I surprised myself by watching this show. I have only been watching "Medium" and "My Name Is Earl" for the last year or so.
Not a bad start. Hope the writers are up to the task of keeping this interesting.
No mention as to why Nathan was forced into this. They will keep that secret till the series ends.
I think this show will make it. It has a lot to offer. So I expect at least four good years and maybe more. Fox seems to have got their act together and got this program off with a excellent start.
I loved the way Nathan's character kicked the guy in the head, in the bath tube, when he got tired of listening to his dribble.
I am going to put this on my list with "Medium" and "My Name Is Earl".
I might actually start looking out for more TV shows to watch.
It has already been mention, but when they took the other car and it stalled on them it was just as if I was waiting for Nathan to say "Why doesn't it ever go smooth?"
On that note I will pause.
I think you all realize this show has my vote.
I new there would be thread about "Drive" and was not to surprised to how large it is already.
Will see it tonight if they honest abiut it being a regular Monday night program.

But this is pretty pedestrian (apart from the far out idea) - somebody better start pulling out some brilliant writing very soon, or it will be fast forward through the boring contestants.

I have the feeling that the powers-that-be are taking bets on who will win, and each investing effort to get their team to win. Alex's um, host? OK Alex's host went to the trouble of hiring Officer Pseudo-Poole to shake up Alex a bit. Could holmes/bro's father also be a host? Play his own sons in the game?

Hope the ratings for tonight's will be a little better than last night's. Yeah, it'll probably get smoked by the celeb dancing show, but maybe if it can be competitive with the other two networks' offerings... Be interested to know how expensive each ep is to produce, too (and also what the network's expectations for it are). If it's fairly reasonable, cost-wise, they might give it a longer leash; if it's wicked expensive, I have a feeling we'll be lucky to see ep#6...
I'm gonna be
if it gets canned, 'cause there's so few things on TV I even watch anymore. I'm still angry about "Wonderfalls" getting axed after just 3 eps...

Where do I begin? Every time they start in with some real good characterization, or they take it somewhere I'm interested in going, Alex gets hit in the head!! My mom and brother called the "you killed my partner" bit, and on and on and on. There's too much damn action, and the special effects are very noticeable.
Tully hasn't slept in at least a day; they're not telling us anything really about "these people;" and for me it's all just smoke and mirrors - whatever big reveal they have planned at the end of forever cannot possibly be as big or as bad as they're desperately trying to make us believe it is. It all seems more than implausible, and... grr.
But, Nathan Fillion's on TV again, and I have nothing better to do Monday nights. Who knows? Maybe it'll get better... eventually. 'Till then, the only people I like are the dad and daughter, the manager-type guy ("going to the police would be immediate grounds for disqualification"), and Alex (and, by extension, Corinna, because they are partners). All the rest of it is more or less crap, in my honest opinion.

I think there are people who want Alex to win the race and I think there are people who want Alex to not win the race.
Select to view spoiler:
Easiest way to get Tully out of the race is to simply give him his wife. Maybe the truck driver could not tell him directly that she was there...but if Alex asked he might permission to give her to him. Or it just might have been a way to drive Alex crazy. Think how they must have tortured the parents of little blond girl in the race 27 years ago.
I don't think there was any sound coming from the phone. Alex was remembering what the truck driver said earlier.

Wasn't there a line in the opener to the effect "someone's got a lot riding on you". Immediately we assume it's his wife but the guy could have been talking about some high roller. Would fit since the winner supposedly gets $32 million.
The truck was a nice touch but that car is one bad mofo. Wouldn't mind if a Hemi showed up soon...a real Hemi not the crap Dodge rolls out nowadays.
Earlier in the thread I was pondering why the drivers weren't being noticed by the police. A co-worker of mine suggested that perhaps they have been advised to avoid the contestants. If the men behind the curtain are powerful enough to set up constant surveillance and organize elaborate hoaxes then it could be plausible. The only fault I find with the idea is that in this day and age people are always using cell phones to call the police and photograph unusual goings on. What are the authorites saying when they receive dozens of phone calls about reckless driving? "A...yes sir...we've received several calls on this matter and will look into it".
Still liking it.

The two things I loved about this episode was the father/daughter sub-plot and the reveal that the rogue cop was another part of the race and the reveal of Alex's old car. As much as I loved the brown truck because it reminded me of Serenity, I love this other car so much more. With this guy, the trucker (played by the same guy tht played Allan Grey in ENTOURAGE, that's where I know him from) and Beth Grant the waitress, you really get that Kafka like sense that no matter where you go or pull off at during the race, there's no escape.
I love how the other person on the phone with Dylan Baker wasn't the ex-wife but his doctor. Not only does it show that the father really CAN lie well, but it's that extra bit of pathos that lying to her brings him and her closer together. Only sets up the inevitable downfall of him.
And I like the fact that the ep ended at a drive-in theatre. Only wish we saw the actual film.
Looking forward to next weeks ep. Answers what the racers do for money. Credit cards and bank accounts can only go so far.

Does Alex remind anyone of the original, moodier Mal from the original Serenity pilot? Not for the version that was revised and aired.
Here's a link to that eppy if anyone hasn't seen it: http://versaphile.com/download/firefly.html. That eppy is the one marked as '1x00 "Serenity"' at the bottom.
Anywho, I didn't see a lot of similarities in the characters, as Mal is running from and Alex is running to. They just have that same quality of moodiness.
And, on another note (I'm gonna turn into my 14 year old self for this one): Alex's old/new car is soooooooooooo hot! It really makes a girl want to jump in and ride off with him. Not that I wouldn't have if he was driving the truck. It's just... it's a girl thing!

I personally hope there are various people betting on the contestants as opposed to one eccentric, semi-omnesceint billionaire pitting people against one another for fun. That'd be a bit cliche. However, would you rather see Tully win the race and get his wife back or go outside the rules and get his wife back by taking down the race organizers and preventing future races?

So, I'm loving Nathan, but disappointed with most everything else. Characters and subplots are a bit flat and contrived for me. Sorry! I'm still watching, assuming it'll get better, because it's Tim.
I do like the highway chase scenes and music, and the camera work is pretty sweet, like the first bit of the race when they're all leaving the hotel.
I just hope that not every highway in the US looks exactly like the one they've been on, with a double yellow line right down the middle but everyone going the same way...
Can't agree more with you about the highway. I-75 doesn't look like that at any point that I'm aware of and there is absolutely no mountain range on any horizon near Gainesville.
Besides that, I don't know where you get off saying that his car was in the back of the semi and not his wife. The trucker had a picture of his wife, not the car. I suppose his car could have been in the back as well, but his wife was definitely also there.

It makes sense to me - the car sure as hell will help him finish the race. His wife? Not so much. Yeah, probably she was there too, because the baddies playing him have to be following him around with all they need to play with his head - the wife, the camera phone to call him with at any second he may demand it, the car and all they need to set up a warehouse with the faux cop shop and the good backlighting for said pretty car, etc. (Contrived? Not at all!)
As for where I get off saying it... in my office, I guess, cause that's where I am. Oh yeah, gettin' off!

Sorry mal4prez, not mad at all. Its just that I don't remember the truck driver saying what he had in the back would help Alex finish the race but that what he had in the back would help give him a way out of the race. "where you get off" does sound hostile and I'm sorry, definitely wasn't my intention.

No problem - I thought it was funny!
I could be making up the words the driver said, but I remember it as being something to help him finish, which confused me when the wife showed up. The car just makes so much more sense.
I do like the idea of a truck load of Alex Tully emergency supplies following him across the country.

I've watched all three episodes and after the 2nd I was thinking that it was OK...but that it was nothing incredible. The only reason my interest held is because of the Minear/Fillion connection.
After the third episode however, I think the show is starting to find it's footing. I think there are all kinds of plot lines that could be folded into the plot if done effectively. Also, many of the characters still need to be made more impactful to the audience.
Possible Spoiler for anyone who hasn't seen the shows yet.....
I'm convinced Alex Tully was a professional get-away driver. He quit that life when a certain job went wrong and innocents were killed (which is uncool to him as he has our captain's morals). The sponsors sought him out because he was good...very good in that profession.
Between his skills and the combined vendettas of him and his partner...I assume the show will spend lots of time on unraveling the consipiracy theory of the entire race in almost an x-files fashion.

I wasn't crazy about the 2-hour episode... but I watched the Monday night ep because I really, really want to like the show (b/c of Nathan and Tim Minear) and after that bit with the car and all, I am completely hooked. My roommate and I were both screaming at the tv by the end of the episode (No! What?! It can't end now! Son of a B****!!). Don't much care for the theme song though.
Yin Yang, I just couldn't leave this alone... Alex Tulley hasn't slept in at least a day, but Jack Bauer hasn't peed in at least 2 seasons. Well at least we know Drive isn't alone in the leaving out the little things.

The show seems decent and much better than most of the crap on TV. The only thing that really bothered me about the show was the racing sequences...I know they're not going to stop with that, but I think the show would be better if they did.

Hello Grayfury:
I was trying to think of the title "Vanishing Point" and it would not enter my head. So glad you remembered it. It so reminded of that movie when Nathan let that sucker fly.
They knew how to make cars back then.

I really wish they had picked a better premise for this show. As it is I can't get into the show at all. The amount of suspension of disbelief required is just too great. These people must be blithering idiots to just give up their lives for an illegal race. The cops must be blithering idiots to not pull these cars over. The writers must be blithering idiots to have so many of these people stop for hours and yet still all end up getting to the checkpoints at the same time.
I don't even find myself caring about Nathan's character. We really needed to see him and his wife together to establish her character. As it stands I'm not too concerned for her. She could be an evil @#$* for all we know. Nathan's partner is extremly annoying and I'm hoping Tim sticks with his killer instincts and starts axing people. She'd be first on my list quickly followed by old dude and his daughter. The homie stereotype boy and his brother. The best character of them all is the mom. Something about her acting just makes you feel for her.
Anyway I'll keep giving it a shot until How I Met Your Mother comes back and takes over the timeslot.

I waited until I'd seen all 3 eps. before I posted, and now I have.
The biggest plus to me (besides Nathan & Tim, obviously)was the Wendy character. I've liked the actress in just about every role I've seen her in and I think this one just might be my favorite (and I even have a girlie-girl obsession with EVER AFTER)...Wendy is adorable! I also ended up liking Mal's (I mean Alex's) partner way more than I expected to.
The negatives, in my opinion, were the latino brothers (ex-con: stereotypical; preppy one: okay actor, but miscast); the father-daughter team I felt would've been enjoyable with a different actress in the part; that Wendy got out of shooting the annoying Taryn Manning character who is probably going to grate more than any of them; and finally (and I'm not sure if this is necessarily a negative or not but) that I figured out both that Corrinna was the little girl in the flashback and that Amy Acker was in the back of the semi pretty early on in each case.
Overall, I liked the show, found myself drawn in immediately and stayed hooked throughout the majority of the first two hours, then started to feel my interest slightly decreasing during the third hour. Whether or not that will continue I don't know yet, but I plan to keep watching to find out. I still adore Nathan, and I will continue to worship the ground that Tim Minear has walked on since ANGEL. But I do not feel I will ever connect to any of these characters the way I have to Joss's characters.

okay so I had been waiting to see Drive for months since the promos started airing and the sight of Nathan on that TV screen was a beautiful thing.
So my friend (who like Firefly well enough) says hey that show Drive has Mal in it doesn't it, (after she saw a promo) Yes! I replied rather ecstatic.
I have been labeled obsessed by the way, Obsessed with Nathan Fillion, Imagine! Okay so it is true, but I only share that with priviledged parties, like you fine folks. Anyway I started watching because of Nathan and will keep watching because of Nathan but I also genuinly am enjoying this show. There is just something about fast cars driven by Nathan Fillion to get a girl's heart rate up. I caught the Early/Mal thing with surprise and my brother turned to me when we first saw Alex Tully's wife's photo. "That is Fred!" we cried together with big grins on our faces saying how cool that was. I will glady tune in again and hope that the series lasts for a while.
The whole "You want to meet the real me" thing made me grin and my mom and brother were wondering what I was thinking and I didn't enlighten them, if they don't remember where it is from, well too bad. I get labled obsessed if I open my mouth.
There was a part in the ealy part of the first episode that for some reason made me go "mmm boy" or something similar in my head. When Alex comes into the orientation conference room late and the little chairperson man is being smart with him about where his wife is. Then Alex grabs the little man's shirt and lifts him up and slams him on the table, Alex had had enough messing around. I found Alex/Nathan to be very sexy when he did that( not sure why considering all the assult going on, but hey there it is)
I like the little playing on words of the riddles and the emerging storylines and secrets of the Drivers. I will keep watching.

I agree with Wendy's statement "I think I should have shot you". I cannot stand that girl, whatever her name is. And the brother whose every other word is "homes" also needs to be shot. Meh. Not to be a downer, but my suspension of disbelief just does not extend to dozens of people with missing wives, daughters, or other loved ones choosing *NOT* to beat powerpoint man to the ground and call the police. The chances of tracing him back to whoever is pulling the strings has got to be better than the 1-in-lots-of-people chance of winning the race (plus having to believe that the bastards who set you up in this situation are going to live up to their word).
Sorry Tim, I really wanted to like it.

Cybersnark: I don't think disqualification means that the person they care for is killed. Corrina wasn't killed, remember - and her parents were just as good as disqualified. Besides, they wouldn't need to kill anybody. It's just as bad knowing that you'll never see them again.

When Wendy is pointeing the gun at her she says thay are making her do it and that if blondy's still in that car at the next checkpoint than she, Wendy, is out. She never says anything about a penalty. So far the only one we've seen taht seem to know about them are Wendy herself, Corinna who has previous knowledge of the race, and noncontestants. Yet blondy's exact line is "You want to make good on your penalty?" How does she know it was a penalty?
