The status of BSR

First, the good news. By chance I was able to find a dump I did of the site's database at home from June 2007 that I had forgotten about. I must have made it when I started thinking about ShinyUniverse. So instead of losing over a year's worth of stuff, we're only missing about 4 months, which is still a lot of stuff.
There's been some reports of weird messages being posted on the site in Chinese. I have also been told that there's been about 6000+ attempts yesterday to access the site from China. They're in love with us over there. They should just order several millions Serenity DVDs to show us how great that love is.

Is there any way to ban people with IPs from China from being able to register & post? (Due to my limited knowledge of these things, I'm not acutally sure if that would help...)

Speaking as a person who has posted 300,000 words of a continuing storyline in the BSR since April of 2007, may I just say "Thank You" for finding this latest backup. I'm hoping there's another one lying about somewhere that you will run across, but getting even this much content back is a major miracle! You're doing a really great job under difficult circumstances! Bravo!

I'm still pissed off that i can't read shades of the past or long road home but at least we got more back.

It may be just me, but I've tried to upload a new item to the BSR and it won't let me. Says it can't put a null content into a column and it failed me.
I'll try again later, but is it a hangover from the hacking?

Great news! For most that is. I didn't join until July of 2007 so all my stuff is gone. I guess I'll start reposting, starting with one each of my fanfics and images a day for the next two weeks or so. Haken you are a marvel! Can't tell you how much work you have saved me with finding that more recent backup. Just have four months work to repost as and when. Also, if the Chinese love us so much why are they screwing everything up? Have we someone who can post a notice to them on the site in Chinese to stop messing up with our site? Maybe they don't realise the harm they are doing though for this much damage to be caused I have the sickening feeling whoever is behind it knows *exactly* what they are doing and for that alone I wish to curse them with each of the nine hells.

A Chinese speaker was posting in Chinese Translations the last few days. Maybe he (or she) could do some translating for us, warning Chinese-only speakers what they are doing to the site.
As for them buying several million copies of the DVDs, I'm gonna guess that isn't going to happen. Why buy the cow when you can burn several million copies of the milk for free?

At least you found some stuff, that's good. I'm crossing my fingers that you'll find more as all my stuff from June to Oct is still gone. I'm not going to bother with re-posting. I'm I've got plenty of backups of the fics themselves but I really miss the comments.

As there's been some flooding already of the BSR with reposts, perhaps that great suggestion from ABBEYGIRL to have a repost-Monday should be taken up. Then no-one would put up new stories/chapters on that day, no-one would look for anything new, and no-one would miss out! What do you think?

Haken, thank you so much for your hard work with this site. I haven't been around because frankly, I've been embarrassed about not finishing my fic. Maybe now that I've seen the trouble you've gone through to restore it, comments and all, I'll get off my duff and write again.
