As you all know, I've been a soldier stationed in Afghanistan for quite some time now. I immediately had to re-check my bags for my final flight, and after doing so, I made a beeline outside. I crossed the street and walked into the snow, the first I'd seen since January 2003, and stood at the base of the American Flag for a second before I finally became overwhelmed and fell to my knees. I grabbed a double handful of snow and rubbed it all over my face. When I stood up, I realized there were almost 20 other soldiers with me, all who had the same idea. Most of us didn't know each other at all, but for that moment, we were brothers who had been best of friends all our lives.
We decided to head on inside, and one young man, his name was Mike, was still overwhelmed with emotion and could not stand. Another soldier, a friend of his, went to lift Mike, and I took Mike's other arm. Mike smiled weakly and thanked us. Here's where it gets tough to even tell the story, and I hope Joss and Tim read this. . .

Mike's friend said, "You know the saying, Mikey. . .when you can't run anymore you crawl. . ." and before he could say anymore, I finished it for him. "And when you can't do that anymore, you find someone to carry you."

Mike and his buddy, and about half the guys who were standing there with us all smiled. We looked up at the flag and Mike said, "They didn't take the sky from us." Turns out they were all Browncoats, and they were home from Iraq for good.

Joss, Tim and all the rest of you. . .I don't know if you had any idea that what you created would be so powerful, and provide such inspiration for those of us who serve, but it does. Thank you.

And to all of you whom I've come to call my friends on this site, thank YOU. Because of your love and support, the 'bad guys' are unable to take the sky from ME.

" and Zoe finishes for him, it caught me thinking about this post, the show, my brother in arms, everything and I misted up again.

It moves me deeply to see the effort put into keeping this thread on the front page.

It IS very important to me that Joss sees this post. . .not for the sake of any SELF glorification, but so that when he is getting worn down from the tiresome process of making this movie. . .of keeping his creation alive. . .that he can see what an inspiration these characters and this story have truly been to everyone. . .particularly those of us who find ourselves in dire need of inspiration on a regular basis.

You know the saying. . ."If you can't run anymore, you crawl. . .and if you can't do that, you find someone to carry you."

You guys have done ALOT of carrying of me and my friends through this war. It really helps to be able to forget all the hell we see every day when I'm able to come here once or twice a day and talk to folks 'out in the world' who appreciate us soldiers, without regard for whether or not they agree with the job we're having to do.

I'd love for the "Big Three" to see this message. . .or maybe for the cast to see it. . .or someone. . .like I said, just so they know what they've been to everyone. Maybe we can carry THEM for a while during all of this.

My thought is that we should send This thread and the Blog of Statics' last big mission to either Mutant Enemy, or maybe get links up on more than one forum, or frop a link to this one at the offical boards, or anything a little more proactive. Getting the word out about things like this would go over big with all envolved with the BDM.

Time to lay off, guys! This is a nice story, but it doesn't have to be on the front page all the time. Who says Joss hasn't already read it? Or that he won't find it because it's not on the front page? This board is for Firefly fans both to read and write - just because Joss sometimes looks in on us doesn't give us the right to ram stories down his throat. He'll read whatever he finds interesting here whenever it suits him (just like anyone else here, really), and chances are he'll find it more interesting if we keep it as a fan-to-fan board - not a fan-to-artist one. Mail the story to Joss at ME, if you want to send it to him - we at fireflyfans.net have already read and enjoyed it. Unnatural bumping is never healthy for a message board, and this thread has received more than its fair share of it.

As far as I'm concerned I would keep bumping this thread till Static is home from the Middle-East for good. It also needs to be on the front page, cause many new people will at least look at it,(by the title alone) and its the kind of story that everyone should have the chance of reading. I respect your view Sasja that we shouldn't bump it to just get a response from Mr. Whendon. I think it should stay at the top of the threads cause it reminds us of a few things that are important. And it shows how special Firefly is to all those who honestly embrace it.

Let me 3rd (or 4th, or 95th) this sentiment. It's also a good way to let new fans who are just visiting the site know that Firefly has touched the "old timers" on the boards as much as it has touched them.

So, until Static is home safe with his Princess, I'll keep writing him Harem letters, sending CARE packages, and bumping this thread.

Whenever I feel like stopping. Times where quitting seems the best choice. My head hurts, my heart aches, my soul yearns for silence. Welcome home Static, I hope it's for good soon.

I found your story very moving and I'm sure Joss will too if he has a chance to read it. I've never served in the military (4F unfortunately) but I have the greatest respect for those that do.

I lost a friend of mine in Desert Storm years back and I think of him when I sit down to Firefly. He wanted to be an astronaut in his youth and I can't help but think how fond he would be of our favorite show.

Sean would have loved the show and the way it combines good entertainment with social commentary.

Here's a toast to our fellow browncoats away from home around the world.
