Not really a big martial arts fan. Especially as so many of the American martial arts movies had the main character out for revenge over the death of their brother/father/wife/best friend/army buddy etc. Boring.

But I would have to nominate Hero with Jet Li.
More for just the beauty of the film and the way it is shot and uses colour than for the actual fight scenes, although they are stunning as well.

Following that it would have to be Enter The Dragon with the Bruce who isn't named Campbell (see other thread in Other SciFi Shows for reference).

The earlier and classic Jackie Chan movies were also good coz they were funny as well as action packed.

The only others that stick in my mind are Crouching Tiger and House Of Flying Daggers.

Can I also nominate Hong Kong Phoey, although this is a TV show not a movie?

Fists of Legend - Jet Li

Yuen Woo Ping and Jet Li team up in a remake of Bruce Lee's Fists of Fury. Although the story remained vengence oriented it was expanded to include some of the racial and historical tensions that existed and still exist between the Chinese and Japanese people. The fights are still incredible to me after seeing 15 years worth of kung-fu cinema.

Police Story - Jacky Chan

Pure gimmick movie but what a great one. Jacky Chan had the idea of making a film where the majority of action incorporated breaking glass. The result is Police Story. The action in this film reset the bar for body abusing stunts. The pace and innovation in the fight scenes are unparalleled.

Rapid Fire was very good but I wouldn't call it the best American martial arts movie. Brandon Lee was definately a full package action star. It's funny that you mentioned Rapid Fire because a couple of the fight scenes were direct copies of scenes from Police Story. The scene in the loft where he rams the guy with the motor cycle and the one where he uses a rolling clothes rack as a weapon were ideas Jacky used 10 years earlier. It's always been said that he did it to pay homage to Jacky.

I have a very hard time making a distinction between American martial arts films and Asian martial arts films because the American films copy (or co-opt) the Asian style so much. It's like calling Wal-Mart an American store. Doesn't sit right with me.

If you are looking for good fight scenes definitely The Legend of Drunken Master or Ong Bak. If you are looking for the whole package movie it would have to be House of Flying Daggers. Iron Monkey also is a pretty good movie.

I can't watch any martial arts movie without comparing the lead actor to Bruce Lee. I really like Jackie Chan and Jet Lee, but Bruce Lee was the greatest of all time. So obviously the best Martial arts move has to have Bruce Lee. I'd probably say Fists of Fury and Enter the Dragon are the best.

I wouldn't call this "great" necessarily, but it's worth a look. It's called Six-String Samurai, with Jeffery Falcon. Cheesy as hell, but some of the fight scenes were pretty cool.

In the 70's they used to show a lot of kung-fu movies all the time on late nite & Sat TV. I guess I'm sentimental to those days as compared to modern movies. I liked :

The Chinatown Kid ( w/ Alexander Fu Sheng )
The Kid With The Golden Arm
Street Gangs of Hong Kong

Alexander Fu Sheng made a lot of these movies, and I don't know any titles except the above. I liked his style and charisma more than anybody I've ever seen since Bruce Lee.

Where I grew up it was called Kung Fu Theatre. My brother and I spent an endless amount of time watching these masterpieces. Each film seemed to have an old, blind guy with long white hair and matching beard. When the bad guys messed with him they were in for a bad time. A lot of the more entertaining films had characters who used very unusual weaponry.

Glad to see someone mention Fiver Deadly Venoms. Definitely a classic.

I recently bought a movie called Seven Grand Masters. Very good old school kung fu movie.

For modern films you just can't beat Hero.

I have to give an honorable mention to the sequence between The Bride and Pai Mei in Kill Bill Volume 2. It is an excellent homage to the kung fu I grew up with.

Check out Perfect Weapon for a great American made martial arts movie.

It stared Jeff Speakman, at the time, a real 4th degree Kenpo blackbelt, and was choreographed by one of the very founders of American martial arts Ed Parker. The movie was a classic martial arts movie, revenge and all that. But the fight scenes were very true to Kenpo and they were not only great, but very realistic. One interesting fun-fact, it also had a small part by Mariska Hargitay, a big star these days in "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit".

It also help immensely if you see the Chinese cut, not the "Legend" one.

Drunken Master was funnier, and endlessly creative (as well being as a true classic), however, DM2 was just balls-out more frenetic & cool.

Perhaps this is the problem? Does the story make more sense in the Chinese cut? Are the fights trimmed down to a less tedious length? Do they actually matter to the story more often than not?

My copy has a weird thing going where it'll switch between the original soundtrack and the English dub at unpredictable intervals. Luckily the subtitles stay in place so I can follow the story. But yeah the dubbing for the early Hong Kong films tends to be rather comical. Frequently unintentionally so.

On the NEW martial art front- I rented Killzone (aka SPL) a while back- excellent choreography by Donnie Yen, great acting by Sammo Hung, but kinda silly 'gritty-ness' regarding the mean mob stuff...for HK junkies only (of which I am one).

Rented Dragon Tiger Gate for 2nite- I'll let ya know.....

Well, there's one that won't be in at my Blockbuster...my rental receipt says I can own Dragon Tiger Gate for "Only $14.99 more", and that makes it the cheapest way to purchase it!!!!! (Don't fret for anyone here- they got 2 copies for rent, and I'll bet I'm the only kung-fu nut in this part of Mass that's even heard of this movie anyway...).

Holy crap! I haven't thought about that one in years. Actually forced my mom to take me to see it in the theatre. The fight scenes were actually pretty good which is saying something because I don't think Micheal Dudikoff had a lick of martial arts training going into the film.

Chris, make a list and I'll try to follow some of your recommendations. I haven't been keeping up with martial arts films for a good long while. I mean I've seen the more popular ones over the last few years but I'm sure a great deal more have slipped past unnoticed.

I forgot to say thanks for the list Chris. In appreciation I dug up this review of Kill and Kill Again from Amazon.com. I don't remember the fight scenes being as bad as this guy claims but his review is one of the funniest I've ever read. Enjoy!

James Ryan and his cohorts pull off martial arts stunts that are sadly, probably near the skill level of any overweight 10 year old. Imagine going down to the local supermarket and randomly recruiting 10 people to star in a martial arts film regardless of physical ability or skill and you'll be close to this movie.

No...no it wasn't that bad...

If anyone here wants to give me 2 or 3 examples of martial art movies you really love, I'd probably be able to target some ones you haven't seen that you'd be safe just buying...for instance, peeps who love Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon should probably go for Hero, whereas peeps who love Enter The Dragon should check out Rapid Fire, and so on...

In terms of choreography, I'll go with Drunken Master II.

But for a personal favorite, House of Flying Daggers was exciting, and just so visually lush.

For American movies, I've always had a soft spot for Best of the Best.

I kinda like the second, though it is certainly more generic in plot and style (didn't like 3 at all, and skipped 4).

But the ending to the first chokes me up every time. How many movies out there end with the villain appologizing, and giving the hero a hug? As cheesy as it sounds, it totally works!

I would commend Karate Kid, for being one of the first to introduce the logic, ethics, discipline, purpose of martial arts into mainstream theater. Before that it was always just "chop suey theater."

And Maggie Q also showed enough in Deception.
