And by the way, I don't see how taking your daughter to a baseball game equates to parading her around for political reasons - talking Willow here, not Bristol. Obama shows off his kids from time to time. Does that make THEM fair game? No! See? I'm defending both sides there.

And speaking of Bristol. Yes, I admitted I thought the joke was funny when I thought Bristol was at the game for the same reasons Kwicko mentioned and I admitted that at the very beginning of the thread, fer cryin' out loud. But when it turns out the daughter was the 14 year old at the game, NOT Bristol, the context of the joke changes entirely. I don't understand why you guys don't see that, but I'm not going to harp on about it either. Bottom line is that Letterman felt he needed to apologize again. Whether that's due to pressure from the Right or what (which I highly doubt - heck even his mom said she was siding with Palin) is beside the point. The explanation he gave during the second apology is what I'm going by. Have you heard or, better yet, seen either apology?

Seems they ALL secretly wanted to get knocked up by A Rod, and this incident just brought their long-suppressed desires to the surface. Double-headers are the real plums for them, as it gives them two 7th inning stretches a day to get a shot at the A Sperm. It's all good, except for condom companies. They're taking such a huge hit from the loss of A Rod's business, they are now going to ask Obama for a handout, or a hand something.

I think the thread about Mrs. O was started specifically because of this thread. A joke was made by someone on the right about someone on the left and the left wanted the same "outrage" as was shown by this joke. I have quite specifically stated that BOTH jokes were in bad taste.

I think it boils down to what has been said several times and people want to ignore. It boils down to context. Letterman himself admitted that he thought Bristol was the one at the game and he made sure she was of legal age before telling the joke. So, put in context, if Bristol was at the game . . . yeah, kinda funny. But, the context changed when it was the younger daughter. A-Rod having sex with an underage girl, consenting or not, is legally statutory rape (that's where the "rape joke" comes into play). Now, just because Bristol got "knocked-up" when underage, does not (or at least shouldn't) make a joke about Palin's other daughter having sex and getting knocked-up at the ball game funny. Letterman realized this and thus his second apology. People realized that if it were about they're underage daughter (as Letterman himself said he realized), it would make them upset, so they empathized with Palin and understood her anger.

I think both Chris and Kwicko mentioned at the beginning of the thread that the joke, when directed toward a 14 year old was in bad taste. Maybe not those exact words, but similar. They were, however, getting a kick at how mad it was making other people and they were just stirring the pot. Then others fell for it and it just degenerated from there. That's how I saw it anyway.

I just don't know what it FEELS LIKE to have it happen, because it never happened to me. I can recognize when a crime's being committed, even though I'm not the one committing it. That I can feel for a person doesn't mean I can know HOW THAT PERSON FEELS. You asked me to put myself in Palin's shoes, and I just never can, period. I don't have children, I don't have young daughters - knocked up or not - and I'm not a woman, so I *CAN'T* know how she feels. I'm conflicted. I don't mind the IDEA of people paying for sex, and think prostitution might be better off if it were legal - except for the organized-crime aspects of it. I think there are people who'd do good to avail themselves of sex-workers (that guy who shot up the gym in Pennsylvania comes to mind) because they can't seem to get laid any other way. On the other hand, I'm prude enough that I couldn't pay for sex. So yeah, if you can find a way to have prostitutes where they have the power of self-determination (individual rights?), then go for it. But how do you insure that they aren't victimized by pimps, whether legal or not?

Is it clear whether he hired these women just to have sex with them? Or is it that he had sex with someone who worked for him?

More to the point, should EVERYONE lose their job if they sleep with someone they work with, they work for, or who works for them?

And if so, tell me again, why is John Ensign still a U.S. Senator? And why is he being allowed to run for reelection?

And there are SOOOOO many other great questions about Ensign, having to do with both legal AND ethical issues.

Way, waaay too late to comment on it all, so I'll just comment on the title and as far as I read.

I agree with others, Letterman is a comedian, he screwed up, and no, I don't believe for a minute that he meant the 14 year old. That's just plain stupid. He'd KNOW the backlash he'd get; it was just dumb not to clarify the joke, which could have been done easiy with something like "good thing he didn't have Bristol with her, or..." They screwed the pooch on that one.

Palin made the most of it, as she has done with ANYTHING that would gain her sympathy or she thinks would.

I never watched Letterman much...I don't watch either of the late-night shows 'cuz I'm really sick of bad jokes being laughed at. Before I gave up, I spent a long time listening to their jokes, thinking "uh..?" while listening to the audience go crazy over something I thought was stupid or just plain not funny.

I don't watch stand-up comedians anymore, either, because the idea of their "humor" seems to be hollering, obscenity, bathroom jokes, or other just plain nasty "humor" which, again, the audience goes wild over but I find not the slightest bit humorous.

Which is not to say either Letterman or stand-ups don't come up with some really great stuff now and again...just not enough to sit through the rest of the bullshit. I always found Letterman particularly nasty in his humor and don't like the bit of the man himself which sneaks through.

But Palin? She's a joke, and I've not seen such a whiner in a long time, not to mention a quitter for self-serving purposes. She'll make her fortune dissing America, Obama, Democrats, the media, and anything else she can wrap her pathetic little brain around, happily lying through her teeth when it serves her purpose.

As to "abusing" her daughters, she used her kids every chance she got; "as ye sow, so shall ye reap". Has nobody but herself to blame. Obama's kept his kids out of the spotlight the majority of the time, yet "Kill Obama, and Michelle and the two kids too" wasn't even intended as a joke!

It's all a tempest in a teapot, as is Letterman's recent scandal. Waste of time, energy and thought.
