From RopeOfSilicon.com, an exclusive Comic Con interview with The Master:
http://www.ropeofsilicon.com/news.php?id=6846

It's a great interview, so read the whole damn thing!

Excerpt posted at NewsOfTheVerse.net:
So give me hope for a Serenity II

JW: Hope for it probably rests with this DVD. (re: The Big Damn Collector's Edition)
. . .
So then you're saying we've got a chance?

JW: Well it's probably not being discussed in boardrooms right now, but the fact of the matter is if it makes enough money sooner or later they say "hey, this is money!" Also there are paradigms that are much cheaper, it doesn't have to be enormous. But on the other hand I'm happy to say all of my actors are working very hard. It's not the same situation where we all threw in for pennies because we had to finish telling that story. Now that situation might be harder to bring about.

I have faith that we will get our big damn trilogy - it might take another 5 years... it might take 10... but we'll get it! Never say never - that's my motto... or would be if I had a motto...

This is much more positive than he's ever been. I mean the last thing was, "I'll do it if somebody comes calling."

And it's nice to see confirmation that BDM went into the black from theatrical release. That has been debated in these threads many a time. They are making a fortune from these DVDs.

I say let 'em and get us a BDSequel. Mine's on order from Amazon through the website to make money for the host.

There is always a cautious hope existing somewhere in sometime. I will keep believing because I choose to. Don't get me wrong, I love hearing it from the master's lips, but, if I lived and breathed a sequel on Joss' words, I would never get anything done.

I am so very, very happy to hear that Serenity made money! I felt particularly badly for Mary Parent (at Universal) when we all thought that Serenity had lost money in theatrical, because I thought, "Here's this Firefly fan, she wanted it so badly she made the movie happen, and now her bosses are probably mad at her and maybe she'll get fired..." Whew!

I never bought a DVD before Firefly, and I've ended up buying three of those (one as a gift for my brother, one for me, and one to use as a loaner copy -- it's always out there somewhere), one Serenity, and now I've pre-ordered the Special Edition. I can't wait to hear the new commentary :)

This is the most hopeful thing I've heard Joss say!

I also know more than ever that the key to any possibility of a BDSequel and not having to wait forever for it resides in how many of these BDCE we can buy.

So spread the word, Browncoats, spread it far and wide particularly to people who you know are BC's who are not online, because sales of this DVD need to be awesome!!

And write Universal and thank them for this!
Check this thread to follow a plan that's already in place to do some of this.

It's a long shot, but if Joss says it's feasible, it's doable!!

Friendly reality check here........How many of those who bought the Serenity DVD already are going to buy this new DVD? 10%...25%...50%...75%...?

Is it going to be "marketed" somehow other than FF websites? Who, other than 'coats are even going to know it's out there?

Just seeing that interview made my heart stop for a second. From Little seeds as they say. How many other movies have gone on to being produced after hearing even more ephemeral comments than that.

Got My BD-CE on order and am spreading the word.(side note, I already own the R2 Version with most of the extra material on anyway, but who gives a ****)

I dunno, Jongstraw. I dunno.
I know I am and I'm hoping that Browncoats everywhere will.

It's being marketed some by Universal. They've annnounced it's release and have links on some sites already. I hope they'll have more. AICN, IGN, BBC, some other places might mention it and pick it up in advertising.

Do you have any ideas how we can do this? Spread it beyond the fandom? I've written all my family members and friends and told them about it.
I'm going to send out a bulletin on my myspace and hopefully that will get to some people who are possible fans and not on these sites.

I am hoping we can create a big enough Digg Team ( to digg any articles about the BDCE that come up) that we can influence the seeing of this on that site.
Any other suggestions about how we can get this wider than the fandom are much appreciated.

Here's an idea, you could switch it up to be an ad advertising the BDCE in your local paper....

One of the things that I am doing to promote the collectors edition is going around to my local video stores that sell movies and asking them if they are going to have any copies for sale on August 21st.

That way, they know there is demand and they will order copies.

Another thing I am doing is making sure that everyone I have loaned the DVD's to in the last four years knows that the CE will be available.

Amazon.com has put the Serenity Collector's Edition DVD cover on http://www.boxofficemojo.com/ I snagged a pic. http://www.fireflyfans.net/sunroomitem.asp?i=17425

I'm hoping for a big box at the Wal-Marts. Even if it isn't an all Serenity Box. IT'S A TUESDAY! How about a Serenity/Slither combo pack! What other movies does Universal have being released that week?

If not, Best Buy is going to have a lot of them. They know.

Target also knows. Somebody at Target loves Firefly! $19.99 all the time!!

No sign on Netflix last time I looked. Wonder if Blockbuster will have any for sale and/or rent.

I believe every Browncoat should order 1 copy direct from Universal as a Thank you and More Please!

http://homevideo.universalstudios.com/details.php?childId=36897

I'll be buying several that Tuesday and that week at stores. Christmas presents. And I'll also be making sure the shelves are neat and stuff. Sometimes the front side of the stores sell out and the DVDs are just in the video dept. Or the other way around. Wish I could take the day off work like when Old Serenity was released. The thing about shelf space is that people will see it who may not even know anything about it. People may recognize the ship! Or not! Look sci-fi movie...hadn't seen that one before.

REMEMBER ALL PRE-ORDERS FROM ANYWHERE COUNT AS FIRST WEEK SALES!

Yeah! Serenity is in the black!

I for one will be buying MANY copies. For those asking if browncoats will buy another copy, what, are you serious? How many of us saw Serenity at the theater more than once? I saw it over 20 times in the theaters, and I am by no means a rarity (a tad extreme, okay). Local stores will have a hard time keeping it in stock around me!

I've updated the bigdamnsequel.com website with a link to the article, by the way, in case anyone needs an easy way to spread word to other browncoats.

Laremy,

Thanks for the great article!

Your article has a post on http://whedonesque.com/comments/13907#184902
Do you have an id over there...because if not you can email them and maybe they will let you in as a special case.

and this very thread has been picked as news here on fff.net Congratulations XARDOZ! which means it will stay on the front page for a while and will be read by more people. For example: Friday, August 03, 2007 03:29 TIMES READ: 929

So, Laremy,

Did you know that there is a problem that some people know about Serenity but they don't know about Firefly? Really, just found two people recently. There is also a problem that people know about Firefly and don't know about Serenity. That is why the Serenity Collector's Edition DVD cover pic is so shiny on the front page of your article. People might just recognize the ship. Also seeing the cover, people think spaceship...must be a sci-fi movie...might want to check it out. Instead of just thinking it is a movie about a woman named Serenity and her boyfriend and what is that burning thing in her hand?

So I printed up your article for two comic book stores and went to bed.

Woke up. Libraries. All those libraries that put Serenity in circulation. They need a copy of the article too. You know what the article needs is a picture of the Firefly DVD cover on the third page. Sure I could print one and tape it on. But maybe you could ad it to the article for those who don't know. (Hint Hint Hint) Really there are people. That is part of the problem.

And also there are people who don't know who Joss Whedon is. Not here. But elsewhere. And there are people who don't know who the actors are. REALLY.

For example, Universal put in their press release

http://sev.prnewswire.com/entertainment/20070731/LATU15431072007-1.htm

Of course, they should have said Jewel Staite ("Missing", "Stargate: Atlantis) because she was in one episode already.

I think what he means by saying it could come back in a different paradigm, maybe not as big is... TV. Like a TV movie or mini-series. That would be less expensive than a full-blown movie and could be the toe in the water, testing whether there's enough interest for another shot at a series.

I agree that hope rests on sales, not only of BDCE, but also the series. What if we create a forum or thread and count how many people we've introduced to the series? Just keep a running tab. It doesn't have to be scientific or even real, but everyone knows someone who hasn't heard of or watched Firefly. This might inspire a new push (not that the momentum of everyone here isn't enough).

I agree with you about the tv movie, miniseries thing, since Joss said that, I'm thinkin' he's thinkin' that. He also said it would be harder to get the actors though, so we'll see.

I think starting a thread on the boards we're active on, counting how many of us are going to buy the CE, how many folks we've intro'd FF to, and how many of us are still buying the series to share is a good idea.

When the time comes to start keeping track, go for it OMS. I'll help you keep it bumped as will everyone here I'd wager.

One more thing though. The active participation on this board has dwindled. It has on all the other boards too. Think what activity this thread would have had last summer when we were all planning and urging each other to guerrilla market. Look at how many responses and looks this thread has had. It'll do better now that it's in the news panel. ( Thank you mods!)
We need to spread this news far and wide amongst flans, fellow scifi fans and in every way you can think of. There are loads of folks who no longer check the boards nor even lurk! We need to reach them too! If more of the 'Verse relies on the sales of the CE, then I hope we can rally lots of folks, cuz "eleventy kabillion" is a lot of DVD's!

It may take 5 years, it may take 10.....

I'm not giving up hope, so don't take my meaning the wrong way, but the longer it takes, the more I feel we lose. Summer can't play a 17 yr old girl forever. I just wonder if we'll even recognize our BDHs the next time we get to see them on screen. Not to mention the rate at which Joss likes to snuff out the most beloved characters.... ) Ok, that was uncalled for.......But I can't help but think the only BDH we'll recognize in the next movie will be the gorram ship!

People love a happy ending. So every episode, I will explain once again that I don't like people. And then Mal will shoot someone. Someone we like. And their puppy. - Joss

AURaptor, I don't think you're expressing anything we haven't all thought of. I know I've discussed these same exact things with my friends who like me would sell their property for a sequel, but know it's gotta be soon.
So no worries, no one is going to take your meaning wrong. At a certain point, it's moot for there to be more 'Verse with these same characters and actors. Then we have to think, will we like something else as well? For me personally, it won't be the same, although I can't rule out checking it out, cuz it's Joss.

Spacey said on another board that she thought we'd hear about a sequel in the next 6 months. By Joss, I hope she's right!

Joss is not one to get our hopes up and dash them, so I'm sure he's working hard to bring us back to the 'Verse one way or another.

Hi FollowMal,

You asked me to respond to the charges that I misquoted Joss, which I think are happening at Whedonesque re: Serenity's profitability.

I'd be happy to do so in any format, including here, but as I'm not a member over there I'm not sure how I could properly defend myself on that forum if you catch my drift..

Here is the exact quote from Joss, which I still have an audio recording of:

ME: Serenity, that was the last time we spoke.. and I kind of did some rough math and I figured that if it sold like a million DVDs it would be profitable but I don't have any idea of the inner workings.. is it a success to you or the studio? What's the final...

JOSS: It's a success to the studio or else they wouldn't be putting out a special edition DVD. And I know it's a success to the studio because they've actually admitted it on paper which as you know studios are always loathe to do, you know the "we lost money on Batman" rule... but um, and that was theatrical actually. Theatrical was a disappointment as everybody knows but it did go into the black, ironically, and then it did go to DVD and they took me aside and they said "We can not keep this on the shelf, we can't stop selling..

ME: Yeah...

JOSS: This, we want to do a special edition....

And so on from there. So I didn't misquote him on any level. I have no idea as for the inner workings of studio accounting, as you'll notice from my original Q (which I cleaned up for sake of clarity, and being able to actually keep the interview under novella size). Some say studios get half the cash, theaters the the other half. I've seen the 55% number thrown out on Whedonesque and I'd say it has as much credence as anything else.

The basic thing I would point out however is that studios essentially don't reveal profit margins on anything. They are extremely elusive, which is why I asked the question. When Joss says they put it on paper your guess is as good as mine as to where that happened, was it a private memo? Was it a press release or interview I didn't catch? I don't know, and frankly it's not really my job to know. I take Joss at his word, and if the 38.8m in revenue (minus the theater's take) doesn't equal the reported $39m production budget... well, you got me. That's why I initially stated I figured 1 million DVDs would be the profit maker ($15 x 1m). But really the production budget could be off, even though the $38m in box office must be legit. I challenge anyone to find me real numbers from the studio on damn near anything. So could Joss be confused, or misled? Sure. But did I misquote him? Nope.

I would agree at face value the numbers don't add up, but for my purposes in an interview I just convey what the person said. And in this case the audio backs me up. In general misquoting anyone would be a very poor idea for a writer because you'd tend to not get interviews anymore. And as this is my third interview with Joss in the past two years I clearly have a vested interest in making sure I quote him accurately.

One last thing, who is to say that the only revenue source is the box office? What about other sources of revenue? I don't know all of them but merchandise, or heck even if it helped sell more Firefly DVDs. The rigors of studio accounting are as mysterious as they are byzantine. So I'm trusting Joss.

Best - Laremy

Hi, Laremy. I asked you in a PM to respond to a
post on the OB in which that person stated that perhaps Joss had been misquoted as they just didn't believe that Serenity might have gone into the black.
The OB ( Original Board- Fox Prospero Firefly Board) is different from Whedonesque.
Since my message to you, someone over there (OB) informed that poster that you'd recorded the interview, therefore had not misquoted Joss. So problem solved over there.

As for Whedonesque, I am unaware of anyone over there posting that Joss was misquoted, although there is discussion over there as well that Serenity could not have made a profit.

You may join Whedonesque to discuss something that involves a project, article or website that you've conceived, written or made if there is discussion on the website about it. All you need do is register and fill out the form saying why you'd like to join.
I'm not sure "defend" is the correct word for what you might want to do at Whedonesque, more clarify.
I get no sense over there that they think you're in the wrong as much as I get the sense that some of the more connected to show business folks on there are incredulous that Serenity made a profit.

Thanks to everyone for the great links, and especially to Laremy for the interview with JW.

I will, of course, be purchasing at least two of the CEs: one for watching, one for archival purposes.

I'd like to take a little time, here, to forward my fondest desire to see Firefly return to television, as either a miniseries or full-season series. As one of the links revealed, television is the surest path to financial success. With NBC being in Universal Studios' 'family tree' -- along with SciFi Channel -- I see this as a perfect opportunity matched with an ideal delivery system. NBC's "Heroes" also shows on SciFi; "Battlestar Galactica" runs on SciFi -- for only one more season -- and both sell like hotcakes on DVD. When BSG retires this year, what will replace it? Wouldn't Firefly figure to do well in its stead?

...Of course, V-U (Vivendi-Universal) would have to prize the TV rights -- which don't expire until 2010 -- from F*x TV's deathlike grip, but...

Finally, a word about Joss, which may displease some; but, I feel it's a valid observation and I intend it as a means to improve, not to denigrate the man.

I think JW may be working his way out of a career. As fans will doubtlessly already know, he's getting washed out of projects at an alarming rate. While he acknowledges that he's hard to classify by genre -- and that he's hard to sell to studios -- he seems to remain convinced that he's bulletproof as a combination writer, director and creator of stories. The evidence would seem to suggest otherwise.

It is possible that a major reason why we have not already been greenlit for a sequel is the studio's reluctance to work with this unpredictable genius, who readily confesses to wanting "to get it all in", rather than narrowing his focus to the gist of the story. Admit it, if you dare: "Serenity" was a bit of a rockety ride, plot-wise. It wasn't so much that it was a bad ride, or that it took a lot of unnecessary detours; it's just that it could have -- should have -- been streamlined to the central premise. Then, more time could have been taken with individual character progression/interaction, Joss' forte.

...Joss the director should have demanded script revisions from Joss the writer...

That's why Joss has been so good on TV -- where he can weave as convoluted a tale as he desires: He can have as broad a focus as he can imagine and it's all to the betterment of the property. But movie storytelling is a different proposition, altogether. It's a much shorter format; trying to squeeze an entire series-season worth of subplot into a 2-hour timeframe is really neither possible nor desirable, while maintaining a discernible main plot at the same time.

And yet, I get the distinct feeling that Joss has no desire to return to TV. He's hitched his star to movies. Problem is, he's not yet a great (or even profitable/'hire-able') movie storyteller.

Joss -- if you're listening, or have friends who report on commentary on this website -- do yourself a great service and get an arbitrator between Joss The Director and Joss The Writer. I know JTD trusts JTW implicitly; but I think that trust may be somewhat misplaced. JTW is too much like a kid in a candy store; inaptly paired with JTD, who is too much like a doting grandparent, to the detriment of the kid's dentition. There needs to be somebody (Tim Minear?) wedged in between those two rascals.

Joss, we need you. Not just for SereniFly, but for all the wonderful stories you have yet to tell us. Please stop thinking you can work in a vacuum, wearing all the hats. You need someone to keep your creativity grounded and focused.

In closing, while this has been critical, it has been critical in the best possible sense: It is intended to point out not only flaws in behavior/execution, but it also attempts to suggest possible means to improve. It is given out of genuine love and respect, and I hope it is received in the same manner.

For what it's worth, I still watch Serenity and Firefl

FollowMal: Good to hear!

Zoid: I mean no disrespect to you as I say this, but that makes absolutely no sense to me, that he's "working his way out of a career". If you'd do a little more research, you'd find that FIREFLY/SERENITY and GONERS are not the only things he's involved in right now. He's done, or is in the process of doing, tons of other outside projects. Some are BUFFY and ANGEL related, some are not. There are other threads on this site that link to those projects, if you wish to read them. Also, he's said countless times that he loves tv, misses tv, misses the actors of all his shows, but that tv doesn't necessarily want him. He's an offbeat kind of guy, and most tv execs don't understand it.

Dogjoy: I only found out myself about a month or two ago. My aunt read about it in a magazine.

zoid,

You forgot USA. You know the Cable channel whose motto is loves characters or something. And who fought with the Sci-Fi channel for the rights to show Firefly and (out bid) won. Who already owns the rights to show Serenity.

AND you know that 2010 doesn't seem that far away anymore. And TV rights doesn't effect Straight to DVD and then show it on a cable channel rights.

And does anybody know if TV series rights are the same as Cable series rights?

Serenity was only $130,536 below Budget. It is entirely possible that that $130,536 has been made up since 2005 and not been posted on Box Office Mojo. The studio could be adding up film rental fees and ticket sales. The Can't Stop the Serenity screenings would have accounted for at least $23,500 in film rental fees. 47 screenings x $250 each x 2 (2006 + 2007) . And Serenity keeps screening. It just had two midnight screenings this weekend. And there at least two more around the release of Serenity Collector's Edition.

I come past here everyday in hope of news.

To get that hope from the lips of Joss himself is a funny feeling.

I had this small feeling that Joss had forgotten about Firefly and given up after achieving Serenity. Clearly he is still very interested in the verse.

When that S.E comes out I will be buying $100 worth. I always said that I would spend any amount of money to get it back and here is my/our big chance.

People who have the money...buy in bulk. I have worked in retail and I know that bulk buying usually tells the owners "shit, we have to buy more of these."

The studio does not make money on copies sold to us, it makes money on copies sold to the retailer. So if you go pass a shop, buy the last copy, buy the last 2 copies, MAKE THEM ORDER MORE!

I loved scrolling down this page and watching the wheels slowly turn on a 'browncoat plan'. This is our big chance and I now have a great feeling.

Good luck everyone, I eagerly await the next 2 months

Well browncoats, here we are. We're still holdin', waiting for word and now the word has come. Joss says our hopes of a sequel rest on this special edition dvd. We want another film the SE dvd has got to sell.

Word is it's only on region 1. That news ain't all that great. That means it's up to us Region 1 browncoats to do the impossible. AGAIN! We know better than assuming anything. We know better than to expect a lot in the way of support or marketing from Universal. Suits me fine. Leaves all the credit for it's success to the browncoats who have carried the signal so far.

Time to dust off those brown coats. We want our girl to fly again it's up to us. It's going to take each and every browncoat here, on every other message board, those that don't post, and those who may not even realize they are browncoats yet. We have to spread the word like never before. It's time to utilize those guerilla marketing skills like never before. We need to do every single thing we can to insure this SE dvd is a success.

I ain't asking no one to mortgage the family farm buying every copy at the local Best Buy. Buy as many as you can without stretching the budget too thin. If that means just one copy, that's something and it puts us one step closer to a sequel. If you can afford more than one, I urge you to do so. The SE dvd will make a great gift and there is only 140 days until Christmas. There is all sorts of reasons to give a shiny gift like the SE dvd.

Spread the word. Tell everyone you know about the SE dvd. Spread the hope Joss has given us to every message board, community, and site you visit. If the signal dies here it is because we didn't hold like we promised we would. I know we all want the story to continue, so let's get out there and do our part to see that Joss has the chance to tell it.

wow this one is even better IMO. When was the last time he spoke like this? With such optimism and desperation?

A Quick question...this S.E will be available in australia right??

ok.. I'm 50, not a trekky or any other crazy/dressmeup with a laser gun fan. I make decent money in the corp world, fathered 4 kids, grand dad this year..musician on the side with some national credits..etc..all this to say that I've passed over Buffy (love the movie though) and other Joss stuff through the years and never even saw Firefly when it was airing...when the movie trailer hit the theaters I thought it might be a cute flick for a date night with the old lady..it was..and it was again..and I ordered the DVD collection immediately and the movie when it came out. I fly frequently as part of my work.. I pack several DVDs for entertainment and change out the assortment each trip...except for my Serenty/firefly set. those travel with me every time and I have rewatched them more than I can count. Something about the intersect of the actors..from the very first shoot til the end...the general premise, etc..the lack of stupid monster alien makeup, and the total ship set itself...it's an adult series, a bit dark sometimes, but also with some nice wit.
I wish I had 5 more seasons to watch and a couple sequels to boot. The story just hits me right. so thank you to Joss, and all the great folks that brought what you had and could to the market. You have created what is my all-time favorite. I can only hope for more...ET

My hope was dwindling (anyone who has read a few of my older posts knows this) but I always prayed a miracle would come, looked for some angel to shine down, now maybe this is it. I'm not gonna get too excited (had too many dissapointments in my life) but this is indeed shiney enough news to get me... well hoping again. Been a hell of a long and tiresome fight from the beggining, now maybe it was all worth it. Though still.... no Wash and Book. Not gonna look at the negative here.

Now as to getting the word out to mainstream audiences. Everyone's idea's are great, but has anyone ever considered mass flyers posted on buildings and lamp posts and community bulletine boards, you know the way local bands do when they want people to come see them play in a club. If you have a good printer and enough paper you can make your own, or make a copy and go to your local library and make copies (color or black and white) I sometimes make posters for my brother's band and this is what he does.

Then there's making pamphlets (and depending on how far you want to take this) just make a general information on the DVD, the show's DVD's, what it's about (fans have always been better in describing the show then the studios) and placing them on car window shields. Some may throw them out but others may go, Hmmm, what's this? and read it. At the very least make an addendum asking they not throw this in the trash and give it to someone they see on the street. Maybe too much? It would get the word out to the general populous out there who don't go on the net or lurk in Browncoat forums. Putting up flyers in schools and campases is a great way of getting things out there too. Well, just an idea or two.

Maybe we held long enough.... and maybe those are our angels flying overhead. I'll hope. For now.

I just dropped in from another entire galaxy, probably, but I was wondering if (surely there must be) the proper conspiracy theories have yet been put forth regarding Fox screwing up the show and cancelling it. There must be somebody suspecting that the storyline involving River hits a little too close to home, correct?

The US government (Canada too, who knows who else) and CIA and some major psychiatric research institutions had a Cold War program during the 40s-60s in which they experimented with the minds of high-IQ children, mostly children of families connected with the military. I don't think they're ready for the story to come out for another few decades. Most anybody with any credibility who gives it any publicity (Google "Valerie Wolf") either dies of a sudden aggressive cancer or "commits suicide." But it's coming out anyway, quietly, because the few who survived with enough sanity and determination to save themselves are showing up in therapists' offices all over North America with similar stories.

(And because there is an Internet. And you can't stop the signal.)

More survived than you might think. They selected for high IQ first and courage and strength second. I don't think they really selected for sanity anywhere along the way, but some of us couldn't help ourselves. I was the only one of four Army kids in my family to get through the decade and a half of excruciatingly painful therapy it took to get myself sane enough to get within shooting reach of my goal. My sister and brothers are casualties. They'll never know what it's like to be truly human.

My goal being, as you can imagine, to ensure that some time within my own life or the life of my kids, the story will come out, and those bastards will go down. (Probably not literally. They're old enough to be dying of natural causes already. Mostly. I think Jolyon West may have had a late-life attack of conscience. Before he died of a sudden aggressive cancer.)

Have fun with this. It's true, every word, but don't take my word for it. In fact it's probably best for my health if you treat me like a lunatic and don't believe a word I'm saying. Make fun of me, in fact. Please.

But if this post is pulled...you'll know why. And I'm sure you'll understand why I'm not going to stick around and keep myself visible.

Have fun...Joss keep fightin the good fight! (But please, please please do me a favor--when you shoot a scene with people dancing, make sure they're all dancing to the same beat, and it's the beat of the music that's playing. It's like nails on a chalkboard to someone with rhythm, watching those scenes of yours where people are all bobbing around randomly like idiots.) (Although I admit it works for the Animaniacs.)

(Spoken in full admiration of your talents. I have all the seasons of Angel and Buffy too.)

Just wanted to say - can completely relate. Not the same age, but not so much younger. No kids. Although pressured by friends - didn't really get into Buffy. Never watched Angel. Thought Alien Resurrection one of the worst things ever written - hoped someone butchered a much better script and this wasn't all Joss. But Firefly/Serenity. Watch them over and over.
Anyway - wanted to respond to your post because when I first had the courage to post, it got lost in the ether and everyone should be affirmed for standing up and being counted and sharing their story. Bravo!

It's typical of the verse we love! Mal sets up plan, it all goes bad but he gets the job done anyway. Our sequel will happen I believe though not the way we expect it to. I expected Serenity to be huge, it wasn't but here we are with hope. They can't stop the signal!!!

and there's the reality of the show to the general public... most "sheeples" are content to live in the plastic world that the government sets up...take away whatever freedom as long as I can live in relative safety and comfort. I'll pay whatever tax and fees you tell me to, and think the way you make me. The general public is not comfortable with the existance that our Serenty crew lives and doesn't want to relate. They are uneasy in the presence of "armed" citizens who will take action for a greater cause as it may disrupt the tranquility for all.
No light sabers, no crazy aliens spouting proof that the human way is really the better way. Serenity shows us as the humans we are..the good and the ugly on both sides. The acheivements we can attain, and the failures we will try to hide and forget..both at the cost of life and liberty.
Serenity is where my heart lives and I "get it". But I don't expect a majority of the world to get nor accept the space that Mal lives in...I onlyhope that it was a wake up call to some.

I completely agree Oldguy. I just wish that people really would heed wake-up calls like that more often than they seem to. The worlds so full of half-blind unimaginative average-joes/janes content with turning their heads from or ridiculing things they don't understand. I've turned half of my family into fans of the show, my mother most of all to my surprise, not big on scifi though she is an X-files fan.

Also I just pre-ordered a couple copies of the collectors edition. Not from Amazon though, long story but I'm boycotting them, if your really interested go here...

Seeing as it doesn't relate directly to this discussion I'll not go into it further, may do a post later though if I have free time.

Great posts there from OLDGUY and StrangeBird. I can only agree with both of you. I've managed to turn my older sister in to a full on Browncoat, she just got it right away. My brother really enjoyed the series and the movie and my Mother too. She was really worried they'd all get killed in Serenity after Shepard and Wash fell. It was great to see such enthusiasm from her as she has no time for sci fi in general. All we can do is keep telling everyone about the 'verse just like Captain Joss asked us to on the intro to Serenity on the dvd. 'We're just too damn pretty to die'. I wanna see that ship fly again. Believe!

don't want to give a wrong impression...I got a lump in my throat when Scotty cranked up Amazing Grace for Spock's casket ejection...and as bad as the acting was across the board, I still enjoy most things Trek. But even my favorite Trek Next Gen..look at the cardboard characters of that first season compared to Firefly. Joss direction, the complete ship set, etc all make for a character interaction that is deep and complete the very first episode. I didn't have to wait for them to "develop" over several seasons...everyone seemed to know their character, their space, and where they wanted to take them, right from the start. Yes it's great acting, it's great set work, and directing, but I also believe it is the nature of the story'd world that immediately gave them a place to exist. Firefly is more unique among the Scifi offerings in this respect. Joss captures the world's around him in a way that I've not seen since Blade Runner..rich, full, simply taken for granted. His scenes are leveraged by the actors, not relied upon as crutches with special effects being the only star...instead, his worlds and scenes are true stage props and space to act in...Man i miss it!
