Ni Hao fellow Browncoats!
We are proud to finally announce that the Brown Coat Pub & Theatre in Wilmington, NC is now officially open! After months of exhaustive work and much due diligence, we have completed our rennovations and cleared all of the necessary inspections. Restoring a 100 year old building wasn't easy, but the end product is certainly worth it.
The first official show in the new space is a modern re-imagining of the Greek Tragedy "Trojan Women." Like our favorite television show and movie, this new take on a classical play blends many cultures, generes and perspectives to provide an entertaining and reflective experience. This production also contains an easter egg for Firefly fans. Find out more at www.guerillatheatre.com
We are still gathering artwork and memorabilia for the Brown Coat. Our most exciting news is that we have commissioned Tamica Katzman to create nine original pieces featuring the crew of the finest ship in the verse.
The Brown Coat Pub & Theatre is currently open Thursday-Sunday from 7:00-10:30 PM. An expanded schedule is expected to launch in late April or early May.
Hope to see as many of you there as possible!
PS: For the BSG fans on the board, director Anthony Hemingway visited the space this weekend. He was in Wilmington to receive an award from the Cine Noir Film Festival hosted by the Black Arts Alliance. Hope to get more SciFi personalities to take notice in the coming months!

Now I have an excuse to go to Wilmington! I grew up there and now live further up the NC coast in Washington, NC but I'll always look for an excuse to visit Wilmington.

Truth be told , you can't get here from there...And vice-'Verse-uh...
But seriously , depends how you approach the problem...
I've been to Corolla before , and honestly , coming from down here , I think it's easier just to go to southeastern Virginia , then turn around...
If I was coming down from there , depending upon the seasonal traffic , I think I'd make a ferry reservation from Ocracoke to Cedar Island , and just relax with my feet up for that part of the trip...
Might have to make a comparison of the various options , to suss out the best solution...
Some trigger-nom-a-tree could be involved , so a real answer could take a tick...

.....it cant be THAT complicated to get to Wilmington from the outer banks. I know I have to get back to the mainland cuz wilmington is on the mainland, but i wanted to know how far a drive it would be, as in how long would it take me to get there :-P so then if it was so long none of my family members wanted to go with me (though my dad likes firefly so he'd prolly make the trip) i could get there myself. ^_^ cuz like it or not, when I go down to NC for vacay this year, I'm GOING to Wilmington. no debate :-P

The only problem is that the only way you can get to Ocracoke is by ferry. I'd maybe go the VA way.
Another way is this, take HWY 17 to Washington ( 2 hours 45 minutes or less now the Jacksonville bypass is open and if you know how to bypass New Bern).
Then at Washington go north 20 miles to Williamston. Take 264 (4 lane now) due east to Manteo and Hatterass. Then you would have to go up the northern end of the island to reach Corolla on a 2 lane road that can get very crowded in the summer.
Any way you do it it's a LONG trip.

Full well it IS that complicated...Only more so...
Not to dissuade you whatsoever , 'cause we admire your Browncoat fervor and pluck , but Corolla is even like waaay past the Rim of the 'Verse , out beyond the Burnham Quadrant...Yeah , that's right...Reaver Territory...
'ripa voce'...MIRANDA !!!
Can't take going there lightly...And comin' from there is harder still , with Wash somewhat less lovely now...
There's a legendary tale about 2 brothers from Ohio , that decided to go to the Outer Banks to fly kites during the post-touristy-season , and a fella in a rowboat dropped 'em off...with a hatchet , and a blanket , no livestock...And they had to live off oysters and fish ,'til they could invent an airplane that could get 'em back to the mainland...That's how far off-the-track are Corolla , Nags Head , and the Kill Devil Hill...I'm assured by 'reliable informed sources' that at least a substantial part of the foregoing legend is true...
An-Ni-Hao , we'll be happy to continue workin' out your 'nav solution' , but the navi-comps are not pickin' up any nav-sats 'twixt here and there , so's it's gonna be strictly seat-of-the-pants and 'dead reckoning' to get 'er done...Will work it out , soon enough...
You know , this sounds like the sort of provocation N-C folk would use to conjure a bit of Shindig-gery...
When could you be out on the rim this year , F-L-Tex ? See if we can arrange a transport , once the plans are known...

And yes, there was a hammock. That was a while ago, though. I didn't drive there, so please don't ask me for directions to Miranda--uh, I mean Corolla.

Not sure when yet but it's gonna happen. Anyone in the Sandhills or PeeDee wanna meet up with the caravan?
Personally, I can't wait to see the artwork.

Holy Cargo! (Would have said "cow" but in my favorite corner of the 'verse, that's cargo.)
Damn, this is the sweetest news I've heard in a while. I live in Houston, TX but once every 2 years I spend a week vacationing at Holden Beach, NC. That week is coming up at the end of July ... and we fly in and out of Wilmington to get there. So a Thursday night drive back to town to check out the pub and a show is definitely on the schedule.
You keep 'er flying and I'll make it there. No force in the 'verse could keep me away!
Shiny news! Very shiny, indeed!

This month I will be going to City Stage to support my Bud who is playing stand-up Bass in some risqué performance. (anyone heard about this? akin to debbie does dallas, could I be wrong?). So, I will stop by and at least check it out when I'm out for that. ...and in the coming weeks/months come to the Pub for support.

3.5 Hrs , at most ? Flying what ?

Take a look at this Link , it's from the intersection nearest the US Post Office at Corolla , and shows directions to the Brown Coat Pub in downtown Wilmington...It's a lot more than 3.5 hrs , and even then , would probably require ideal traffic conditions , to be able to make the estimate...
It's nearly 6 hrs , not counting any stops...
Recommend that you eat a BIG breakfast , pack a nice lunch , wear your astronaut diapers , and carry plenty of snacks and drinks , 'cause you're going to be driving pretty much ALL DAY...

I was about to say that I know it's about 4 or 5 hours from Wilmington to Ocracoke, and Corolla's about another 3 or so hours farther than that on Hwy 12. Of course, that's the languorous, scenic route to get there. Not the best way to go.

Ah, Wilmington... 'Hollywood East.' Lotta folks don't realize how much filming/taping goes on out there, and with world-class production values. There're some mighty impressive lots and sound stages, and the local populace is highly skilled and enthusiastic in and for the movie and TV industries.
Or at least it was, about ten winters ago, when I went out to visit with a friend while he and his cohorts were in between shoots. We played bocce in a public park on the coldest day on record, and hung out in various neighborhood pubs. A lot of wonderful beer and wonderful people were involved. Good times, good times...
Another one of the memories I have of that town, and Wrightsville Beach nearby, is that the art and science of the thing called Breakfast was elevated to a special mindset of its own. Lotta places offered breakfast specials, prominently and competitively promoted amongst each other. Had some magnificent cheese grits at one, which I don't even think is a truly indigenous food out that far all the way to the coast, but maybe it is.
Great town, that just got greater with the Pub'o'Brown opening. Best wishes for well deserved fortune, y'all!
NOTIFY: Y | REPLY | REPLY WITH QUOTE | PERMALINK | TOP | HOME
Ahh, the studios! That place and I have an understanding.
Business there wasn't doing too well there for a while until the filming tax incentive passed last year. Now business is booming again.
Btw, grits are indigenous out here! It's still the South after all.
Did you ever try the BBQ? Yummy-yummy!

NOTIFY: Y | REPLY | REPLY WITH QUOTE | PERMALINK | TOP | HOME
No problem! I'll give you directions coming from the north:
-Take I-95 South.
-Then take I-40 East. The highway officially ends right at the edge of Wilmington, but the road continues as College Rd.
-Turn right onto Martin Luther King, Jr. Parkway and go about 4 or 5 miles. The road bends south and you'll see the Cape Fear River on your right as you enter Downtown Wilmington; here the parkway becomes 3rd St.
-Turn right onto Grace St. The pub is 1 1/2 blocks down on your right.
Tip: The best place to park is at the Cotton Exchange (its the old river port that was converted into shops). Its free parking for the shops there. The Cotton Exchange is another 1 1/2 blocks towards the river, across from the Hilton. Easy walking distance! (If the parking guard is there, just tell him/her that your are going to be shopping at the C.E. and make sure to walk through the shops to keep the guard from getting suspicious. Otherwise, you'll get towed. Though, be careful if your wife or daughter comes with you. They may want to go look at the shops.)

Some newb questions:
Browncoat Pub & Theater, showing Trojan Women.
I'm just trying to get a feel for the place, not expecting a full set of details.
What's to drink? Fountain drinks & beer I expect (because of the delay for licenses). Any liquor?
What's to eat?
Can we hang out in the Pub w/o the theater? (We've got nothing against theater, just collating data is all)
Nothing like it up here (that I know of), so I'm clueless about what the to expect.

When I popped in a couple of weeks ago, it didn't look like they had much in the way of eats beyond snacks. Not entirely sure what they had by way of drinks. They didn't even have a credit card machine when I spoke to one employee. They aren't fully open yet, so there isn't really much to look at unless you're there to see a play. Though, I'm sure that's going to change in a few months. And, there was a bar section separate from the little theatre area, so yes, you could go in there and have a beer.
