Imponderable Watercooler: Teach us all

Good teachers are astute observers of those they teach, and are really they themselves the quintessential students. It is when a teacher stops being a student that they stop being teachers. (I have teachers in my family.)
So I'll sit back and you can teach us all something. The pressure is on. Enlighten us.

firsties?
edit: Squee! Firsty dance!
Teach something? Uh. Ok. Something from each of my lifetime's professions.
Books:
1. If the author's name begins with Mc or Mac, it is properly filed at the beginning of the "M" section.
2. Never shelve the Koran below waist height. It is disrespectful.
Spa Management:
1. Never apply retinoids (vitamin A creams) during the day. Sunlight robs them of their usefulness.
Furniture:
1. "Italian leather furniture" is false advertising. Almost all of the worlds' leather furniture is made in Brazil or China, where leather prices are ridiculously low and labor cheap.

There's something I like about Mav getting firsties. But I just can't put my finger on it.

Whoa. Good filing system.
I almost forgot with all the brain searching and all. RIGHT ON MAVS! It'll be a while 'til the edgyness goes away (think I'm having a fit right now), but its so worth it. I highly suggest replacing the smoking minutes for active minutes. I found myself doing laps during the week inside Wal Mart due to the crappy weather. Seeing the progress time after time really builds the self esteem. Helped I got into PB when I did. Aside from being sick the last time every set of games gets easier and more fun happens all the time.
Hugs for ya Mavs.

Thanks, NV. I've had two big reinforcements on my "I no longer smoke" quest.
1. Support from my friends online
2. The smell of my coworker when she returned from her smoke break. She walked in the office today and I nearly gagged. I thought "Sh*t, is that what I smelled like?"

*I'm going to treat myself to some new perfume!

As of the end of last month I'm nine years free of the smoke. You'll be happy about it, as you said, but never ecstatic. It just becomes a way of life not to smoke after a while. Then at some point way down the road you look back and "Damn! I did it!...I should celebrate with a smoke..." After 20 years of no cocaine, I can still taste it and miss it. Whatcha gonna do? It's kind of like staring at a gold brick from Fort Knox that in arms' reach and you could steal if you wanted to. You want it real bad, but you just don't do it. And you're okay with that.

Teach you something ...hmmmm
Ok in honor of Magda...
The first recorded European contact with Australia was in March 1606, when Dutch explorer Willem Janszoon (c.1570 - 1630) charted the west coast of Cape York Peninsula, Queensland.
Britain decided to use its new outpost as a penal colony; the First Fleet of 11 ships carried about 1500 people—half of them convicts. The fleet arrived in Sydney Harbour on 26 January 1788, and it is on this day every year that Australia Day is celebrated.
In all, about 160 000 men and women were brought to Australia as convicts from 1788 until penal transportation ended in 1868. The convicts were joined by free immigrants from the early 1790s. The wool industry and the gold rushes of the 1850s provided an impetus for free settlers to come to Australia.

Not to take away honoring Magda, but teach us something YOU learned. Convey wisdom.
It isn't easy, really. And I'll take the pressure off by saying that I'm not insisting.
And transference of wisdom is something that depends on the situation. But I'm always open to learning something.

Yep, sadly, it is. I can tell when one of the smokers have been in a room before me even after they are long gone.

Good Morning, everyone!
The skies are incredibly dark here in MD - we are gonna get a Hella Thunderstorm soon...but my mood is pretty upbeat. Incredibly, my "No Smoking" stays in effect. I have stopped counting the hours smoke free. Weird, huh? I was really, really ready to quit. I just needed a mental kick in the butt to get over the emotional hurdle.
Thanks, Browncoat Friendlets!
For the first time in years, I like the way my hair smells. (And you know how I am about my hair...) I like not coughing in the morning. I like that my car doesn't smell like an ashtray.
I've had a few strong Nic fits, but nothing I haven't been able to talk myself down from. And Husband has been very supportive, smoking away from me, and keeping the carton in his truck. I am hoping my quitting will in turn help him quit.

Yeah for me it'd be a diet thing. MisterG and I are both on a diet and in one month he lost 11 pounds and I lost 4...freakin 4 pounds! So very unfair. Then I saw how brave and strong Mav and Kelkhil and NV were being and I thought...I can do that. Sweets are my downfall ( well that and pizza) so I have already given up pizza and now I am giving up sweets.

Doesn't that stink?
Husband can give up sodas & hotdogs and loses 10 lbs. I give up the same and the scale doesn't change.

Thanks for the positives, msg. Like I said previously, I was in a physical place where quitting would be easy(er)...I didn't go cold turkey after smoking 2 packs a day.

OK I have a weird language oriented ponder...
the word commitment
If you had been sitting around with a group of friends and one casually suggests " We should get together. You could come over the next night to watch a ball game" and you say " sure that'd be fun " Would you say you'd made a commitment to be there??

Enough to the point that I'd tell the person if something else came up and I wasn't going to be able to make it. That or maybe I'd be waiting for them to send me an email or call me to tell me when to come over.
NOTIFY: N | REPLY | REPLY WITH QUOTE | PERMALINK | TOP | HOME
The key words for me in that conversation is "could" and the selection of a specific night.
If it was "You could come over some night..." and you say "sure, sounds fun" that isn't a committment. That's a promise of future committment.
If it was "You should come over on Tuesday night" and you say "sure, sounds fun" its a committment.

Huh. I have a fear of commitment. I'm afraid someone's going to commit me. I just made that up in my head but I am equally sure it's very old joke. The reason I'm "huh"ing is that I'm not sure this has ever happened before or even can happen: I agree with Zeek and Mavs. At the same time. Huh. oops i did it again.

Between friends it sounds like a committed activity. But, it seems a little open ended. It seems if the person couldn't make it they should call at the very least.

Okay now that we're all clear about that, MsG, what did you do? What are you trying weasel out of? Or did someone stand you up? (*gets out bapping gloves*)

If there was a bunch of planning (bringing food/drinks, going somewhere, spending money, having heartfelt conversation) I can see that view.
Was the game that important?

Wahey, I'm back.
Seminar wasn't too bad. Didn't contribute anything since the majority of the two hours focused on the peasnatry before 1917 and all my reading was post 1917.
Now i am going to spend the weekend watching the Firefly weekend on Sci-Fi and attempt to do notes.
Great!

I would say yes, but it isnt a commitment written in stone, if you dont want to go you call and say - I am so sorry but I am unwell or something. Tell MrG to take a freaking chill pill!

Makes it easier on the research. Now you can speed read anything already discussed in the seminar. Have fun with FF on Sci Fi. (Wishes he had cable/sat)
ADD: Kinda figured it MSG. Not like you planned on meeting at a certain place and time, got a shirt cut for the occasion, and had your hair trimmed or anything. (Kicks the word committment across the yard. Stupid dog runs off with it and gnaws wildly at its corners.) I'm gone for a bit. Seems these kids actually need to eat so I'm off to shop.

Hey all, gunna try to do some catch up here before running out to assault this gorgeous Friday (82° and sunny today, woot!).
Go Mavs and Kel! Keep it up! It's totally worth it. I was mostly a social smoker, but I did find myself really craving a cig when I was stressed. That's when I stumbled upon a little bit of something that I think everyone should know, smoker, ex-smoker, and non-smoker alike. What I realized is that when you're smoking, you breathe differently. You take in a very focused breath, hold it in, then blow it out purposefully. When I quit smoking, I found that if I just breathed like I was smoking, it really helped with the stress. I quit over 7 years ago, and I still use that breathing technique when I'm stressed.
MsG, good luck with the sugar thing. Last fall, hubby and I decided to give up corn syrup/high fructose corn syrup completely. It's crazy difficult -- corn syrup is in frickin everything -- but I'm glad we did it. It does mean basically giving up breakfast cereal and things like hamburger buns, but unlike when I've tried to give up all processed sugar, I don't feel deprived. We keep honey around for when I bake bread and for in tea and such, and I've switched to a sugar-free coffee syrup (hubby was already a Diet Coke man). And when we want a treat, we go with something that lists "sugar" instead of "corn syrup" on the label, like good chocolate or Ben&Jerry's. It is kind of shocking to me how many things corn syrup is in.
As far as commitment goes, I say as long as you call, your siblings will get over it. (Though I think my brother might kill you for missing a Jazz game, lol.)
Ok! Work! Optometrist appointment! Finish sewing my swimsuit so we can go to the beach tomorrow! Woo!

Well, on the bright side, at least MrG likes your sibs enough to give a damn. And hey, they're siblings. It's not like they're real people. Sibs crap on each other all the time and it's all good.

Happy, happy Friday! I love Fridays. I especially love Friday night, crawling into bed knowing that I don't have to wake up at any specific time the next morning. Friday nights are always about promise. The promise of sleeping in, of a fun weekend, of time away from work. Ah, Fridays.

If a specific day is mentioned, then you've made a commitment. If no specific day is mentioned, it's ("you should come over sometime"), it's a suggestion.

So annoyed. Can't send or receive which is really causing serious problems right now as I am in the midst of this big deal thing with the district office and email being down makes me look at best flaky and at worst irresponsible. Not that it can't be corrected once email is back, but there are some time critical issues and the delay is becoming a real problem...and of course today I accidentally left my cell at home so I'd have to leave my students alone and go about 1/2 block down to the faculty room to make phone calls...!@#$%!@#$%^!@#$%^!!!!!!
Anyway...he didn't go without me 'cause I said I'd have to go if he did 'cause I'd be the only one who wasn't there....we've sorted it out.
