Time for a new addition to the ongoing saga of Browncoat purdyness!

If you're so inclined, please post a picture of yourself so we can all see who we talk to here

Please try to avoid very large images that stretch and break the thread.

How to post images here: http://www.fireflyfans.net/mthread.asp?b=5&t=29479
(Short version: Image must be hosted somewhere on the internet and all you need is the URL. Photobucket, imageshack, and flickr are your friends. See above-linked thread for further details, or click 'reply with quote' to see how others have done it.)
Also, PLEASE NOTE: the tutorial thread is an excellent resource and we don't want it to get overloaded and weighed down. Please test your image posts in one of the many 'test' threads scattered over the board, particularly out of the way in troll country, or start your own to help keep the tutorial nice and easy to load.

Firsties!

Speaking at the graduation ceremony for the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. I was the Student Marshall for the College of LAS (quite an honor), so I addressed the college during our ceremony.

Carrying the LAS banner during the university's commencement (another duty of the Student Marshall).

As the student marshall, I was the first student to receive my diploma, and I had a short biography read by the dean of the college. To my left was one of my favorite professors, my faculty escort, Dr. Heimir Giersson. The red and gold cords (ISU colors) signify graduation with honors (summa cum laude).

My parents and I, following commencement.

My wife and I.

If I may... could you please expand upon the "henna" thing? I am curious.
Is it erroneous to presume it's far more gentle on one's hair than current mass marketed hair dyes?
Do you know how long it lasts? Are there varied colours? This is new to me... I crave information. ^__^

Hey Causal! Looks like you've been busy. Nice to see you back

Why of course, Kitten! no, it's not erroneous at all, in fact there is 'neutral' henna available strictly for the conditioning effects. I've already noticed an increased shine as well as the redness on the patches I applied it to. There is a variety of available colors, which have slightly different effects on different original hair colors... though my mom found in her travels with henna that it doesn't always react as expected. Many of them turned her hair some shade of red. Red is what I was going for, and I used red henna. Or specifically, red 'light mountain natural botanical hair color.' My mom has settled into using the chestnut, which gives her a nice brown shade with some persistent red highlights. She found that anything with 'copper' in the hair color descriptions invariably turned her hair a bright Orphan-Annie orange, though I don't know how typical that is.
Depending on how long it's left in, henna color lasts about six weeks. It takes a stronger hold in more porous hair (though I haven't the foggiest idea how to spot porous hair.)
The downside to henna is that it's a rather long and messy process. You have to add boiling water to the plant powder, let it sit for a few hours, add a little more water, then put the whole thick, drippy mixture in your hair, cover it with plastic, and keep your head wrapped in hot towels for at least twenty minutes to set the color. It's also kind of stinky, though I gather that most things strong enough to dye hair are stinky.
The upside to henna is it's good for the hair, and generally gives you some subtle and natural shading, because it works with your own color, so it looks much less like a dye job. But it will only add color, it doesn't lighten hair.
It will also stain the skin. If you ever see people with elaborate designs on, say, their hands, and it's all in a kind of reddish-brown color, that's probably a henna tattoo.
I'm pretty excited about my hair so far, and will probably douse my whole head in goopy plant matter at some point - still kind of debating that - so if you have any remaining questions I'll happily answer

Another pretty cool thing I got for my birthday, and just decided to use/get a picture of, was a set of gold flatware

How frickin shiny is that?

Rose I am so jealous. I've tried henna on my hair and it has no effect at all except making it shiny. Sadly my hair is too dark for anything but intense dye...you look lovely though

Thanks, Miz A. I agree!

She had a sister, Swee'Pea (hence her name, Jeepie, since they were a pair, and were every bit as mischievous as the characters in the Popeye cartoons), but sadly, Swee'Pea dug under the gate on night and got hit by a car. :(

And PR: Actually, I'm both a dog AND a cat person. We have two of each. All of them found us, and all were abandoned/neglected. Damn shame, too, because they're all wonderful pets. I'll never be able to figure out people... My wife and I try our best to spoil our pets rotten and to make every day a great day for them, because they've already had some really shitty days behind them. Way I see it, as ambassadors for humanity, it's the least we can do to show them that we're not all scum.

Well, that was more rambly, than I intended. What I'm trying to say is this: you look lovely as ever PheonixRose.

I am off to Israel! I took a photo of me freaking out during the night with all my anxiety before plane rides of course (see my blog if ya wanna know) but I have already packed both of my cameras and their respective cables, hence no engie-freaking photo. I can always give it to you when I get back lol. Along with a million other awesome pictures from Israel to share!

If anyone wants me to put any wishes, prayers, or hopes in the Western wall btw, please say so. Cept I'm only online for the next 1 and a half hours so after that I won't be able to see anything net like for ten days. (so yeah also don't worry bout me when I don't post) You CAN however see what's up on their blog: http://www.goucherhillel.blogspot.com/

Damn! I'm writing a lot, this was just supposed to be a little goodbye message. ummmmm....*poofs* BYE!

Hello..

remember me?

haven't been in here for ever! I miss you all, but I have been really tired and lethargic and a little bit down since I returned to the UK from Boston on 1st/2nd Jan... at first I thought it was just my usual crippling jetlag, but now I think I might have had a nasty virus!

On top of that I am having communication issues! My phone is playing up and I have only spoken to my Naughtyman twice this year! It truly sucks to be in love with someone who's on the other side of the pond!

I miss you all!

Rose, your hair looks wonderful, so shiny and such a pretty shade! I love it! I am glad I can see it, coz I can't see most photos on this thread, I'm afraid! Internet issues continue to plague me! I still have your gift here! One of these days I will actually send it!

HK, you are so talented and beautiful! I hope you know that we're not just being kind, you have a very special quality to you, and your creations are both imaginative, gorgeous and have taken great skill and talent to bring to fruition! I consider myself very lucky to count you as a firefly-friend!

MsA! I feel terrible that I haven't been in touch for weeks and weeks! I mean I haven't been in touch with anyone in weeks and weeks... (just ask around!) but I have been thinking of you all, and my sisters are in my heart and thoughts at all times! HOpe you know that!

No photos right now! I will get my act together soon, but right now I am off to bed! What an exciting day it's been with the inauguration and all! I have been watching as often as I could, and can tell my grandchildren (or at least my great-nieces and nephews) I watched it live! I was tuned in and sending my best wishes and prayers to the people of America in that moment!

Yeah - I know - I got emotional... I always do!

Hi to everyone else! I am sorry I can's see you, but I shall try to log in from another computer soon so that I can tell what you look like!

Hugs and love, Magda x x x x x x x x x

You're adorable Tot! I shall have to pretend you're tiny for the time being!

I am back but on another computer! I decided to post a pic and couldn't do it in my bedroom, so I am in the house (my bedroom is attached but kind of separate if you know what I mean...)

Here is me... some pics I took at the weekend, goofing around mostly!

These were of my new, warm hat with earflaps!

(note the bags under the eyes... this despite lots of sleep since returning to the UK!)

I actually have lots of photos of me coz I joined a group where I am supposed to take a photo of myself each day... so far it's hard to do!

Hi Navy!! Hi Roxy!! (hugs Shelle Belle) hello friends I haven't seen for a long time and friends I haven't met before!

I am going to bed now! Sorry, but it's good to pop in again, and I do hope you'll still love me!

Li'l sis! I am alive, and I ought to be asleep again, but I am here instead! I miss you tonnes! I bet there are rooms if you keep trying, I hear each year that rooms are sold out but then people always find something! If not, the Days Inn is almost across the road from the Hyatt! (diagonal to the front entrance) otherwise you, NVG, Frank & I can find a park bench to share and take turns keeping watch!! LOL!!

Remind me to ask Frank to book something!!

Tot! You're adorable! Really!

In the little pamphlet there was a time listed for teh "Knighting Ceremony" and it said that it was open to all young men.......

Not the School's fault. Was the SCA that set up most of the stuff for the Fair.

Was awesome though! Once she was up there 2 other girls came up and joined the pack! (guess that is why she was the Brave)

Guess next time we will have to get her some chainmail and a sword!

PS - She is awesome not me. I don't think I would have done something like that as a kid, even being pushed by the parents!

I thought the very same thing...... but she told me that Knights were Sirs and she wanted to be a Sir, not a Lady....

She did not like that the title was different between boys and girls so she kept the Sir.

IIRC (and it's arguable most days...)

Knights are given the title Sir. The spouse of a knight is given the title Lady. Which could make for some interesting conversation if/when she selects a mate.
