For me, personally, the end of Blade Runner had such a strong impact, that I still get goosebumps when I see it:

Batty: I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain. Time to die.

Deckard: [voice-over] I don't know why he saved my life. Maybe in those last moments he loved life more than he ever had before. Not just his life, anybody's life, my life. All he'd wanted were the same answers the rest of us want. Where did I come from? Where am I going? How long have I got? All I could do was sit there and watch him die.

Impacted me so stongly probably because that what just about the time I started to think about those types of questions. What does it all mean?...

Oh, and one more, (can we have more than one?) Probably my favorite of all time, anywhere, is Boromir's final battle in Fellowship of the Ring. Even with everything else in the trilogy, that fight is probably the single greatest moment in the movie. For me anyway, but then I'm a sucker for swordplay and hopeless odds!

In chronological order

A VOYAGE TO THE MOON - I saw this in Film 100. Over a hundred years old and totally primitive, but has as much charm as a Chaplin short, and it's still the acorn that grew into the massive oak tree that is sci-fi/fantasy.

METROPOLIS - The beginning when you see all the workers moving simultaneously, and then later on the dissolve of the robot transforming into the woman.

IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE - The entire sequence with George and Clarence as George sees what Bedford Falls would have been life if he had never existed and the final moment of desperation when George returns to the bridge and prays to "Let me live again.", and then the snow beings to fall again.

THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL - 56 years old, and it hasn't aged a day. The final scene in the movie when Klattu gives his ultimatum to the planet and then leaves is one of the most chilling ambiguous endings to a sci-fi movie.

THE TWILIGHT ZONE "Death's Head Revisited" - Picking just one episode of THE TWILIGHT ZONE as a testament to it's amazing power is almost impossible, but the one ep that always stuck out in my mind was this one. A former Nazi officer returns to the concentration camp years after the war ended and runs into the ghosts of the men, women and children he slaughtered and is put on trial. Never has fantasy and reality meshed so effectively.

2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY and PLANET OF THE APES - The former with not only the Stargate sequence, but also all the stuff that happens in the vacuum of space. When HAL kills Frank, and you see him gasping for air while being hurtled through space with zero sound, and then when Dave blows the hatch and only has a few seconds to close the hatch, it's the most tense moments in the entire movie. And I know FIREFLY also did their space scenes with no sound, but they cheated in "Out of Gas". You still heard the roar of the flames and the alarms from the inside of the cargo bay when the doors were open. The sound should have only kicked in when the doors fully closed.

And with APES, obviously the ending. I saw it as a kid, and had no idea that it was Earth all along. So I was genuinely shocked when you saw the Statue of Liberty at the very end.

A CLOCKWORK ORANGE - After an incredibly brutal movie of just raw violence, both done by and to Alex, the very end when he's in the hospital bed and is hearing Beethoven while having the sex fantasy at the end and then saying "I was cured, me brothers." is the most ironic happy ending ever. You realize that the movie is all about free will and that Alex is the unwilling advocate for it.

CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND - The arrival of the ships. Nuff said.

RETURN OF THE JEDI - The final duel between Luke and Vader on the Death Star. "If you will not be turned, then maybe she will." "NOOOOOOO" and then Luke loses all control and just goes apeshit on Vader and actually beats him and slices his hand off. Luke's this close to turning to the DARK SIDE, but at the last minute decides not to. And then as Luke's getting electrocuted by the Emperor, the one tiny spark of good in Vader is brought up, and he turns on the Emperor and throws him down into the reactor. I know some people say that the STAR WARS series had already turned bad by JEDI, but I defy you to watch that moment and not get a lump in your throat.

BACK TO THE FUTURE trilogy - Personally, my fave moment of the entire trilogy was the train sequence in 3, but the one moment that's in every one of the three movies is the most magical moment in the trilogy. When right after the DeLorean's hit the electrified cable and has traveled back to 1985, Doc gets up, looks at the clock completely dazed, walks to the twin fire trails, and as the camera pans up, he starts running down the street, cheering his head off. After being just a mad scientist all his life, Doc has actually accomplished his life's work and done the impossible.

BRAZIL - Two moments. When Sam first arrives at Information Retrieval. Completely empty in contrast to the cluttered records. He

Two moments that I can think off the top of my head are both from Lord of the Rings - while to me all three films in their entirety are powerful and amazing here are a few of my favorite moments.

In Two Towers when Gandalf and the Rohirrim return to Helm's Deep as the sun rises. It is that part when the score is especially beautiful with the voices singing as Gandalf rides down into the Valley and as he clashes with the Uruks there is a flash of light and the music crescendos and I get goosebumps every time.

Another is when Aragorn is given the reforged sword by Elrond. When he grasps the hilt and draws it and we follow the blade up and the music once again is amazing. I love this moment.

And in Return of the King when Eowyn saves Theoden from being eaten by the Fell Beast and then challenges the Witch King

" Fool, no man can kill me " ( okay its not exactly the quote but you get the idea)
Then Eowyn takes off her helmet and says
" I am no man" I love that part!

2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY - "My God! It's full of stars!!"

DOCTOR WHO "Dalek" - When The Doctor enters the vault not knowing what's in it.

"I've come to help, I'm The Doctor."
"Dok..torrr."
"Impossible."
"THE...DOK-TORRR!!!"

And then the rest of the scene is just startling to see The Doctor showing off all these unfamiliar emotions. He goes from terrified, to taunting to downright malicious. After establishing him for five episodes as this unflappable and charmingly bizarre traveler, you see a darker side of him you'd never think possible.

2 - The Incredible Shrinking Man closing monologue

3 - The train chase from Wallace and Gromit the Wrong Trousers One of the best moments put on celluloid.

4 - Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956). Almost all of the film, but in particular from when Myles is chased out of town. True NIGHTMARE stuff!

5 - Empire Strikes Back The chase through the asteroid cloud. John William's music resonating a haunting relentless chase. Pure genuis!

6 - The Creature From The Black Lagoon The death of the creature... Sad, and moving.

7 - ]The radio play introduciton to WAR OF THE WOLRDS Orson Welles. Very creepy.

8 - Ghostbusters Montage of the Ghostbusters going across New York 'busting ghosts!' Bustin' makes me feeeel good

9 - Ace Venturer Pet Detective
a - When he enters his appartment and all the animals rush to greet him! Scenes like these are what cinema is so good at!
b - When Ace finds out that he kissed a woman who used to be a man. Hysterical!!!!

10 - Silent Running The last remnants of plant life in the solar system being tended to by Huey and Duey - two robots cast adrift on a space ship through the comsos.

11 - Sunshine - Wont spoil it as this is recent, but watch it. I think you'll know which scene.

12 -Akira
a - The creation of a universe.... ?
b - The Bike chase
c - Kaneda & Tetsuo duel outside the olympic stadium.

13 - Jason and the Argonauts The battle with Talos & the sword fight with the skeletons.

14 - Cyrano De Bergerac The whole: "At the poems end.. I hit" duel of words and sword. Classic!

15 - Starman Bringing back the deer to life.

16 -Operation Condor The final confrontation in the wind tunnel. Wonderfully cinematic

17 - Jaws opening scene plus music!

18 - SERENITY The flight past the Reavers!

ok... I could go on but I think that is enough. Just would like to acknowledge the mention of Planet of the Apes... Contender for best ending ever.

as a kid i actually 'married' my cousin under a climbing frame while we were pretending to bomb lovin' mutants - go figure!:)

but truth be told it was watching Cornelius get shot at the end of Escape that made me weep... which is, i know, not a good film. But hey - check out 'Conquest' - bloody brilliant little movie!

Beat me to the Children of Men thing. I'm totally amazed at the character Clive Owen portrayed. I never read the book because naturally, I'm busy, tired, and a slow reader. But what amazed me about the character was his willingness to deny violence in any part. Right to the point one of the dirtbags is standing at a window and he has the chance to grab a weapon and end him, push him out the window, or sneak out. Choosing the latter he gets caught for a moment and the dirtbag gets greased for his dastardly consideration. Moments like that and that incredible denial of violence really stuck in my head and on my heart for a long time after seeing that flick. Yeah, Clive Owen will be Max Payne, but in my mind he will always have the face Theo.

S:AaB Had so many incredible moments. SOmetimes it was summed up in the few frames most folks fail to notice. Yeah, McQueen sealed his title of bad ass with me in that one, Ray Butts was one of the best sci fi tv episodes ever, but in the end when West and Hawkes face eachother and an uncertain future...

The Road Warrior. Last flight of the Falcon. Max loses his car, his gear, and (sob) his dog. You know they were all pretty much f&^%#$ when they killed his dog.

I agree with many of the moments listed here.

I have a few moments from the Firefly series that get me every time. Mainly River moments. Summer is such a terrific actress.

From 'Objects in Space' (excellent writing & acting)
River: "I'll be your bounty Jubal Early"

Jubal Early to Kaylee: "Have you ever been raped?" with Jewel's reactions.

River explaining she became Serenity because she was not wanted.

From 'Safe'
River dancing. It impacts more after seeing the whole series and watching it again seeing that face of pure joy despite all the problems she has. For a short time she is lost in the joy of the moment, doing something she loves.

The new Doctor Who series has a few for me too.

Pretty much most of Rose's interaction with Pete in 'Father's Day' and Pete's decision to sacrifice himself. Resurrection and Sacrifice are always powerful story elements.

The Doctor's happiness that everyone lives at the end of 'The Doctor Dances.'

And Rose's last meeting with the Doctor at the end of 'Domesday.'

Someone mentioned "Aliens". Two of my fav lines ever from that or any sci-fi movie:

In Star Trek: The Motion Picture, the fly-over of the new Enterprise with Scotty and Kirk in the shuttlecraft. Of course, the music helps tremendously!!!

You know, when I heard that Lucas was going to go back and re-edit the originals AGAIN I was hoping that he would add Padme to that scene - Picture Vader getting up as the Emperor is electrocuting Luke. Luke is begging his father to save him, And Vader looks back and forth between his son and his master - I think it would have been cool to add Padme's spirit standing beside him pleading as well, something like "Anni, how can you let him do this to our son?" Would have made up for Lucas editing Hayden into Jedi at the end.

Don't know if its been mentioned, but one of the great sci-fi lines I think, comes towards the end of Blade Runner where Rutger Hauer is holding the dove in his hands and looks at Harrison and says "Time to die" and dies. That to me is very poignet(sp)!!!

Plus, the kid who has to take out the trash instead of save the Universe. This actor, although stating that he doesn't know anything about computers, is also the hero in Die Hard 4, and with Mary elizabeth Winstead are worth the admission.

For a film with some fantastic fight scenes, for me the highlight comes when the Spartans and Akkadians come across a town razed by a Persian scouting party, and find all the villagers 'decorating' a large tree. As a film student, that shot makes me all kinds of giddy.

From the first movie, the stand-off between Magneto and Charles, with the cops in the middle. The bullet spinning in mid-air pressed against the cop's forehead was the most tense moment in the entire film.

Three moments from X2.

Magneto escaping from prison by basically using a variation of the "file in the cake".

And Jean parting the rushing waters, lifting the jet up at the same time and then sacrificing herself, followed by Cyclops breaking down and Nightcrawler reciting the 23rd Psalm.

Just the way Dan and Bill say those lines just cracks me up. How in the face of an all powerful being, he's completely litigious.

Another great moment from a 80's sci-fi/fantasy blockbuster.

BACK TO THE FUTURE PART II: The Delorean being struck by lightning, Marty being stranded in 1955, and the Western Union guy showing up to deliver a seventy year old letter from Doc. And then the return to the clock tower in town where you see Marty going back from the first movie, Doc cheering and staring up in amazement, and then Marty running down the street to catch up with him. "Yes you did, you did send me back to the future, but I'm back. I'm back FROM the future." I can't think of another sequel that set up a part 3 so well.

I'd seen 2001 at the Cinerama Dome as a youngster in the mid-70s, then read 2010 in hardback when it came out, then saw the movie on opening weekend at the Cinerama Dome... and that line always bewildered me, because I didn't remember it in the original movie, and couldn't find it no matter how many times I watched the DVD so many years later.

Finally read Clarke's original 2001 novel just last week (!), and there was the line: "The thing's hollow—it goes on forever—and—oh my God!—it's full of stars!"

Further clouding the issue was Clarke's retconning of Discovery's final destination from Saturn (as it was in the 2001 novel) to Jupiter (as it was in the 2001 film) for the 2010 novel.

Nice to finally get that all worked out!

I didn't scroll the entire thread so these may have been listed.

Near the end of Star Trek III as Kirk and McCoy are watching the Enterprise crashing throught the atmosphere. "My god Bones, what have I done?" Don't know if I've ever seen a more convincing portrayal of just how attached someone could be to a ship.

The first episode of Supernatural. Sam and Dean's mom pinned to the ceiling then bursting into flames. Such a powerful moment and the catalyst for the entire story. I never expected to see something like that on a TV series.

Gandalf standing his ground against the Balrog.

Obi-wan sacrificing himself in Episode IV. Even though I was too young to understand it I was still blown away.

Agent Smith pumping round after round into Neo as Morpheus watches abject horror. I had the same look on my face in the theate while thinking "holy shit he's dead!?"

"Meridian" from SG-1. Daniel Jackson's send off. Teal'c's line always starts it off

Punch the air award of TV:
"Pegasus" cliffhanger from BSG. After the whole episode of hearing about how bad Cain is running things and Tyrol and Helo's arrest, Adama just makes a line in the sand and proclaims "I'm getting my men back!" and launches alert vipers. I let out a hearty "Frak yes!"

"Did that just happen? Oh my god, that DID just happen!" award of TV:
BSG "Crossroads part 2" enough said. So many great revelations here. From a courtroom speech, to strange meetings, to weird bogeys on DRADIUS. And the music, oh man, such class. It also ended with a promise. I love that episode.

Data sacrificed himself, I was really moved by the fact that this android, this machine who could not know true love or anger or sadness, and wanted more than anything to be human, committed the ultimate humanitarian act to save his friends and crew.

Makes me misty-eyed just thinking about it.

I have to totally agree with you, Kenobius, on this one. For me it was the soundtrack that made it. I actually got goosebumps just reading your post & remembering that song playing along during the episode. I think I was actually yelling "NO WAY" at the TV by the end of the show. Good call!

One of them was in The Matrix: Revolutions, when the Sentries breached through the ceiling in Zion, and all the Walkers were firing their chainguns into the gap, and all the sentries that had been destroyed falling.

Another scene for me was in The Princess Bride.

Inigo Montoya: Fezzik, jog his memory.
Fezzik: [Fezzik strikes the Albino so hard it knocks him out] Sorry, Inigo. I didn't mean to jog him so hard.

Great scene.

And finally, to wrap things up, I really liked the scene in Star Wars Ep. II: Attack of the Clones, where Obi-Wan is fighting Gen. Grievous, and Grievous pulls out the 4 lightsabers.
