This is a pretty enlightening can of venom pretending to be a thread.

Hero is actually the guy making the most sense. Mike is just f^&king with people. Chris would like people to think that he is, but I suspect once in a while he may actually care about something.

I have to quibble. I think Pirate News is a very sharp guy, and perfectly capable of having a civil conversation. He's just f^&king with people too. I think my current disagreement with him is over whether Moloch can be an owl. I know it's not a unique position, and I'll go post on that thread. But that's civil discussion towards a meaningful end which will conclude in more understanding of whether or not Moloch can be an owl. Now, this may not be an issue that matters to you, but it interests me.

Here's a matter which doesn't interest me, which is whether or not Auraptor is a racist. It's a very small issue, but I'll voice an opinion on it:

No, I don't think Auraptor is a racist. I haven't seen any evidence, and there has been *plenty* of opportunity for it. I do think that he has some stereotypes about groups which are objectionable, but so do a lot of people, and some of those stereotypes voiced by people include things like the intelligence of southerners, etc. And don't tell me that this wasn't already circulating before you got into an argument with Auraptor. I don't want in to this argument, which I think has betrayed all of its proponents as being in serious need of a chill pill, I just thought I'd weigh in.

No. The quote does no such thing. Dennis Prager is a syndicated radio talk show host, columnist, author, ethicist, and public speaker. While a conservative, Prager can in no way be confused with the likes of Rush Limbaugh or Sean Hannity. He is very respected, sincere, reasonable and measured in his views. I find absolutely nothing wrong with his quote, and in fact, I think it's brilliant for the very point it makes. Which is why I chose to post it.

What I get out of the quote, is that we can't judge ALL Islam for the actions of it's extreme radicals. Much like Christianity can't be judged for the micro fraction of evil doers, like Fred Phelp's cult, at Westboro Baptist.

The quote stays, and I'll simply wait for the light of reason to go off in those who don't " get it " yet.

Some people argue and make very valid and reasonable points, that using the "N" is not a racial slur because African Americans use it themselves. I disagree and argue the that context is a factor.

For example, you typed the word...you must be a racist. Saying that would be improper because it fails to consider the context of your use of the suspect language.

Towelhead is a slur. It may or may not be a racial. It is perfectly reasonable for soldiers and citizens of countries at war to try and dehumanize their opponants by inventing a derrogatory term for them. Most people in this world are good people who would not under normal circumstances set out to inflict pain or death on another (either individually or on a massive scale). I suspect this allows such persons a means of dealing with the trauma of killing another human being under the worst possible conditions.

Towelhead is a slur, but is it directed at all Arabs or a specific subgroup? I believe in this case that context becomes the key. The nature of the slur is not its effect on the target, but rather the intention of the user.

Therefore if such a term was to be used by AU, and we've not seen evidence it was, what then was the context? Was he making a point? Was he talking about all Arabs? Was he being humorous or hateful? Etc.

I note for the record that I just made a reasonable contribution to the discussion without resulting to calling anyone a name or using any fracking profanity.

He has demonstrated an illegitimate fear of ALL Muslims. "Islam IS extremism" is a bigoted statement against ALL Muslims, not just Islamic terrorists. Referring to a group of people as "camel jockeys" and "towel-heads" is offensive to anyone of Middle Eastern descent.

I still maintain it was racist. I said EVEN IF it wasn't, racist is still a term that would fit perfectly well, because it's the same bigotry just aimed at a group that doesn't happen to be a race. Though it sure does seem that you're hoping to make it so by the application of sophistry. Actually, what I was getting at, is that someone who says "all Americans are evil" can be said to be making a racist comment, even though Americans aren't a race. And by equivocating that "it's not racism because American's aren't a race" is defending bigotry, and attempting to make it sound like its "otherwise neutral language" when it's nothing of the sort. It's an emotive way of giving racists a free pass, actually. You're trying to cut racism down to something that only exists in such a narrow form that pretty much every racist there ever was could rightfully stand up and use your definition to prove they weren't racist.

Third, a statement may be harsh or offensive without being racist or bigoted. In fact harsh and offensive statements are specifically protected speech under the Constitution...hate speech is not.

The statements you posted are not sufficient evidence to condemn his character.

Oh jeeze, might I remind one that I do visit the Conventions, and there's on average 1-2 elevator breakdowns during one ?

You know, you can't fit 20 of those brats in an elevator, (and be damn thankful for it!) but six of them damn catgirls is enough to drive ANYBODY to screeching madness in about ten minutes.

First they panic and you gotta explain that no, the damn thing CAN'T fall like in the movies, cause it has an autolocking brake system attached to the cage itself that's mechanical and locks it to the rails.

THEN you have to explain that no, the hatch in the ceiling does *not* open from this side, and no, you're NOT going to climb up the damn shaft to get out, you're going to wait right there till they fix the freakin problem.

Then they get bored and you hand out candy, and then they decide to sing... *twitch-twitch*

I tellya, eighteen minutes can seem like forever.

Although, I don't think I got it quite as bad as George RR Martin, who also got stuck in one, at a Convention, with as I recall, several panelists.
I'm sure he was entertaining murderous thoughts within two minutes, as opposed to my five.

Of course, Dora and Barry got stuck in one for near half an hour and wound up married, so ya never know.

In case you haven't noticed he's not alone, and there are a fair number of people who have a problem with jews, and though they don't realize it, there are some people on the forum who have a problem with christians. It's not a unique point of view. You don't find anyone calling the liberals of the forum racist because of their position on christians.

I laughed, and I said, 'oh, sorry about that, but no way i'm defending that sob's sorry little ass. I'll come down and watch if you want. might bring popcorn.'

He just apologized and said never mind, he'd just make it one on one. And so he kicked andrew's, but pitifully, only at basketball :) I was hope 'drew would get his ass handed to him, which he so rightly deserved. (this guy routinely made comments like 'the only reason there are black students is they cheat on the test' etc. But I was impressed that he was dumb enough to, back in the '80s, say that to a black guys face, that was before the take back the n_ word movement. my roomie was one dumb racist f^&k.)
