The Body still profoundly affects me, like I can't breathe for most of the ep.
But the shock of Buffy and Spike destroying an abandoned house with their lust has faded some; at first viewing it actually brought tears to my eyes, now it seems far away, even as I watch it.

Which moments in Buffy seem as fresh as ever, and which have had their moments, but not so much now?

Jenny in Giles's apartment, with the opera, and the following scene with Buffy and Willow getting the phone call still kills me every. single. time.

I can't think of one that has decreased in impact, but I'm sure it's out there... I remember being a whole lot more excited when I first watched Buffy kill Adam way back on TV all those years ago, but I was also in 4th grade and more easily impressed.

The Body for sure. It's so strong on all levels and then it has greater impact because it is so 'unBuffy' yet... still Buffy.

Plus for me HUSH. That did something quite incredible for TV. I've watched it several times and it still has impact. Would make a great film! It says so much without uttering a word. I also think The Gentlemen are brilliant iconic figures.

In terms of faded impact, I'd maybe go with a few season two episodes. At the time they seemed hard hitting, but then given where the show took some of those principle characters I'd say it diminished the overall significance.

As for season six I tried giving it another whirl a few weeks back, and save for 'Once more with Feeling' and 'Tabula Rasa' it is just below par. (Sorry)

Actually, while I find it entertaining enough, it sometimes feels like a 'filler season' with a few amazing standout eps. But it gets us to seven, my favourite!

I didn't know that. That is interesting. I just love four because it is entertaining, and funny. The funny part being what wins me over every time. I still crease up watching Xander and Harmony have that slow-mo fight. It is just about the funniest thing!

Upon first viewing I wanted Spike GONE, but on repeated viewing they do extract the maximum humour from his just 'being around' so well that it becomes so much apart of the season. The initiative while annoying to a large extent are perfect foils for Buffy to neuter with her brand of demon dealing.

Then there's HUSH, JONATHAN AND RESTLESS to name but a few :D

Willow saying goodbye to Oz
Spike seeing Buffy's hand and knowing she had to crawl out of her grave
Xander and the yellow crayon speech
Xander, Caleb and the eye popping grossness
Spike trying to rape Buffy
Cordelia's struggle after seeing Xander and Willow liplocked

I'm sure there are more I can't think of right now.

What has lost its impact?

Buffy jumping off the tower for Dawn
Buffy coming back to life
Spike getting his soul back
A lot of the Faith stuff (except for This Year's Girl and Who Are You?)

Events that have stayed powerful for me, in no particular order save the last one:

"Full of Grace" at the end of 'Becoming' - got to watch from 'Suprise' onwards for it to work though.
The hilltop speech in 'Amends'. The greatest Buffy moment ever.
The "This is the world we made" sequence in the 'The Wish'.
Angelus's speeches in 'Passion'. It does indeed rule us all.
Spike's immolation in 'Chosen'.
Drusilla's speech to Spike in 'Crush' (an odd one I know).
Tara/Giles refrain in 'Once More...'
"My whole life - I've never loved anything else." from 'Wild at Heart'.
A whole bunch more (trying to spread over the seasons) but no. 1 for never losing impact....
'Prophecy Girl' - when Buffy finds out she is going to die. "Read me the signs! Tell me my fortune!" The moment when SMG and the series came of age.

Most of the best moments from season two still have incredible impact, while a lot of season three, apart from the final two episodes, has lost its impact. I always thought, if there were an overrated season of Buffy, it would definitely be three...

There are a lot of other moments and events which I can't be bothered listing here but when it comes to episodes, 'Restless' is the one that never loses its impact no matter how many times you watch it. This is because you keep discovering new things on repeat viewings.

It's an episode Joss wrote in which demons steal the voices of everyone in Sunnydale. Thus, most of the episode is mimed, mouthed, whatever. There isn't dialogue.

Yes. I don't know about him being him in love with Joyce, I think it was more of a mother-father dynamic with himself and Joyce rather than him being madly in love with her but this scene will never lose its poignancy. Thing is, to the casual viewer who hasn't seen 'Band Candy' it will mean almost nothing but to see him sit down with it on (does he have a glass of Scotch at the time?) and stare into memory, it gets me everytime. Excellent choice, and thank you for bringing it to mind.

I've been re-watching Buffy for the umpteenth time (it always starts with.."I'll just watch _____ episode" and ends up with me watching all seven seasons)...and it just dawned on me how often Xander was actually the pivotal character in the finale. Screw Buffy. It's all about Xander. :D He does right. A lot.

The only thing that strikes me as losing it's impact is Oz leaving. I'm still not thrilled about the way he was written out in "Wild At Heart" (felt his actions in that ep. were completely out of character for him and Seth's exit should've been handled differently), but it doesn't bring me to tears anymore. Jenny's death never did, although I did feel bad for Giles and Willow.

The scene in the library from "Dopplegangland" when Buffy, Xander & Giles think Willow is dead. You still totally empathize even though you know perfectly well that she's fine. Somebody says (I think Buffy) that she was the best of all of them. Xander says she was way better than him. Giles agrees. Then she walks in and they think she's a vamp. Xander waves the cross in front of her, to no effect. They all hug her, overexcitedly. Completely weirded out, she asks if they all took a bunch of drugs. Buffy asks Giles to explain, which he can't. Xander says "Can you believe the Watcher's Council let this guy go?"

"Hush" (probably the creepiest episode of the show ever) was about a group of demons called The Gentlemen that could not speak, could only smile and show their metal teeth. They stole the voices of everyone in town (through magic) so they could float around and steal their hearts without a problem. They had these weird demony straight-jacketed things that went around and attacked people for them. It was never explained, I don't think, why they needed the hearts, but in the end it was Buffy's screaming (a magical box that contained the voices had been opened) that killed them, exploding their heads.

The overall theme of the episode was about communication. The gang had to find creative ways to communicate so they could figure out what was going on and stop it. Scary, funny,and fun. Great episode. Scared the crap out of me--and I was 21.

One moment from season 7 that no one really mentioned that I always liked was in "Conversations with Dead People" when Johnathan finally remembers his locker combination, which leads to this bit about how he thinks about the people he went to high school with and wonders what happened to them. Andrew dismisses this saying that high school was a horrible time and that no one cares about him. And then Johnathan replies, "Yeah, but I still care about them." and then continues to dig up the seal. You really get a sense that he's gotten past all that high school bullshit and that he's doing something good for his former classmates, even if he was never once accepted.

Two weekends ago, I attended a wedding. And to my surprise, there was a guy from my first school there at the wedding. This guy was in the grade that was two years ahead of us. And the guys in that grade were the worst guys you could imagine. It's as if all the bullies in one school was grouped in to one class. To be fair, this guy wasn't the worst amongst them. Maybe he was, but her never bothered me personally. Anyways, I go up to him after the service and at the reception, and we end up having a nice chat and was pleasant and all. I brought up high school and he admitted that he was an asshole then and that he got better. The point is, with high school past us, we were able to get past all that clique bullshit and just have a good time. I even made him bust a gut laughing.

I bring this up, because that real life incident reminded me of Johnathan's last good deed. In the quagmire that was season 7, this was one of my few favorite moments in the season, because it touches on something that happens to all of us in a subtle way. When we're living through it, high school is a tumultuous and torturous time. But after we've gotten past it and we've moved on with our lives, we do eventually look back on it and gain perspective and acceptance about our high school years. And we no longer look back wishing death to our enemies, but we have a genuine curiosity of "whatever happened to that guy or girl".

I think that great for a show that metaphorically was about growing up and that transition from being a teenager to being an adult, that it did touch on that psychological byproduct of the high school experience. That what was once horrendous and terrible now seems spiritually cleansing.

I wish Johnathan was the one left standing and was helping the Scoobies in Season 8. Andrew is just an annoying little bitch that deserves to be slaughtered.

I thought Hush was an amazing piece of work. And they did write things out! The masterpiece of Joss making an entire show without words (almost) that was understandable and believable (as far as vampire stories go) and at the same time, creepy, funny and a whole lot of fun. It was as if someone said to Joss, "I'll bet you can't make a silent show that stands up to the rest of the series." And he said, "Just watch me!" and there was Hush.

I've watched them all too much and things that had me in floods at the mere thought of them before, now have hardly any impact...

but the ones that are fading slower are:
the yellow crayon speech,
spike crazy the church in beneath you,
dawn cutting herself to see if she's real,
faith beating herself to a pulp in who are you,
buffy making andrew cry in storyteller,
angel coming to dance with buffy at the prom,
buffy's response to finding joyce in the body,

but the rest of the body I find a bit tedious now, which is sad...

Hey now, you got me all wrong! Spike's one of , if not my FAV character. My comment per his shaggin' Buffy was simply a poke at Chrisisall and his chickified tendencies. Truth be said, I find Spike's sensitive side and ability to 'get' what others look blindly past to be refreshing. I'm glad that his becoming a deamon didn't erase that quality in 'William'.

Off the top of my head, one quick moment that hasn't been mentioned...

Forget the espisode but season 5. Buffy asks Spike to look after Dawn and he has her in the caves. She complains about something and Spike reaches his hand out to her head. When she looks up, he lets it drop before he's touched her.

What's fading? The whole angsty Bangel 'ship seems so high school since I've grown up and gotten a real relationship. Tuxedo man and Sailor Moon have the same dynamic. The hundread year old vampire and the high school sophmore just seems kind of creepy now. (I know many disagree. Flame away. )

Everyone talks about how in season 2 when Buffy and Angel have sex which turns Angel into Angelus, that that moment is when the show became THE SHOW. And that and her running a sword through him to keep Hell on Earth from opening up at the end of the season were the most powerful moments of the series and that an entire generation cried and all that and said Shakespeare ripped off Whedon or some crap like that.

Personally, that was one moment that didn't do a damn thing for me. Maybe it's because I never really bought the Buffy/Angel relationship. It seemed more of a plot contrivance than a genuine attraction, which never really had much chemistry, I found. Plus, when she saw Angel acting the complete opposite of his regular self, a huge red flag should have gone up in her head instead of just crying about it. Maybe I'm saying this because I'm not a teenage girl, but from a storyteller's POV, this just seems lazy and cheap.

Also, I found Angel in the first three seasons of Buffy to be a pretty bland character with not much of a personality. It was when he left and got his own show that Angel, to me anyways, actually became interesting. So him turning into Angelus in season 2 didn't have that much power to me because I didn't care about him to begin with. When Angelus returned in season 4 of ANGEL, THEN I actually sat up and considered him a true threat.

So I second you Clementine. With the exception of "I Will Remember You" in ANGEL, Buffy/Angel means absolutely nothing.
