Joss has said that he wrote the script to 'Serenity' with the new viewer in mind, but put a few things in there that we longtime fans will be escpecially able to appreciate. Anyone care to guess at what some of those might be?

My first guess: during some land-based battle, Serenity will make a low-altitude fly-over with engines tipped earthward at full blast and knock a bunch of enemies off their feet/horses.

RIVER

I'm thinking that the Hero of Canton will attempt to use some of his "dishes" or "garbage" chits and get busted in a major way.

Or ... Inara invites Mal into her shuttle and stores away the hourglass.

Maybe during a discussion about the alliance, River uses dinosaur toys to portray herself, Simon and the rest of the crew ... mumbling about 'inevitable betrayal'.

Maybe we'd meet a character named "Ariel" or "Lassiter".

Perhaps while dealing with a rather difficult middleman, Mal could complain about being 'badgered'.

It would be great to see the big red button somewhere. Maybe Wash could hit it at the beginning of the movie and say something like "Message received".

YES!! We needthe red button!!

There also needs to be the theme song in some form or another. Anything with Vera will get a grin out of us as would anything with Dinosaurs.

Lastly we are in dire need of some swearing by pretty floral bonnets and a This Land.

I think it needs to be something that has us Browncoats howling while the rest of the people in the theater are going "what the hell's so funny?"....like Jayne saying he'll be in his bunk, don't even have to be in a sexual context, we'd all get it...or Book saying something about the Special Hell.

But one thing that worries me is my memories of the '96 tv movie of Doctor Who, where they played to the core fans SO much that they lost everyone else. From that point, I'd settle for no inside jokes to have more good Firefly.

If they put them in GREAT; just keep them in balance.

I think a few indside jokes will be fine as long as plot points don't hinge on them. Quiet, off to the side... heck, it'd be kind of neat if they were so subtle that some old fans didn't catch all of them. Then you could feel totally justified seeing it again and again and again - just to be sure you'd caught them all.

I'm all for the button. Also, someone could be humming "The Hero of Canton" while they work.

How about a fox sneaks aboard the ship when they are planetside and causes all kinds of grief getting into the food, defecating in odd places, scaring folks. The crew can take turns cursing at the fox. Jayne can spent a little time trying to hunt it down. When they finally get rid of the fox, Mal could casually mention that the gorram fox almost destroyed his ship.

I'd be rolling in the aisles.

Also rolling around in my brain is if someone calls Wash on the fact that he always hits the same 3 switches for everything.

Book saying "well, isn't that...special" in regards to just about anything.

While on a "job": Mal having dinner at a fine dining establishment with Inarra and being asked by the waiter if he'd like the special of the day - glazed duck garnished with saffron. Mal chokes and spits water all over the waiter.

Jayne, Simon, and River sitting in a waiting room full of people. An employee comes out and calls the next person to be helped as "Jane". Five women and Jayne stand up. Simon & River glance at Jayne then look at each other and just smile...

Any reference to someone or something having "smallish droppings".

A bald Book and River says "I liked you better with the hair"

The camera pans across a busy crowd at a port somewhere, planetside or space, and as it passes two men, drunk or somesuch, one is kneeling the other is helping his buddy up and says, "Hell, Static, you know the old saying..." then the camera picks up on Mal and the group.

Crazy Ivan wasn't coined by Firefly. It is the term used to describe in general, Soviet submariners and in specific, the turning a ship 180 degrees and has been around since the early days of the cold war.

One example of it being used in modern cinema is in "The Hunt for Red October" when Jack Ryan is trying to convince the American sub captain that he understands the Russian Captain. He tells him that 'at the top of the hour, he'll do a Crazy Ivan'.

v.1: Jayne singing it to himself while cleaning Vera, and cutting off when someone walks in

v.2: having one the crew (Simon? Wash?) singing it and cutting off when Jayne walks in.

Uhhh I was referring to the Mission of the Sturgeon class attack submarine USS Lapon SSN 661 when it trailed the newest Russian submarine the Yankee I class SSBN thou out its entire patrol (about 40 Days!). A newspaper leaked out that the Russian sub was not a quiet as believed (which was untrue) and the Russians learned of it and informed all its SSBNs that they maybe being trailed. The Yankee Lapon was trailing reversed course at high speed (due to its high speed it failed to detect Lapon) which spawned the term "Crazy Ivan" along with some songs written by Tommy Cox a sailor on the Lapon.

BTW it was the bottom of the hour that Ramus turned to Starboard.

Even better- Joss pushes it. Then Mal comes up onto the bridge and starts talking to him, so Joss has a cameo as a potential passenger on Serenity or something.

I like ice cream 'cause it doesn't have any bones in it.

YES! That would be GREAT! Or, if Joss started talking to the audience, Mal comes in "What in the..." (I'll leave that up to your minds...), and a conversation about "No touching buttons" ensues.

Shot of Inara playing some instrument (like the shamisen or harp or something incredibly femenine. But she's playing "The Hero of Canton". Although she had no way of hearing that song in Jaynestown, it would be a nice shout out to fans.

What if all the browncoats started singing in the theater? That'd be great.

The red button was in Out of Gas, but it has more significance than just that. If you watch the commentaries, you will see. In the episode, Wash hooks up the button and says, "When your miracle gets here, you just pound this button once. It'll call back both shuttles." Alan Tudyk (Wash) stole this button and gave it to Joss Whedon after the show ended with a note telling him it was for when his miracle comes, and now Joss has it in his office. That's why it's so significant. The movie is the miracle, so it needs the red button.

BTW, I would love to see river rub soup in her hair.........

Book: I'd forgotten - you're moonlighting as a criminal mastermind now.

I think someone brought up this idea before, maybe on another thread... but how about Mal and Zoe happen to stop by on a planet where they just happen to be walking by a certain spot. It's snowing. Some others are gathering too, look like browncoats for a little reunion. There's a flag pole or something else that symbolizes the struggle of the independents in the war. And they all recite the independents motto.

I think seeing that same scene that Static depicted for us so well in his thread:
http://www.fireflyfans.net/thread.asp?b=2&t=3853
up on the big screen would be very shiny!

I'm sure there will be subtle things; and that's good enough for me. Things in the backround: Wash's dinosaurs; Jayne's old shirts, or old guns; Kaylee's dress; Inara's sand-thing. Things that someone unfamiliar with the show wouldn't even notice.

I'm convinced there will be a lot in the movie for us fans; Joss always rewards frequent viewers with little inside jokes. I'm reminded of Spike, and those onion-blossom things, or that one soap-opera he liked.

That was funny stuff.

I think the best insider thing Joss could do would be to tell us some of the backstory of Inara and Book -- our 2 remaining mystery crew.

As for insider jokes, how can there not be so many that we won't be able to count them all? After all, the characters and the writers will be the same... The characters just have to be 'themselves' for us true fans to find ourselves ROTFLMAOs!

Everyone has listed so many good ideas! I'd love to see any reference to the Hero of Canton, the geisha wobble-heads, the label-less cans, etc. These things would all be easy to work in because Joss is *so* good at layering details, as we saw in just about every episode. I think that he's going to be able to put plenty of inside jokes in without having any impact on the "newness" of the movie.

I am pretty sure we'll see Vera in the movie. You have to assume he'd still have his favorite gun, and after all, she's kind of the 11th crew member. (Serenity being the 10th of course )

My suggestion for the inside joke:

Some badly pronounced yet colorfully funny Chinese swearing involving a red-furred animal with a white-tipped tail.

Most of us don't speak Chinese so this inside joke would be lost when Serenity is seen for the first couple of times but soon the translations would start circling the net and by the time of BDM's DVD release this would be everyone's new favorite curse which you would have learned by heart and used often.

-Kaylee catches Mal glaring at a large crate.
KAYLEE: What's the matter, Captain?
MAL: The last coupla time's we had a crate that size, they had people in 'em. (beat) Kaylee, get me a crowbar.

-Kaylee finds something saying 'Fox' on it. She shows it to Simon, and says teasingly, "They're asking money for this crap?"

-Wash sees a sign, and points it out to Zoe. She looks at it and laughs. The sign? "Black Market Beagles For Sale."

-Jayne walks past the Tam siblings in a red T-shirt. River turns to Simon: " I told you he looks better in red." Simon raises his eyebrows and nods.

-Simon shows up with a black moustache.
Book: "It suits you."

Introduce Book (or cut to him from different scene) mid sentence looking at the camera "you know there's a special place in hell for people like you" pull/cut back and hes talking to Jayne or someone else (or a gaisha doll with a wobbly head)

I'd like just a wuick glimpse of Safron in the background walking towards the crew (doesn't matter who how many as long as mals there) sees them and turns and runs the other way without them noticing.
