I have recently discovered Doctor Who, that is the New Series 1-3 and fell in love with the Doctor.

So for you who like or love Who classic or the new series here is a place to share!

Once you've been in Serenity you never leave. You find a way to live in it.

The new Doctor Who is wonderful. Christopher Eccleston, was a great way to start, because he was so unlike the old Doctors in the classic series. He didn't dress wildly (just a leather coat, black T-shirt and black jeans), and he played the weary timelord perfectly.

I wasn't sure about David Tennet replacing him. For those who don't know, TImeloads regenerate, and take on a completely new personality and appearance when they are near death.

Anyway, I wasn't sure about David, but he has turned out to be my favorite Doctor yet. He's funny, and his acting is brilliant. I hope he chooses to remain the Doctor for many season's to come.

I do miss his last companion Rose. Martha is great, and she will be back next season after a stint with Torchwood, but David Tennet and Billie Piper (Rose) had fantastic chemistry on screen.

The good news is, Rose will be back for the three episode season finale next season. There's also talk of Peter Davidson (The 5th Doctor) showing up next season! Cool!

If you can't get enough Doctor Who, there are two spin offs, "Torchwood", and "The Sarah Jane Adventures".

Torchwood is being shown in the US on BBC America. It's more similar to the X-files, than Doctor Who, but it does cross-overs with the Doctor Who series. The main character of the show, Captain Jack Harkness, was introduced on Doctor Who, and has had several adventures with the Doctor. As it turns out, Jack is even older than the 900 year old Doctor! The Face of Boe????

Word of warning. If you're homophobic, avoid Torchwood. It's a very adult oriented show, with some very adult situations that will make the Tara & Willow relationship seem tame. If you're more open minded, you'll probably love the risks this series is willing to take. It's obvious to me after watching this series, that UK audiences are more open minded than they are here in the US. Hopefully that will change soon!!!!

The Sarah Jane Adventures, isn't being shown in the US yet. Though it can be found for download, if you know where to look for it. Wink, wink, nudge nudge!

It's made for a younger audience, and follows the adventures of Sarah Jane Smith, The 3rd and 4th Doctor's companion, and a fan favorite. She's been left behind by the doctor, and now works on Earth as an investigative reporter, chasing stories about the supernatural and aliens. She has two side kicks, a young test tube boy (think a young Kyle XY) who poses as her son, and the nosey girl who lives next door.

Both spin-offs are based in Cardiff Wales (where all three series are produced). This is the location of "The Cardiff Rift", an alien version of Sunnydale's Hellmouth, where all sorts of Alien creatures and artifacts come through.

Many in the UK, consider Russel T. Davies (who created these series, and revamped Doctor Who) to be the British version of Joss Whedon.

For Joss series fans, this is also worth mentioning. Anthony Head (Giles) has made two appearances on the new Doctor Who. He played the evil Alien Headmaster of a School in the second season episode "School Reunion", and he also did a voice over, playing the villian in the animated special "Doctor Who and The Infinite Quest"! It's weird seeing our beloved Giles playing a villian, but Anthony plays both roles well, as one would expect!
It's also been announced that James Marsters (Spike) will be in an episode of Torchwood's second season.

For me the One True Doctor will always be Tom Baker though the new series does have it's advantages - better production standards chief among them. I've only seen a smatering of the Eccleston episodes but I liked what I saw mostly. Tennant is brilliant at being almost (but not quite) as good as Baker. And I liked the episode Blink quite muchly, not just for the seriously creepy villains but also for showing a time travel story from the point of view of somebody who doesn't travel in time.

I have a friend in Georgia who downloads the episodes and then sends us DVDs that he's made of the episodes. I had never seen a Doctor Who epoisode before I saw Chris Esscleston as the Doctor Number 9 but I liked him instantly. I had never seen anything like this show. I just love the Time Travel through space and time and the way the companions interact with the Doctor and reveal different sides of him. I love Rose the best. Martha was good but Rose is my favorite. It is great to hear she will be in this next season finale! This was news to me- thanks for sharing. After the first season finale when Chris' Doctor regenerates- (Parting of the Ways is one of my most favorite episodes ) into David Tenants Doctor- it took me a while to adjust and like this new face- kind of like Rose that way I guess. But now I love David as the Doctor and I am hoping they don't change him again for a while yet. Until I can get new episodes - Can't wait for the Christmas episode coming- I am rewatching Series 3 inbetween my Firefly of course.

Other favorite episodes include The Empty Child, The Doctor Dances, Parting of the Ways, Tooth and Claw with the Werewolf, The Girl in the Fireplace ( I love everything about this episode ), Doomsday to name a few> I like so many I can't think of them all. I also really liked Family of Blood in season 3 with the Doctor as a human- although it made me miss the Doctor. Blink was amazing and it truly had me creeped out! I love it! Can't wait for more.

Chis was great. He was my favorite Doctor until I'd had about a season of Tennant and now I have to say that David is my favorite, even over Tom Baker.

I would say Torchwood is amazing, the writing for both series is tops, and Blink (Dr Who) is one of the most intense, scarey episodes of any show I've seen. It would have been great even as a full length film.

Tom Baker has the benefit of being the Doctor for the longest stretch, so that helps. He's been my favorite for years, but Tennet has won me over. The longer he's played the role, the more I like him, and after episodes "Blink" and "The Shakespeare Code", he bacame my favorite Doctor. I think I like "The Shakespeare Code" for all of the Harry Potter references.

One of the hardest episodes to watch is the one where he loses Rose. He's obviously in love with her, and not being able to get to her is heartbreaking. David and Billie played that goodbye scene so well. It's great news that this isn't the end to their story, and that Rose will return next season, even if it's just for a short time.

BTW: Did anyone notice that if you switch the letters around, Torchwood spells Doctor Who.

Russel T. Davies seems to like sneaking this kinda stuff in. In this years Chrismas Special, Kylie Minogue plays a character named Astrid. Astrid and Tardis contain the same letters.

Yup. Torchwood was the code name used for the series so tapes/etc from each days shooting wouldn't be stolen :)

Well, I grew up watching Doctor Who on PBS, and Tom Baker was my favorite too (hey we even share the same last name), but Tennet has managed to change that opinion. Tennet has just been brilliant in the role. Tom was great though, and I think Doctor Who wouldn't have been the Iconic show it is, if he hadn't built such a rabidly loyal fanbase.

Whats great about David Tennant is that he watched Doctor Who as a kid and the reason he became an actor was to one day play the part of The Doctor. I am guessing he will be around for a few more years yet, as long as the show keeps getting renewed.

Another big (yet recent) Dr. Who fan. Never got into it until the revamp.

As Benj (at the I Am Geek webcomic) noted, you can't grow up Geek without at least knowing of the Doctor, if only by reputation. He'd always been a sort of distant awareness, like anient mythology that I'd never seemed to find time to explore.

When CBC aired the Eccleston series, I caught a few eps out of curiosity and got hooked. All my life, I've only heard about Daleks and Cybermen, and the Master, and seen them only through blurry old magazine photos. Actually seeing them "live" on screen is like meeting Sasquatch or seeing a real UFO, or meeting a celebrity for the first time. "Dalek" gave me chills, as did the Master's appearance in the latest series.

I liked Eccleston's darkness, but Tennant's mile-a-minute insanity has won me over.

As a screenwriter myself, the thing that most impresses me (even with the new series' effects) is how much of the Doctor's mythology is predicated on having no money. The police box Tardis, the sonic screwdriver, the psychic paper, Regenerations --it's all a result of a production scrambling to make do. The fact that it led to such a work of art is a testimony to the power of Storytelling, over such trivialities as budget, effects, props, or even a stable cast.

It has been years since it was shown on PBS here in Milwaukee. And Tom Baker was my favorite too.

It is nice to see it back. I wish they would include the originals. I would like to see the old ones again.

I, too, grew up with Baker. (Tom, not the Abhomination.) But I am willing to watch the new episodes. (Often more than once, and with occassional drooling. )

Incidentally, over on fanfiction.net, a writer named Frostfyre7 is in the process of writing a brilliant Firefly/Dr Who crossover. Worth checking out - and I rarely pimp other writer's work!

Torchwood, I couldn't cope with. The X-File vibe was brilliant, but the, erm, interpersonal elements seemed too contrived to me, a bit 'oh, we're after the watershed, better shove a couple of characters into bed.' There was no characterisation, or context, so it seemed a bit like some of that very bad fanfic that just has bedhopping instead of plot. Which was a shame, because there were some very good and creepy ideas kicking around in it. Plus I used to live in Cardiff, so spotting places was fun.

New Who episodes - 'Blink' scared the crap out of me! I didn't sleep properly for a week afterwards. Luckily, husband was away on business so was not woken up by me turning the light on and yelling about angels. God knows what the neighbours thought, though.

I am starting to get into the new series. After all every Doctor was different and the Tardus went through some changes along the way. They also always do a great job of getting companions.

One person they dropped in the early years that some of you may not know about is that the original Doctor had a daughter. It has been to many years since I last saw these episodes so I am not sure what happened to her. Will have to look it up now that I have mentioned it. But once she left the show you never hear from her again.

Since this new series they say the Doctor is the only one of his race left. I wonder if the will find someone and start his his race again? There is always that possibility.

I think you are right about the girl being the Doctor's grand daughter. The one thing I do remeber is the original Doctor was much older than the others that followed. So he would have been old for a daughter. But a grand daughter makes sense.

I don't know about the Doctor having human blood. He does mention in several episodes this attachment to the people of Earth.

I suspect there may be other Timelords out there. The Doctor has had run ins with a couple of evil ones that I am sure would not have involved themselves in a war with the Daleks.

So they may show up in future episodes.

This show seems to have some popularity. So I can see it continuing. The Doctor is only allowed so many lives and he has just about used them up. They are going to have to come up with some neat trick to continue the series if the Doctor uses up his last life. But I sure they will figure something out. He could still have a child who would take over. He just has to finally commit himself to one of his companions. He will have to do a better job than our Mal did with Inara.

From my understanding the last life was used up with the last doctor whose actor quit the show and they had to pull a fast one to bring another back by killing off the entire race of Time Lords or something similar.

I am just catching up with the new Doctor Who series so I don't know the whole story behind the War with the Daleks. He may have gained am awful lot of lives if he were to get the lives of the Timelords who died in the war. What ever happened must have been more than a simple weapon of destruction or a lot of the other Timelords would have returned with another life. The only thing that come to mind is the Tardis. If a Timelords Tardis is destroyed, what does that do to their lives? Without a Tardis are they lost?

I thought it was that Timelords were allowed (i.e., given by their leaders) 12 regenerations (which means that there're two more after Tennant), but that it's possible to start a new "regeneration cycle" under certain circumstances.

I recall hearing/reading that this happened with the Master --he was way past his twelfth form when we last saw him.

12 regenerations is correct, but your math is off. The total would be 13 lives, not 12. You have to include his first life, then add 12 regenerations, so that means after Tennent (the 10th Doctor) there is room for 3 more!

The 11th regeneration or 12th Doctor will be interesting as they have already scripted that doctor to be a bit evil. I don't remember if that was from one of the movies or radio shows, but it is mentioned on the Wikipedia about Doctor Who.

I like Tenet the best, with a tie between Baker and Eccleston. One has to wonder how the original run would of been if they spent as much comparatively on production values as they do now.

Oooh, a thread about my second favorite series on a site for my first favorite! How can I resist commenting.

Not that I have anything more intelligent to say than David Tennant....yummmmy! Sigh! He gets me through the long cold winter nights. Going to see him in the flesh in the spring playing Hamlet at the West End. Should be good.

Has anyone here managed to catch him in his role of Cassanova in the BBC 3 part dramatisation? Wow was he good, playing a young Peter O'Toole. Such a funny, sexy and sad set of programmes. I would really recommend it if you could get hold of it.

Hubby is a big Dr. Who fan with old VHS from the primeval days. Some tapes are 20 years old. He was excited when the new doctor came on, and got me hooked.

I still cry when I watch the season ender of #2...sorry, blanking on the name....and was very empathetic for the doctor in the first few episodes of this season while he was "in mourning."

"The Girl in the Fireplace" was my favorite episode until this season, when I agree it must be "Blink". Scared the heebie jeebies out of the 19 year old National Guard stepson. We *so* want to hide a weeping angel in the house. Yes, we are evil.

The actress that plays Madame Pompadour in "Girl" is now doing "Moonlight", a vampire/detective show on Fridays. I like it, but unfortunately, knowing networks' penchant for canceling Friday night series with actual characters, don't see it lasting much longer.

That isn't from the show? I seem to remember an episode where the 5th doctor was on trial, and it turned out that he was being prosecuted by his last incarnation who was trying to "steal" the 5th doctor's remaining regenerations (how that would work, I don't know).

Richard Hurndall replaced William Hartnell as the First doctor in the 20th Anniversary Special, "The Five Doctors", since Bill had passed away about eight years prior. I did like that they used a clip of Bill Hartnell from the story "Dalek Invasion of Earth" at the beginning, so they truely had included all of the original Doctors into the special.

That's the guy's name. Thanks. Yes the clip was nice and I thought Hurndall did a pretty good job of replacing Hartnell. Just a pity Tom Baker didn't want to be more involved, but having Troughton and Pertwee on screen always makes up for any other losses.
