officially announcing the newly-formed independent rock band, The Fireflies (notice the capitalization? it means this is important people! put down that twinkie and get out those instruments!)

i got the drums covered and in times of dire need, vocals. ebonezer has been offered the job of lead guitarist, due to her awesome homage to deep purple. jayne gets to guest with his rain stick anytime he wants.

other takers? vocalists? bassists? tamborines? backup dancers to shimmy around in sparkly outfits?

i'm trying to get us a spot on the "gunhand box tour 2004" though with gunhand MIA lately, the negotiations have been less than stellar. in lieu of that venue, i was thinking something along the lines of the BDM premiere....gives us lots of time to practice.

Band part thingers:

KGB - Dictator for life, Drums
Ebo - Lead Guitar
Howdy - Lead Vocals
Cybersnark - Keyboards
Soulofserenity - Rhytham guitar and backup vocals
Gunhand - Bass
Thatwierdgirl - piano and/or any of those other things she plays
Static - Sax & backup vocals
Maugwai - Flute
Annik - finger symblos, spoons, and offical band tai chi leader
Wren - triangle
Noocyte - Penny-whistle
Astiana - shimmying and backup vocals
Insight Spinner - belly dancer/ shimmier
Fireflew - banjo
Flametree - piano accordion
Alien Zookeeper - washboard
Malicious - Dumb ass stick that sounds like its raining (understudy)
Delia - Official first fan
Bernadette - First fanatic fan
Nur - First official groupie and groupie recruiter
Monkeytail - groupie numero dos
and of course Whedonesque doing our amazing costumes!
(everybody thank ebo for the list. thaaaanks, ebo.)

ok, lets all say it together people, because my buddy kgb here seems to have missed the memo. Ready?

Ebo is is a girl.

Thank you.

Also, i think I'd like to take rytham guitar and lead vocals if thats ok. My guitar playing skills are on the brink of half-good. Although my soloing is getting better.

what kind of music should we play, band? i'm partial to rock, but i like pretty much anything except country. of course, all final decisions lay with me, the all-important band leader (i better not hear about any mutiny!), but i like to think myself a kindly ruler. but don't make me go jack black on you.

ebo, sorry, you are definitely a girl. i can learn, see? and look at the amendment to the original post? nice, huh? appeased?

oh yeah, i can play the clarinet too....so, we've either got ourselves a wood ensemble or a rock band.

We could have rock with all this other stuff to though yes? think yellowcard, they've got a violin.

Do i even want to start the argument about what kind of rock were going to play?

Probably not.

I withdraw the question.

nice yellowcard reference. anyway, here's what we've got so far:

lead vocals- ebo and howdy (think the blink-182 song, "i miss you"...both tom and mark sing and it kicks.)
flute- howdy
lead guitar- ebo
sax and backup vocals- static
drums- kgb
pennywhistle- noocyte

edit- understand, we may not always have an "instumental" place for everyone. if you aren't playing, you will be dancing in a cage in as little clothing as possible.

ok, howdy is takin over the lead vocals reigns.

and "i miss you" i on the new cd, song 3 or 4, i believe. its a different sound from blink, but i wouldn't say i'm disappointed.

perhaps, for some songs, we'll go classical and then, as purplebelly says, we'll bounce the bottles on the tables.

Hmmm ... I can play either tambourine or zills (finger cymbals) whilst shimmying in my sparkly bellydance outfits ... I can also do the correct hand-positioning for the Lotus if we want the dancers to do a nice homage to the Chinese stuff in Firefly.

Or we could just do some tai chi in the background.

If Howdy's on vocals now, I'll take over the flute part. Used to ad-lib pretty well in a rock band many years ago. I can also play the fife, the recorder and this funky Panamanian thing that sounds like a tarzan yell. I'm working on the pan flute, but that sucker is hard. So name the key and I got you covered. Just don't ask me to sight-read, because I'm atrocious.

hey bandmates and/or groupies, we seem to have a bit of a competition for bass guitar...gunhand vs. soulofserenity. i'm apt to give gunhand the job, as soul appears to be our rhythm guitarist. other band additions include wren on triangle, cybersnark on keyboards, annik on finger cymbals and spoons (and teaching the whole band tai chi so we are the most kick ass band in more ways than one), maugwai on flute, thatweirdgirl on piano (have you heard something corporate?), and malicious as jayne's replacement on the rainstick when he's off filming.

ebo, i declare you vice-band leader....its your job to help me with executive/creative decisions and trying to keep howdy from usurping me. we are to be respected...after all, we are the ones with mystique, right?

as for the name, i kinda like it. its not just "firefly" inspired, i'd consider calling my band that even if i wasn't a fan (right, like that could happen...ew, bad mcdonald's flashback). however, benevolent leader that i am, i'm considering any forthcoming suggestions that aren't idiotic.....ok, i'm considering all suggestions.

edit- the name would also attract those who never saw firefly to inquire about our name, therefore spreading the firefly love.

edit #2- anyone want me to post a list of all bandmembers and their instruments at the top of the thread?

I really like the tai chi-inspired stage show and I've always wanted to study it. Can I do that? I can also carry a decent tune, so I could help out with background vocals, if you so desire.

Oh, ya know, if those positions are filled, I could work on costumes. Don't make faces. I am envisioning cool, dark (figuratively), asian-inspired outfits for the bandmembers. I live in Manhattan, so I could just shoot on down to Chinatown and pick up some shiny stuff to wear. BTW, I bought a really beautiful traditional chinese silk jacket last week (think Kaylee's green jacket in Serentiy but mine is silver and purple and more fitted). How sad is it that I am already planning my outfit for the BD premier?

Just a thought, but shouldn't we (okay, I've already made the leap to assuming I'm in the band) have some people doing a joyous jig (a la River in Safe) sometime during the performance? I am NOT volunteering, mind you. This good little irish girl never learned to jig, much to the dismay of my grandmother. So, KGB, is my vision way off?

Call the number here and see where tai chi classes in Manhattan are held. There are lots of different schools/styles out there; this is the one I do:
http://www.taoist.org/branches/usa/newyork/nyc/

With the fab array of instruments in the band, though, I'm thinking the bellydance stuff might be more in line with the happy dancing suggestion. Happy to teach y'all the basics of that, too, if you like.

Oh yeah, band names, The Fireflys is the best name every though, although i was thinking that if i hever happen to make another band, I'm going to name it Static (If the REAL Static doesn't mind me stealing his name that is...) that would be a fun name.

Whatelse...I think thats it, and yeah, a nice list of the bandmembers would be helpful.

On a totaly unrelated note, did anyone w/ Verizon DSL (MSN) get online yesterday evning? I was trying and trying and it let me on a little bit, but it was going really slow. Seems to be fixed now though...just wondering if it was a problem on my end or not.

The band I was in in college was 80% original songs and 20% covers. In fact we never really wanted to play covers (just did them for practice) but we'd do sound checks with Enter Sandman or Raining Blood and people wanted us to play the whole song so...we threw in some covers.

I've done violin and cello arrangements before too but I can't actually read or write music.

Creepifying huh?

I think we should write a song about "The Adventures of Jeremy." (the origonal take turns writing tread) that would make a fun and totaly weird song. Or ballad. Or something.

And yeah, covers are good. Do we play covers the 'right' way (they way they were origonal recoreded) or do we change them somehow?

So many questions, so little booze.

The right way is...wrong!

In many instances a well done cover that "tweaks" the song is better than the original version.

I'll maintain to the day I die that Glenn Tipton's cover of "Paint it Black" kicks the snot out of the Stones' original, or Slayer's "Innagaddadavida" or Iced Earth's "The Trooper" or the Sex Pistols' "Roadrunner" or Tom Jones' (yes I said Tom Jones he's cool dammit!) "Are You Gonna Go My Way"...hey what can I say I collect "weird" covers and usually like them better than the originals. Hell if I got to pick my own funeral musack it'd be "Ring of Fire" but the Social Distortion version.

Up with the "wrong" covers!

I always wanted to cover Devil Went Down to Georgia...metalstyle.

We did cover Ring of Fire too, but I'm not sure if we did it before or after Social Distortion did, I'm sorta thinking before. When we did do covers we did some weird ones, Mozart's 25th Symphony in G Minor sorta shocked people at first. Hehehe.

Oh, sorry, I thought that was understood. My bad Anything/one inhabiting over 7 planes can't interpret sound or light the way we do so having groupies from those sections is a moot point.

NO it’s not, cause I’ve been thinking the same thing. I would love a kaylee-like dress and love the idea of a BD premier and vote Atlanta GA. Our Mistress of Communication-Harems ~A~ lives there. O.K so do I, but that's not the point. Astriana’s VERY influential

Now on the band issue, going for the fanatic fan.

ok, as the prima donna rock star here, i've decided that its time for me to have a torrid and definitely ill-fated affair. i just need to decide with who. feel free to suggest, or volunteer, but keep in mind that this will probably end in a quickie-style marriage in vegas among lots of booze and reckless gambling and then an even more quickie-style divorce. maybe some other quickie stuff in between.

BUMP!

I will not let this band die before it has even started!

as to some comments WAY WAY WAY up there. Covers are great when they aren't exact copies as long as they don't take away from the integrity of the song.

example for a good cover:

Johnny Cash's cover for the Nine Inch Nails song Hurt

example for a bad cover:

Joss Stones cover for the White Stripes Fell in love with a ...boy...cough cough... excuse me GIRL.

If you have to change the gender of the person the song is about, as well as slow it down from like 160 time to 60...then just back away from the music stand and run away as fast as possible.

i would just like to thank howdy for not letting the band die. so reviews weren't rave....we're planning a riot on critics to take a place at an undisclosed time and place. be there!

also, i feel its worth the note, ebo has left us for some sort of 'real world' for the summer. due to the situation, i ask howdy to become my right hand chica for the summer. all those in favor, aye; those opposed, nay.
