They're officially licensed, so the money would go to Universal Studios.
This brings up my next point...I think we should be sending these to Universal, not Fox. I realize that Joss has a new show coming up on Fox, so relations must be going well between them, but he only went to Fox because Eliza Dushku has a binding contract with them... I also think that the cast would be much more likely to do a film rather than a series again. It would allow them to get back on Serenity for a while, and still keep their schedules open for other projects - Summer on Sarah Connor, Jewel on Battlestar, Nathan, Alan, and Morena all have pilots coming up - I just think that some of them may be too busy to commit to an entire series. Universal saved us once, why don't we go to them again?
I want our show back as much as anyone, a film would be great too, hell, I would even settle for some lackluster comic books - so what do you guys think? Am I out voted on the Universal subject, or is this something we should discuss?
I've been away from the site for a few days, and Oh, my dear and fluffy lord! You guys have been busy, busy, busy! Site looks great, and I'll be heading over to register straight away.
As for some of the debated issues, including those in the post I actually quoted, I wholeheartedly support waiting until November. My big worry from the start has been in moving too fast and humping it up. I definitely think individual items should be sent as opposed to bulk. The vast quantity of individual mailins is what shows are numbers, and also I don't think many medical places would take gloves that have been zipping through the mail to TV studio headquarters anyway, unopened or not. Finally, as for the Universal/Fox question, I do think we need to have discussion on the new website and decide. Until now I'd been assuming FOX, just because of the Dollhouse and the fact that they have the TV rights, but I didn't realize how full the cast's schedules were. Looks like there are some factors we need to have a meeting of the minds about. Again, if that means delays, I'm not against that (within reason), as long as we all make sure to speak clearly, loudly, and with a single voice once the decision is made.
Let's keep flying! I'm getter powerful excited about all this.

You make some valid points about the actors schedules. I'm of the mind to contact both Universal and Fox, with specific campaigns for both. I think the actors, networks, movie studios and Joss's schedules will be worked out if enough demand is there for - a movie, series or mini-series. I may be biting off more than I can chew but I'm hopeful the latest numbers in the TV Poll and the Blu-Ray sales will have an impact.
I'm thinking that a mini-series would be the best bet because of what you rightly described about people's schedules. Also I did not know that little tidbit about Eliza Dushku's contract. That explains a lot.
I say bring this up for discussion at the www.savefirefly.org site and see what develops.

I apologize mates. While I am still very interested in participating in this I simply do not have the time I thought I would have to help head it up. What with the new baby and all I am sooo busy.
However, if helpful here is some info.
Many medical and mechanic grade gloves come in blue, however unless you know someone in this field it is almost impossible to buy just one pair. A box typically runs for between $5-15$ and can be purchased through many different medical based websites.
Please keep me informed as to when this is going to go down and I am in.
Also I do have a limited supply of gloves so if anyone needs a pair then get in touch.

Now is the time to start producing our own theatrical productions of Firefly, using the great fanfic scripts.
Then videotape the screenplays for broadcast on cable access, youtube, google video. etc. Star Wars fans have been doing this for years, including homebrew 3D CGI SFX.
If any Browncoats in East TN want to do this, I'll videotape for broadcast on my weekly TV show.
I'm very good at shaky camera FX, out of focus shots, lens flare, as required by the Joss Whedon School of Filmmaking.

Vote Republican.
I've never seen a single Firefly tv episode or movie broadcast under a Democratic administration. Can't say that about any of the other great SciFi shows Stargate, Galactica, Star Trek, etc (which were all bipartisan efforts).
Perhaps someone...maybe Josh the Producer...can ask the tough question. Where do Obama and McCain stand on the Firefly question? Barrack simply does not strike me as the SciFi type. McCain, on the other hand, being a genuine hero of a lost cause and a maverick and all would probably identify with what Serenity stands for.

Hi everyone, first time posting here (hope I don't break any rules... please be merciful with the noob...).
I saw this thread and it struck a chord with me, because for the first time in my career I am actually connected to the capability to do something to help Firefly - and really, the best thing we can do to support the series--to "keep her in the air when she oughtta fall down" as it were-- is to grow the fanbase.
There's a thread on here somewhere that cites that Fox and Universal are at odds with rights to the property, which is essentially true. So obviously there's nothing we can do as far as a large PR media push. As such, my company has taken on the task of getting out word about the Firefly Blu-Ray (which I'm sure you've all heard comes out today) with Social Media instead of traditional media. We are hoping that in order to circumvent the need for passing things through endless legal that the fans themselves will help us create a campaign. And that's how I ended up in this forum.
Though we are officially sanctioned to promote the series by giving away some copies of the Blu-Ray if people join and help out with the campaign ( www.browncoats.com have, for instance), the most useful asset for us are the fans.
If you'd like to write to me about the Blu-Ray campaign I'm helping to run, I'd love to hear from you - especially if you're a well-seasoned fanfic writer. (There's a good reason for that, I swear)

I really love all these ideas flowing out. Awesome.
Recently, a couple of St. Louis Browncoats and I got together and came up with a new kind of "off the radar" guerrilla marketing idea.
All three of us have extensive backgrounds, professionally, in the entertainment business. We wanted to use those skills, knowledge, and contacts in the industry to start a new campaign and have a good time doing it.
We decided to form a band revolving around the show. We named the band "The Browncoats". Instead of directly linking ourselves (by names) to Firefly and Serenity - we decided to create as many references in the music and the "ideas" to the show.
Our first endeavour was to re-create "The Hero of Canton" in a Rock and Roll version, (which was actually what sparked the idea to create the band in such a fashion)
Our goal as of now is to send out the MP3 of our "The Hero of Canton" version and try to make it spread like a virus, referencing our MySpace page. We're also doing things like calling all our fans "Mudders" and planning to name "Mudders Milks of the Month".
We've started with targeting mailing lists of fans of the bands we used to be in, and the St. Louis Browncoats have band helping spread the word for the last week. The response has been pretty good so far.
We plan on continuing this campaign into a music video for "The Hero of Canton" featuring the St. Louis Browncoats, shot in St. Louis. And we'll eventually start playing shows when the following gets big enough - calling each show a "Shindig" of course. We want to attempt to have a local brewery host each "Shindig" and call one of their beers the Mudders Milk of the Night.
So let me know what you guys think and if you would like to help out.
E-mail me at co.pilot@live.com if you want an MP3 copy of the song to send out. And you can see what we've done so far at the site www.myspace.com/thebrowncoatsmusic
Take care all..

Serenity Chinese symbol clock. Getting a vanity plate for my car as well as a vinyl graphic for the top of my car, as well.
The important thing is the dvds, if they keep selling well, the likelier Universal might be interested in doing another movie. I keep buying them and using them as presents. The bottom line is money and the more fans there are, the better chance!

What more can we do?
here is an idea already proposed in the CSTS thread. Let's quit hiding our enthusiasm, let it out there.
An idea suggested is to obtain posters/flyers for the CSTS 2009, and post them in your car windows, and perhaps they will have a sunshade for your windshield with a shiny Serenity image filling it!! Either way, fill in the local screen times and dates of your nearest CSTS, and if not already included, your favortie websites like fff.net.
If these are in windows for a few months before the CSTS screening, and are sitting in parking lots of malls and cinemas where folk might see them, this might spread the word more than hanging things in our cubicles or bedrooms.
Just a thought.

Suspend from ceiling by 4 corners - you can view it when kicking back in recliner or laying on bed. If still too long, can roll up ends on a tube to fit.

I'm new.
I have a question, and then I'm going to go into a long post, in which I will probably talk your ears off to the point that you want to stop reading. Hopefully you can't/won't, but for the person who reads to the end and has some pull: please contact me as soon as possible via PM through this community. Thanks.
What exactly is CSTS?
I came here, because I am a Firefly Fan. I was not fortunate enough to have been watching Firefly while it was a network TV show. I've discussed things before, with different people, regarding why Fox would have canceled such an eye-catching, witty-yet-endearing show with all the right moves and shakes for building a huge, dedicated fan base. It was a poor business decision, and I want to know what other basis they might have used to judge it. Not that it's important, really, but I'd like to know what Fox is really all about. I still can't figure it out.
Firefly is freaking viral, really. The show's been off for how long? And yet still I see the show's stars appearing in different places even today, referenced mostly by their association with Firefly rather than their new work. I love the show, because it grew on me. At first it was cheesy. Then the way in which it took itself seriously started coming forward in my mind. The outstanding CGI, scattered bits of just the right humor, and the way the show "felt" turned the cheesiness to what endeared me to it the most: the way it made me feel like an adventurer.
I remember fantasizing about travelling through space in my own spaceship, in the form of my house. I'd look outside and see stars. I'd see other ships, aliens, truck stops (lol). Anyway, I "live" sci-fi/fantasy in my mind, and I enjoy it quite a bit. Suspension of disbelief is about a trained, dedicated imagination, and I'm that kind of person. I've written one feature-length screenplay to date, and while it's unrelated to Firefly it's still sci-fi and complete. So I've jumped that hurdle and kept my feet.
Why am I telling you all this, as if you're interested? I don't know enough people here, and I want to talk to the "right" people. I think I know how Firefly could continue/restart. I actually have several strategies, and more details come to me all the time. Dedicating myself to a single project is hard, but carrying out a project to its required conclusion, given a team with whom to work, is easy.
Some people here come to discuss their fanhood and what they loved about the show. I want to provide more material to help with that. Others come to see what the general buzz in the community is. I'd like to talk to the second variety. It's nothing personal, really, but I'm trying to get somewhere with this and "make" something.
Thanks in advance.

There is exactly one way that this will happen. First you have to prove to the execs that a new FF/S movie/tv series/whatever will produce at least a guaranteed 10% profit. Otherwise the risk is just too great. Once that is done, then you have to convince them to actually do it.
I say this because countless times people come in with plans that are equivalent to, "If we show them just how good the show is and how much we love it, they'll be sure to do another movie/tv series/whatever." That just isn't the case. The bottom line is money, not how good something is and whatnot. The movie/tv industry is a business. If you don't address it like it is a business, then anything you do will be doomed to fail.
If you're looking for a project, then here's one:
http://s4.invisionfree.com/GunRunner/index.php?act=idx
It's a game mod of the EV Nova engine. Don't worry if you aren't a techie, there's tonnes of stuff that is non-programming/etc related. I don't know what they need done right now. So, if you're interested, drop them a line.
And here's another:
http://www.stillflying.net/
Don't know there current status. But, there's forums seem to be getting posts from time to time.
It's projects like these that are the life blood of a fan community. They prove that the community is still around and active while at the same time serving the community. Because, if the execs aren't going to green light any new content for us in whatever form it might take, we have to do it ourselves. That, btw, also shows that there is an unfulfilled need that they aren't cashing in on, which is a very good thing.

I didn't see this when it was first posted, only caught it today, in fact.
As much as I would love to see Firefly back on the air, I can't see it happening. I'm not being a naysayer here, either, so just hear, uh, read, me out.
Three of the principal characters are currently in new show, and all will likely be renewed for next season, (though I understand that Chuck, with Adam Baldwin is still up in the air,)
I really don't see those three giving up good gigs on the off chance that FOX, who still owns the rights I think, will let the series develop.
To me, without those three reprising their roles, the show wouldn't be the same. The others may well be available, I really don't know what they're doing at present.
And Book and Wash were killed in the BDM.
That being said, if Firefly were to make it back to TV, even with entirely new characters, I would definitely give it a chance.
I think we're more likely to be successful in getting another movie than seeing the series return. Again, I'm not against the idea, just posting my thoughts on it.

IMO, FOX was more concerned with 'BOnes' and with '24' than anything else at the time. Firefly was aired out of order, and seemingly at a different time each week, and on a different day more often than not.
I was surprised that FOX didn't give it more attention, considering Joss Whedon's accomplishments on the small screen up to that point. I don't know why they didn't, but I haven't ruled out mass drug usage, or some sort of mental defect,

On the flip side there always is another movie. Take the Star Trek Franchise they were canceled and then then brought back like ten years later. With movies and a new series. To keep a TV show going might not yield enough profits also. Where as a movie they invest and then a year or two later make the money back plus more. Plus TV shows are on going and movies are more definate.

On one of the Facebook fan pages someone mentioned that they work at a studio where JW was doing some project and he asked about a sequel. JW said something like if someone gave him a few million to finance it he'd be all for it. In an interview (don't know how old it was) Adam Baldwin was asked about it and he said it would have to be soon 'cause he didn't want to be 60 playing Jayne, or something to that effect.....which is a good point, I want Firefly, not geriatric Firefly....no, that's not true (I just wanted to say 'geriatric Firefly' 'cause that's what I thought when he said that, lol). I want something FF as long as it's up to the original standards.
Since so many of the actors ARE working on other shows right now, I doubt a second season would be possible right now. Maybe a sequel or a multiple made for TV movies.

What cha'all talkin bout? FF is alive and well.
No human can possibly keep up with all the fanfic in the Virtual Verse.
What's lacking is a FF RPG videogame, that can be used for fanfic. A soundboard can be used to add actual voices from the original actors, saying whatever the new script requires.
Joss has already optioned such a videogame. Anybody know the current status? Seems to be MIA.

Joss Whedon's Firefly Hitting Video Game Consoles
The Multiverse Network, Inc., a company building the world's leading network of Massively Multiplayer Online Games and 3D virtual worlds, today announced it optioned the rights from Twentieth Century Fox Licensing & Merchandising to develop an MMOG based on Firefly, the science fiction television series created by Joss Whedon that has enjoyed a hugely popular and loyal following since its premier in 2002.
"Fox's Firefly series is set in an incredibly rich and exciting universe. It's going to make a very compelling and unique online experience filled with adventure, humor, and mystery," said Corey Bridges, Multiverse co-founder and Executive Producer. "It's our hope that Firefly's passionate and dedicated community of fans will enjoy the chance to become part of the story as they develop and explore the worlds of Firefly."
Fox Licensing & Merchandising selected Multiverse to lead the evolution of Firefly into an MMOG because of the technical strength and advantages of the Multiverse Platform and the vision both companies share for the future of online entertainment.
"One of the first meetings I had when I joined Fox was with Multiverse," said Adam Kline, Vice President of New Media Enterprises at 20th Century Fox Licensing & Merchandising Division. "We see virtual worlds as an extraordinarily promising new entertainment medium. This is a great opportunity for 20th Century Fox and for the fans of Firefly because Multiverse will deliver an experience that will remain true to the original series, while enabling a whole new level of personal involvement for fans."
Under the terms of the agreement, Multiverse will select and lead an independent production team to develop the project. Fox and Multiverse expect the offering to be available to the public through The Multiverse Network in 2008.
Bill Turpin, co-founder and CEO of The Multiverse Network, Inc., believes that the Firefly MMOG will create significant opportunities for other developers building games and worlds with Multiverse tools and technology.
"In addition to our world-class technology, developers choose Multiverse for our network, which lets them launch their games into a built-in market of consumers who are just one click away from any game on that network," Turpin said. "Firefly will bring in even more consumers, making the network that much more attractive to developers of other worlds."

Multiverse explains the Buffy MMO, Firefly's delay
Yesterday we brought you word that the folks at Multiverse (the developers of the MMO middleware) are in development on an MMO based on Buffy the Vampire slayer. At the same time, news came out the Firefly MMO will now be delayed considerably while they focus their efforts that other IP from writing dynamo Joss Whedon. Yesterday evening we had the chance to speak with Mr. Corey Bridges, Co-founder, Executive Producer and Marketing Director for the company. Mr. Bridges took some time out of his busy schedule at the Virtual Worlds Expo to explain a bit more about the Buffy/Firefly MMO hoopla.
Most interesting, it sounds as though (despite the lack of any announcements about it) there has actually been some forward movement on the Firefly MMO! Mr. Bridges could say almost nothing about it because of contractual obligations with Fox (the owners of the Firefly IP), but what he could say left us with the tantalizing impression we may actually see that Firefly game someday. Okay, I'm definitely in.
I need an address for Universal. I'll bring a crate of blue gloves to DragonCon, and to the other cons I'm doing. And envelopes. I can't promise an address stamp, but if someone else can bring one, that would speed things up. Or we can hand write the lot.
I'll see about some flyers, too.

Hi, I'm new here.
First I have a question, who owns syndication rights to Firefly? I don't remember ever seeing it on Sci-fi, but then again, I don't watch much on that channel (and checking their site, they have a webpage on Firefly, so I assume they must show reruns every now and then).
I think we should try to get the Sci-fi channel to play the reruns more often as it wouldn't cost them too much and it would bring in a whole fandom of viewers. If they got good numbers just from showing reruns, then the chance of them, or another channel picking up the show for another season would be better.
Another thing we could do is a continued letter campaign. I'm not sure how effective that is, but it must be something.
Also, most websites have a feedback button or an e-mail address for fans to contact. I remember when I was trying to "Save Teen Titans" from cancellation, I sent them a few messages on Cartoon Network's website's feedback page.
But the main thing, I think is to just urge friends to watch the series. It's easier to do that now than ever thanks to Hulu, and if we get a high number of viewers on Hulu, then it will also make broadcasting networks give a second glance. I found Firefly thanks to a friend who sent me a link to the show on Hulu, and it became my favorite show. I plan on buying the DVD for both the show and movie sometime soon.
Also, buying the comics would be good.

NBC/Univeral must own the syndication rights, or have "leased" them for awhile because SyFy ( they're rebranding themselves this in July, I may as well get used to it )does show the odd occasional marathon of Firefly. They used to show it more often, I've checked the schedule and it's not on in July.

We've written, thanked, pleaded, sent in suggestions, etc. for SyFy to do something more with Firefly. The window for that opportunity is long gone. You're right though, every time they show it, folks fall in love with it. Just not enough folks to make a difference.

We've tried a bunch of these. Just like signing a petition they don't have much impact. If they ever did, the time for them to is again long past.

This never hurts, although I'm not sure it does much good.

Now this is what you can do! Sharing the
Verse with others ( particularly on Hulu to start with ) is a fabulous idea. Enjoying it and the community is a good idea. Being involved in the CSTS ( www.cantstoptheserenity.com ) screenings and being involved in the charities is good. I am involved with Nathan Fillion's charity Kids Need to Read ( www.kidsneedtoread.org ) and it's very fulfilling.
There's also this site for the coolest stuff to guerrilla market Firefly/Serenity.

Share the 'Verse with others, enjoy the 'Verse with others and one of these days if we're lucky, we'll get more Firefly/Serenity. In some form. Joss is a genius, it'll be good when it happens.

Been really busy selling tons of Joss Whedon comics and related materials in my downtown Toronto comic and game shop for years. I've only just watched Firefly (I hate North American TV) since a friend put on the pilot a few weeks ago while I visited.
I've since roped my manager into watching them with me (we watched Our Mrs. Reynolds last night, which I couldn't wait to get to - it's probably my favorite except for there really being no River in it)
WOW! This is truly the best TV I've ever seen.
I'm behind the curve here in being really flipping upset about the cancellation. Everyone here already knows what I'm finding out years later, so I won't go on about that anymore.
I do know business; it's supply and demand, baby. The demand exists, the supply can be created. Heck, it's screaming to be reincarnated!
Since it seems that the entire crew feels the same way (been reading the Titan companion books) and I see you guys posting here to this day, basically, I can't believe there isn't a bigger ball rolling!
One of my customers just told me that Joss is no longer interested in fighting for his baby. Is this true, or only a partial perspective of the real situation?
It seems to me that a new venture could easily raise the startup investment capital to produce another season, especially if the set and props are still intact and needn't be rebuilt.
I don't know a lot about TV/movies, but I do understand business well enough.
Where could I find more nuts and bolts type info about actual costs for the original season, and the Serenity movie?
I think I've found a new hobby.
There are a lot of similarities between the crew of Serenity and the crew of my shop (ship).
We're definately "browncoats" at heart.
The HairyT is our real life SereniT!
Faith moves mountains. I believe.
Anyone have an idea where the beating heart of the Firefly revival lives these days?
Closest to my heart, River's story needs to be told more fully, for starters. Book telling River that she can't fix faith - "It fixes you"! My God, Joss, how much of this stuff do you know about and how much more could be told!? And that's only one thread of this incredible tapestry that is Firefly.
Gotta stop rambling in so many directions and go sell some more Buffy comics and board games.

Joss has never said that he is not interested, in fact he has made it clear he has many more stories to tell and that Firefly is his favorite creation (so far). He has said that nothing is happening at this time. He does not hold the television or movie rights, those are with FOX and NBC/Universal, and he cannot afford to produce anything on his own. He is just waiting for someone to step up and offer financial backing.
Welcome aboard, Hairy. We need all the crew we can get. Hope you enjoy the place.

So presumably, should a bundle of cash fall from the sky (*ahem*), FOX/NBC would be willing to allow Joss & the crew to pay for the resulting project in exchange for a percentage of the windfall?
Seems to me that money can't be the biggest problem, can it? I'd love to know what the costs were for the whole Firefly season, and the Serenity movie. All I know is that millions are what we're talking, and that shouldn't be such an obstacle considering the sheer magnitude of love for this "property".
Seems to me that logistics is the real stickler, in that all the players need to be available for a set amount of time together to accomplish anything, and from what I (think I) understand, that time would need to be months at least.
I can see a startup selling shares to investors, and also pre-selling some sort of fan package for about $100 or so, which would raise a pile of capital. The package could be a certificate of promise for a limited edition copy of the final product, with bonus material never to be available again elsewhere, say, and maybe also an invite to some giant release party / showing in a stadium or something.
There could easily be several levels of those - like a $250 and a $500 - each one with a little more bling, like some signed material or artefacts from the set that are no longer necessary - or a tour of the set, say?
If this many people love the show as much as I do, it's really a matter of a "get-out-and-push-committee" forming, and pushing.
There is too much love and creativity so evidently on display for this to be really stalling much longer.
I'm no millionaire, but I'm a pretty savvy businessman if I do say so, and I'll bet there's a way because there's plenty of will, right!?
Lots of people have millions of dollars and no clue what to do with them. (For real - we all just gotta find one who won't try and tell Joss how to play everything because it's her money)
Hey - another idea - last one for this post - how about we stage a train robbery...?

I doubt if you'll be able to get truly accurate figures for the production of Firefly, but different reports over the years put the cost of the pilot at $10-12 million and an average of around $2 mil for the other episodes. The Serenity movie cost around $39 mil, but I'm not sure if that is just the filming budget or if it includes the cost of producing the prints and advertising.

Hi people! I'm new to the 'Verse here. I would agree with ECGORDON's comment - Joss Whedon is still interested. I just met him on a few days ago on Saturday, July 4th. He was attending a party (of another writer) which I was photographing. I told him I was a big Firefly/Serenity fan, and would LOVE for it to continue. A big smile spread on his face and he said,"I would love to, but no studio will back it up." I did not ask him any further. I was just thrilled to meet him and needed to get back to my job! =) So based on his simple, short answer, its a matter of money. And as it has been mentioned here, it is fairly expensive to produce. But I optimistically believe that things could still change in the future..

Hi BellaBrook. Welcome to the site.

What a very cool thing that you got to meet Joss. As with many other stories I've heard of him, he's always sweet to fans. YAY for Joss!
I agree, things can always change in the future.
If DollHouse is a huge hit for Fox or Cabin in the Woods is a hit at the box office, perhaps studios will be more willing to fund whatever Joss is interested in doing.

Cool, nice to meet you.
You're lucky that you get to do cool things like that! It sounds like a great job.
Anyway, I can't believe that no studio will back another Firefly project. I mean, come on, it already has a dedicated fanbase that continues to grow even today. It doesn't even seem like a risk...

I'm such a a goof! He thought it was funny and said some our dreams can't be fulfilled because they're illegal. Anyhow, FollowMal, I have not yet seen Dollhouse. I think I need to soon..
LooneyLad, thank you. Being a photographer is a fun job.

When Firefly first got cancelled our company partnered with another and they raised capital to finance an animated series. We took straw polls on all the Firefly blogs (this was even before Serenity). The overwhelming responses was live action or nothing.
We are so nostalgic for Firefly that when both Jewel Staite and Gina Torres submitted to be in our animated film we could hardly say no, but if we cast them in our film I feel like it might end the chance for an animated Firefly.
What are your thoughts?
BTW Gina sent some tracks of her jazz singing and she is awesome.

as someone posted in this very long thread not many people go on websites like this etc but love the shows, what we need is an add campaign of sort if we could you know spam people on all the social networking sites with the info about blue gloves to fox and/or universal we can recruit more ppl making us more mighty and more numbers means more chances. the things about the little papers left at premieres or just places where lots of ppl go is a good idea i would also suggest that we also email fox and universal all on the same day as it will reinforce it plus ppl who are lazy might be more committed to that and we need all the numbers we can get. the anniversary date is a good idea but if we can't accumulate the numbers its not worth doing it then this needs to be organised to be able to work so posting on any firefly or serenity related website would be a good idea. so sorry if i have repeated info. i think its the cost which is dwarfing ppl about acquiring the show to make more which is a shame as it deserves it.
just like to say that i'm a fan in england is there any one else out there on addicted to firefly there are about 66,000+ ppl using this app but they seem to get caught up in spelling mistakes very long thread on this instead of what they could be doing if they actually care about a revival.

The gloves campaign was a dismal failure; next to no-one participated. Similarly, if you look at there site (saveserenity.org) and see how many people have voted to participate in the next campaign (whatever that might be), they are poised for a repeat.
It has just been too long, the community is too inactive and these campaigns are just too ineffective to begin with for that sort of stuff to work. New tactics are necessary and they all involve the long game and an active community. Both being things that people don't want to do.
Sorry.

I don't know what anyone can do to get another serenity movie made except maybe to throw a boat load of money at it. A possible loop hole fans could use is to somehow exploit the making of "Browncoat Redemption." We could try to get another fan made movie made and sent out to silver screens with a promise of all profits going to a worthy charity, or have the movie sent directly to DVD. I don't know about any of that with the cost of making a movie being prohibitive, but maybe if we could get the movie "Browncoat Redemption" made into a DVD where fans could buy it from Amazon then the numbers generated could raise the eyebrows of movie makers. There may be legal loopholes in place to prevent any fans from doing these things though.

Believe it or not I think it is far more likely to get another TV series or Mini-series than a movie. It is just economics. The last movie cost $35 million. The TV series was about $2 million per episode. As a fan which would you rather pay money for? 1 Movie or 17 shiny new episodes?
I think with the continuing success of Dr. Horrible it opens the door to Joss being his own boss on what he wants to work on, BUT he might not want to revisit the 'Verse at this point. Most artists don't want to go back. They like to go forward.

It's not just economics. It's far more social at this point. Sure, one /could/ order 8-12 eps to "test the waters" which would be much cheaper than a movie. *However*, Fox is the one that owns the IP and is not willing to do anything with it. Moreover, if we consider the fact that Fox is producing another Space Western, it doesn't make any economic sense to restart Firefly. Why would they do that? It'd just be competition for a new show that they are developing.
So, in short, it doesn't make economic sense to create two competing shows, historically Fox has never displayed interest in restarting the show and with the new Space Western, I think we have our answer as to there intentions regarding Firefly.
Also, I should point out that Joss has on several occasions explicitly stated that he *does* want to do more Firefly. He's just waiting for Fox or Universal to green-light something else. In other words, he does want to, he's just not willing to fight for it. That being career suicide and all.

I suggested to do something like that a couple years ago. I didn't have the equipment necessary to do it, and no-one wanted to pick it up. The idea died for lack of interest/motivation.
When it comes to today, there are *far* less people around, and *far* less interested/motivated than then. So, I really don't think that there's a chance of people doing something like that. Not to mention that one /does/ need something to advertise, etc. Something new.
There's Browncoat: Redemption. But, that's it. Everything else is fan made vaporware. And therein lies the problem, eh.

Alright, I really need everyone here to pay close attention. My name is Soren, and I am (obviously) a Browncoat. Awhile back, in 2008 on the forum of Fireflyfans.net (a good Browncoat site, by the way), there was an idea. A briliant, briliant idea. Of course, it never came to fruition. I would very much like to get it ...up and running.
The idea is that on the anniversary of the show's airing, September 20th (2010), we will all send in pairs of blue gloves to Fox. In addition, a card with "Can't stop the signal." will be sent with the gloves. Addresses, etc. are yet to come. ANYONE who wants to help me, shoot me an email at uhmspodcast@gmail.com.
This is not a joke, but we need everyone. To quote a poster on the forum, "We need
to get EVERYONE - not just the forum surfers, or the facebook people, but EVERYONE. e-mails, letters, postcards, hell, I like the carrier pigeon idea."
I'm tired of us not doing anything- it's time that ends. I've contacted the owners of Can't Stop the Serenity and this site, as well as The Signal podcast.

That idea did actually happen. It failed because essentially no-one participated. (EDIT: Here's there site: saveserenity.org)
If you want to do something, great. But, at this point, it's quite naive (to say the least) to expect others to follow you. Try to find something that you can do solo, or others are already doing. The former obviously being the better of the two options.

Alright, I had no intention of offending anyone. You are, in fact, absolutely correct. Our goal is parallel to the achievements of everyone who got Serenity off the ground. I had not seen that site, as well, but as you said, it was not as successful as you would have liked.
I am modifying the site. Now, on to the next prerogative. I have already contacted Can't Stop the Serenity coordinator, Anne Barringer, and she is very optimistic about it all.
Again, apologies. Returning to the site, you will see an addendum I added:
"I was notified by another forum poster that the site saveserenity.org is up and this was attempted. In addition, I believe some people were offended by the comment that this is the first time we have rallied. Obviously, it is not- the originial Serenity film was a direct product of the effort of a huge fan movement. Apologies.
But regardless, in spite of the existence of the other site (we would love to get their support, too), we have already received word from Can't Stop the Serenity coordinator, Anne Barringer. In the next few days, we will see if they can jump on board with this and get the signal out, but she is very optimistic."

I am a newbie to Firefly. I recently watched Serenity again, it aired over the holidays (Dec 2009) I throughly enjoyed it....I'd seen it once before on DVD...I had never seen the Firefly series till this week,, I rented the DVD set and am currently on disc 3...I love it!!! I remember seeing one episode when it was originally aired, it left a good impression on me, but then it just disappeared... I am getting alot of enjoyment from Firefly, it is great..Fox did a great injustice pulling it so prematurely. I'm sorry, Browncoats, for being such a latecomer. You oldtimers here, If you can re-imagine your initial pleasure with the show, I am currently experiencing that this week. I don't know what can be done, I am a big fan of Sarah Connor/Terminator from its beginnings, it met a similar fate, but at least it had 2 seasons.

I've talked to a couple people in the movie promotions industry, and this is what I've picked up as the best way to support a film that's already out:
1. But the DVDs from Stores NEW aned not used, as new DVD's get recorded at the studios offices, used don't. As long as enough copies are bought a year to convince stores to but more, the show lives on.
2. Get people to watch the show, even if you're not sure they'll like it. The more people we have, the better. Any other forums you seen on line that have topics with people asking about what movies they should watch, reccomend Serenity. ANYTHING you can do to get more fans.
3. Participate in screenings of the movie. Events like "can't stop the Serenity" are awesome, because they tend to attract media.
4. Support the creator, A.K.A. Joss, in whatever it is he's doing next, just to show the studios we refuse to lie down and fade away.
5. Wear somthing, a pin, a hat, a shirt, anything, that might get people to ask you why you're wearing it. When they ask, 'splain away, and don't forget to tell them where they can find the show. This is called a "T-Shirt" campaign, and works well with things that aren't in the popular subconcious.
If you're approaching a non-geek who you think would like serenity, try framing it as the "anti-trek/wars", explaining how it's different, and more "real" then "other" franchises. If you're approachig a die-hard trekkie/jedi, there's two good ways to approach it:
1: Explain that it's "Star ****" as it was meant to be, with out studio limitations
2: tell 'em to watch it just for the special effects. That's what got me in on it.
And the worst thing you can do is in-action. NEVER pass up a chance to get someone new hooked on the movie, no matter what mood you're in. Failiure to act kills a show just as surely as when the studios ar aiming for it.

Why isn't this show on SyFy? It's light years beyond any of their current line up.

Couple answers:
1) Firefly is not even remotely mainstream. It's story and character based and there are story arches that are there for the long haul. Shows like that get killed today and its been like that for some time.
2) Sci-Fi didn't pick it up when it was cancelled because they didn't have the money; it was tied up in other shows (I believe Andromeda was one of them).
3) It won't be resurrected (mainly) because there isn't a guaranteed return on investment, an extremely high up front cost (sets, etc) not to mention the actors being involved in other projects.
4) The show has been on regularly on Sci-Fi (and Space, and ...) in re-runs. Same with the movie.
5) There is no way to help that will get the show back (see (3)). If you want to help out the community, create some content. I've posted ideas around this site on many occasions. So, the archive is your friend if you're willing to do something. Here's a search:

I wouldn't say no way for it to reboot. Maybe no way with the original cast and all the original writers. The following question would be - Will it be good?
Let's say it will be.
I believe in this day and age with the large and dedicated following Firefly has, it could be resurrected and be very viable financially. Some of the cutting edge film people have employed swarm/crowd funding, pre-sales of DVD before the product is made, merchandise funding, etc. Unfortunately Hollywood lives in the dark ages when it comes to this stuff.
How many Browncoats would buy a $40 t-shirt that said 'Firefly: Crew Season 2 Episode 1' ?
How many would pre-order a special edition DVD for $100 before the episode is even shot?
How many would give $150 to be listed on the credits of the episode?
How many would give $300 to be an extra on the set?
Would a few pay $1000 to get in a gun fight side by side with Mal?
Would a pretty little lady pay $2000 to beat Jayne in a bar fight?
These are similar to some of the techniques that indie filmmakers are using.
Only 20,000 dedicated fans are needed to make it work. Unfortunately, as I wrote above, the execs are still reading by incandescent lights.

YES!!!
Excellent points...I would give blood, sell my car, sell a kidney; whatever it took to see a Serenity prequel or new episodes.
Some creative, brilliant person will think of a way to open the door...and to convince Joss that reviving FF would be a service to humanity, in the name of intelligent television programming.

Never say never when it comes to Hollywood. It seems like eventually nearly everything gets resurrected.
Firefly has several factors that realistically support the hope that it can return in some form in the future. Probably not as a full time series (unless it's remade with a different cast), but a mini-series or online production (that era is coming!) is something to shoot for.
The Firefly DVDs keep selling amazingly well, and the licensed merchandise also sells well. The cast has gone on to successful shows and are becoming more well-known and bankable. With the cast being better known, this greatly increases the chances of a studio investing in a new production. Also, just because several of the cast may be on shows, that doesn't mean they can't be in other productions in their down time. Many famous series actors do movies in addition to their shows.
A big factor is also that the cast really would LOVE to work together again, and Joss genuinely loves Firefly too. When there is that kind of loyalty behind the production, that's a positive force. Honestly, I think Joss is just waiting for 2012 when 20th Century Fox no longer has the rights on Firefly, then Joss will be much freer to do his own thing. After the success of Dr. Horrible, Joss is someone who will be setting up his own studio and arranging his own distribution in the future. It will take a little time, but Firefly will return, someway, somehow...
Just watch.

No other series has instilled such a sense of joy and delight...(a few have come close), tweaked societal norms so thoroughly, while re-telling the classic story of the "bad" guy with the good heart.

Some of those tips are just wrong. To promote it by saying it's NOT Trek or Star Wars is going to accomplish the opposite of what you want . Believe it or not but most folks starting to watch are exactly that: Trekkies or SW fans .You won't get people to buy the DVD's if they aren't even slightly interested in SF series .
I hadn't even heard about Firefly/Serenity until I came across a desktop-wallpaper for Serenity ( in itself an indication of what kind of promotion DOES work ) and becoming curious about the movie. I bought it and thought it was so good I subsequently bought the DVD-box of the series. That's how it works ,not by being "anti-anything " .
So in essence getting folks knowing it exists is the way to go ( vast majority has never even heard of Firefly/Serenity) .Make fan-art and post it all across the web ( Deviantart, wincustomize ,desktopnexus) ,post in sci-fi/fantasy forums , in short: spread the word. I believe the original actions taken to get them to make Serenity were also based on that principle .
What might also work is to make producers aware there's still a fanbase out there ( email Spielberg,Cameron etc. ) .

I beleive it's time for a return of Firefly, maybe not in exactly the same format, but a return nonetheless.
As we know, Fox isn't interested in the franchise, and the general concensus is that the only way it's comming back is either in the form of a follow-up movie to Serenity (most likely directly to DVD), or as a new launch of the TV series under a new name (similar to The Practise being relaunched as Boston Legal), and the network most likely to take on this would be SyFy -it may be that it's brought back in a test run as a mini-series first, before we got a full season (similar to V, BSG, etc), if that were to be the case.
Now there is a few problems in the way, one of the biggest being current projects the actors are involved with (the soonest we could probably see anything come out would be in 2012-2014, more than a decade after the oringinal show), however as it currently stands, most of the cast seem some-what free, and it would be possible to aim for atleast a mini-series first (which would conflict less with cast's current obligations).
So, in whose court is it to get the ball moving? Well, the most pivotal person is Joss Whedon himself, which goes without saying, and secondly it's the excutives of the Network (SyFy in the case), whom have all the power -which people more than often forget, it's not the excutives/company at this point which need convincing, it's Joss Whedon himself, if we could inspire him first, and give him the boost he needs, Firefly, in whatever form it could be in, stands a chance. Secondarily, the excutives at SyFy need to be convinced Firefly is worth (another) shot (and it's likely they have a good deal of respect for it already anyway).
What I'm proposing is thus:
1) Get Joss Whedon motivated, not just the usual standard 'we love your work, we think it's great, we'd like firefly back', we need to inspire him, projects like Browncoats: Redemption are great examples of this, but we need to do something specifically for the inspiration of Joss to bring back the show, or to atleast make him attempt to bring it back by writing a script for a mini-series, and/or getting some sort of presentation for the network -not a full on commitment, but a start. Examples of inspiring him would be fan art, and various 'support' already outlined in the thread, such as bluegloves with 'can't stop the signal' on them, sent to him, or letters to him en masse about bringing it back.
2) Get the network interested in a a Firefly re-launch, TV-Movie, Mini-Series or something similar, opening up a door for Joss to do what needs to be done. On it's own, a network being interested in Firefly is okay, but it's nothing if Joss isn't interested in making more Firefly -we need to stoke that fire in his heart once more, and make it a roaring flame.
3) The next important thing would be to get the actors all interested again, which alot of them still are, or would love to come back -all the actors loved working on the show, and loved working with Joss, so compared with 1) and 2) this is the easier step, and it also depends on the previous steps, given Joss and the Network need to be interested first (though it doesn't hurt to have the actors to be saying to Joss they would like to work on the show again, which would help to convince him).
4) Step four would be entail the community support of the franchise to go into overdrive, if the Network were to put out feelers (such as a poll on their site asking which SfFy shows are their favourites, and Firefly was listed, etc) it would need to be jumped on immediatly, and ofcourse what we do best would need to be done, purchasing DVDs, Blueray, comics, and so on, which would help to show the network, and sponsers it's still something to invest in, and secondly to Joss and the actors they are still loved.

FOX Network is no longer in the picture, but 20th Century Fox which produced Firefly still holds the rights until 2012. They are granting licenses for new official merchandise, and they wouldn't be doing so unless there was money to be made. So in that sense, Firefly has interest for them.

Joss does not need convincing. He has stated time and time again in interviews how much he loved Firefly and how many stories are still to be told. He knows the browncoats are still loyal and want more Firefly. Heck, even interviewers continue to ask about a revival of the 'Verse. But the situation is not solely under his power.
Joss is of course a pivotal person, but if he doesn't control all the rights along with all kinds of money to produce more of the 'Verse, then he's not in a position to move forward.
The executives of SyFy are not exactly the other main players here. The SyFy network is part of Universal, but this is an associated entity. Universal Studios was directly involved with producing the movie Serenity. The 3 picture contract with Universal has already expired, any continuing rights seem to be connected to the merchandise licenses and DVD type releases. So it appears the production side of the contract has expired, but other rights are still in effect. An entirely new contract would most likely need to be drawn to address a new movie/mini-series production... and that would have to then be negotiated with 20th Century Fox too because they still have the rights to Firefly (as this is what happened in order for Universal to produce Serenity). By then the possible financial returns would be too divided to make it worth their while.

Again, Joss cannot "bring back the show" because he does not own the rights. Any show bringing back would involve negotiations with both 20th Century Fox and Universal Studios, and kinds of money... money enough to make two major studios happy, and still have enough funds for everything involved in producing the new movie/mini-series, whatever, pay everybody and make a profit. It's just too messy right now... but the situation could change once contracts expire and the rights start reverting back to Joss.
Fan produced projects are a great way to keep the fandom active and alive. Most of the projects are enjoyed by people who already are familiar with the 'Verse. Some of them might cause new people to want to find out about the 'Verse, but for the most part, fan art and other projects are best appreciated when someone is already familiar with the movie/show from which it is inspired... a point of reference is needed to understand it.
The cast of Firefly have said time and time again that if the show/movie could be revived somehow, they would LOVE to

We get lots of new posters who make an ambitious little speech but never do anything. I think most of them want to see an outpouring of support and lead an army of browncoats in a campaign.
It's just not going to happen. If Joss or one of the BDH's give us a reason to rally then it might happen. If it's just some random fan there's no way to distinguish those who will follow through from those who will disappear.

at this point, eight years later, the only think that will count is money. if the dvd sales and online downloads and whatnot continue to be awesome, and when avengers ( directed by joss, right?) come out and if that is a big hit, which it probably will be, then there is a shot. but im betting that avengers is what everyone is waiting for before they will be in serious talks. so we have another couple of years to hold. but we've done it before.

It seems very unlikely at this point. Maybe when it is old enough to be 'redone' like BSG, Star Trek TOS to TNG, that kind of thing, but I'm sure you've all seen Joss's interview:
In the new SFX Worlds Of Whedon special, Joss Whedon reveals why it’s painful to even contemplate the idea of making a Serenity 2:
While it wasn’t a box office barn burner, Serenity is now something of a hit on DVD and Blu-ray, which makes the possibility of a sequel seem more likely. Alas, Whedon only shakes his head at the prospect: “As far as Firefly is concerned, that will always be unfinished business. Serenity was a Band-Aid on a sucking flesh wound. I think every day about the scenes that I’ll never get to shoot and how badass they were. It’s nice to know that people still care about Firefly but it’s actual grief that I feel. It’s not something you get over, it’s just something you learn to live with.”
I do hope you join our journey in 'strange frame' as we now have excellent talent including folks from the Whedonverse like Drusilla/Juliet Landau.
You never know. 'strange frame' might put us in a position to do an animated Firefly series. I'm friends with Jose Molina via one of my classmates and old friends who is the Producer on Castle, so I know we can find some room in Nathan's schedule.

Just wondering the interest in another grassroots type of effort akin to the Blue glove Assault, only this one taking place on Jayne Cobb Day (16JAN).
In essence it has the same effect but with a slightly different medium: orange yarn
The idea would be to send 14 inches (for the 14 episodes of the series) of orange yarn (Jaynes hat) in with a card promoting, in your own words/quotes, the series. Mail date (to ensure a unified approach) occuring ON January 16th and going to Universal (any other place idea?)
hope to have your support and inclusion! Any questions?
There's no place I can be since I found Serenity

Hi, guys. New here but been a fan since '06. I've bought numerous copies of firefly dvd and Serenity dvd plus the blu ray versions of both and all the comics/trade paperbacks.
I've seen comments on this thread that state that in order to convince the suits to re-light Firefly, we need to "show them the money" which is true. But, in order to do that, we need to win over fresh recruit browncoats in much larger numbers. Increase awareness as to the greatness of this show so that the number of paying customers increases exponentially.
So the question is, of course, how. How do we give people a taste for free? At first, I bought 3 extra sets and gave them away. Well, that's great but I only won over 3 people.
About 2 weeks ago, it hit me.
The Library!
Did you know you can borrow movies at your local library? For FREE?
Give away sets to your local library. So far, I've bought through Amazon, Ebay and other sites 4 dvd sets of Firefly 3 dvds of Serenity and a blu ray set of each plus 1 each of the Serenity graphic novel/trade paperbacks available.
Donate sets to the library. Or better yet, donate only half the season of firefly and let the newbies buy their own. Then we get fresh Browncoats spending $ at a whole new level.
Spread the word. Try it out.
Keep flying.

Yes, giving sets to a library was a great idea when I gave one to our old library in 2006, and by all means please do so if yours doesn't have one...It's an old idea, but a good'un...
I was thinkin' a little more moderno -it'd be great to have all the show scripts or movie script available on Kindle, iff'n they aren't already???? I'm not getting mine 'till next month, sooo I dunno...
Anybody have a Kindle or have it downloaded on ur PC?

It might seem a little "low-tech" or outdated but with the economy the way it is, people are looking for cheap entertainment.(I know I am) But let's think about that set you donated. The local library lets one borrow DVDs for two weeks at a time.
So let's just assumed, for the sake of convenience, that one doesn't re-borrow the set and this set gets checked out again the same day it was returned. 26. At most that's twenty six new converts to the browncoat cause in a years time.
I'm talking about donating multiple sets; enough that even though there are copies checked out, there's always one there for the hungry viewer.(Especially blu-ray as there are less available for borrowing and they kinda stand out. Plus, blu ray is just awesome!)
Now, reading the scripts is just fine and I'd love to have a look-see on Kindle my own self, but, as any good film-maker will tell you, and in the case of Firefly as well, show; dont tell. And this show really must be seen to be enjoyed and appreciated, as I'm sure you'll agree.
You know, I've been looking at that poll on the left-hand side of the screen ever since I came across this site. How much am I willing to donate, annually, to get Firefly up and running again? That poll was my inspiration and if I come across as pushy or that this idea is the be-all end-all to get Firefly back on, well, that's not my intent.
I just have a deep love for this series and wish more people did, too. If the show is ever to be re-ignited, we have to put our money where our mouths are and show the suits what a money maker this show is.
Doesn't matter how many blue gloves we sent to the network, the issue is money. Does it make money?
So, my question is this: How much ARE we willing to spend, annually, to get her back in the air?
