hey cool, i have a couple friends that go there! but they're freshmen so you probably don't know them. oh ya, and i agree w/ you about never wanting to go back to high school. or at least i will once i am well into college and can legitimately make that claim. my high school is HARD. and not just because of it being college prep--i live 45 minutes away. plus, it's in the city and we don't have a parking lot. basically, you have to get here at like 7 to get good parking, so i have to leave home at 6:15 every morning. of every school day. for four years. with a teenager's sleeping patterns. and do homework the entire time i'm actually at home(usually about 4 hours awake). it's a wonder i manage to watch as much firefly, buffy and angel as i do.

i'm 23 and also just out of college. i'm only quasi lost. i know exactly what i want to do, i just don't know how to get there. i'm a writer and will probably head to grad school, not this fall but the next one.

hey, arden! if you end up in the new york area studying film or theater directing, drop me a line! i met my musical collaborator through another fan community, so who knows? maybe lightening can strike twice

39 here, which is okay and certainly beats the alternative. I'm in the sixth year of a bachelor's degree in Liberal Arts (you want fries with that?) at Widener University. Widener University, named for a fellow that went down on the Titanic.

Went down on the Titanic? My goodness, that may be the filthiest thing I've ever heard.

Anyhoo, I'm getting that degree so I can get all those really good jobs that went to folk with 4 year degrees in underwater basket weaving and such.

I've got a job in the IT industry that didn't tank and I work at a semi-large Mid-Lantic convenience store chain that is spelled only with the letters "W" and "A". Anyone who knows what company that is may feel honored by my presence.

Now for the important stuff. I've got an absolutely stellar girlfriend who understands me and puts up with me anyway. A housefull of pets and no kids. No, strike that, my pets are my kids. Two cats, one mine, one hers, two goofy, crazy, friendly pit bulls (don't believe everthing you see in the media) and a cranky Boston Terrier that pushes everyone around.

Love Firefly, can't wait for the BDM and I'm in danger of wearing out my DVDs before the movie comes out.

The more I get to know people the more I like my dogs.

I'm 26 and I can relate to the directionless stance. I'm working in the area that I've been trained for, but that doesn't mean I have direction.

As for schooling, I went to University of Guelph my first year, transferred to McGill, got a degree in Linguistics and went to work at Tim Hortons. I followed that up with a certificate in Technical Writing from Fanshawe College in London. Now I live in Montreal. But still lacking in the directional department.

Well guess I'll chime in.

33 this month, Divorced, never went on to school after high school. Been across the country, worked as an alarm technician, computer repair technician, auto mechanic, manual turret lathe operator, cabinetmaker, Infantryman, Construction worker, Radio Shack Manager, Construction at UT/Austin, back to cabinetmaking now.

My ship is most definatly piloted by me and as you can see its been a bouncy ride. Tryin now to get my own cabinet company off the ground so "I never have to be under anyones heel again." so to speak.

At 46 I appear to be in the top age cohort on this site. The funny thing is, despite a definite expansion of the waist, a need for bifocals, and a few (heh) gray hairs, I'm basically the same perplexed geek I was at 17.

I have, at different times, been a baker, a janitor, a day-laborer, a tank driver, a clerk in a drug rehab center, a network administrator, a student, a graduate student, an ex-graduate student, an unemployed anthropologist (no unemployment benefits for that, believe me), and, God help me, a phone survey taker. At the moment I'm the father of a 5 and 3/4's year-old, and I do contract work for a certain rather large company in Redmond, Washington, which, I suspect, is attempting to take over the world even as we speak. I hope, someday, to be a published writer and maybe even a screenwriter, if my gorram writing partner (USC film school, so it figures) would ever get off his dead butt and finish his part of the project we've been working on...since before I had a child.

Maybe it's no wonder I'm tired....

Oh, bugger! Now I have to wait for someone to wake up!

Well, it sounds kinda cool, but it's really sorta boring. (=

Aside from my BSc, I'm also graduating with a minor in math. I'm only 3 classes away from a BA in Mathematics (standard). All three are relatively easy, but it really boils down to a question of money and whether or not I want to spend my summer before grad school working and taking all three of those classes at once, which I don't think I want to do, hehe.

Unfortunately, the astrophysics program here is really just an extension of the physics department, so I'm practically graduating with a degree in professional physics with emphasis in astrophysics.

If I had it all over to do again, I'd probably go with aerospace or electrical engineering. Well, that or attend a different university where astrophysics was a bit more established and offered more than a couple of courses into the technical aspects of astronomy (i.e., more hands on experience in observational methods, data analysis and reduction, etc.).

Overall though, I've enjoyed the physics classes I've taken here. Solving problems is infinitely better (in my opinion ;) to writing essays for "non-physics" related classes. (=

Good going! Sometimes it's discouraging to work (making a living), go to school, and make a personal live. I fell out of it 4 times (school) and realized my mistake this very last time; each time there was a work crunch, I gave up several class sessions (might be just a week or two) and each time managed to fall behind enough that I failed. Finally made school my priority over work - School is what will make me, work just does it for someone else.

You can see by all the posts that this wasn't a stupic question. Thank you for your openness in asking this question, Sanmi. Look how it has given us this opportunity to get to know each other better.

I'm new around here, 46 and love it. I've been into SF&F since I read the Hobbit in elementary school. I'm a mommy with 7-year old twin girlies a doctorate in public health and work for myself. All y'all in school, hang in there. I went to school until I was 35 some kind of way or another, yet I survived to co-found a non-profit and get enuf sense to quit and work for myself.

I love swinging up to 50 -- where I can "wear purple and channel my crone!!" And it's fun to be an old mama and watch all your peers point and laugh while their kids move out and start their own families.

I call Cornwall a small town 'cause after college in Kingston and uni in Ottawa, I can't go back to a town that has only one bookstore, one music store (neither of which even bother trying anymore

), and about half a comicbook store (mostly sports cards, and a few shelves of Marvel books).

Plus everything's so spread out that you have to either have a car or rely on the bus.

I won't be able to keep the job I have now because I'm going to school about four hours from where I live. I'm applying for grants, but I'll have to start looking for another job. Hopefully I can find one on campus. I hate money. Actually, I hate the lack of money. Anyway, school will be my first priority and I'm not even going to think about having a personal life until after I graduate, or at least until I get acclimated with everything. Thank you for the good advice, though.

well forty-something, let's see it's 2004 so I must be -er- 46. Those worried about what to do after college should just go for something they enjoy, life's too short. I used to be an engineer and my hand-crafted creations graced the heavens and the depths of the oceans (okay I used to build bits of subsea telecoms kit and broadcast satellites). Now I spend all day looking at spreadsheets, which is still fun in a weird way.

I could also produce a map of the world with shiny blobs showing all the firefly fans, if they sent me their zip/ post codes, using a program called Mapinfo, I've got most country codes except for Thailand and Ireland. But putting it on the web is harder, as you'd just get a huge picture, not something zoomable. It comes out in .jpg or .wmf format I think. Maybe others.

Last night my daughter (age 11) got me with "and here's a funny thing - No" when we asked her to go to bed. We tried very hard not to laugh but failed.

Uh, I am 23, feel older, tired. This is my last semester for a BA (History and Political Science double major) at the Univ. of Houston. Lord help me, I have not a clue what I will be doing past summer. Well, maybe a some idea. I'm sure it will involve me having what I like to call the "Rent and Beer Money Plus" standard of living. It is basicly what it sounds like: the beer is decent, I have enough to eat well--although basicly hand to mouth--and I might have health insurance, might not.

Hello there,

New to posting but not to reading so I guess I'll fess up on this question.

I'm 31, have degrees in History and International Relations so of course that means I wound up working on a ranch.

Yeah well I like smacking 'em. It does make for some "Whubba wha?" conversations when I go back home to visit and run into people I knew in college and high school and they ask what I'm doing these days. Cowboy isn't something that many people back east think of when they look through the classifieds.

Pain is scary...

35 next month. I'm a very patient person - one other half who is now writing up his PhD in bio nano something or other, after doing a degree and then a masters degree (8 years in total - see very patient)one 11 year old daughter who actually made me watch FF and I was hooked after one episode, two furry creatures who apparently are cats although I'm sure one of them was a dog in a previous life!
As for who's flying this thing - you got me there, no clue whatsoever but mostly its fun, so enjoy it! And as for a direction in life I'm now considering going to University to study Archaeology or maybe Ancient History. If he ever gets this blooming PhD thesis written............

how is the movie making business, as far as
for independent producers (I am assuming)?

How does it work when you are generating
cash up front? lining up the distribution
channels and getting them into the theatres
and other merchandizing / distribution efforts?

Nothing is easy in the movie making business, but if you believe in the project, and in the people you are working with, it's a blast!

Working on an indie project is like working without a net. You don't have the deep pockets of a studio backed project, but you have so much more freedom. I won't go into details, but being that it was a very low budget movie, we managed to keep costs down and production value up by being under the radar.

We are just now finishing post production, and had no pre-sale distribution deal. We have to promote it on our own, and try to get the best deal so that our financier gets some return on his investment.

The best way we know to promote this, is to get the word out to the industry. That means special screenings and film festivals.

We will have our first test screening this weekend at the Femme Fatales magazine convention (April 24-25) at the Burbank Hilton. Our screening will be free on Saturday night, but a paid admission the the convention that day is required.
