Well, a little backstory about how I even started watching Firefly. Like a few others here, I came to Firefly very late in the game. I had a friend who kept bugging me about this show called "Buffy....". I mean BUGGING me! It got to the point where it was almost intervention time! lol Anyways, I caught an episode of Buffy somewhere in the 6th season and thought, "Why is this redheaded girl's hair now black?!?!" Then, a little while later, I catch a 3rd season episode of Angel and think, "Who the heck is this Gunn character and why is that girl named Fred?!?!" Well that was it, I just knew these shows were stupid! What was I thinking? ppfffttt!!!

Well, suffice it to say, I gave Buffy another chance. I actually rented the only (it seemed) VHS tapes of Buffy I could find. I liked what I saw so I bought the 1st season of Buffy on DVD. With every boxset I bought (both Buffy and Angel) it just got better and better. It was like a frickin' drug!! I couldn't stop myself.

Then a good friend of mine (who I had met through an Angel website) started suggesting that I watch this "Firefly" show as well. ("You've GOT to get the DVD's! They are just awesome!") Well, by this time, money was tight and I really couldn't justify buying them right then. Thank the gods for the Sci-Fi channel! I found out they would be showing the episodes and I was so freakin' happy!

So, to make a long story even longer, the scene that really reeled me into this show was the same scene that was showed over and over again in the Sci-Fi promos....from "War Stories"....when Mal is being choked by Niska's henchman and Zoe says something like, "This is something the cap'n has to do for himself." Through Mal's muffled throat comes the pathetic cry, "No it isn't....no it isn't!"

Ya just can't write stuff like that! (Oh wait a minute, yes you can!!)

I missed the series on Fox being self-employed in Las Vegas, then Serenity came out while I was in Iraq (talk about bad gorramn timing).

I saw Serenity on HBO, but kept only seing snippets dur to time and when I would find it. Because of this though, by the time I caught the movie at it's beginning I had seen it in parts something like 15 times.

I started talking about it and my friend offered to let me borrow his DVDs of the series since I was going to be an invalid for a couple of months.

I was 'officially' hooked when I saw Wash play with his dinosaurs for the first time.

"...let's not ruin an otherwise pleasant day with unnecessary bloodshed..."

I saw Serenity first and really liked it. I borrowed Firefly from my best friend's little bro (he got it for Christmas). I scurried back to my house (yes, I scurried - I was excited), popped it in the DVD player and sat back and watched. I barely left the couch for the next 3 days. I can honnestly say I fell in love with the show within the first minute of watching Serenity. That opening action sequence made me go "Wow!" And then the moment where Mal's standing and watching the Alliance ships land... Yeah, that did it for me. Made me love and understand Serenity all the more.

Everyone has their moment love at first sight or it just sneaks up on ya before ya know it sons of katie elder, dirty dozen, planet of the apes, top gun, and 007 have to go in the closet. You just have eyes for firefly. I liked the pilot show serenity the scene where their galluping on horseback as cowboys back to the spaceship or gettaway car. I thought this is cool. But in the episode Ariel when Jayne is figured out to be a double crosser and old Mal is ready to let him get sucked out the ship I knew their was no denying it anymore this is the one. I got totally addicted to it like a dirty married woman when Shepherd Derrial Book shoots out a kneecap like a ninja assassin in the episode war stories. I remember as a little boy how cool the western Alias Smith and Jones was firefly reminds of it ironic both were short lived. I guess its a western bladerunner.

I'm a late comer to this show too. First saw the movie, then the series. I saw the Serenity movie last October, and the moment that really hooked me was when Mal was telling a worried Simon that he was taking River under his protection and that if anything happens to her, "I will get very choked up. Honestly, there could be tears." The way he delivered it was just so darned funny.

The pilot episode was my first.Oddly enough I sat down one friday and and turned on the boob tube and the channel happened to be set to fox and the rest is history.The precise moment I fell in love with the show was just before Jayne interrogates Dobson.The captain tells Jayne to just scare him and Jayne replies "pain is scary".Perfection!

Serenity. (the movie)

I never watched Firefly when it was on. I am single and in my 20's. Last place I was going to be on a Friday night was at home. Any other night of the week and I would have been hooked.

The difinitive moment in the pilot was when Mal shoots the undercover FED as soon as he walks on board.

The second I fell in love with the show was in the Train Job. When Mal walked down the stairs with Kaylee, saw Jayne slumped there. Kaylee said about trying to move him to the infirmary, but he was just heavy. Mal's reaction of just shrugging and stepping over Jayne made me love the show and I realised then that I'd never miss an episode.

I came into the 'Verse all backwards, never seeing an episode of Firefly before seeing the BDM, but after watching the film, I knew I had to see the series, and there were so many moments in "Serenity" (the pilot) that set their hooks in, but the clincher had to be at the end when Mal, Jayne, and Zoe return from dealing with Patience, and Mal walks onto the ship, shoots Dobson in the face, and tosses the body overboard.

Or it could have been the very end of the episode, with the whole dialog between Simon and Mal - just because I know what it's like to only have one thing in life going right, but that one thing is the most important one.

Had seen Serenity once, half-asleep and unimpressed.

Months afterward, I had a disc of all 14 eps shoved at me by a friend, insisting I 'had to' watch them.

Popped in the pilot at some point just to see what the brouhaha was about. Stayed tuned because of the awesome dialog("The only fluid I see here is the puddle of piss who won't pay us our fee!". Oh, people don't talk like that? Hear that silence? Yeah, that's me caring)

Magic moment? Kaylee getting shot. I've elaborated elsewhere, but the fact is, when you've been praying for something to happen and it does.... well, it grabs you. But that entire scene was perfect, from Mal's ruthlessness to Simon's COMPLETE checkmating of him on the spot.

By the end of Simon's awesome monologue about River, I was hooked.

Mind you, by the standards of the documentary I saw on y'all, I'm no Browncoat(you are all CRAZY. I hope you realize that.... ), but I did become a big fan.

If there's no Serenity II, I will get very choked up. There may even be tears.

Originally I watched Firefly as FOX aired the episodes. I think the moment that really did it for me was in "Our Mrs. Reynolds", when Mal gives Kaylee a kiss of approval. After that, I knew I couldn't stay away.

I knew I'd get hooked on Firefly after the scene in the pilot when Mal blew away Dobson without blinking or breaking stride.

I fell in love with Firefly during the last flashback scene in "Out of Gas", when Mal gazed upon Serenity for the first time...it was pure magic.

Unfortunately, I began my journey long after the show had been canceled, having never heard of it before. I saw a trailer for the movie and being a sci-fi buff, was instantly intrigued.

Looking back, I remember reading a review by someone, critical of the movie, after I had already seen it the first time, and their chief complaint was that they were lost in the -exposition to dream to escape to hologram- portion of the movie. I.E. Right from the start. I remember wondering how a moron could become a film critic so easily. What, couldn't they see the screen past their popcorn? He went on to state that it was probably that only fans of the show could figure out what was going on. Which, was quite the opposite of where I was coming from.

In any event, I think the love affair was already beginning, just from that opening sequence and how it flowed. Then I was introduced to the cast and their interaction and I was hooked.

When I fell in love with the show itself was about half way through the pilot, after I bought the DVD set, when I realized that it was everything the movie was and then some. For I had already been hooked by that. It was the first movie I actually paid to go see more than twice, rather than simply waiting for video release, since Empire Strikes Back, when I was like eight and before video releases were common.

I have two moments.

"Whoa...good ____" and "I'll/We'll be in my bunk".

I love when a series cracks a joke, and then references that joke later. It makes you feel like you're in on the joke. Like you're one of the crew.

When a show can pull that off successfully, you know you have something special.

I lied, though. I have three moments. The third is actually the first, and that's when I saw Kaylee for the first time.

We saw the movie first -- on DVD -- we don't have cable where we live and almost never watch TV anyway. But I'd seen the trailer for "Serenity" and was intrigued, missed it in the theater, kept looking for it to come out on DVD and when it did, we rented it.

I think I was pretty well hooked by the point where Mal tells his crew "we may experience some turbulence, and then explode". Hooked enough, anyway, to want to watch the series.

And it just so happened right about then Amazon had a special on the series. We're not in the habit of buying boxed sets of DVDs but I figured the price was right and we could probably make back most of it by reselling the set after watching it, if we didn't want to keep it.

Probably around the point in the pilot where Mal unpacks River, Simon says "She's my sister", and Mal says, "Huh" was where I began to think we weren't going to resell those DVDs.

I wasn't really in love yet. I think the pilot is amazingly good, but I didn't decide that until the second viewing; the first time I merely liked it a lot. The next couple episodes are not my favorites. But then we got to "Our Mrs Reynolds"... and the moment where Mal passes out and Saffron says "Goodnight, sweetie"... hey, I'm a sucker for surprises like that. Reminded me of several decades back, seeing the Star Trek episode "The Enterprise Incident". And of "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels".

Then "Jaynestown", which was good, but "Out of Gas", I think, was what really did it for me. That episode is just so wonderfully constructed. Others have mentioned the teaser where Mal falls bleeding, but it just goes on from there, the way they integrate the three different time periods -- beautiful, beautiful segues from one to the other. The Jayne recruiting scene I consider one of the very funniest scenes in the series. Just a great episode -- and followed immediately by another great one, "Ariel". Jayne's interesting in that episode, and the scene with Jayne and Mal at the end is wonderful, but what really intrigued me was Simon's character, as he coolly jumps with both feet into the role of criminal mastermind (motivated by the need to help River, of course). And the scene where he steps in to save a patient... magnificently written.

It was hard to get any more impressed than that, but maybe "Objects in Space" did it. Creepy episode, not easy to watch, but unlike any TV episode I've ever seen; and when the "disembodied" River starts talking... beautiful.

For me it has to be Train Job since that is my first ep when aired on Fox. A combination of Niska's Tiffany lamp (I have always wanted a Tiffany lamp)Zoe telling Mal he has a problem with his brain being missung, Jayne talking about the chain of command. But truly in love was when Mal says, "don't believ he does." Then later kicks crow in the engine and show our Captain is tough too.

I was sleeping on the couch when my brother was watching Firefly. I woke up seeing Saffron's beautiful face on the big screen and I was in love. I didn't care what he was watching. I had to see more of her.

I was disappointed that she wasn't on every episode, but I got a hell of a great show out of the deal anyhow.

Well. I watched the serenety movie prior to the series. Wasnt really interested in the show before, I mean I heard about it, but when I saw the title...from the creator of buffy and angel...i was sceptical, cause i think that buffy is total crap. Then I whatched the movie and I sad -> i must see the show from the begining. The first moment in the movie was the actual first scene of the serenetys landing when Mal announced the crashing on the planet. But in the actual show the scene when Mal pushed Crow into the engine is very strong.

Being that I live in Sweden, I never got to catch Firefly on TV—in fact, I barely knew anything about it when my older brother suggested we rent Serenity.

To me, the movie started out so-so. Mal seemed a bit too much of a Han Solo clone to be all that interesting, and I felt like I was missing out on a lot of the story since I hadn't seen Firefly on TV. In the second half of the movie, though, that suddenly changed. When Serenity sneaked through the Reaver fleet and blasted its way out of the debris field, meeting the Alliance war machine head-on, I knew this was something unique.

I ended up buying the series, knowing that I would love it. There are so many moments that I remember that just make Firefly so awesome in my eyes, but it all started with that epic space battle (or escapade, from Serenity's point of view). I haven't gotten through all of the series yet (I'm watching one episode per week to prolong the enjoyment), but I was hooked on it after the very first episode.

Awesome thread, by the way. It inspired me to register.

The opening scene. The writing, acting, and cinematogrophy of it all. The "Joss-ness" of it all. "Because we are so very pretty." Taking the badge from the dead officer. Mal rallying the troops, and the crushing look on his face when he sees that the sound of those engines are not friendlies. And finally, the weak cowardly soldier getting hit in the chest, just barely missing our protagonist. It was poetic and I don't think I have seen many scenes that could hold a flame to it.

That or the undying devotion of all of the fans of the series. Just hearing about the deovted following the cancelled show aquired was enough to make me feel a sense of pride. I didn't have anything to do with it, but I respected it.

I hadn't watched TV since Babylon 5 ended in '98, but I'd watched Seasons 2 & 3 of Buffy, and loved 'em.

I'd only heard a radio spot for Firefly when it first aired, which went...

When the trailer for Serenity hit the 'Net in April '05, it triggered some'n ("Hey! Isn't that...?), so I went poking around for more info, and found a site that had the episodes archived in RealPlayer, and downloaded the first four hours worth. (Good that I'd looked to see what the correct order was, because the site had 'em in Fox order!)

It wasn't long before I was running to Amoeba < http://www.amoeba.com> to get the DVDs!

Funny thing — the first disc wouldn't run on my iMac (unless I played another Fox DVD first, apparently) — but I didn't return the set right away because those were the same four hours I'd already downloaded!

Having said all that, the moment that made me fall in love with the show? That's easy. Three words...

"Mine's the nicest!"

I can think of the exact moment for BUFFY (the introduction of Willow and Xander, and Buffy's line at the end when she tricked Luke the vamp into thinking it was daylight when she busted the window "It's in about nine hours, Moron." in ep.1, "Welcome to the Hellmouth" and "The Harvest") and ANGEL (I think it was when Angel said "When nothing else matters, all that matters is what you do" in "Epiphany"), but I can not for the life of me think of "the" moment for FIREFLY. Except when I got them on DVD and was finally able to see all eps in the order Joss intended. Does that count? 'Cuz by then, I was in love!!

I agree GENI, when Mal draws his pistol & shoots Dobson in the head without breaking his stride, I was hooked. Jean Luc would have talked to and tried to reason with Dobson. Mal saw that Dobson needed killin' and thats what he gave him.

Well I saw the BDM before I saw the show so the moment it hooked me was when Wash had his little speech with his beloved dinos. That lovely moment was immediatly followed by the realization that he (in the Firefly timeline) had a short time to live.

I too saw the BDM before I saw the series. I fell in love with the series as soon as I saw the movie preview with the Wash & Mal exchange:

Wash: This could get interesting
Mal: Define interesting.
Wash: Oh God, oh God, we're all gonna die?
Mal into the comm: This is the captain. We have a little problem with our entry sequence, so we may experience some slight turbulence and then... explode.

And that was it. Love. I went out and bought the series DVD as soon as I got out of the cinema. Thank the stars I saw it on DVD where the episodes are in order and none are excluded.

of course with no knitting talents such things may be difficult to come by.

Now, there wasn't one moment that made me fall in love with the show. I can name many many moments from every episode that keep me in love with the show. So in love with it that even when they *killed* off Wash I continued to stick by it. Though everytime I watch the movie I can't help asking WHY!! WHY DID THEY KILL HIM?!?!?! At which point someone tells me to shut up..
I especially love the part in Our Mrs...when Mal wakes up from the good night kiss and it comes to the topic of kissing and Book says o so there was kissing...isn't that SPECIAL Omg I laughed So hard!

(I remember watching the space channel on TV years ago and they were interviewing this chick who was wearing Jaynes hat. At the time I had no idea who Jayne was or what the show they were talking about entailed but for some reason that memory stuck with me *creepy*. When I first saw that hat I thought it was the prettiest hat in the 'verse)

While not a "hook" in and of itself, i'm kinda surprised nobody's mentioned Mal takin a leak in the pilot.. it struck me at that point that this was NOT the clean, perfect, orderly universe of bland, conventional "sci-fi" snorefests.

Caught it the first time around, and Crow through the engine was prettymuch it for me, that and watching Mal and Inara go rounds when everybody BUT them knows exactly what the deal is.... having JUST gone through that stage and soon after carried it to the logical conclusion with the soon to be wife.

The very first time I saw it. For the first few minutes I thought Mal was too pretty and I was only half-watching. Then the situation took a strange but completely realistic turn, the acting got serious, and I was hooked.

There are probably a few - as it seems there are for everyone, but for me, when Simon tries to help River when she comes out of the cryo box shaking and screaming and he says, "It's okay, I'm here."

Yup, that clinched it for me ... then, Simon's speech explaining what happened and River sticking her tongue out at him when he gives her a smoother.

It was all downhill from there!

Well, considering I saw Serenity first, the thing that really made me say, "Whoah. This is something awesome," was when the Agent hits Mal in the back when they're fighting in Mr Universe's place. That turning point between thinking, "Holy crap, is EVERYONE going to die?!" to "Holy crap, everyone is NOT going to die! Huzzah!"

I mean, it was the first science fiction movie that actually had me rooting for the good guys. And one of the only movies in a long time that had me caring about the main characters.

After leaving the theatre I decided that I needed to buy Firefly right away. And then when I started watching the very first episode I was swept away.

I have no idea how I found out about Firefly.
I remember wanting the Serenity DVD. I don't know why. I hadn't seen the series, probably didn't know there was one.
My natural response to when were you hooked is the opening crew sequence of Serenity - by the time we were down in the cargo bay, it was just that - WE. I had been sailing with them for years.

But the truth came slightly sooner. When Doctor wassface says 'I don't have a sword' as the Operative pulls his out. I remember my brain switching on shouting Yes Yes YES at me.

I bought Firefly on Jan 2nd 2007, and am gently but firmly making everyone I know watch it. No one has yet been disappointed. Myself, I have watched it at least 6 times in from start to finish, and am constantly dipping into it.

It was either Mals 'Hueh' at seeing River or Kaylees new belly button or possibly the contraband strawberries that put the smug grin on my face saying 'aren't I the cool one for finding this hidden gem'.

I first saw Serenity the movie, and I thought it was pretty good, but not brilliant, more than likely because I didn't know the back story, so Books death and the rescue mission to save Inara meant nothing to me.
Coincidentally enough a friend lent me the first 2 discs of the boxed set a few days later, and I watched them but I accidentally started with train job first. I thought it was good until I saw Safe and River's beautiful "you found me broken" speech, its at that point I realized that it was an unconventional and very original show. I only watched the pilot after Jaynestown, thats when it all fell into place. I devoured the other episodes, my favourites being Out of Gas, Ariel, and Objects.
I almost cried after Objects, River offering to leave, the end of the series...
Now I want to see the movie again, properly.

I went over to a mates house ages ago and he had the box set, so i got to start with the pilot which i am so thankful of, seeing the show in order from first to last was brilliant. But the part that made me fall in love was in the pilot, where Mal gets told that there won't be any back up coming, and also the part straight after that, it's years later, and they're taking supplies from that abandoned ship and the alliance spots them, so they release the cry baby. SUCKED IN I TELL YOU!

I was late to the party so it was River climbing to the ceiling that got me to buy the dvd's, but after that what hooked me on the show was going from a BEAUTIFUL spacewalk sequence to "Curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal!" That combination was all it took!

My brother got the series for my mom's birthday and since my mom and sister quickly got hooked, they made me watch the first one. I'm not really one for shooting and violence so I was kinda skeptical. But during the first episode, I loved the part where the Mal tells Simon that Kaylee is dead and he goes running, then Kaylee's cute little wave and the rest of them cracking up. It was a brilliant move by the captain to test the doctor's character and it was just hilarious.

So then I fell in love with each of the characters as they were developed and formed this little family. Jayne was my least favorite character until Jaynestown and then I fell in love with him too. Jayne & Mal's talk at the end was the point at which I fell utterly in love with the whole thing and I watched the rest of the episodes within the matter of a day.

I bought Serenity the next day and loved it. I really want to see more of Mal and Inara's romance. I really want to see more episodes and another movie.

I watched Firefly for the first time totally by accident about 2 weeks before Serenity came out in the UK. I was channel-hopping and it was on the Sci-Fi channel, and I thought "ooh, that's a Joss Whedon show" and decided to watch after being a Buffy and Angel fan from the start.

The episode I caught was Heart of Gold and I think I decided to order the boxset when Rance Burgess' expensive Alliance-looking gun ran out of batteries. I knew it was my kind of my show!

First post, first read of the forum, too.
Here we go:

I remember reading a list of quotes people had put together on some other film list, and thought, whatever this show is, I've got to see it. The writing looks fab.
Previously I've been into all kindsa things, from Xena to DS9, old Battlestar Galactica (as a kid, who weren't?) to Star Wars, new Doctor Who etc. I thought the ship for me were the Millenium Falcon. Naw, it's Serenity, LOL
I do have a thing for Aston Martins (should throw that in there), and for me a Firefly is a DB6 in space, LOL

I'm in Hong Kong so we have hee-haw chance of seeing it on tele. I BT'd the pilot from the net and after that went straight out and bought the boxed set.

Mal shooting the Fed without appearing to check: I'm sold.
"We're too pretty to die": I'm sold.
"We've done the impossible, and that makes us mighty": I'm sold.

And pretty much about every other line that comes up, LOL
My favourite has to be some of the Chinese. It's hard to catch sometimes cos the delivery in't so precise at times (ahem) and it's Mandarin, which was never my strong suit, but imagine the characters in your head and you've got it, LOL
My favourite has to be the exploding elephant shit, or perhaps the frog-humping bum, LOL

And that's me done. Sorry it were so long. So many fab moments. Still not seen "Objects in Space" or the film ~ if I actually watch the last episode, then it's really over! If I never watch it, it's never finished. If you see what I mean...

The moment I was hooked was the moment Mal lost anything and everything. I knew it wasn't going to be a 'we're the main characters, so we unexplainably always rule you' kind of show at that point. I like it when the heroes in a book or show get kicked. Shows you they're human. The shock, horror, realization, and despair on Mal's face just did it for me. And if that hadn't been enough to hook me, Eavesdown Docks would have finished the job.

Off the top of my head, the first time I heard River speak made me fall in love with the show. There's so many other reasons that I fell in love with it, but defenitely everything about River is one of the main reasons.

Hi all, first post and very late to the party. I saw the film first, really liked it, but was there a backstory to these guys...? That was a while ago. Finally got round to buying "Firefly" last weekend, watched the last episode last night (sob) and now I'm in love....

I've only seen the episodes once (will be starting again tonight), but the deep hook for me was Kaylee standing outside Serenity with her parasol looking for passengers. And then Shepherd Book turns up and I just thought, this is going to be such a great ensemble piece.

Also the part where we find out what Inara does and its more respectable than everyone else - I just loved that.

My other (shallow) reason is that I'm utterly smitten with Mal, but then I gather I'm not alone there.

I absolutely fell in love when I saw the crew being interrogated by the Alliance in Bushwacked. What an amazing and hilarious scene! I knew from the other episodes that Firefly was great but that part of Bushwacked just sealed the deal for me. Instead of being just hooked...I was REALLY hooked.

This is a bit off but hey, i missed the series all the way up to when the ads for serenity were shown on the tv, anyway i watch a movie review of serenity and i was pretty much hooked from the clips of the movie they showed. I needed to see this movie and the show that goes with it, which i can't believe i could of missed being a Joss Whedon fan.

So when i watched the series at the moment Mal looks over serenity valley and is so crushed by what he sees that he doesn't notice that Bendez dies, i was completely taken in. I thought, this guys is so overwhelmed. How will he go on? So i tuned in every week and saw the movie to see how his man carries on.

The year is 2006, never heard of Firefly or Serenity, but Buffy and Angel fan. Goes to the lokal videorent place. Browses. Peter Jackson's King Kong no decision really, Lotr fan long time. Then I see a cover, hmm, young girl herostance, written by the buffydude, well no decision either really. I go home and watch King Kong, god I was bored, 3 hours bored.
Serenity goes into the dvdplayer, opening sekvens ,I like, title screen, zoom out to Serenity, I go oh it is a spaceship, because I didnt know. 7 min and I loved the movie already. The defineing moment was when River steps down from the boxes, Mal says "You know your role in this, little one?" , River retorts "Do you?" fell in love especially in River and the 'verse.
Then in dvd-extras I learned about Firefly. Bought it, love it.
And hope so much, that Serenity will break atmo again soon, keep fighting everyone.

I was introduced when I visited my best friend over Christmas and her family was in the middle of the series. I was intrigued with "Ariel" but what got me was "Jaynestown"- I giggled when Kaylee said "everywhere I go, his eyes keep following me"; literally rolled on the floor when the Hero of Canton was sung; but the line that sealed it was "We gotta go the crappy town where I'm a hero!" I LOVE/LOVED WASH from the get-go.

How did I come across the Big Damn Movie? Advance publicity, the story about the fans who wouldn't let the show die, and I saw the trailers and thought "that looks like my kind of story.." And I've been a fan of another show called "Green Wing" for a long time and all my fellow fans there know Joss Whedon is god - so when I found it was one of his, the omens were good that I'd like it:-)

So glad to see that there are more new fans joining, maybe if there are enough of us and we keep it going then one day we might get more...we can dream...

Being a huge sci-fi fan I never saw firefly while it was on network tv. My first time I saw anything relating to the "verse" was in a movie previw for Serenity. When I saw the movie preview, I thought "that looks interesting" so I went out and bought the DVD's. After I saw the Pilot, I was holy *&^*&* how did I not know about this show. I believe it is one of the biggest mistakes of a canceled sci-fi show in history. One of the few truly original sci-fi shows in history.

For me, it was the BDM. I had totally missed the Firefly series on TV, remember seeing the TV commercials for 'Serenity' but didn't go see it. I know, I feel horrible!
However, I decided to rent Serenity on DVD when it first came out at Blockbuster. Watched it once and then I was hooked! I think what first made me fall in love with this show was the whitty writing and incredibly great acting. I really liked Mal's character within seconds of seeing him on screen the first time! I could just tell that this group was special.
Needless to say, I really liked the movie, all the characters, and HAD to know more about this 'verse'!
I went straight out and bought the BDM and Firefly series on DVD and was hooked forever!
So, I have to say that there was no single scene or line that made me fall in love with this 'verse', it is the 'whole' that I love and I love EVERYTHING about it!

Sadly I am a late Browncoat, because we do't get Fox tv here in SA and the movie was never officially released at the cinema. They advertised it and then it never came on T.T

But I remember working on my PC while watching TV and the BDM was the 8 pm movie. I was the first movie in a long time which I've actually watched without doing something else, it just looked so good.

The "Was that my primary buffer panel? Well, it did look like it." And I was had, then with Jayne and his grenades and after that the "Shinet, lets be bad guys!" And I was hooked!

I don't remember an exact point when I fell in love. It was gradual I suppose. I read a quote from someone (Tim Minear I think) where it said It gets under your skin. That was so true for me.

One thing I have to admit to though is that Firefly is the only show that can ever make me cry from sheer love and because of it's beauty.

This might be cheating a bit but I actually found out about the movie before I even knew there was a series.

I work at a hotel and had finished watching something on HBO... I remember hearing some girl screaming and by the time I got over to the tv the serenity logo was showing up.

The moment that got me was when Mal made his announcement about turbulence and then... exploding! I remember seeing him on tv before and that line just made me laugh and go, "I really want to watch this movie!"
I wanted to watch it so much that turned the tv off right then... I didn't want to watch part of it only to be interrupted by work. I went to Walmart later that week and bought the movie.
Then of course I started searching the net for Serenity props... I'm a huge prop builder/collector... and found out about the series. Just happened by it in target one night, I figured it would've been more expensive. One of the best purchases I have ever made!!!!
I'm only a little over halfway finished with firefly. I watched War Stories last night. I guess I'm taking my time with it because when I finish that... there may not be any more. I HOPE there is though! We're obviously causing a little stir due to the uber shiny Collector's edition comming out.
I absolutely LOVE this show! Kinda glad I didn't see Fox's butchering of it... much better to see it all in neat and tidy order.

I watched the show out of order and enjoyed every episode, but the moment that sticks out in my mind is from 'War Stories' when Zoe hands over Mal's ear to the Dr and announces they are going to get the captain. Jayne's reply, looking at the ear "what are you going to do? Clone him?'

What was the first moment that had me fall in love with FF?

Well since I didn’t see the series when it first aired and I didn’t see the BDM until it came out on dvd I can’t say that any of this hooked me to the show. I didn’t see the series played out of order and Serenity was good, very good in fact but if it had been all there was I could have been happy and never looked back.

It wasn’t until we rented the dvd series and watched the pilot eps. I believe it was the scene where Kaylee takes the long desiring look at the strawberry then bites it. That had to be the sexiest thing I’d seen on tv in a long time and it lead me to believe that there was truly something intelligent about the writing. My wife looked at me and said “ Must be a MAN thing and laughed. She was right…lol. Here was a show smart enough to know not to take itself to serious. I like that. After that I was becoming hooked even more.

2) When Kaylee was shot by Dobson ( Hell no they can’t kill this pretty girl off, I said)
3) When Mal tells Simon that “Kaylee’s dead” then it turns out that he was only pulling the docs leg.(hilarious)
4) When Jayne tells Mal “Pain is scary.”(classic)
and finally
5) the smooth ending

Yep, after that I could tell that all my coats in the closet were turning a brownish color.

Various moments from the pilot. I remember thinking Wash's dinosaurs were a cute touch and it struck me as typical off-the-wall Whedonesque humour I remembered from years of watching Buffy, but it was probably "Kaylee's dead!" - it was an important moment in making you warm to Mal (that'd he'd have a laugh with his crew in a serious situation, and that he'd mess with Simon's head). Also, the moment where Inara lays her hand on Book's head in sympathy at his grief over his part in Dobson's apparent death - it was a beautifully played (and subtle) character moment. From then on, the complexities of the BDHs really intrigued me and pulled me into the series.

Pilot episode, shoot out with Patience. When she says, "Don't take another step!" and then Mal shoots the horse and it falls on her... I was just awed by his no-nonsense attitude and his simultaneous devotion to his "family." Not to mention all the funny jokes!

But I didn't really fall in love until a whole day after watching the pilot, when I realized I'd been thinking about it all day, and how believable the setting was, and how well-written and acted the characters were. And how epic it was for a TV show... I think I was sitting in class when I thought, "That show is gonna be my drug from now on..."

My cartridge fell out of my gun...

Bushwacked. When Serenity gets boarded by the Alliance and Simon & River are forced to suit up and and hide on the ship's hull to evade being captured, there is this scene, when the frame zooms out from the dining area to the outside of the ship. Simon is obviously uncomfortable. At some point he glances at River for some reason, and the camera switches to her, all smiling and fascinated... And then we get to see what she's looking at.

In all it's so very infinite blackness and glory.

The music plays a key role in making this very moment a magic one, as does the low thunder-ish sound they added to it during the «space panorama» shot, which gives it a sheer sense of imensity. Wonder. No to mention beautiful acting and camera work.

The cockpit scene in the movie. I was in love from the second I realized it was FUNNY sci fi. Then I watched the bonus material and said "you mean there's MORE?!!!".

OK, not much more, but better than nothing!

Just realised that I haven't actually mentioned my moment... well it was the sights, sounds, and smells of Eavesdown Docks. The shipping containers used as makeshift housing along with the hustle and bustle really made it feel like a real place rather than a set.

It of reminded me of a couple of months previous to my introduction to Firefly, when Bristol (UK) bus station was being rebuilt. The facilities were temporarily housed in Portakabins, and kind of had a "future frontier" feel.

Being a late discoverer, I was able to watch the shows in order, and I have to say that after the pilot, I was all in. In fact, I believe I watched all of Season One in one uninterrupted marathon. But what cemented it for me was Jaynestown.

I'm watching Jaynestown and thinking, this is the funniest tv episode I've ever seen. But then at the end, after they leave Canton, we get brief vignettes of the characters that are not funny, but acutely, poignantly HUMAN. Finally, the last bit with Jayne and Mal in the cargo hold--"Just don't make no sense..."--killed me.

One aside here, because of the character's personality, I don't think Baldwin gets enough credit for his vulnerable moments on the show, where he absolutely shines.

The first time I saw the show on fux (train job, stupid b@stards at fux... *grumbles*) anyway... The bit between Mal, Zoe, and Jayen, playing chinese checkers... and then that whole, "You know... your coats kinda a... brownish color..." and then the bar fight... all these little moments got me thinking, "HERES something you don't see everyday... friendly, comedic banter between friends switching almost instantly to angst over a lsot war, into anger and a big ol' brawl..." and who could forget Jaynes line, once he finally enters the fight, and the malcontent in the bar draws his sidearm... "Hey now... them's ain't cosherized rules..." All in all, I fell in love within the first few minutes, but what really REALLY got me was them actually returning the medicine and the "Crow through engine bit" I was all... did I REALLY just see one of our "heros" put a man through an interspace engine!? My dad, being as cool as he is, started watching the series with me after he got the boxed set for me for christmas a few years back... and I got him into Firefly through the Pilot... Mal and Bendis' speach... the "this land bit" and my dad was hooked!

I hate to admit it, but I never caught the show on Fox. I, probably like many others, was introduced to the series by seeing "Serenity". It didn't take long for me to get sucked into the movie, and when it was over, I wanted more. So, I bought the DVD series. 'Nuff said.
By the way, first of many posts here.

Mal introducing Inara to Shepard just to see what he'd do was great. Inara later connecting with Shepard was great too. But overall, Mal absolutely rocks in the pilot. He makes you laugh, he makes you care and most of all he makes you love him and therefore you automatically love what he loves, ie, the ship and the crew.

Special mention for Kaylee and the strawberry.

"That's Chinese for petty"

The first episode I ever saw was Trash, which was not ideal, as it opens with naked Mal (okay for some folk, but not my cup of tea), followed by the scene with Mal, Yo-Saff-Bridge, and Monty, which is quite mistifying if you don't know the backstory.

But it soon got to that fantastic bit of dialog between Mal and Inara in her shuttle - what great chemistry. And the above line was the absolute clincher. I was hooked.

Oh, my god yes!

The first thing I saw that wasn't a commercial for it was The Train Job when SciFi began airing the series to promote the BDM. And I thought, hey, this is pretty amusing, I think I'll keep watching. I missed it for a couple weeks, coming in at the end of Shindig I think, but I didn't really get to see much of the ending. But then I watched the next week, caught the whole episode from the beginning for a change and...

...like you said, "Sir, I'm your wife"

Nathan's expression is just utterly priceless in that scene.

Or should say, expressions, because he actually reacts a second time on top of the first and that's the one that had me laughing. By the end of the episode, I was delighted with the thing (am I the only person who on the first viewing did not realize Saffron was a total fraud until she gave Mal the Goodnight Kiss? Took me by surprise! And to follow that with the scene with Inara was just awesomeness "You're good!" "So are you!" "Who ARE you?" "Malcolm Reynolds' widow!" *punch!*), and so of course I was like "OK. I am SO buying this on DVD", and did. Our Mrs. Reynolds holds a special place in my heart because of that. :D And then of course this was compounded by the statue scene in Jaynestown (with them all looking in perplexed amusement and confusion at it), which was maybe the next or second-next episode I saw, I could almost swear it. I was a haphazzard watcher at first. :P

Oh and of course, I fell back in love all over again (or is it just deeper, I wonder?) after seeing the BDM for the first time in theaters, having gone into it completely unspoiled and having seen all or most the series by then (and thus, attached to the characters quite a bit). Killing you know who off was just such a ballsy, genius move - the way it tricked my mind into completely forgetting I was watching a movie (thus scaring the bejezus out of me, because I honestly forgot to remember certain characters "obviously" couldn't die, because, well, who expected him to!?)... well, it still has me in mild awe to this day, because the whole thing was just heightened by it so MUCH. I came out just with this feeling of having one of the most incredible experiences of my entire movie-goig life. LOVE, baby. It's called love.

...but the first moment, definitely Our Mrs. Reynolds.

i saw the BDM before i had even heard of the series, so my moment was:

Operative "...freeze frame."

I must have been holding my breath through that ENTIRE escape scene. I knew it was a Joss Whedon...(LOVE Buffy and Angel) but it still didnt prepare me for the power of that opening sequence. I could not believe what i had just seen.

I was standing (or sitting on my couch actually) before some of the greatest storytelling EVER.

i watched it 2 more times that day and found out it was a series from the special features...and well, the rest is history.

yes...it was immediate. fell real hard.

And argues it beautifully, I might add). There is a local film critic whose review of that new Satoshi Kon anime film (Paprika) I read recently. The moron actually claimed that the fact that the film was subtitled from the original Japanese was a negative aspect of, basically, the film. Nevermind that this is a decision of the company that's translating and distributing it and of the one local theatre that was showing it, and not the filmmaker who was merely working in his own native language, or that subs are usually the closest you'll get to watching a foreign-language film as originaly intended without learning the language it's in; what kind of idiot film critic is so uneducated that subtitles are a negative thing? I should note this idiot also gave the third Mission:Impossible movie a four out of five stars review. The only positive thing I can say about him is that with domestic animation or many live-action films, he's more open-minded, and his review of Serenity was reasonably balanced (he did say the lingo was a little overenthusiastically future-Western-slangy or whatever, but basically his review of it boiled down to "it's a fun, good little SF movie based on a cult hit TV series ala Star Trek, but grittier and earthier than Trek which is sorta refreshing, it's well made and better than most SF flicks are these days with characters almost improbably witty as most Joss Whedon characters are, but it's still a whole lot better if you're already a fan of the show it's based on" - as I recall, anyway, but that's definitely a huge, huge paraphrase there. Aside from the language complaint though, it was suprisingly fair, since it's definitely much better if you've gotten into the show first... which makes me think that he's probably seen the TV series and enjoyed it, whether or not he's a full-fledged Browncoat).

All of which is horribly convoluted and says about 16 different things at once, but yeah. IMO, sometimes the criteria for being a movie reviewer or "film critic" as some publications laughably call them, seems to basically be "can write a somewhat coherent English sentence, can complain really loud in text without resorting to caps locks of rage, and knows how to use spellcheck". It's rather telling that almost all of the places I actually read reviews and take them into consideration, are all websites or movie blogs, I suppose. Have you

Also, a REALLY big factor for me is the score.

I have never experienced a movie, much a less TV series, that paid so much attention to the music cues.

BTW - I found it funny that a lot of consumer reviews of the Serenity soundtrack complained that the "songs" were incomplete, or full of loud banging sound effects and they were screaming at the producers "dont you understand that we want to hear all the music."

BUT - that is ALL the music. Every single note on that soundtrack has a home in the movie.

Anyway...I really really appreciate the attention to every minute detail in the use of the score to heighten (already great) storytelling.

...from the "achingly beautiful, but broken" piano of River's theme in our BDM...

...to the arrogant but sexy guitar solo for any of our BDH's sudden entrances...

...the moaning strings in Out Of Gas that cut out when Mal falls through the frame...

...and that violin that so gently lifts right when River says, "I will be your bounty, Jubal Early".

So many many many more moments and each one more moving than the other...

it just makes my heart stop - i cant imagine the series or the movie without any of it.

If the ship is the 10th character and River's feet are the 11th...then the music must be the 12th.

Fell hard in love pretty quickly in the beginning of my experience...but so many things (music being a big one) that send me gasping...and wanting more...
