowered behind the counter.

Pain was about to take a sip of his beer when he stopped midway. He saw the lack of the barkeep/owner in front of him and peered over the counter. Sure enough there was Ito hiding behind the counter.

"Awful smart thing 'e did, 'idin'." came Badger's voice from beside Pain.

"Badger whatever brings you here." said Pain sarcastically as Badger sat down next to him.

"Thought we might talk a lil' business Pain." replied a grinning Badger.

After taking another swig from his bottle, Pain said "Really? 'Cause I was thinkin' of aqauintin' your face with the bar."

"Are you threatenin' me Pain?" asked Badger somewhat angry.

Pain felt the barrel of a gun press against his back and chuckled.

"Silly Badger threats are for kids and amateurs." replied Pain still chuckling. Then Pain stopped chuckling and continued "I don't make threats, I make promises."

"I'm startin' to dislike your attitude Pain." replied a pissed off Badger.

"And I dislike you pesterin' me Badger. So why don't you and your goons leave." replied Pain, casually taking another sip of beer.

"You're startin' to get on me nerves PAin. I'm seriously thinkin' of lettin' me men shoot you 'ere an' now." came Badger's reply.

Pain could feel an additional gun barrel on his back and said while he quietly reached for something in his coat "I'm sure you are Badger, but if'n you do that you won't be leavin' this bar alive."

"An' just 'ow're you goin' to do that Pain? By magic?" asked Badger, his goons laughing at what their boss said.

Pain laughed too, then put his closed hand on the counter, and said "Nope no magic Badger, just your run-of-the-mill grenade."

Pain then removed his hand from the active grenade now sitting on the countertop.

"You're one crazy kuang je de 'un dan Pain. You know that?" replied a bug-eyed Badger as he looked at the grenade.

"We're all a little bit crazy Badger and if you're still here by the time the last bar on that grenade goes out, then we'll all be a bunch of dead, crazy hun dans." replied Pain still not looking at Badger.

To be continued....

Despite the fact that he could of gotten off at the first moon they arrived at after picking him up (Beaumont, Beaumonde, whatever it had been, he hadn't being paying attention really), Nico kept finding excuses to stay onboard the ship.

He spent most of his days helping the other performing whatever chores they had to do (cleaning, re/assembling weaponry, tinkering with the engine, cooking, darning clothes and so forth). Whenever his help wasn't required / wanted, he stuck to his cabin, mulling over where his life had taken him thus far, and if he really wanted to try and resume it.

Over time, he began to understand the different crew members a bit better and tried to amuse himself during the long hours of nothingness by imaging various situations they might end up in (no matter how unlikely) and the ways the crew would react.

OoC: so to sum up, Nico's been in the background since he joined and has a somewhat expanded skill-set, although he's not an expert at anything, just working his way towards being a jack-of-all-trades. I'll try to post more often from now on.

Continued from my last post.

A beep sounded and one of the bars on the grenades timer went out.

"Four bars left Badger. Better get goin'." replied Pain, finishing his beer.

Pain felt the barrels of the guns leave his back and heard the gunmen back away as the grenade beeped again.

"Three bars Badger. Best make peace with whatever deity you pray to." said Pain looking at the empty beer bottle.

"You 'aven't seen the last of me Pain! shouted Badger as he motioned for his men to leave. Badger and his men hastily made their way out of the establishment.

"That's somethin' we can both agree on Badger." replied Pain as he watched Badger and his men leave. Still looking at his empty beer bottle Pain said "Ito my good man, get me another beer."

Another beep sounded from the grenade and Pain just looked at it contently. A short moment later the last bar on the grenade went out and everyone including Ito waited for the explosion. That explosion never came and Ito slowly rose from his hiding spot.

"You realize you just made an enemy today Pain." replied Ito as he grabbed another bottle of beer and handed it to Pain.

"Yeah I know, but it was fun messin' with him." came Pain's response as he took a sip of beer and everyone returned to watching the game on the vidscreen.

Tucking the note into his jacket pocket, 13 let out a deep, human sigh. Leaving, coming, going...would he ever finally stay somewhere where he could make a place.

With a few mumbled 'whatevers' to the residents of Haven and a prim nod to the girl Dinah, 13 boarded the one-manner, a gift from Calisto. What a nice lady.

'Okay...just do it like Wolf toldja,' 13 thought. 'Go easy, try not to twitch the yoke.'

With a rumble and a triumphant grin, 13 lifted off of Haven, staring down at the planet. Haven? Not for him.

'Oh well,' he thought, Serenity's NavSat burned into his brain, 'At least I'll see Fly. That'll be nice, unless she shoots me again.'

"Whoa did you see that?" replied Wash as Serenity bucked again.

"Was that the primary buffer panel?" asked Mal, a little angry that a piece of his dear ship just flew off.

"Looks like." replied Wash as he handled Serenity's controls.

"I thought Kaylee checked our entry couplings! I have a very clear memory of it!" shouted Mal.

"Yeah well if she doesn't give us some extra flow from the engine room to offfset the burnthrough, this landing is gonna get a little interesting." replied Wash as he fought the controls.

Mal turned to Wash and asked "Define "interesting"."

"Oh God, oh God, we're all gonna die?" replied Wash in a calm manner.

Mal walked over to the comm and opened the shipwide channel.

"This is the Captain speakin'. Due to a little problem with our enrty sequence, we may experience slight turbulence and then explode." said Mal into the comm.

As Mal prepared to leave the bridge he said to Wash "Can you shave the vector?"

"I'm doing it, it's not enough." replied Wash. HE then hit the comm and said "Kaylee!"

"Well just get us on the ground." replied a frustrated Mal as he leaves the bridge.

"That part'll happen, pretty definitely." replied Wash.

Jayne climbed out of his bunk, carrying enough weapons to outfit a small army. Seeing Mal, Jayne said "We're gonna explode? I don't wanna explode."

"Jayne, how many weapons you plan on bringin'? You only got the two arms." asked Mal as he looked at Jayne.

"I just get excitable as to choice, like to have my options open." came Jayne's reply.

"I don't plan on any shootin' takin' place durin' this job." replied Mal.

"Well what you plan on and what goes down, ain't ever exactly been similiar." shot Jayne.

Mal eyed the grenades that Jayne was carrying and said "No grenades."

Jayne groaned and Mal repeated "No grenades."

Zoe enters the front hall just as Mal makes his way for the engine room.

"Are we crashin' again?" asked Zoe.

"Talk to your husband. Is the mule prepped?" replied Mal.

"Good to go sir. Just loadin' her up." replied Zoe.

As Mal makes his way to Kaylee's domain, Zoe spots Jayne.

"Are those grenades?" Zoe asks Jayne.

"Cap'n don't want 'em." replied Jayne in typical Jayne fashion.

"Jayne we're robbin' the place. We're not occupyin' it." replied Zoe, who headed for the bridge.

"...lee? What in the sphincter of hell..." The captain's voice trailed off as I walked past the engine room, making my way into the cargo bay, leaning against the catwalk railing.

Well. If not at all smooth, we'd certainly hit the ground at one point.

"Have to go for awhile." The timid yet forward tone of voice only River could manage creeped up from roughly three feet to my left. Looking for her, I let out a high 'GAH!' when I noticed her spread out on the catwalk.

"Isn't that...uncomfortable?" I asked. "There are beds..."

She shook her head. "Prisons. Strap you down, cut you inside."

I winced at that. I'd gotten the story about her in little tidbits from the crew, and after the slow rage I felt so much...pity? Is that the right word?

"Never mind that," I said. Fantastic advice, Mr. Niccolo. "Why are you up here alone?" And an even more fantastic question.

She smiled. "Waiting. Thirty and twenty, then you'll see."

"Of course," I said, leaning against the rail in silence.

Roughly a minute later, I heard the clink of shoes on the grated catwalk.

"River?" Simon, soothing to his sister, yet still infuriating to me.

"I know," she said, not moving from her position. "I'm going for a ride."

John climbed slowly into Inara's shuttle he didn't know why he had come here he just wanted. He knew when his vision about Book happened he'd be near her. Book was a strange man, a shepard even after his dark past. They had met before a secret neither of them would tell. Book came out of it with a friend. Book had set John on a path to rightiousness. Did John do the same for Book? He felt a bump as the ship touched down.

He walked into the Cargo bay. "Do you understand your part in all this" He heard the captain say" "Do you" A monumental event was about to occur it started here. The Captian, River they would be major players. Would John? Should he stick around for the pain he felt coming. Yes for Kaylee, and for The rest of the crew they will need a shoulder.

"Wait, she's going with you!?" I shouted at Reynolds as he climbed aboard the hover mule with an irritated look on his face.

"How many people do I have to explain myself to? She's got skills rest of us don't, Oath, that might come in handy if we get into a situation."

Seething for a few moments, I spoke up just as Mal threw the hover mule into drive with a lurching hum.

"I'll accompany you, then."

"What?" Jayne grunted. "We ain't got a need fer a Core-born sissy!"

Reynolds shot Jayne a look, and turned towards me. "Jayne ain't wrong. 'Sides, mule won't run with five."

"Uh, Cap?" the engineer asked timidly. "Actually, it'll run just as easy with five as it will with four. Jack's ol' mule wouldn't've, but this shiny new one..."

Mal gritted his teeth, trying to ignore my expectant glare.

"Fine," he growled. "Get your ass on, and hold tight."

The hum smoothing out, we left the cargo bay in the care of smiling Kaylee, frowning Simon, and the others, as Mal grumbled, "Why do you wanna go with us anyway?"

Not being able to answer that question, I simply tried to enjoy the ride as much as I could.

"So, what's the plan, Captain?" I asked. "If I'm going to help, I should have a...worker's insight."

"There's a little bank in town," he explained, "That holds the local defense contractor's pay. We go in there, and we take it with as little fuss as possible."

"That's why we're goin' in on a Sunday," Zoe added. "Won't be any crowds."

I nodded, a little annoyed that they'd be so ready to bring River into an operation like this, but I suppose they'd been through much worse on their adventures. The gunfights, the dogfights, and that business I'd heard about on Londinium...Yes, they'd been through worse than this.

Parking in front of what must have been the bank, Jayne stood up conspicuously, unzipping his jacket to display a repeater.

"Shiny. Let's be bad guys."

We crashed into the bank, Zoe first, Mal barking orders to the patrons. With efficent movements, Zoe blew out the security cam while Jayne performed what looked like a Tombstone on a security officer. I shucked my mouseguns out of my sleeve holsters, sweeping the area cautiously.

Last came River, stepping carefully into the bank. I chuckled as I saw she was barefoot, and came this close to chiding her about it. Why, she might step on a gun or broken glass, or something.

She seemed to consider the place for a moment, before pointing at a rough-bearded, curly haired man. Zoe put her gun to the side of his head, and her vice was the only sound in the building.

"Know what the definition of a hero is?" she asked, the gun still pointed at his head. "Someone who gets other people killed."

The man threw a gun, and resumed the stay-on-the-ground position.

"Big happy family?" Mal said dryly.

BUMPILICIOUS!!!

Mal moved toward the Trade Agent and hauled him over to the wall safe, as Zoe and Jayne followed.

The Trade Agent said "This is just a crop moon, don't think you'll find what you..."

Mal cut the man off and said "Bi zui rong wo men fa cai! (Shut up and make us wealthy!)"

The old man moved towards the wall safe and punched in its combination. Zoe and Jayne stood behind Mal as the old man opens the safe and gets out of the way.

"At last we can retire and give up this life of crime." replied Zoe sarcastically, as she saw the small amount of bills and scattered coins in the safe.

Mal gives her his "Don't you have faith in me" look and reaches into the safe. He pulls on the hidden lever at the top and a passage way opens up near Jayne.

"Hey!" shouted Jayne as he was caught off guard by the sound of a part of the floor sliding away.

"Y'all are Browncoats eh? Fought for independence? Petty thievin' ain't exactly soldier's work." replied the Trade Agent.

War's long done old man. WE're all just folk now." came Mal's reply. He then shouted into the passageway to the vault "Listen up! We're comin' down to empty that vault!"

"You have to give me your authorization password!" shouted the guard from below.

Jayne sneered and fired off a burst from his submachine gun down the stairs.

"Okay!" shouted the guard as the gunfire stopped.

Mal then motioned for Zoe to follow him into the vault, as Jayne stood guard.

Oath you didn't type the "definition of a hero line" That's my favorite.

Meanwhile back at the ranch I mean ship

John stood on top of the cargo bay walkway. He laughed as he saw the doctor constantly coming back and looking out in hopes of catching his sister.

"She'll be back when she gets back" he called after look 50 he'd been counting.

"Next your going to tell me these jobs are safe." John began to climb down the stairs and stopped midway. "I won't lie to ya. I've been on many a job with this crew, and many on my own. I've been shot at 679 times 14 times a bullet hit. I've been stabbed beaten broken just about every bone in my body and even been totured for hours at th ehand of an elderly Russian man. But, I made it through. River's tough she'll survive. Besides job like this, there is absolutely nothin to..."

John stopped talking suddenly and grabbed his head. He let out a moan, intense pain eminating from his head. He fell down the stairs and began convolsing. Simon rushed toward him and tried to calm him. "John what's wrong"

"So angry. Danger. Rea..." He lost contiousness before he could finish his sentence

Somewhere outside the Trading Station a little boy turned to his mother and said "That sounded like a repeater."

"It did sumwat sound like gun blast. Perhaps you ought to run and tell a lawman." replied the kid's mother.

As she turned back around a Reaver attacked her. Meanwhile back inside the Trade Station, River had a violent vision and fell to the ground. Jayne saw her and made his way towards her.

"What is it?" asked Jayne as he held both of her shoulders.

River turned her wide eyed gaze to Jayne and said "Reavers."

"The leg is good and it'll bleed plenty." said Mal to the guard inside the vault room as Zoe loaded up the loot.

"I was thinking more of a graze." replied the guard.

"You don't want to look like you just gave up." countered Mal.

Just then Jayne came running in.

"Mal!" shouted Jayne.

"Every heist he's gotta be yellin' my name." muttered Mal. Mal turned to Jayne and asked "What is it?"

"Reavers. The girl's pitchin' a fit about them. They're here or there comin'." replied a frightened Jayne.

Mal turned back to the guard and said "Does that vault lock from the inside?"

"Yes." replied the guard.

Reavers. I'd never seen any in my years of travel, so I'd convinced myself they were nothing but stories and exaggeration, even with the crew’s obvious experience with the monsters. Horrified screams from outside the bank and shrieks of pure fury convinced me that the truth was much worse than the fiction.

“You see ‘em? Anybody see ‘em?” Jayne shouted with anxious fear, his head darting around.

About thirty yards from us, a trio of torn, snarling ‘men’, clad in makeshift armor saw us and began running towards us with jagged weapons raised. I put a bullet in one’s head, stunned to see it continue for several steps before collapsing. The other two Zoe and Jayne brought down while Mal ushered River onto the hover-mule.

Death was abound, Reaver’s flying from their ominous, black ships, tearing into the town like a summer blaze. Blood spilled into the street, as man, woman, and child were all killed alike. I shot down four more before Zoe shouted for me as she started the mule up. I hopped on, keeping my guns drawn.

The man Zoe had educated in the bank ran towards us, screaming, “Take me with you! I can’t stay here, please!”

“You’re too many!” Mal shouted as the man struggled to get onto the mule. With a shove, Mal re-introduced the man to the dirt, where Reavers hungrily snatched him up. Taking careful aim, Mal shot him in the chest, causing the Reavers to drop the fresh corpse with disinterest.

The hover mule raced forward, past a building with a yellow awning, smashing into some cages that had chickens in them. A few short moments later a group of Reavers followed in a menacing skiff.

"Faster! Faster would be better!" shouted Mal to Zoe just as the Reaver skiff tapped the hover mule. The skiff was about to ram them again when Jayne shot at it, causing it to back off a ways.

"How come they ain't shootin' us outta the sky?" yelled Jayne as sporadic gunfire erupted from the skiff.

"They want us alive for the up close kill." shouted Mal as both he and Jayne fired at the skiff again.

"They want us alive when they eat us." said River, from her scrunched down position.

OOC: This is going to be a mite long, with a little variation to the cargo bay scene. (Oath against Mal in this Big Damn Movie, it seems.)

This is it, I thought, as the skiff bore down on us, harpoons and jagged projectiles flying.

I fired bullet after bullet, sliding back into my time as a gunslinger-for-hire on the Rim. A time of muzzle fire and blood-smelling smoke. I’d lived a life of

They’ll take her, I realized with dawning anger. They aren’t just bogeymen; they’re as real as she is. Steeling myself, I reloaded, shot, ignoring the steel stake that rammed into my left shoulder, pushing the pain into the attic of my mind.

“Where are my clips!?” Jayne shouted, replied by an urgent reminder from Captain Reynolds. Reaching for the rear hatch, Jayne’s hand came close to removal from an over-sized shuriken.

In what seemed to be a split-second later, a harpoon had pierced through the mercenary’s leg, a hungry rope leading back to the Reavers. Gripping the bumper of the mule, Jayne shouted with fear as Mal tried to get a steady shot. I almost laughed at his remark, until the Captain severed the rope with a bullet. I still chuckled a bit.

What’s the point? I thought, numb blood running freely from my shoulder, dropping my left gun. They’ll run us down, pick us apart like insects. Only thing you can do is keep River safe for as long as you can.

Serenity, swooping from the skies, a rickety deathtrap angel. With a thought of ‘Deus ex machina,’ the ship swept us from the ground, (resulting in Mal flying from the mule to land with safety) leaving the Reaver’s dark skiff to crash into the underside of the cargo bay entry-way. My head collided solidly with a piece of sharp metal, and dark blood glazed my eye.

Ignoring the thundering pain of both that and my shoulder, I rose shakily to my feet, glad to be rid of that hellblasted mule. My right-gun was still in my hand, still loaded, still ready to kill as I fixed my sights on Mal, striding towards him with anger misting my mind.

“Are you okay?” a stairway-perched Kaylee asked Simon, who’d thankfully opened the cargo bay doors before we’d hit.

“Is he okay?” Mal asked incredulously, a shocked look on his face.

A dark, soul-rattling scream came from the wreckage of the skiff, which had somehow found its way onboard. A black-clad Reaver, face torn beyond humanity, whirled a blade high above its head.

Instinctively, Mal, Zoe, Jayne, and myself poured bullets into the monster, who maintained the ferocious stance for several moments before collapsing, blood dyeing the bay red. Not the first time that Reavers had died here, so I’d heard. Hopefully, it would be the last time.

I ceased the barking orders of the captain with a suckerpunch to Mal’s jaw with my good arm, sending him rocketing to the floor. Alright, maybe not rocketing. He did fall down, though, which sated my anger some.

“How dare you take her into that?” I hissed, trying to inconspicuously soothe my sore knuckles. “How dare you?”

The sight of Mal’s burning eyes did make me back down some, but I maintained my eyes on the slightly taller and heavier man.

“Seems to me that you ain’t in a position of command, passenger,” he hissed. “You done little on this boat but keep quiet and be over-eager,” he sneered, adding, “That is, to most of us ‘cept River.”

I sputtered for a moment, trying to conjure up an explanation.

“You knew she was going into a dangerous situation!” I shouted as the crew watched, remaining silent.

“I ain’t a gorram prophet! She shoulda been safe as houses, not for the Reavers!” His eyes narrowed. “What I’m worried ‘bout is your interest in her. I’ve asked, and now I’m gonna be told: what’s your story?”

Bears just lost the Super Bowl I'm depressed and who would play John I don't know

"Stop fighting" John said his voice commanding echoing in the expanse of the cargo bay. He walked with an air of confadence anyone who wasn't there could never have known he'd been having a seizure just minutes ago. "There's no purpose just anger. Mal had every right to take River on the job. Simon you have every right to be angry at him. Oath you seemed overly concerned with someone that as far as I know is none of your gorram business but that's for another time. Many of us just had a near deah experiance I understand that but right now what's important is that no one died. If you all wanna bitch at each other do it another time cause this empath has a headache the size of earth that was and is heavily armed."

"We're leaving" Simon said from a corner after John had finished yelling. "Me and River we're gone"

"Fine but I got a hurt crew and until you leave the boat you're still my medic." Mal walked from the room head held high. John looked over and wondered how many locked doors it would take for him to let it droop.

I didn't even know the Super Bowl was on yesterday. As for who would play Pain, I have no clue, cause there aren't that many actors who're 6' 8".

Location: Cargo Bay

Before Mal and Zoe left the cargo bay for the Front Hall, Mal turned and said "Kaylee I want you to scavenge through this scrap for anythin' that might be usable. Jayne I want you, Guy, and Nico to clean up this mess and toss everythin' into the lower hold to space. Dong ma? Everyone else can do whatever."

There was no talking, just a couple of nods and Zoe and Mal left for the Front Hall.

Location: Front Hall

"No I think things'll glide a deal smoother for us without River and Simon onboard, but how long do you think they'll last?" asked Zoe as she and Mal entered the Front Hall.

"Doc made his call. They's as babes in a basket when we took them in. We sheltered 'em plenty. Man has to cut loose, learn to stand on his own." replied Mal as he made his way towards his bunk.

"Like that man in town?" asked Zoe.

"I had to shoot him. What the Reavers woulda done to him before they killed him.." replied Mal, stopping in front of his bunk's hatch.

"I know. That was a piece a' mercy. But before that, him beggin' us to bring him along.." replied Zoe, a hint of sadness in her tone.

We couldn't take the weight. Woulda slowed us down." replied Mal.

"You know that for certain?" asked Zoe.

Mal turned to face Zoe and said "Mule won't run with six. I shoulda dumped the girl? Oath? You? Or Jayne?" Mal considered the last part and sighed "Oh Jayne."

"Coulda tossed the payload." replied Zoe.

"Toss the payload?" Mal asked, his tone rising a bit before continuing "In case you haven't noticed, I have parts fallin' off my ship, I have a crew that hasn't been paid, and oh yeah a powerful need to eat sometime next month!"

Wash chose that time to exit the bridge.

"Sir, I don't disagree on any particular point. It's just...in the time of war, we woulda never left a man stranded." replied Zoe.

"Maybe that's why we lost." came Mal's response just as he opened his bunk's hatch.

Wash and Zoe watched as the Captain entered his room and closed the hatch behind him. Wash then walked over to his wife and wrapped his arms around her waist. Zoe smiled and nestled him.

Location: Cargo Bay

Time has passed and the only ones in the cargo bay are Jayne, Guy, Nico, and Kaylee. However unbeknownst to them, River is laying on the catwalk and listening in to the conversation below.

As Jayne drags the plastic wrapped body of the Reaver over to the lower hold, he says out loud "I do not get it. How's a guy get so wrong?"

Jayne kicks the body into the hold, walks over to a piece of wreckage, and continues "Ain't logical. Cuttin' on his own face, rapin' and murderin' I mean. I'll kill a man in a fair fight or if I think he's gonna start a fair fight, or if he bothers me, or if there's a woman, or I'm gettin' paid. Mostly only when I'm gettin' paid. But these Reavers...last ten years they just show up like the bogeyman from stories. Eatin' people alive? Where does that get fun?"

Jayne dumps the piece of wreckage into the hold as Kaylee fiddles with what looks to be a catalyzer.

"Shepherd Book said they was men that reached the edge of space, saw a vasty nothingness and just went bibbledy over it." replied Kaylee as she gave the part a good once over.

"Hell, I've been to the edge. Just looked like more space." replied Jayne as he kicked a part into the hold. He grimaced after he did so.

"I don't know. People get awful lonely in the Black. Like to get addlepated ourselves, we stay on this boat much longer. Captain'll drive us all off one by one." replied a sad Kaylee as she put down the part.

"Yer just in a whinge cuz that prissy doc is finally disembarkin'. Me I says good riddance. He never belonged here, and his sister's no saner then one of 'em Reavers." replied Jayne.

Kaylee shot Jayne a look and said "That ain't even so! River's a dear friend and a boon to this crew! You just don't like

"Well, short story long, I'll be rendesvouzing with you guys there, if possible." He hesitates, and his peculiar grin spreads wider. "Which is probable. That I will be there, that is." His eyes brightening, he adds: "Oh, and could you tell Fly to wave me when she gets a chance? I'm sure she's swamped on Serenity, but I'd like to...hear...from her." His grin falters for a moment, then returns brighter than ever.

"13 out. See y'all soon, my freaky styleys!"

Switching the Cortex screen off with a pleased sigh, 13 takes the sorrowy, angst-ridden note from his jacket pocket, reading it over four times. With a good-humored 'tut' he neatly rips it into four strips, then promptly eats them.

Keeping one hand firmly on the ship's yoke while the other is plunged into a charging station for a Gayme Buoy, electricity flowing into 13.

Leaving? How could they leave? What would they do? Where would they go? Beaumonde was far from the best of planets to conceal a pair of highly wanted fugitives, and it wasn't as if River was Miss Inconspicuous!

Leaving? What the hell was wrong with Simon? Didn't he know that the sky was the safest place to hide? Of all the people in the 'verse, I would know. I should tell them.

But I can't. Why not, you ask? Well, my dearest, you might have noticed in this sprawl of journal scrawlings that I'm in a very awkward situation. My daughter (probably, there's a chance she isn't. I'm not taking that chance, anyway. She's my blood, as far as I'm concerned.) cannot ever know that I'm her father.

But then again, why couldn't she? I think of everyone on the ship, she would handle it the best. Despite the family aura I'm getting from Serenity, she still has noone but that thrice-damned Simon, who plugs her with meds constantly. If she had a father, wouldn't that soothe?

Alright, probably wouldn't work out too well, although it would stop the captain's ceaseless questioning. He probably thinks I'm some sort of Alliance agent, a member of the 'secret police.' 'O f course, Mr. Reynolds, that's exactly what I am. Although that means I could've killed all of you and taken her whenever I wished.'

Idiot.

Wash left the bridge just as Wolf took over. He walked through the galley and stopped. It wasn't the same after those who left. He looked over to the corner where the coffee table was. Normally that's where Pain and Ertia could be found making out when they weren't in his bunk. They weren't there of course and hadn't been for quite some time.

"Hey Wash what's with the long face?" asked Guy who was sitting at the table, cleaning a gun.

"Oh it's uh nothing. I was just looking for people to play some hoopball." replied Wash.

"Hell count me in. A game of hoopball sounds better than just sittin' and mopin' about." replied Guy.

Guy finished cleaning his gun and put it away. Then he and Wash went looking for people to play some hoopball.

"Kaylee, you know I suck at hoopball." John protested.

That's quite all right Wolf.

In the Cargo Bay

A game of hoopball was underway. The teams were Wash, Guy, Wolf and Kaylee, against John, Zoe, Nico and Jayne. There wasn't many people watching the game since most of them were gone, but Oath and Mal made an effort to watch the game.

Jayne dodged a block by Guy and passed the ball to Zoe. Zoe maneuvered past Wash as he tried to block her.

"One to nothin'! Y'all ain't givin' up so easy are you?" said Zoe to her husband's team as she scored a point.

"Surrender? Now? I think you got a couple of screws loose my dear." replied Wash as he intercepted a pass from John.

Wash moved quick on his feet and threw the ball to Guy. Guy dodged Jayne and passed the ball to Kaylee, who made a basket after dodging John's attempt to block her.

She turned to John and said, smiling "Come on John is that the best ya got?"

Nico, Guy, and everyone else for that matter. This sure would go quicker if you people were here.

Irrelevant post ahead.

"This is what you do for fun?" I asked Mal, somewhat incredulously. He fixed a burning look at me, and I could already tell he was close to shouting. Something had ticked him off, but then again, he seemed to be ticked off a lot with me around.

"What? Like you got somethin' better?" he said, and his eyes returned to the game, and he cheered as the mysterious Nico made an easy shot.

"There's chess," I said, "or checkers. Riddling, speed, War, Super War..."

"What's Super War?" Mal asked with interest.

" 'It's a lot like War, except you slam the cards down a lot harder,' " I said with a grin, remembering that line from the immortal A. Lee Martinez.

Mal grunted, and I exhaled. I'd never been one for physical sports; cards and strategy were more my thing.

"I told you Kaylee I suck at hoopball" replied John just as Guy got smacked in the head with the ball.

"Gorrammit Jayne what the hell!!" yelled Guy as he rubbed his head.

Jayne grinned and said "Sorry Guy, guess I jus' didn't see ya there."

Guy glared at Jayne and replied "Like hell you did!"

"Ya gonna do somethin' 'bout it lil' man?" taunted Jayne.

"You bet your pigu I will!" yelled Guy just as he lunged at Jayne.

The two of them were about to go at it when Mal yelled "That's enough! Jayne apologize to Guy for hittin' him in the head with the ball right now, or you're on septic vac duty for a year!"

Jayne sneered and muttered "Fine." Turning to Guy, he said "Sorry for hittin' ya in the head with the ball, Guy. It ain't my fault ya got a big head."

Guy bunched up his fists and then went after Jayne.

"I still think there are better people for you." John said as he was trying to get the ball from Kaylee later.

"And I still don't care." Kaylle said attempting to move past him. John then stole the ball right out of her hands and threw it straight through the hoop. Kaylee stood there shocked. "I suck, right"

"Sometimes I get lucky. But then somethimes I think I got lucky but I really didn't because there's and elegible doctor whose completely infatuated with me who my childhood friend happens to think is really cool. "

Sorry, i'm back. Gald to see your all still having fun. And now i wanna play hoopball

"Wow. Thats quite a story," Choo said, cursing that 2.30 in the morning feeling.

"Were getting off as soon as we hit the dir- the ground." Simon stated from the other end of the wave. With the others plaing Hoopball he could easily access the Cortex without anyone knowing " I Was just wondering if you knew any place we could stay? Seeing that were well..."

"Yeah. i know," Choo replied, double checking the wave was still secue from prying eyes. The Syndicate's tech was top of the range, with stuff not even the goverment could crack. "Gonna be hard, but i do know a few safe ships that are always looking for an extra pair of hands. Out a good word in if you want. But..its gonna cost ya."

"How much??" Simon enquired nervously

Choo gave a wickid grin: "Your dorm. Tis the only one with sound proofing from what i've heard..."

"Ah," Simon said slowly, thoughts mulling over "I didn't know that..."

Meanwhile in the Cargo Bay

The game was still going on with Wash's team trailing by four. Guy and Jayne had gotten over their little spat and were playing more competively than ever. Zoe was having a fun time playing keep away from Wash with the ball and Kaylee was just having fun.

"Foul!" shouted Guy as John knocked him onto the ground.

Wash hollered back to Guy "There aren't any fouls in hoopball Guy, unless you count Jayne's body odor."

"Hey I told ya already that's a manly smell, little man!" griped Jayne as he took the ball from Zoe.

"Yeah it's manly only to you Jayne. To the rest of us it's revolting." quipped Wash who intercepted Jayne's pass and scored another point for his team.

Finally after a long flight the Ship touched down on Beaumonde. Even with the game of hoopball tension still filled the air. The captain had hurried off the ship. John knowing how these change offs could go quietly accopaanied him. Kaylee caught up after a short while and made her protests to the captain. John had expected them. When they made it to the watering hole where the trade offtook placed Kaylee stormed past him. What'd he say to her now John thought as he followed her. "Kaylee!" he shouted. "Wait up."

"What's eating you." he asked.

"I'm just sick of people leavin'," she replied holdin back tears.

"You had no particular attachment with him anymore. Why is this hitting you so hard?"

"It's nothin"

"Cause last time I checked you and Wolf...you still love him."

"No"

"Darlin I'm an impath lyin ain't gonna do much."

"Okay maybe I do"

"That's not fair to Wolf"

"I know"

When Simon entered the Maidenhead he saw lots of people laying on the floor. Some of them were breathing and some weren't. In the midst of the apparent chaos were Mal and River. Mal was near the weapon repository and River was standing a little ways from the stairs, both had guns pointed at each other.

Looking at his sister while at Mal's side, Simon called down "Eta kooram nah smech."

With that, River fell limp to the floor asleep, dropping the gun to the floor. Mal then rushed down the stairs to the fallen River and scooped her up.

Peering at Jayne who was on the ground, Mal said "Jayne you all right?"

"Gorram twerp grabbed my man parts and gave them an awful squeezin' Mal." groaned Jayne as he got up, clutching his crotch.

"So you're ok then?" asked Mal.

Jayne sneered at Mal and said "We leavin'?"

"Yeah." replied Mal. Looking up at the stairway Mal said to Zoe and Wash "Let's get outta here 'fore anyone calls the local authorities."

"Yes sir." replied Zoe.

Wash looked at the scene below and said "A nice romantic meal at a seedy bar and a show. It doesn't get much better than that. Right hon?"

Zoe gave Wash a punch in the arm, which caused Wash to winch.

"Ow what was that for?" asked Wash as everyone headed out of the Maidnhead.

"Nothin' dear, just a little love tap." replied Zoe, smiling.

"That was a love tap? It felt more like a love punch to me." quipped Wash, rubbing the spot on his arm where his wife punched him.

Welcome back, dear readers (or insane people just trying to put thoughts on paper to make sense of things).

I'm getting more...fringed? Is that a word for it? No matter, it'll do. I'm more fringed now than I ever have been, since the Maidenhead 'incident.'

That's how Simon refers to it. The 'incident.' Yes, just an 'incident.' Nothing serious, other than she easily decimated an entire bar of mostly criminals. Never mind that she most likely killed people in there.

Anyway, I'm thinking of letting somebody know my 'secret.' It's the only way to relieve suspicion, and I suspect that Mal is dangerously close to the point where he'll simply shoot me if I express any more 'interest' in River. The only problem is that noone would believe me, and they would be absolutely expected to not believe me. After all, what are the odds that my long-lost daughter from a passionate affair years ago would unexpectedly turn up on the very same boat that I would hitch on?

I've been reading more lately, in an attempt to keep the crew less volatile with my very presence. Reading over the Dark Tower. You see, in those books, there is a force at work called 'ka.' It is essentially the hand of destiny, and it rules all. All that happens is affected by ka, and like God, ka works in mysterious ways. I've never been a spiritual man, but the possibility of ka controlling my life, and River's, is terrifying, because ka is never forgiving.

Ka, I need a drink. More later.

Since when had he felt the future it didn't make any sense. He knew Book's role he knew Inara's but what role would he play what part in the tragedy that was coming would he have. John was scared for himself and for the whole crew. He stood in the galley as Simon talked and arguement ensued but he wasn't focused. He felt River fear her confusion and he could hear one word ringing in his head. "Miranda"

"Do we know if anyone was killed?" asked Zoe.

"It's likely. I know she meant to kill me 'fore the Doc put her to sleep." replied Mal. Hr turned to Simon "Which how exactly does that work anyhow?"

"Safeword." A beat passed and Simon continued "The people who helped me break River out, they had intel that River and the other subjects were being embedded with behavioral conditioning. They taught me a safeword, incase...something happened."

"Not sure I get it." replied Kaylee.

Simon took it upon himself to clarify what he meant "A phrase that's encoded in her brain, that makes her fall asleep. If I speak the words, "Eta.."

"Well don't say it!" shouted Jayne as he jumped out of his seat.

"It only works on her, Jayne." replied Zoe, calm and cool as always.

"Oh. Well now I know that." quipped Jayne.

"In case what happened?" asked Mal to Simon.

Mal's question caught Simon offguard as he responded "What?"

"You feel to elaborate on what that somethin' might be? I mean they taught you that fancy safeword, they must've figured she was gonna, what? Start uncontrollably crochetin'?" replied Mal, is anger building.

"They never said what." replied Simon.

"And you never did ask." replied Mal, who then grabbed Simon and threw him against the table, causing those who were sitting to jump back or flinch. Mal got in Simon's face and continued "A year and three months! A year and three months you had her on my boat, knowin' full well she might go monkeyshit at the wrong word, and you never said a thing!"

Simon was scared and it showed in his voice "I brought her out here so they couldn't get to her. I don't even know how they..."

My ship! My crew! You had a gorram timebomb livin' with us! yelled Mal, just as River woke up in the pantry. Mal didn't give Simon a chance to get a word in and continued "What if she went off in the middle of dinner, or in a bunk with Kaylee, did that give you a moment's pause?"

Simon looked at Kaylee, the truth of Mal's word hitting him.

"I thought she was getting better." replied Simon as he looked at Mal.

"And I thought they was gettin' off." piped Jayne. Everyone turned to look at the mercenary as he continued "Didn't we have an intricate plan on how they was goona be not here anymore?"

"We couldn't leave them now!" replied a hurt Kaylee.

"No, now that she's a...killer woman, we ought be bringin' her tea and dumplin's!" replied Jayne.

Mal looks at Jayne, at all of them, and doesn't have an answer.

"May I see her?" asked Simon.

Without a word, Mal steps aside and lets Simon enter the pantry, where his sister is being restrained.

"She goes wooly again, we're gonna have to put a bullet to her." chimed Jayne.

River mouths Mal's response just as he says it.

"It's crossed my mind." Mal replied.

Wash raised his hand and said "Can I make a suggestion that doesn't involve violence, or is this the wrong crowd?"

"Honey." replied Zoe as Wash put his hand down.

Wash turned to face the Captain and said "We need to get our bearings. I think we need to talk tp Mr. Universe.

Only on days that end in y. Oh and I found someone to play Pain. Pain is played by the WWE wrestler and actor, John Cena and Fly is played by none other than Kate Beckinsale.

Location: Ito's Bar & Lo Mein House - Persephone

Pain was enjoying a couple of brews as he sat at the bar. His daughter, Annabelle sat next to him, eating some sweet and sour chichken with rice, a half empty glass of Blue Sun Cola by her plate. The door opened and a familiar woman stepped inside.

"PAIN!" shouted Fly as she stood in the doorway.

Pain looked over and saw her, a smile appeared on his face as he said "Fly, long time no see."

Fly rushed over to him, almost knocking the air out of him, and hugged Pain tight. Fly proceeded to kiss Pain on the lips in a borderline friendly manner.

"I missed you somethin' fierce, Pain." replied Fly as she closed her eyes and rested her head on his chest.

"I missed you too, Fly." replied Pain as he hugged her. A beat passed and Pain said "Um Fly?"

"Yeah Pain?" asked Fly still hugging Pain.

"Could you let me go now? I think you're crushin' my spleen." replied Pain.

Fly released Pain and smiled "Sorry 'bout that Pain." Looking at the girl sitting at the bar, who's looking at them, Fly smiles, turns to Pain and says "That must be your daughter that you've been tellin' me 'bout in your waves."

Pain returned the smile "That she is and for the record, I don't mind your spleen crushin' hugs, Fly. My spleen does, but I don't." Motioning for his daughter to stand up, Pain continued "Annabelle this is your Aunt Fly. Fly this is your niece, Annabelle."

The two hugged each other for what seemed like an eternity, before they seperated.

"It's nice to meet you finally, Annabelle." replied Fly, smiling at the girl.

"It's nice to meet you too, Aunt Fly." replied Annabelle, returning Fly's smile with one of her own. She then looked up into her father's eyes and said "So are we leaving?"

Pain smiled back "As soon as I pay for the food and drinks sweety."

Fly scanned the area near the barstools that Pain and his daughter sat and said "I don't see any luggage. I thought you might've packed somethin' with you."

Pain handed Ito a twenty Cred note and said "Yeall all that's back at the house." Turning to Fly, Pain continued "Is Reggie here?"

Just as Pain finished saying that, Reggie stepped in.

"Aye dat Eye am, Pain. Deed ya mees me?" replied Reggie, flashing Pain a huge grin.

"Yes I did, Reggie, but that doesn't mean I'm kissin' you too." replied Pain, smiling.

"Wasn't expecteen' ya to, Pain. 'Sides yer ah bad keessah een da first place." retorted Reggie.

"You keep thinkin' that Reggie. So you got that mule of yours' outside?" asked Pain.

"Aye mon eet's gassed an' ready to go." replied Reggie. Looking at the girl by Pain's side and than back at Pain, Reggie raised an eyebrow and continued "Ain't ya goeen' to eentrtoduce me, Pain?"

"Oh right." replied Pain. Looking to his daughter, Pain said "Annabelle this is your Uncle Reggie." Looking back at Reggie, Pain said "Reggie this is your niece, Annabelle."

Reggie smiled and waved at the girl "Nice to meet ya."

Annabelle returned the smile and wave "Nice to meet you too, Uncle Reggie."

"All right lets go." replied Pain and the four of them left Ito's.

The four of them hopped into Reggie's mule, which looked like one of Pain's uncle's six wheeled mules, but with the exception that it had tracks instead of wheels.

From the back seat, Pain said with a smile "To home Jeeves and step on it."

Reggie turned around and said to Pain "Don't be geeveen' me dat sheet mon. 'Ow many times do Eye 'ave to keep telleen' ya, Eye ain't yer gorram drivah?"

Sarcastically, Pain responded "Well not with that attitude you're not." In a more serious tone, Pain continued "Seriously though, Reggie. I'd appreciate it if'n you didn't swear in front of my kid. It's bad enough that she gets it from me."

"Sorree mon, won't 'appeen again." replied Reggie, returning his attention to getting the mule started.

I wasn't aware that Jayne wore a jockstrap and I don't think I want to know either.

"And what did you do to need to come to my neck of the woods"

"Why do you assume I did somethin', preacher?" asked Mal.

"Cause there's only two reasons why people come here. To find work and to hide from something or someone." replied Book. Looking at Mal, Book gave him a wry smile and continued "By the looks of things, I'd say you're here because of the latter."

Continuing my little Pain, Fly, Reggie, and Annabelle subplot.

Reggie's mule with Reggie, Fly, Pain, and his daughter Annabelle, pull up to Pain's uncle's house. It's still lived in, but there isn't as much stuff there, as there was last time Fly was there.

"Place looks deserted, Pain. Where's everyone?" replied Fly as evryone except Annabelle got out of the mule.

"Santo. That's where my uncle moved his business and the family as well." replied Pain as he opened the door. He looked at Fly and said "I thought I told you about that in my wave I sent last week."

"Probleem weeth da Cortex last week kinda made eet deefeecult to reeceeve eeny waves, Pain." came Reggie's reply as he walked into the house and headed for the pile of boxes in the center of the floor.

"Reggie fixed it though." replied Fly as both her and Pain picked up some of the boxes. Smiling at Pain, she continued "How's Uncle Bobby doin' anyways?"

"He's doin' fine, Fly. In fact he can't wait to see you again which is why I waved you and Reggie to help ship this stuff over to him." replied Pain, as he set down his load of boxes into the mule's trailer.

"Eye 'ope Eye be geetteen' paid for dis." replied Reggie as he unloaded a couple of duffle bags onto the trailer.

Pain turned to Reggie and said "And you will once we arrive at Santo."

"I can't wait to see him again, Pain. How long are you goin' to be on Santo?" asked Fly as she picked up another box.

"Long enough to unload these boxes at the new house and perhaps a day or two afterwards." replied Pain as he picked up another load and set it down into the trailer. Looking at Fly he continued "After that, well I don't know, maybe go back to Serenity or somethin'."

"I wouldn't mid seein' the new house and hangin' out with your family, Pain." replied Fly. She looked over to Reggie who just put the last of the boxes into the trailer, and asked "Is it shiny with you if'n we stay on Santo for a bit, Reggie?"

Reggie secured the boxes in the trailer and said "Don't see why not, Fly. We don't 'ave to be at Paquin teel next week."

Pain raised an eyebrow "Do you two have a job lined up on Paquin"

"That we do, Pain." replied Fly, smiling. "Why do you wanna join?"

"Well I did just spend my last twenty Creds on food and drink for me and my duaghter, so I could use the money." He looks at his daughter who's sitting in the mule, playing a game on her portable CorePad, then looks at Reggie and says "That's of course if'n it's shiny with Reggie."

"Eet's fine by me, Pain. Eye need an extra gun'and eenyways. Ya can keep Fly companee while Eye do da negotiateen' mon." replied Reggie as he hoped into the mule and fired her up.

Pain smiled at Fly and said "That's fine with me."

"Me too." replied Fly, returning Pain's smile with one of her own.

"All righty den. Lets geet dees stuff back to da sheep an' geet off dis rock." replied Reggie as Fly and Pain got into the mule.

"You have sheep, Reggie? Since when?" asked Pain, giving the dreadlocked man a grin.

Reggie turned around and said "Don't ya be starteen' dat crap again, Pain. Ya know what I meent."

Pain continued to grin and said "I know, but I like messin' with you."

"Yer jus' as bad as Fly, Pain." replied Reggie as he drove the mule away from the empty house and towrds the Eavesdown Docks.

"Now you know where I get it from, Reggie." countered Pain.

Fly turned around to Pain and said "That's only 'cause I get it from you." At that she sticks her tongue out at Pain.

"You keep stickin' that tongue of yours out at me, and I'm goin to find a use for it, Fly." replied Pain, smiling.

Fly simply smiled and stuck her tongue out again, before returning her attention back to the road as they headed down to the Docks and for Reggie's ship.

Back on Haven

There was tons of food laid out on the tables under the tents. Enough to feed a small army or in this case, a settlement of miners, their families, and a certain ship's crew. Jayne walked over to the Shepherd and handed him a book of cigars, then grabbed two as Book took the box and thanked the mercenary.

"This is some good food preacher." replied Mal, sitting at one of the tables and chowing down on a plate of food.

"It's nothing really, just what we grow in the gardens and hunt." replied Book.

"It's damn tasty I might say." replied Mal, before stuffing his face.

Meanwhile in the Black

Pain had just kissed his daughter goodnight and walked into the desolate galley, where Fly was sitting on the couch in the alcove, with a bottle of mead.

Pain sat down next to her and said, as he put his feet on the coffee table "I just put the munchkin to bed. I appreciate Reggie's hospitality in givin' me and my daughter rooms and full run of the kitchen."

"It's nothin', Pain. I'm sure you'd of done the same." replied Fly, smiling as she handed Pain the bottle of mead.

Pain took a sip and said "That I would." Turning to Fly, Pain asked "So are you and him...you know?"

Fly was taken aback by Pain's question and said "What? No we're jus' friends is all. I'm sorry to say that I'm still single."

Pain raised an eyebrow and said "A pretty woman such as yourself, still single? Please tell me you're kiddin' me."

Fly takes the bottle from Pain and says "I kid you not, Pain." Sighing, she continues "I don't know what's wrong with me."

Pain puts an arm around Fly to comfort her, as she takes a drink and says "Ain't nothin' wrong with you, Fly. You're a damn fine woman and any man would be honored to have you. Hell I'd take you back if'n I could."

Fly smiled and said "That ship's sailed Pain, but I appreciate the kind words."

Fly hands Pain the bottle as he says "Thought I'd give it a shot and you're welcome as always." Turning to Fly and grinning, Pain continues "So anythin' new besides what you told me?"

"Well I did gewt a tattoo a few weeks ago. How 'bout you?" replied Fly.

Pain took a drink and said "I threatened Badger with a dummy grenade."

Fly rose an eyebrow and asked "Why'd you do that?"

"Cause he tried to proposition me for a job. I kindly told him I'd aquaint his face with the bar and he got all mad." replied Pain, handing Fly the bottle.

Fly took a sip and said "I could see why, but where does the grenade come in?"

"Right about when his goons pressed their guns into my back." answered Pain.

"Well I can't say you made a freind with Badger, Pain." replied Fly, giving Pain the bottle of mead.

Pain took a long sip of the sweet liquid and said "Eh he'll probably get over it." Turning to Fly, he continued "So back to the tattoo. What'd you get and where is it?"

Fly smiled and said "It's a dragonfly and it's on a part of my body that you haven't seen in four years."

Pain raised an eyebrow and said, grinning "So can I see it?"

Fly shook her head and said "Nope."

"Please?" asked Pain.

"Nope." replied Fly.

"Pretty please?" pleaded Pain.

"Nope." countered Fly.

"If I give you the Fifty, can I see it?" asked Pain, trying to persuade Fly.

Fly took a moment to consider what Pain had offered, then said with a grin "Nope and I'm off to my bunk."

Fly then got up, stepped over Pain's legs and left him alone in the galley, with the almost empty bottle of mead.

Continued from my last post.

Hours later

Pain was walking around inside Reggie's ship, a little buzzed when he heard the sound of the shower running. Thinking it was Fly, Pain quietly made his way over to the shower room door, quietly stepped in, and opened the shower's privacy door.

"GAH! WHAT DA 'ELL, PAIN!" yelled Reggie. "CLOSE DA DOOR AN' GEET DA 'ELL OUTTAH 'ERE!"

Pain shielded his eyes and said "Sorry Reggie I thought you were someone else."

As Pain exited the shower room, Reggie yelled "YA BETTER BE SORREE YA PERVERT!"

Pain closed the door and turned around, startled to see Fly leaning against the wall with her arms crossed, and a not too nice look in here eyes.

"Oh hey didn't see you there, Fly. I thought you went to your room." replied Pain.

Fly raised an eyebrow at Pain and said "I did, but when I heard Reggie scream, I came down to see what all the commotion was about." Fly looked Pain in the eyes and asked "You thought I was in there and thought you'd sneak a peek didn't you?"

Pain nodded and said "Yeah."

Fly rolled her eyes at Pain "Well you are persistent I'll give you that."

"One of the reasons why you love me." replied Pain, grinning.

Fly let out a sigh and said "Fine you can see it, but this'll be your only and last chance you get."

"Uh huh." replied Pain as Fly pulled her pants down, revealing the tattoo among other things. Tilting his head, Pain continued "Wow that's very nice and the tattoo's great as well. I really like the detail that went into the wings."

Fly immediately pulled her pants up and said "Glad you like it, cause that's the last time you're seein' it."

As Fly walked away, Pain called out "You sure about that?"

"Goodnight, Pain!" shouted Fly, not looking back at him.

Reggie stepped out of the shower room fully clothed and said "Pervert."

"I said I was sorry, Reggie." replied Pain as Reggie walked away. Reggie flipped Pain off, which caused Pain to comment "Hey that's not nice! Don't make me wave your mama and tell her what you got pierced!"

Jayne, a guitar, and seven jugs of high tension. A fantastic combination, as our little shindig on Haven proved. The merc pulled out a guitar from ka-knows-where, started plucking out a tune. Liquor flowed and notes played, and I had a chance to socialize with some of the stranger people around me.

13. The last I'd seen of him, he was shrouded by a deep anger, arms folded and robotic eyes burning. Now he was a lovey-dovey granola type, smiling at everyone (including Reynolds) and playing with his hands. Peculiar.

He told me that 'the strings was talking to him', and then he grinned happily, dancing a jig to Jayne's guitar.

I'm not worried about the babbling brook for once, even after Beaumonde and the great bar massacre. Maybe ka is giving me a spot of peace. Or maybe it's just the liquor.

More later. I'm going to try to breathe some fire now. Kaylee made me a bet that I can't refuse.

You know, that Captain Reynolds has got quite the rack on him...just fooling, heh-ruttin-heh!

So, Constant Gorram Reader. I've been breathing and drinking fire for the last hour, made a pretty girl giggle, and learned to play something called 'METTALIKKA' on Jayne's big damn sixstring. And NO, that was not a penis metaphor.

Pretty. More than pretty. That Kaylee girl's damn lucky, considering her origins and such. I'm writing this as she's speaking to Jayne and that dastardly Wolf guy about something to do with churning engines and cattle.

Oh, she just winked at Wolf! See that, CGR? That's sonofabitching important! See, those two used to rutt all the time (from what I've heard, winkity winkity!) and then they broke up or took a break or something like that. But little engineer-girl's got more than socket wrenches and AC management on her mind, from that one eye batter!

Oh, to be young and lustful again. Well, I suppose I'm not that old. And lustful...well, let's just say there's been more than one night where I fantasized about Wash being not here. (no offense to the man, his wife is just damn fine)

Now, while we're on the subject of Wolf and Kaylee, I think that the good doctor should 'make his play.' To clarify, he should jump that mare, and jump her QUICK, cause Wolf has got decent looks, mystery, and a warrior's spirit, while S-Tam is a stuck-up little prig. I was a little conceited when I lived in the Core, sure, but not as much as that tard, no siree! For some reason, Smylee likes him. Can't tell why.

Man, this night is getting better and better. The only thing that could spoil it is somebody dipping into my drunk papers! (YOU READING THIS, REYNOLDS? GET YOUR WAR-TORN EYES OUTTA HERE!!)

On Haven

With guitar in hand and a good heap of alcohol in his stomach, Jayne started to strum the guitar strings and sang with his heart.

"Take my love. Take my land.
Take me where I cannot stand.
I don't care, I'm still free.
You can't take the sky from me.

Take me out to the black.
Tell 'em I ain't comin' back.
Burn the land And boil the sea.
You can't take the sky from me.

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.
But you can't take the sky from me."

I'm amazed I can hold my pencil now, with so much alkie-haul burning out my stomach. Amazed I can even string sentences together in my gorram HEAD, much less on paper.

Jayne got a pretty decent voice on him, singing that ballad of...Tranquility? Calm? What-gorram-ever.

Oh, that blurry girl-shape just fell asleep on blurry other man shape. Blurry man shape is looking uncomfortable. Can't quite see his face, but he's looking around like a gorram turkey.

Well, I guess I should-

I'm Back again but where the hell is everyone

John could feel the joy that Haven reeked of. It hurt. He knew what was coming. Being here he could feel the emptyness. Oath was collapsed of that journal thing. Jayne had performed a stirring ballad to the shp that I doubt he'll remember in the morning, and everyone else had left the thread because they hate me .

Kaylee was flirting with Wolf. And river was huddled by the fire. John approached her.

"You can feel it can't you"

"The nothingness it hurts" The captain was talking to Book.

"What do you think they're talking about"

"Belief"

"It's overated"

"It shouldn't be"

Funfact! The first time I saw the movie I thought Book was talking to Mal about "The Leaf" I only figured it out after buying the DVD

Watch the movie it helped with mine.

After some hugs and tears the crew loaded back on theboat and left Haven. Going no where in particular of to find a job maybe. Early one "morning" A wave came in.

"Inara" Mal said shocked.

"Is this um a bad time" the companion replied.

The stiff conversation continued on as the entire crew flocked to the bridge to watch.

"Aw she wants us to come and visit" Kaylee said when she asked for their help. She was quickly shushed by all around.

"You left some things we put them in a box" Mal said over the wave.

"I didn't mean to leave things."

"Well I didn't look threw them" After a akward pause "Kaylee's missin you somethin feirce." A collective groan of dissapointment echo over the crowd. John threw his popcorn at the screen. After a while the captain joined the crew in the bridge.

"Trap?" Zoe asked.

"Trap" Mal replied.

"We goin in" John questioned. Mal nodded

"Wait what about the partwhere it's a trap" Wash asked

"How do we know it's a trap?" Kaylee chimed in "Couldn't it be Inara Just missin you. People have feelin's you know. We're talking here about people."

"I figure you were watchin" Mal asked. The crew nodded. "Trap"

So you know if one of you writes the scene where Mal goes to resue her I want to go with him

Post modified to include John.

Seventy miles from the Training House

Serenity flies gracefully over a mountain range, the sun glinting off her big glowing butt, which wasn't so much as glowing since she was in atmo. Mal had just walked onto the Bridge after having a chat with John. The man's reason to come along puzzled Mal, but right now it there wasn't time to question it.

"We're about seventy miles from the Traing House and nobody on radar. If the Alliance is about, they're laying low." replied Wash from the pilot's seat.

"They're about. Find us a home. John and I'll take the shuttle in closer. Zoe, ship is yours." replied Mal before he started to make his way off the Bridge. He stopped, turned to Zoe and said "Remember. If anythin' happens to us, or you don't hear from me within the hour...you take this ship and you come and rescue us."

Zoe leaned on the console near her husband and said, smiling "What? And risk my ship?"

As Mal began to exit, he said "I mean it. It's cold out there. I don't wanna get left and I'm right sure that John don't either."

Mal then left the Bridge and made his way into the Galley where John was waiting. Walking over to the man, Mal asked "You sure you wanna do this?"

Hopefully when Ertia gets back from her vacation, she'll post something for Inara and that lady with amnesia. What was her name again?

BIG BADA BUMP! If I had a nickel for every time I had to bump this thread, I'd be rich.

"Don't worry about me Captain, I'll be fine." replied John, before setting off to do what he was going to do.

"Right." replied Mal, watching the other man go before heading off to do what he was going to do.

Exterior Hall of the Companion Training House

A line of young trainees file by in robes with red shawls pulled over their head, including a trainee who stands a good deal larger than the rest.

Inara's Room - Later

Inara is kneeling in front of a statue of Buddha, lighting a few sticks of incense (or so she says ). The room is sparsely lush and not as opulent as the shuttle she used to entertain clients in, but still beautifuly furnished and draped. A lace curtain hangs in front of the light, casting its pattern in shadow over everything, including the rather large figure in a red shawl, who kneels beside her.

"Dear Buddha, please send me a pony, and a plastic rocket, and a..."

Inara was suprised and shocked and it showed in her voice.

"Mal! What are you doing here?" she asked.

"You invited me." replied Mal.

"I never thought for a second you'd be stupid enough to come!" yelled Inara.

"Well that makes you kind of a tease, doesn't it?" quipped Mal, giving Inara that quirky smile of his.

"You knew my invitation wasn't on the level." replied Inara, lowering her voice just a tad.

"Which led me to the conclusion that you must be in some trouble." replied Mal.

"I'm fine! I'm... giddy." shot back Inara. Why must Mal be such an ass?

"For a woman schooled in tellin' men what they wanna hear, you ain't much of a liar." replied Mal, knowing full well that he was getting underneath Inara's skin.

"Mal, you cannot handle this man." pleaded Inara.

The Operative had been listening in on their conversation and chose that time to enter the room.

"I have to say, I'm impressed that you would come for her yourself. And that you would make it this far in that outfit." replied the Operative, looking at Mal in his getup.

Mal stood up, eyeing the man and said "I can be very graceful when I need to."

"I've no doubt." replied the Operative, cooly.

Mal shed his robe and shawl as Inara kneeled at the altair and picked out another stick of incense.

"What are you doin'?" asked Mal as he watched her.

"I'm praying for you, Mal." responded Inara, not looking at him as she lit the incense.

"That's very thoughtful, but I mean it when I say you're not in any danger." replied the Operative.

"Speak your piece." replied Mal, turning his attention back to the man.

"I think you're beginning to understand how dangerous River Tam is." spoke the Operative to Mal.

"She is a mite unpredictable. Mood swings, of a sort." replied Mal.

Malcolm Reynolds was being cocky and the Operative knew that, but let it pass as he said "It's worse than you know."

"It usually is." replied Mal.

Sammy's memory was gone, but her common sense, seemingly, had stayed intact.

From behind the heavy tapestry, she watched the interplay between the man who had come- the dark and dangerous one- and Malcolm Reynolds, who's face tugged at her memories, tried to bring them clear again.

They were in danger. More danger than they had ever... no... somehow she knew that they'd been in just as much danger before.

"It's worse than you know."

Yeah. Nothin' like stating the obvious.

"It usually is." Mal's voice, seemingly calm, but betraying his stress.

"That girl will rain destruction down on you and your ship."

Gorram it. This was going to go badly. Sammy stepped out from her hiding place, her grin sticking firmly in place, "Well, she wouldn't be the first, would she Cap? Hiya, Captain, good to see you."

"Ertia." Mal didn't look away from the Operative as he greeted her.

She gave him a quick bow and another to the Operative, "Uh, listen, tall and dark, you maybe don't know how we do things, so ummm..." What the hell was she doing? Her heart was pounding, "Let me just say, death, danger, murder... we're no strangers. You got something you want to say, say it."

The Operative's gaze swept over her and then back to Mal, dismissing her, "She's cute. But I have no patience for games, Captain Reynolds. I've seen your war record, I know how you must feel about the Alliance."

"You really don't." Mal's confidence was bolstering, and Sammy slipped past behind him, towards the bed, towards the thick soft pillows, and the heavy marble candlesticks beyond them.

Distracting, buying time...what was Inara doing praying at a time like this? ... Sammy interjected, "Unless of course the Alliance destroyed everything you loved, tortured your people, imprisoned your family, took your entire life and left you to rot in hell..."

She grinned at the Operative again, leaning forward curiously, "Did they?"

"This isn't about me." The Operative's voice was calm, his eyes still on Mal as he addressed her, "Nor is it about you, Kitten."

His deliberate use of her hacker identity silenced her, as he must have known it would. "You can all go on your way. As soon as you let me take River Tam back home."

"I already know you will not see reason."

Mal countered, and Sammy drew back a step, when the quiet words, "Alliance wanted to show me reason they shouldn't have sent an assassin."

Assassin. The Operative froze, turned slowly. He was playing his ace card, Sammy realized. Here was where it was all going to come down.

Locked on to Serenity's pulse beacon? Sammy nearly choked with laughter. She and Kaylee had rigged that beacon themselves! The pulse beacon she'd stolen from the junkyard after they'd blown up that Alliance cruiser...

The pulse beacon she'd stolen. Had she done that? When? Did it matter? Another lost fragment of her broken mind returning... not important

Mal would have thought of that. But then she saw the cold nervousness on Inara's face and met her gaze, shrugging. He WOULD have thought of that? Wouldn't he? The relief when he pulled the beacon from his coat and tossed to the Operative
was palpable.

Sammy couldn't help it. She laughed outloud, even as her fingers closed around the marble candlestick at her back. "Huh. Looks an awful lot like a pulse beacon there."
